Artist Andrea Artemis Morin creates Beautiful, Bold, Wearable Art

By Sally Deering Sounds of hammering fill the air outside Andrea Artemis Morin’s Jersey City Studio where she stands at a tool-filled table manipulating a piece of copper into a bracelet. A painter as well as a jewelry designer, Morin enjoys working in both mediums, and her work can be seen locally at The Raven Gallery & Boutique in Jersey City, and other venues.

In her studio, Morin creates bracelets, earrings, necklaces—all things jewelry. There’s even a chain mail yoke/neckpiece she made link-by-link back in school, a bold first attempt

Morin works in copper, silver and other materials and she creates two types of jewelry she describes as primitive, like her copper bracelets, cuffs and

Growing up in East Providence, Rhode Island, Morin remembers taking her coloring book and crayons and accompanying her mom to her art class at the local college. When Morin was old enough to attend school, art class was

“It was a happy place for me,” Morin says, “and the first place I experimented with art using metal.”

From Providence, Morin moved to New York City in 1997 and attended Fordham University where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts in 2001. It was around that time, she discovered Jersey City.

“I realized there was a place close to New York with reasonable rents and a cool arts community,” Morin says.

Women of Achievement to be honored by Hudson County Executive

By Sally Deering Women’s courage, strength and community spirit will be honored on Wed, March 25 when Hudson County Executive Thomas A. DeGise presides over a ceremony celebrating their achievements to be held at the Ted Conrad Rotunda at the Justice William Brennan Court House in Jersey City.

WEAVING THE STORIES OF WOMEN’S LIVES is the 2015 theme for the 35th anniversary of the National Women’s History Project and Hudson County’s tribute on Wed, March 25 at 6 pm will pay tribute to Hudson women making a difference in their communities and the world-at-large.

“We will be honoring women from Hudson County in a variety of categories, whose courage, strength and spirit in their respective fields and endeavors are special,”

Cultural Affairs’ Program Development Specialist Meredith Lippman says.

Lippman, along with William La Rosa, Administrator for the Hudson County Cultural & Heritage Affairs/Tourism department and the rest of the cultural affairs staff curate and sponsor the annual event along with the Hudson County Board of Chosen Freeholders and County Executive DeGise.

Previous National Women’s History Project themes were Celebrating Women of Character, Courage and Commitment in 2014; Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in 2013; and Women’s Art, Women’s Vision in 2008.

“This event is a celebration of the outstanding achievements of women in our community,” County Executive DeGise says.

Cont’d from page 3 Although her plan was to paint and maybe go into art therapy, Morin took her jewelry design more seriously after taking a class at Brooklyn’s 3rd Ward.

That two-week class where she learned the basics was all she needed to help her seriously pursue jewelry design.

Morin offers advice to anyone who sees a piece of jewelry they like, but feels hesitant to purchase it. If you really like it you should buy it on the spot, Morin says. Jewelry is like a touchstone to a place you’ve visited, or an event or special person in your life. Morin remembers a time she was in a museum gift shop in Paris and saw a bracelet she liked, but

didn’t purchase because of her tight budget.

“I regret not buying that bracelet,” Morin says. “Jewelry brings back memories of being in that place. I will go out of my way to find locally-made things when I travel.”

And her personal taste when it comes to jewelry?

“I’m obsessed with Sterling Silver,” Morin says. “I’m a Goth Girl.

I like over-the-top silver jewelry.”

While designing and selling her jewelry designs, Morin manages L.I.T.M., a bar/restaurant/gallery on Newark Avenue in Jersey City, where she has curated the art shows for the past 10 years. A large place with lots of wall space, L.I.T.M. puts on group and solo exhibits.

Hudson Theatre Ensemble celebrates 14th Season in Hoboken ALMOST, MAINE, a Romantic Comedy Opens Soon cont’d from cover in Hoboken. A series of vignettes about love, each with a bewitching twist, the play take place at 9 o’clock on a Friday night in the fictitious town of Almost, Maine, and features Doug Schneider, Victor Andres, Erica Hazel Flory, Laura DiCerto, Jessica Sherr and Steve Yates.

“Every single scene is happening at the same moment and coincides with the Aurora Borealis,” director Laurie Brongo, a Hoboken resident and dance teacher at the Towne School in Manhattan says. “Each scene is about couples falling in and out of love and each has its own magical moment.”

Brongo, who has been working with the Hudson Theatre Ensemble since 2006, says the company chose the piece because the two-character scenes made it easier for the cast and creative team to rehearse since many of them are juggling careers and busy families to take on the commitment.

