New Website Helps Women Make Lasting Friendships

asheer Zamata debuted on Saturday Night Live as the first AfricanAmerican woman to join the cast in six years, but if you want to see her in a funny video about a lonely tennis player in need of a buddy, go to Lumelle.com, a new website for women looking for their BFFs. Hoboken resident Nermin Jasani (pronounced Ner-meen), practiced law before deciding she’d rather pour her energies into helping women make lasting friendships.

Jasani developed Lumelle.com after moving to Manhattan from Buffalo and realizing life in the fast lane can be a lonely experience. To drive her message home, Jasani posted humorous videos on her new website Lumelle.com, one of

which stars Zamata before being cast on SNL. Jasani created Lumelle.com for women to get out of their techno-mindsets with texting and emails and communicate with other women looking to make friends face-to-face.

“The big picture is to get women connecting again,” Jasani says. “We’re in such a technology-driven era, it’s very isolating. I think technology is fantastic, but I want people to take the relationship off the internet. Lumelle accepts the world we are living in and accommodates people who are technology-driven and allows its users who are comfortable online to pull that relationship into the real world.” cont’d pg. 6

Ispresso at Park Coffee Shop gives Union City some Hip

City is a mish-mosh of commercial properties -pizzerias, candy stores and the occasional flower shop.

There are a few restaurants that stand out, places that offer good food at a fair price, but overall Park Avenue could use some ‘cool’.

In August 2013, I saw a new coffee shop open its doors and I had to check out the place – and boy am I glad I did. “ispresso at park” on the corner of 47th & Park is just a block south from my favorite Dunkin’ Donuts and I have since returned several times because the coffee is divine – like liquid velvet in a cup.

The atmosphere begins before you even walk through the door. Outside, nailed to the façade is a wooden chair with a white cup resting on the seat.

When you enter, the inside is clean and shiny, white walls and a smattering of tables and chairs that are both inviting and relaxing. On any given day, you’ll find people splayed about with their laptops engrossed in their work and their coffees. There are books and newspapers to read, DVDs you can watch (for free) and lovely knickknacks and drawings by local artists for sale. And the music is hip like the owners.

Inki Hong and Solim Choi are the architects not only of the coffee shop but the building it’s housed in.

The husband and wife team are professional architects who purchased the abandoned building, gutted and renovated it and now it’s

a modern three-unit apartment complex with ispresso at park in the storefront.

It was a fun challenge,” Inki says, after serving a customer a cup of Americano. “This is a unique “approach. My wife and I both like coffee – we drink

a lot of coffee – and we thought maybe this could be a hub for local artists and designers to go to share their ideas and show and sell their work.”

To get women to trust the website and see that making new friends can be fun, Jasani posted several funny videos including a woman deep in conversation at a fancy restaurant until you realize she’s talking to her toddler in the opposite chair. Another video shows a woman fixing her hair while having a conversation with an invisible friend. All the videos seem to illuminate the loneliness women experience when they don’t have a girlfriend to hang out with.

says “We came up with the idea to do the videos because I wanted to get people to trust me and the way you do that is you get them to laugh.”

These days, feeling isolated in a crowd seems to be the norm for lots of women, Jasani says, and it happens to her all the time.

When she goes to a café to work she says she rarely strikes up a conversation with another woman and instead busies herself with her iPad and cell phone.

That’s how she realized women needed a way to find each other away from the computer. Jasani came up with the idea for Lumelle.com after earning a law degree and moving to the Big Apple to work in a Cont’d on next page

“When I moved to New York City in 2010, I had no friends or family,” Jasani says. “The only person I knew was my roommate who I met on Craigslist. I thought it would be easy to find new friends, but it was easier to find a new date than a friend. I started thinking about that.”

After two years in Manhattan, she moved to Hoboken and still hadn’t made any friends.

“It made me feel really alone,” Jasani says. “I started talking to women randomly, asking them how they met their friends. I talked to my female coworkers, baristas and they

had the same response: it’s hard to make new friends especially in New York City. There are 10 million people here and it’s not easy. Everyone can relate to this struggle.”

That was just the impetus Jasani needed to start her own website for women – and not just young women, but women of all ages (over 18). And not just single women, but women who are married, divorced – Lumelle is inclusive of all women Jasani says.

