HUDSON HAPPENINGS Cynthia Renta appointed to lead Educational Arts Team into next era Renta brings 25 years of experience in youth and social justice programs to mainstay institution for Northern New Jersey youth

The Educational Arts Team, a respected Hudson County-based nonprofit leading the way in artsbased integration programs for young people in the schools and community, has appointed Cynthia Renta as its new executive director. Renta takes over the role from outgoing interim director, Betsy Vorce. Vorce assumed leadership of the organization in June 2021 upon the retirement of Carmine Tabone, the Team’s previous executive director and co-founder.

As Educational Arts Team’s executive director, she will lead planning and execution for all programs and activities – including the popular Camp Liberty summer program – ensuring that all adhere to the organization’s principles of diversity, equity and inclusion. Renta’s mandate includes building relationships with key stakeholders in Hudson County government and community with the objective of furthering programming, funding and advocacy.

“We are thrilled to welcome Cynthia to lead the Educational Arts Team as our new executive director,” said Micheline Grace Lewis, board president.

“As a Hudson County native, she brings not only a great knowledge and love of the Hudson County community, but also a

stellar non-profit background that combines experience in youth development, equity and socialemotional programming and civic engagement. The Board - which continues to expand its trustee roster - is confident that Cynthia will lead the Team into the future while also building on the organization’s legacy of nearly fifty years.”

A native of Jersey City, Renta joins the Team from the Center for Supportive Schools where she has worked for the past six years, most recently as senior community school director. In this role, she directed the community school strategy across five schools in Jersey City.

Prior to that, Renta also directed the Newark YMCA (Jersey City based satellite office), implementing 21st Century Learning Centers’ after-school and summer camp programming that served children and families across Jersey City. She possesses over twentyyears of experience creating, producing and directing community-participatory art programming as an artist, teaching artist and non-profit leader in Jersey City, the California Bay Area, and New York City. She has primarily focused on social equity, creative place

making, youth development, restorative practices, and parent and community engagement.

Renta’s hire is right ahead of Camp Liberty’s opening on June 27th where she will be on hand to meet campers and their parents. The camp’s sessions run until August 19th for children and teens between the ages of 6 and 15.

About Educational Arts Team: Educational Arts Team is a leader in arts education that provides a range of customizable school and professional development programs that address literacy, family literacy, equity and inclusiveness, drug prevention, learning loss recovery, anti-bullying, and writing skills to diverse communities living in Hudson, Bergen, Union, and Essex Counties.

The Team also runs Camp Liberty, a beloved Jersey City summer camp for children ages 6-15.

Tucked between buildings at the edge of Liberty State Park, the camp, with its open-air pavilion, swimming pool, and fairytale forest — where every tree was planted by staff or volunteers — provides a tranquil green space where urban youth can learn, grow, and create together. During a typical summer, 250 children from diverse backgrounds attend the camp daily. The ever-popular Jersey City Jazz Festival is back for a two-day celebration the weekend of June 4th and 5th in the Powerhouse Arts District. The free-tothe-public annual event will feature fourteen bands on two stages, food trucks, a full bar, and a VIP experience at the 107 Morgan Street lot in Jersey City.

The event is produced by the Jersey City-based non-profit Riverview Jazz and presented by Exchange Place Alliance.

The 2022 festival will coincide with another beloved annual event - Bike JC’s Ward Tour, Sunday, June 5th, which will culminate at this year’s jazz festival. There will also be an after-party jam session at Moore’s Place on Monticello Ave. More than 15,000 Jazz fans are expected to attend.

This year’s lineup features no shortage of talent among the fourteen diverse musical acts. Guitar aficionados will be in for a treat with an array of virtuosic performers including the world-renowned Julian Lage (6/5, 4pm), modern gypsy jazz artist Gonzalo Bergara (6/5, 2pm), flamenco master Andreas Arnold (6/4, 4pm), and the guitardriven roots spiritual ensemble Walter Parks and the Unlawful Assembly (6/5, 1pm). Hard core jazz lovers will be thrilled with crowd favorite Winard Harper and Jeli Posse (6/4, 3pm), vocalist and WBGO on-air personality Lezlie Harrison (6/4, 1pm), and jazz piano maestro David Kikoski (6/4, 2pm). As is the annual Jersey City Jazzfest tradition, both days will close out with

This program will support local artists and provide opportunities for Hudson County residents to engage with cultural programming this summer and fall.