“Two years ago we did ‘The Great Gatsby’ and then we did ‘Jekyll and Hyde’,” Brongo says, of the two classic pieces that have lots of costumes. “What was I thinking? I was sewing capes at midnight.”

Brongo has a vast experience directing and choreographing shows both locally and in Summer Stock. She makes room in her schedule for the Hudson Ensemble because

theater is her passion.

“I love it,” Brongo says, as the crew begins to set the stage for rehearsals. “It’s not TV. It’s live theater. The actors have to engage with the audience. It’s people connecting. That’s life.”

Brongo raves about the company’s Producer/ Artistic Director Diana London and Director of development Florence Pape.

During the 14 years since London and others founded Hudson Theatre Ensemble, London recognized how Hoboken was undergoing a “Baby Boom” and now the company presents “Silly on Sixth” a series of children’s shows. Coming up in June: “The Elves and the Shoemaker”.

“The kids’ shows pack them in,” London says.

Rehearsal and performance space are a rare commodity in Hoboken where rents are extremely high. Always a forwardthinker when it comes to the arts, back when Hudson Theatre Ensemble was first forming Hudson School principal Suellen Newman invited the troupe to use the school’s performance space, London says.

“There’s no way we could have done this without Suellen Newman,” London says. “Performance space is precious here in Hoboken and someone willing to support us is priceless.”

Laurie Brongo directors a scene with actors Steve Yates and Erica Flory in ALMOST, MAINE by John Cariani Association of Community Theaters (NJACT) for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Play for its production of SCAPINO. The company was nominated in 2008 for Outstanding Lead Actor for its production of THE FOREIGNER, and nominated again in 2014 for Outstanding Lead Actor in AS BEES IN HONEY DROWN. MAINE & HOBOKEN Actor Laura DiCerto keeps coming back to Hudson Theatre Ensemble because of the stage experience and camaraderie.

DiCerto, a Jersey City resident who lived in Hoboken for 10 years is in several ALMOST MAINE vignettes: ”Where it Went”, “This Hurts”, and the Prologue and Epilogue.

“I really like this play,” DiCerto says. “I think it’s very sweet and very real and a lot of people can identify with the characters.

Relationships are hard.

Everyone in each of these scenes has a particular problem with relationships.

Each piece sorts it out.”

DeCerto has performed in several shows throughout the years, many of them in the Silly on Sixth children’s show series.

“I love the interaction with the kids and I get to act like a crazy loon on stage,” DiCerto says, “Of course, not in a way that scares the kids. I’ve played Snow White, the Little Engine That Could, even a pig. There’s always a message or lesson that we hope the kids get.”

DiCerto says performing for kids always comes with surprises. There’s a lot of audience participation and kids will surprise the cast with the things they call out. Sometimes they surprise the cast by getting a little too involved in the show.

“One time, for a play called ‘Little Red & the Hoods’ we brought the children on stage to help us out,” DiCerto says. “There was one secret we were trying to hide till the end, a secret recipe that the wolf wanted to steal. One of the kids just took it out of the basket and handed it to me.

He got so into it, he wanted to solve the problem.”

DiCerto also sings high praises for London and Pape’s skills at running the company. Working in data services at John Wiley in publishing, DiCerto appreciates the cultural outlet London and Pape offer the community.

“I think they do a great job,” DiCerto says.

“There’s a level of respect and kindness that Diana and Florence have for the people in their shows.

There’s a loyalty to the Hoboken community, too.

I lived in Hoboken for ten years and now I live in Jersey City. It’s nice to have a creative outlet where I can go after work.”

“It was one of my faves,” Flory says. “You meet the kids afterwards and I remember one of the kids said, ‘I can’t believe I’m meeting Goldilocks. It was so adorable.”

Flory works at New York University in finance and these days she seems to spend more time behind a desk than on a stage. A member of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), Flory has been performing most of her life.

“It’s my creative outlet, I love connecting with the

audience,” Flory says. “You can share their energy and love, and I love pretending to be someone else. I liked playing dress up when I was kid.”

Jersey City Restaurateur Brian Dowling Keeps his Bars Cozy & the Food Comfy

f you know anything about Jersey City, you know that Grove Street houses the seat of city government – Jersey City Hall – and a plethora of restaurants and bars, a welcome respite for city workers to come for a lunch meeting and local residents to hang their hats after a busy work day.

Brian Dowling, owner of Park & Sixth Restaurant & Drinkery on Grove Street understands the need for a wine and dine oasis in a big, bustling city. The restaurateur has several bistros in Jersey City and one in Manhattan: a cocktail bar at Park & Sixth’s original location now called Dull Boy Bar; the Park & Sixth Gastropub on Washington Street; The Garret bar, a hideaway on Bleecker St. in Greenwich Village (he co-owns); and his new bistro: Park & Sixth Restaurant & Drinkery, formerly The Merchant, across from City Hall.

