“The Counterfeit Detective” by Paul R. Paradise in Bookstores Nov 1

By Sally Deering Ever wonder about the watch and sneaker knockoff trade? Trademark counterfeiting takes a billion dollar bite out of U.S. commerce and has grown to huge proportions thanks to the Internet and the global marketplace, according to counterfeiting expert Paul R. Paradise. A lecturer and author on the subject, Paradise explores the dark underbelly of the counterfeit knock-off trade in his first novel, “The Counterfeit Detective,” published

by Kőehler Books and due in bookstores and on Amazon.com Nov. 1st.

“It’s a sweatshop murder that takes place in New York City,” Paradise says while on a lunch break from his work as Hudson County Records Manager.

“In the book, Theo Jones is a P.I. that specializes in Intellectual Property. I modeled him after Andy Warhol. What is Andy Warhol’s most famous painting?

not talking about the cans; he was talking about the trademark.”

Based on what Paradise says the FBI calls, “the business crime of the 21st Century,” in “The Counterfeit Detective,” Private Investigator Jones infiltrates an interstate counterfeit ring and after a series of events, his world unravels like the seams in a pair of knockoff designer jeans.

Here’s an excerpt.

“I know the shock of learning you’re going to die. First, there’s disbelief and denial, followed by anger, and then an eventual acceptance of your fate. I was in the acceptance

phase that morning as I boarded the Brooklynbound subway for a rendezvous with John Hwa, my best informant. I would have looked forward to receiving a tip about the underground market in designer knockoffs—but I was contemplating a premonition my wife, Linda, had last night.

I had arrived at the detective agency filled with dread because her premonition was about death. My death! Coming on the eve of the one-year anniversary of my brother, George’s death was more than

enough to rattle me. After a sleepless night, I thought about cancelling my meeting with Hwa. If I had, I would have saved myself a major headache.”

According to Paradise, “The Counterfeit Detective” is based, in part, on an excerpt of real life Private Investigator David Woods that appeared in PI Magazine and later in Paradise’s book, “Trademark Counterfeiting: Product Piracy, and the Billion Dollar Threat to the U.S. Economy.”

His short story about the subject earned Honorable Mention in the 2008 Writers Digest Fiction Competition.

Paradise grew up in Boston, where he attended Brookline High School. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from Washington State University, and holds a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from Pratt Institute in New York.

Paradise started his writing career penning books on animals for a publisher in Neptune, New Jersey, while he resided in Asbury Park.

In 1979, he moved north to Hoboken and went on to work for a legal publisher and as a paralegal for a patent firm.

“They had a piracy unit,” Paradise says. “Piracy is not a new crime. It dates back to the MiddleAges. Today, piracy has skyrocketed with the advent of the global marketplace, and the Information Age.” A published author and lecturer on trademark counterfeiting, Paradise also blogs regularly about the subject– and a whole lot more – on his website www.paulparadise.com.

Artie Quitter podcast Artie Lange talks Hoboken and post-radio life

A

rtie Lange has been working steadily in film (Dirty Work, Beer League), television (MADtv, The Norm Show) and radio (The Howard Stern Show, DirecTV’s The Artie Lange Show) for two decades. As if that weren’t enough, he remains a theater-level stand-up comic with two New York Times best-sellers to his credit.

In turn, with Eli Manning leaving town, Artie Lange is easily the most famous man in Hoboken.

Not being one to rest on his laurels, Lange flies the Hoboken flag loud and proud with his Artie Quitter podcast. Launched earlier this year and taping four days a week in his Hoboken loft, Lange’s subscription-based podcast delivers the well-informed yet politically-incorrect comedy that long-time followers of the Union Township native know to expect. It is the rare kind of show that has interviews with celebrities (e.g. Colin Quinn, Don Rickles, Gilbert Gottfried, Howie Mandel), yet also roundtable talk with local comic friends (e.g. Geno Bisconte, Mike Bocchetti, Chris Cotton, Stacey Prussman) about everyday life.