Some women want a shopping buddy, others want a friend to hang out with and watch movies – Lumelle matches friends according to their likes. And since its debut in November, lots of women have signed up, Jasani says, like Anna Todaro of Houston, Texas.

“I am thrilled to hear the word is spreading about Lumelle.com,” Todaro says. “I met Nermin when I lived in New York City.

Recently, I had to move to Houston for work and have been going through the exact same struggles that inspired Nermin to create Lumelle.com in the first place. It’s HARD to meet new people, especially quality women that Cont’d on page 9

“I think Nermin is on the tipping point of a paradigm shift for the creation of meaningful and supportive friendships,” Todaro adds. “People find their husbands online. Why not find a few girls you can call friends that have already been selected as being highly correlated matches for you based on things you

like to do and are interested in.

“I have always been someone who values her friendships so much so that the majority of my girlfriends and I have been friends since we all met in kindergarten,” Todaro says. “It can be really hard to start over, make new friends, especially in a new city. Lumelle gives you the direct link to meet likeminded women and become part of a community that supports genuine

friendship.”

Anna Ivaknik who resides in Soho joined Lumelle, bonded with a woman and already they’ve gone out several times.

“My new friend has a tech start-up, is in her late 20s and is as nice as can be,” Ivaknik says. “Tonight we have dinner plans where we will introduce our husbands to each other and hopefully they’ll hit it off so we can all start hanging out together. I’m launching a lingerie line for full-figured women called Delicate Curves and I love the fact

that I have access to meet other young women that share my entrepreneurial spirit. I think the community works and is a much needed tool for young, driven women.”

In the future, Lumelle will be sponsoring gettogether events for women, too. Meanwhile, Jasani is tracking her new website’s progress and says it’s very satisfying seeing women use the site. But don’t try to look up the website’s name in your French dictionary; Jasani made up the word ‘Lumelle’ as a combination of ‘lume’ for illuminate and ‘elle’ which is French for woman.

“I was trying to think of unique names that are pretty, easy to say and can be typed easily,” Jasani

says. “My definition for Lumelle is bringing light to women.”

PHOTOREALISM REVISITED Sixty works from some of the most well-known Photorealist artists from the Louis K. Meisel Gallery, Bernaducci Meisel Gallery, and Eileen S. Kaminsky Family Foundation Collections are on display in the exhibit Photorealism Revisited. Since the late 1960s, Photorealism—the first modern movement to promote photography as an integral part of the artistic process—has been an influential force on the art scene.

Many of the works in Photorealism Revisited focus on images of urban and suburban landscapes and subjects like trucks, motorcycles, cars, and roadside eateries. Works

“We did a lot of coffee shop projects,” Inki says.

“Coffee refreshes our mind when we are working on a project.”

There is a sort of Zenlike experience when making coffee and Inki puts his heart into every cup. They drip the coffee by hand and the flavors are seasonal.

The winter offerings are Brooklyn Wythe, Passeio and Andino coffees and they serve Espresso, Americano and Latte. They serve Caramel Macchiato, French Vanilla Latte, Chai Latte (tea), Mocha Latte (coffee with chocolate powder) and Pumpkin Spice Latte. Iced coffee are on the menu, too, but that doesn’t mean they throw old brews into a cup of ice. Nope. The iced coffees are brewed separately.

GARY LICHTENSTEIN EDITIONS WITH CHARLES HINMAN Gary Lichtenstein Editions at Mana Contemporary is an exhibit of a new silkscreen collaboration with recently created 3-D paintings by Charles Hinman.

Lichtenstein is known for his spectacular use of color within prints that simultaneously exhibit mastery of the properties of light absorption and reflection.

Lichtenstein has collaborated with over ninety artists during the course of his thirty-five year career but considers the Hinman edition both unique and historic in form, size and scale.

Hinman is known for his exploration of the 3-D canvas, specifically the ways in which he creates a visual dialogue between the illusory space of the painting and the actual space on which the sculptured object rests. Hinman embraces contrast on multiple levels, through his use of color, texture, light and shadow.

He is no stranger to the world of silkscreen printing and this newest collaboration will introduce the first of the 3-D print editions.

SALA GASPAR: THE HISTORY This exhibit is a retrospective that celebrates the gallery in Barcelona that brought the work of artists like Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso to the masses and made them international legends of the art world.