“The space is beautiful, we just embellished it a bit,” Dowling says,

taking a quick break from catering a party in the back room of his gastropub. “Structurally we didn’t have to do anything. Aesthetically, I added touches.

I made the back room 1920s Prohibition-style.

We brought in old signs, decorations. Behind the bar, we built these beautiful industrial shelving units with reclaimed old bar wood. We want it to look like a dive bar with good food. It was important to keep the integrity of the old restaurant and that reflects in the menu.”

The new menu is a tad sexier than the one at Park & Sixth’s previous location down the street, Dowling says. As Head Chef, he describes his

The dinner menu features Starters, Soup & Salads, Burgers, and Entrees as the main event. Starters include Bone Marrow, Chicken Liver Mousse, Asian Steak Tartare, Squid Ink Risotto, Crispy Braised Pork Belly, Muzz (house mozzarella, tomato, basil), Park & South Wings, the Meatball Parm Skillet (19-ingredient meatballs, homemade Texas sauce and muzz), and Norris Johnson’s Macn-Cheese made with 5 cheeses ($9-$16). For soup, there’s a Split Pea; and salads include the Chop’t, Skirt Steak, and Beet, and the Garbage Salad made with mixed greens, rabe, zucchini, roasted red peppers, Portobello mushrooms, asparagus, red onion and balsamic vinaigrette ($9-$16).

Burgers are given deluxe treatment and the menu features The Beast: ½ lb. ground short rib, American cheese, lettuce, bacon, caramelized onion, Chipotle mayo, ketchup and a runny fried egg; the Powerhouse Prime: ½ lb. ground short rib with lettuce & tomato; The WTF Burger: Chef B’s secret blend; Irish blue cheese, caramelized onion and bacon on a Brioche bun; and the Spicy Tuna Burger: Yellowfin tuna, scallions, soy sauce and Sriracha mayo. ($12-$14).

Entrees feature Pan Seared Salmon, Rosemary Garlic Chicken, 30 Day Dry-Aged NY Strip, Double Cut Bone-In Pork Chop, Short Ribs, Chicken Parm, Orecchiette Bolognese, and Meatloaf ($19-$29).

Raised in Oradell, Dowling originally started out as a Golf pro and then tried restaurant sales which gave him the foundation to start his own restaurant business.

“If a cherry tomato rolls under the table, I know what it costs,” Dowling laughs.

Originally, Dowling opened Park and Sixth in Hoboken, and then bought a deli in Jersey City and turned it into a restaurant.

Dowling knew delis from his years working in one, making sandwiches, fresh mozzarella and entrees.

“I was known for my sandwiches which I carried through to my restaurants,” Dowling says. “My sandwiches are way more extensive. We use really good technique. For our chicken sandwiches we brine the chicken in salted water overnight so the chicken is very tender. The meats are all marinated. We take the sandwich to another level.”

Indeed, the lunch menu features a sandwich section that includes The Grove with ham, Sopressata, shaved parm, homemade muzz,

roasted red peppers, red onion, and lettuce; and the “2 Points to Genius” sandwich with Asian marinated Skirt steak, gorgonzola, mesculin and roasted garlic mayo ($10-$12.50).

Owning two eateries and a cocktail bar in Jersey City keeps Dowling extremely busy these days. He’s been in Jersey City for 12 years and says he remembers when there were only four or five restaurants on Grove Street.

“Jersey City was always the up-and-coming city and now we’re there,” Dowling says.

“I love this city. I love the diversity. I grew up in the suburbs; that wasn’t diverse.

Down here, I love meeting different people, experiencing different cultures and foods. I’ll never leave.”

March 19, 2015, Jersey City, NJ – Hudson County Community College (HCCC) will hold a Spring Open House for potential students on Saturday, April 11, 2015. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the College’s Culinary Conference Center, 161 Newkirk Street in Jersey City, NJ – two blocks from the PATH Journal Square Transportation Center.

The College will waive its application fee for prospective students who attend the Open House.

“There is a common misconception that these Open Houses are exclusively held for those who are about to graduate high school; but that is not the case,” said HCCC President Dr. Glen Gabert. “These events are held for everyone who is thinking about attending college. That includes those who delayed their studies to start their families, those who began college and left, and those who want to reinvent or revitalize their careers and their lives.” He noted that nearly one-third of the College’s students are between the ages of 22 and 29.

Dr. Gabert said that Hudson County Community College is the perfect first step to acquiring a college degree without becoming saddled with debt that often is associated with higher education tuition.