Lange, who performed twice during the recent Hoboken Comedy Festival, currently has a third book in the works with Anthony Bozza. While being interviewed, he also expressed

RVO: What was the first podcast you ever heard?

Do you remember?

AL: Probably Marc Maron’s, that’s the first time I ever heard of a podcast. I listened to it and thought it was funny. It’s hard to place it, because it’s so common now.

RVO: Where’d the idea come from that you were going to host a podcast?

AL: I got fired from stuff. I do like being very uncensored. This is the only time I feel that I’m completely uncensored, which can be scary too, because you can say anything you might lose your position in show business nowadays. Three years I had a job at DIRECTV. For three years they basically let me do whatever I wanted to do. But it wasn’t making a lot of money for them, and then they let my contract run out and I left. I was talking to Sirius a little bit, Sirius you can curse,

but you’re still working for a corporation. Then this idea came up and I thought, “Wow that sounds fun.”

So I bought the equipment and just said, “Fuck it, I’ll do this and stand-up until something else comes along.” You know, show business, you’re always waiting for the next thing, but this is a fun life right now because I get to be as funny as I want with people I like coming on, and plug my other stuff, and do stand-up. It’s a good living and it’s a good life, it’s relaxed.

RVO: Are there any surprises you didn’t expect in launching a podcast?

AL: Yeah, the lack of success of it, my god (laughs).

I thought there would be more people into it. People that subscribe are hardcore, [but] people have a very negative view about spending any money. I’m a controversial guy that says a lot of crazy shit, and I don’t get a lot of sponsors, so I do the subscription thing. But now it’s becoming a bigger business. People will subscribe because, I think, people like the show.

RVO: Have you thought about changing the model of it where people don’t pay to pay but there are advertisers?

AL: Yeah, but I’m saying,

I don’t get a lot of advertisers because of what I talk about. But I guess we could do that, right now it’s doing alright, it’s improving.

RVO: A lot of people start podcasts as a “loss leader,” they’re using it to promote their stand-up or sell books if they’re an author.

AL: I guess I like having something to promote my stand-up. It’s not really why I’m doing it. I’m doing it because it’s a great vehicle to just be insanely crazy.

I like being nuts. That’s when I’m at my funniest.

RVO: What I interpret that as is that basically it’s a creative outlet for you.

AL: Yes,that would be the number one reason now, if I had to choose. Definitely a creative outlet.

Hendrickson’s Corner in Bayonne Traditional Dishes with a Side of Ghost

By Sally Deering Stepping inside Hendrickson’s Corner pub and restaurant evokes the feeling of ale houses more than 100 years ago – and it should. The place was built in 1884.

Siblings Bob, Stephanie and Tom O’Neill bought Hendrickson’s in 2014, a decision inspired by Bob O’Neill’s love for the place and its history. The three co-owners made some upgrades to the restaurant’s equipment, and air-conditioning, things like that; and added some new dishes to the menu, but you’ll still feel that Old World vibe when you step through the

door. You’ll also find some traditionally classic dishes on the menu like Sauerbraten with Red Cabbage and Potato Pancakes – a dish hard to find in Hudson these days.

Originally, Hendrickson’s Corner was a post office, a town hall, and a police station.

“There are two jail cells in the basement; two stone structures,” Bob O’Neill says. “We use one as our liquor cabinet and the other as our cold room for the beer system. We’ve re-done the stained glass, added a new air conditioning unit,

When singer Giselle Bellas of Jersey City, who sings vocals with the band Sweet Pro on the hit show LOUIE, needed a director to shoot a video for her

cover of the song FEVER, she reached out to the JCITFF. Maureen Goletz helped Bellas find a director.

“Any time I needed help shooting video Maureen and the film festival have been there for me,” Bellas says. “The film festival connects people. I would have never thought I would be making my own film and directing my first music video. It inspired a new side of me.”

This year, Bellas will be attending the Opening Night Reception as a “Brand Ambassador”.

“Giselle is the perfect example of what the JCITFF is about,” Craig Goletz says.

Along with the film festival this weekend, the JCITFF has five film & TV workshops planned for the coming year.

“We moved here from