John and Toni Brown of West New York stopped by for a cup of Hot Chocolate and a Pumpkin Spice Latte.

Working on a book together, the couple are regulars who see ispresso at park as a cool place to hang out.

“I love it here,” Toni says. “You can relax and unwind. As an artist, I can see other people’s art work on the walls.”

“It has a very friendly and exciting atmosphere,” John adds. “If you go to a regular coffee shop, they just throw it together. Here, the coffee is organic, it’s fresh. Inki makes it with love.”

Inki and Solim somehow find the time to raise a baby and run their architectural firm in New York and ispresso at park in Union City. Juggling two businesses with a family can be tough, but it seems to be

Jersey City Comedy Festival Returns March 30th After a successful first year, the Jersey City Comedy Festival returns this spring and will run from Sun, March 30th through Sat, April 5th. This year’s festival is being presented by Dos Equis beer and will take place in a number of different venues throughout Jersey City. In addition to a variety of stand-up showcases, the 2014 Jersey City Comedy Festival will present sketch comedy, live podcasts, book readings, short film presentations, and two different group art shows. Founded last year by local comedian Craig Mahoney, the first Jersey City Comedy Festival took place over 6 nights, comprised of 18 different shows in 14 different venues throughout the city. About 125 different comedians participated and over a 1,000 people came out to enjoy the shows. Announcements will be coming regarding performers, venues, and schedule specifics. Adding to the popularity of these social -singing clubs is social media and sites like Facebook where there is an entire subculture of Doo-Wop singers According to Stu Pushkin the NJ Doo-Wop Group Harmony Singers Club founder and vocalist in the clubs house group “Still Around.”

“We are bringing people who love the Doo-Wop Acapella genre together for an afternoon, they get out do some singing meet some old and new friends, We’re keeping our music alive, it really is a great time.”

The NJ Doo-Wop Group Harmony Singers Club meets one Sunday a month and a lot goes on at one of these meet ups.

Sometimes a surprise vocal group will show up and perform or a soloist will take the stage.

The real appeal for people attending is to sing Doo -Wop Acapella and form on-the -spot impromptu groups.

At any meetup you will find groups of 4, 5, and 6 people tucked into corners or bathrooms harmonizing to a song from the past.

Russ Capo who sang with several groups in the 60s told the River View Observer “ It really is a great way to spend an afternoon. I have made a few friends here and if I am not singing myself, I get to listen and there is a great deal of talent that come to the clubs meet up.”

hob’art Artists in Anniversary Exhibition

Four artist members of hob’art gallery will be represented in the 30th Anniversary exhibition at the Ceres Gallery, 547 West 27th Street, New York City. The artists are Pauline Chernichaw, Liz Cohen, Roslyn Rose, and Meredeth Turshen. The exhibition opened on January 4, 2014 and will continue until the 31st of January. A reception to meet the artists will be held on Wednesday, January 15th, from 6 to 8pm.

Thirty years ago, an extraordinary group of women conceived of an organization to lend support and provide exhibition space for women artists. The organization, Ceres, created and continues to provide an environment

that fosters artistic exploration in a vibrant feminist community. This exhibition presents work by one hundred and seven Ceres’ artists, past and present, in painting, photography, drawing, sculpture and mixed-media. Each artist is represented by her personal vision and the combined synergy of this diverse and powerful artistic production creates a remarkable visual document commemorating an organization that continues to fulfill its worthy mission.

Bayonne Bridge Closings Most Nights in January and February Cont’d from page 4

In the first two months of 2014, the bridge will be closed Monday through Thursday from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., and from 12:00 midnight Friday to 8:00 a.m. Saturday. The hours on Fridays differ from those of the other nights, because Mayor Mark A. Smith asked the Port Authority not to disrupt the busy Friday night trade at the food, beverage, and entertainment businesses on Route 440. During January and February, there will be no night closings on Saturday and Sunday overnights and holiday weekends. During closure hours for the

Bayonne Bridge, all traffic will be diverted to the Goethals Bridge.

The Port Authority has also advised the City of Bayonne that up to eight full weekend closures of the Bayonne Bridge will be required each year during the construction period.

These weekend closures will be announced in advance. The dates are not yet available. There will be no weekend closures on Saturday and Sunday overnights in the summer or on holiday weekends.
