JCTC explores ORIGINS with Art, Performance and Discussion Month-Long Multi Media Event features Works by Ramapough Lenape Artists

H

istorically,

the towns and cities of Hudson and the island of Manhattan, have always been a cultural rainbow of people living and working side-by-side whose ancestors hail from all parts of the world. Do their origins affect who they are and how they live today?

Questions like this are the focus of the Jersey City Theater Center’s new monthlong multi-media (“Self Portrait” by Ramapough Lenape artist Jack Crying Raven Anderson of Westwood) event, ORIGINS, a series of art, film, theater and discussion that explores the topic in-depth. Running through Dec. 3rd, ORIGINS examines the topic from several points of view; and Artistic Director Olga Levina hopes the month-long series will inspire visitors to examine their (Cont’d on page 3 )

Rich Dwyer of Bayonne Juggles the Actor’s Life with High Voltage Construction

R

ich Dwyer lives two lives, one as Public Affairs Manager at PSE&G overseeing high voltage construction projects and the other as a character actor taking on all sorts of roles in local theater. By year’s end, Dwyer will have performed in seven plays and musicals including ELF The Musical which opens Dec. 4th at the West Hudson Arts & Theater Company in Kearny.

A passion for acting that grew from a postcollege interest more than 20 years ago, Dwyer has spent the past 10 years taking on roles to develop his craft. Currently, he can be seen on stage as Tom, the dog in the children’s theater production of “Cinderella!

Cinderella!” at the Hudson Ensemble Theater in Hoboken. Portraying Cinderella’s adopted pooch who protects her like a loyal sidekick has been one of the most difficult roles he’s had so far, Dwyer

asked, “Are you here for the audition? I’m casting for ‘A Christmas Carol’ and I think you’d be good as the Ghost of Christmas Present.” That was my first community theater performance. My wife Irene took our son, Eamonn – he was just a kid – and when I came onstage, he called out, “Hey that’s my dad!”

The audience cracked up.

How’s the show going?

Ramapough Chief Anderson Dwaine Perry, a human rights and environmentalist activist, and Lenape artist Jack Crying Raven Anderson. Both artists will show their work and lead a discussion of origins as it relates to the Lenape Nation.

Ramapough Lenape,” Jack Crying Raven says. “Some of my paintings deal with my experience as a native person, as a Lenape person.

I work in oils, pastels and acrylics. One painting I submitted to the show is a self-portrait, and the other is a mixed-media collage and portrait of my daughter. (Pictured) Both of these paintings are spiritual paintings, one was something I saw when I went to a ceremony and one was in a dream I had. I practice Native spirituality; I walk the red road, the red path.”

JERSEY CITY VETERANS DAY PARADE

On Nov. 8 at 10 am, Parade Kicks Off at City Hall Marchers to Gather at Historic Cemetery to Place Flags on Soldiers’ Graves

River View Observer Staff For more than seven years, the all-volunteer mission operating and preserving the Historic Jersey City & Harsimus Cemetery on Newark Avenue (across from Dickinson High School) has presented “Honoring our Heroes” a military and musical tribute to U.S. veterans.

The cemetery is the final resting place for thousands of veterans from wars that took place during the Revolutionary era, the War of 1812, Spanish-American War, Civil War, WWI and WWII, Vietnam, and Desert Storm.

This year, on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 10 am, cemetery

volunteers will partner with Jersey City Mayor Steven M. Fulop’s administration to host the Jersey City Veterans Day Parade which will feature U.S. Veterans, military and public safety personnel, marching bands, ROTC, military vehicles, vintage cars, scouts, drum corps and Revolutionary and Civil War re-enactors, and military dogs The parade will begin at City Hall and march up Newark Avenue to the Historic Jersey City & Harsimus Cemetery where a musical tribute will begin at 11:30 am.

The Program will feature guest speakers and entertainment by Hudson

View Entertainment’s “The Sunshine Girls” and “The Dream Team” including Chimene Petit, Eva Skolar, Aart Markenstein, and a special appearance by MTV Artist LOVARI. The Program also includes a 21 Gun Salute, a Wreath Ceremony and Blessing of the American Flags.

Parade-goers are welcome to participate by placing a flag on a soldier’s grave at the end of the ceremony.

“It’s a beautiful program that includes guest speakers and a full USO type of show right inside the cemetery grounds.” Volunteer/ President Eileen Markenstein says. “For several years now, we talked about how wonderful it would be to bring back the Veterans Day Parade to Jersey City.

Thursday, Nov. 19, JCTC hosts an evening of book readings and signings with Debra Devi, author of Language of the Blues and Joe Monteperto, who wrote The Edge of Whiteness. On Friday, Nov.20, a screening of Young Lakota, an award-

winning documentary about 20-somethings on the Pine Ridge reservation, followed by a Talk-Back with the filmmakers, Marion Lipschutz and Rose Rosenblatt.

“We all came from different origins and know bits and pieces of American history, but how do we put these bits and pieces together,” JCTC Artistic Director Olga Lavinia says.

“Is it important for our kids to know about their ancestors and where they come from? Or does America create its own history, and is that enough? It’s a very

universal topic because in some countries people feel they have to protect their identity, who they are, their beliefs and morals.”

Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that the traffic flow for the portion of West 53rd Street between Broadway and Avenue C will be reversed in early November 2015.

This change in traffic direction is happening in conjunction with the next phase of the New Jersey Turnpike Interchange 14A Improvement Project. The City Council approved this action at its meeting on October 21.

The show is making its professional world premiere thanks to a generous matching grant from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, administered by the Hudson County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs. To help Speranza raise the $3,000 needed to match the grant, supporters can donate to their Indiegogo campaign and receive show tickets, autographed posters and other great perks.

“Janey Miller’s World Tour” runs from Nov. 5 to 14 (11/5 - 11/14). Shows are

The VIP Diner Fits the Bill Go for the Java; Stay for the Specials

By Sally Deering Some folks consider themselves wine connoisseurs; others can tell you where to find the best pizza; or the tastiest taco in town. If you were raised in New Jersey, however, chances are you know your diners and which one has the best lemon merengue pie; the juiciest cheeseburger deluxe; and chippiest chocolate chip pancakes.

Of course, it always boils down to the java. If the coffee tastes lousy; a diner’s profits can swirl

down the drain faster than a soggy fruit cocktail.

Wed, Nov. 4, 7:30 pm: Former Jersey Journal editor Ron Semple will give a presentation and sign copies of his new book BLACK TOM: Terror on the Hudson (Top-Hat Books, 516 pgs.; $27.95) Semple turns back the calendar to 1916 when German saboteurs destroyed a large railroad munitions depot (Black Tom) on the Jersey City waterfront.

The explosion killed and injured several night watchmen and caused extensive property damage costing millions of dollars. Author Ron Semple is a 5th Generation Jersey Cityite who walked the Jersey City beat for the Hudson Dispatch and Jersey Journal newspapers in the 1950s and 60s.
