Jersey City Lights the Torch for Golden Door International Film Festival ver since the French presented us the Statue of Liberty, the “Lady in the Harbor” has become an icon for all immigrants making their new home in America. On Oct 13th, Lady Liberty beckons “huddled masses” once again, only this time her torch will light the way for movie-goers down the darkened aisles of Loew’s Jersey City movie palace for the Golden Door International Film Festival in Jersey City.

Over the course of 4 days more than 40 films – feature length and ‘shorts’ – will be screened at the beautifully restored Loew’s Jersey City in Journal Square Other Jersey City venues hosting screenings are Art House Productions at Hamilton Square; Bar Majestic on Grove Street (across from City Hall), Studio III VII I on Warren St., LITM restaurant on Newark Ave., and the

Jersey City Public Library (Five Corners Library) on Summit Ave. Produced by Bill Sorvino (nephew of actor Paul Sorvino, the event promises movie stars, directors, producers and, of course, Jersey City, the chance to shine in the spotlight this side of the Hudson.

The event kicks off Oct. 13 with a gala reception at the Loew’s Jersey City and runs through Sun, Oct. 16th with an awards ceremony, also at the Loew’s, where winners in 18 categories will be announced.

A special Lifetime Achievement Award will be given to award-winning actor Paul Sorvino and documentary filmmaker Leon Gast of Jersey City, whose film “When We Were Kings” about the legendary heavyweight boxing match between Muhammad Ali and George Forman won the 1996 Academy Award for Documentary Feature.

Jersey City Volunteers to plant ‘seeds’ that grow Community Pride

Jersey City’s brick and mortar landscape could use some TLC from Mother Nature, clay pots of yellow daffodils on street corners, picturesque clusters of red tulips blooming in vacant lots; entranceways to city buildings as flowery as a June wedding.

On Sat, Oct 22, the Jersey City Parks Coalition hosts the “Big Dig” where trowel-wielding volunteers will plant 17,000 daffodils and tulips in 80 locations throughout the city. It’s all part of “Make a Difference Day!” a partnership between the Mayor’s Office, the Division of Parks Forestry; Cultural Affairs and the Jersey City Parks Coalition. The event recalls the “fix a window” turnabout in New York City, years back, where broken windows Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy announces in Chelsea brought change to the neighborhood when local advocates began to repair their broken neighborhoods “Big Dig”Day at a press conference in front of City Hall and plant seeds for community pride.

The mayor’s office is still looking for volunteers to get their hands dirty in an effort to pretty-up Jersey City’s hard-as-conrete image.

Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy held a press conference, recently, announcing the city’s efforts for the “Big Dig” which will be held in dozens of city parks, schools, libraries, cemeteries, select open spaces and gateways to the city. Donations are being raised from individuals and corporations who are committed to the beautification of their hometown and who see this as an investment that will keep on giving year after year.

“For the past few years, my office has been involved in recognizing Make a Difference Day! with events in Jersey City,” said Mayor Healy. “However, this year is different as this is the first time we have had one, overarching event for the entire city. We thank the Jersey City Parks Coalition for this concept of coordinated bulb planting throughout the city and for all of their hard work to get this project off the ground.”

Begun in 1990 as a national day dedicated to helping others, Make a Difference Day! is an annual event sponsored by USA Weekend Magazine on the fourth Saturday of every October. Volunteers can join a group project or come up with their own project, like spending the day at a soup kitchen or helping an elderly neighbor around the house. Those who can’t participate on Saturday for religious reasons can do their community service on Sunday.

This is the first citywide event for the Jersey City Parks Coalition although the Coalition has established Community Gardens in 10 of their 14 member parks groups. Since 2004, spring plantings and fall bulbs have been making a difference in parks such as Pershing Field, Van Vorst Park, Riverview-Fisk Park, Sgt. Anthony Park, Ercel Webb Park, as well as Washington Park and Lincoln Park.

“We really saw this as a way of making a difference in our community by planting bulbs that bloom in the spring, yielding colorful flowers in our parks and at our gateways,” said Charlene Burke, project manager for the Big Dig. “Participating in an event like this is not only a great way to improve your community, but also helps you meet your neighbors that share a common goal.”

In addition to sponsorship from the City of Jersey City, the Big Dig is sponsored by Century 21 Plaza Realty, the Hudson County Improvement Authority, the Jersey City Municipal Utilities Authority, Liberty State Park, PSE&G, United Water, and The Westin Jersey City, as well as other local businesses, organizations, and Jersey City residents.

“Planting bulbs in every ward and at prominent and visible entries will hopefully encourage neighbors to take the next step in the spring of 2012 and develop small community gardens which the City is encouraging through our Adopt-A-Lot program and our 365 Days of Green program,” Mayor Healy said. “We encourage residents to come out and support this event and in the days following to continue to help make Jersey City a greener city.”

They know how to filter out the good from the bad. We are the leader in the industry.”

You’ll get no argument here. I dined at Ibby’s in Jersey City many times, picking up falafel sandwiches on the run or sitting outside at the bistro tables, dining on hummus, stuffed grape leaves and spinach pies. In Hoboken, Ibby’s Falafel is just as great. I tried the hummus and it was spicy and delicious. The spinach pies were light with a tangy seasoning. Everything is homemade on the premises. The meats for the Schawarma are layered chicken and lamb that are marinated, seasoned and sliced right from the spit (think Gyros). Ibby’s gets his meats fresh from a Bayonne butcher and his produce is also local. Ibby also makes homemade desserts.I tried a Kanafe, shredded pistachio, filo dough and honey – and it was yummy, especially with a cup of Turkish coffee.
