Filming in Connecticut on a recent Thursday afternoon, Mr. Pastore took a mid-afternoon break to talk with River View Observer (RVO) about his career as an actor, playwright, and

RVO: Where did you grow up? Where were you born and raised?

VP: I grew up in New Rochelle, New York. I lived all over New Rochelle, till I was 50. That’s where I grew up and that’s where I had my nightclubs.

RVO: Did you ever hang out in Jersey before filming the Sopranos?

VP: I would go to Hoboken a lot because in the 1990s, [worked with playwright Louis LoRusso who lived in Hoboken. And I got to Asbury Park. We filmed (The Sopranos) in Kearny, Harrison, and then we filmed the rest at the Silvercup Studios. Kearny was our home base.

RVO: Do you remember the early days of The Sopranos? When did you know it was a hit?

VP: I was really really lucky. When we were doing

those early episodes, there was nothing about the show on TV. We knocked off 13 shows and then HBO aired it. I was with Dominic Chianese and Tony Sirico at the Left Bank (restaurant on 42nd Street) in Manhattan. Someone asked us, did you see what they did at the corner? So, we walked to Times Square and there was a billboard with The Sopranos on it.

That’s when things started to change for all of us.

Then we had a premiere at a small venue on Broadway, and we went to the after party at John’s Pizzeria. Bruce Springsteen was there hanging out with us, I met Bruce then, and you say to yourself, my life is gonna change. Then we went to L.A. for the Emmys, then for the SAG Awards.

RVO: Before acting, you were a nightclub owner?

VP: Before I became an actor, had a club called Crazy Horse and I was doing theater—stage work. I would hire kids from the community theater to tend bar, do my lights. Way back then at the Crazy Horse we had that feeling of theater. Film work started for me with TRUE LOVE with Aida Turturro and we both ended up on THE SOPRANOS. RVO: How important are connections when building your career?

VP: You need somebody to give you a break, that’s the name of the game. Danny Aiello, who I knew through Louis LoRusso, gave me my first break. He brought me to Canada for THE LAST DON. Cont’d on page 4

A

s Executive Director of the Golden Door International Film Festival in Jersey City, Michele Sorvino sees hundreds of Indie films by filmmakers here in New Jersey and beyond. Now in its 6th year, the Festival has helped many filmmakers gain exposure for their work and break through both professionally and commercially, Sorvino says.

To help them promote their films via local TV, Sorvino hosts Inside Hollywood on the Hudson, a weekly talk show that airs on Comcast’s channel 51 where filmmakers – and other creatives connected with the movie business – can discuss their films and show clips of their work.

Sorvino interviews a myriad of people working in the film industry. She recently lined up an interview with members of the New Jersey Motion Picture and Television Commission to discuss filmmaking in New Jersey; the show airs Feb. 23. On another episode, Sorvino interviewed local filmmaker Gregory Allen of Harrison whose film MOTHER deals with drug addiction; and a mother’s unconditional love.

“It’s a talk show about film and another platform for film people to promote

their film on TV,” Sorvino says. “It’s an important next step for filmmakers to have an outlet. At Golden Door, we screen films during the festival and do smaller events throughout the year, With the talk show, we give filmmakers another opportunity to promote their work.”

Inside Hollywood on the Hudson is about bringing awareness to film, art and moviemaking in New Jersey, Sorvino says. It gives local filmmakers, photographers and artists the opportunity to discuss their work and have that conversation reach a wider audience through TV. “I’m not a trained actor or actress and I have no real training in TV and communications,” Sorvino says. “I was asked to host the show and honored to be asked.”

Sorvino has hosted six episodes, so far, she says, and she’s learned a lot about the art of conversation and how to help guests tell their stories. Sometimes, it can be harder than it looks.

“I’ve learned a lot,” Sorvino says. “There were times where I thought I was prepared, but I wasn’t prepared for the responses I got. Sometimes you have a guest that isn’t as chatty as you thought they were going to be. You have to compensate for that. Sometimes you have to pull the answers out of your guest.”

certain insights when it comes to independent filmmaking. She’s learned that sometimes there’s no formula when it comes to what makes a hit. A great film can come from the smallest budget; a dud can be costly.

“For me, I’ve had the opportunity to speak to so many filmmakers through Golden Door, nothing surprises me now when it comes to filmmaking,” Sorvino says. “You can do a film on a low-budget, and have the most amazing cast, crew and editor; or, you can spend a million and the film stinks.”

Recently, Sorvino had the opportunity to interview Janet Grillo, the director of JACK OF THE RED HEARTS, which will be released in theaters in New York and L.A. on Feb. 26.

“Janet won Best Director at the Golden Door and now the film is coming out in theaters,” Sorvino says.

“That film is an amazing film. It’s about a troubled

teenager who becomes a caretaker for an autistic girl.”

“I love to highlight Hudson County filmmakers,” Sorvino says. “I like to highlight films that raise awareness on disabilities

and autism. I’m open to anything. It’s always very interesting to have on the show filmmakers, costume designers, set designers— anyone in the film industry.”

Frank Vincent, another friend, I met him when he did RAGING BULL. RVO:Since you played a “wiseguy” on THE SOPRANOS, are you typecast?

VP: Not really. I just did a movie in Connecticut with Tom Sizemore and I played a bar-owner, so I don’t always play ‘wiseguys’. I’m shooting a move next week in Harlem. I’m playing a Latin drug dealer. I play a gangster when it’s offered to me.

RVO: You played a musical gangster in BULLETS OVER BROADWAY based on Woody Allen’s film?

VP: Yes. I remember, we were having a read through of BULLETS OVER BROADWAY and I’m sitting next to this kid Nick Cordero who’s playing Cheech. He’s sitting next to me, and he says, this is a pretty good experience, I hope I make it to the next level. And I said to him, I don’t know if they’re going to keep me, either. I got cancer. I don’t know if I’m going to make it. Well, I never missed a show. I was singing and dancing up there. And Nicky got nominated for a Tony Award for Cheech. He’s doing A BRONX TALE now. He

didn’t know his future; I didn’t know mine. And now, I’m cancer-free.

RVO: And now you’re singing in a band?

VP: The Sopranos to me was 15 years ago. That’s why I run around with my band now. These guys played at my club Crazy Horse. And when I play with my band, I get a big SOPRANOS following who come to see me perform.

RVO: You’ve been a nightclub owner, an actor, and now you’re singing?

You seem to have reinvented yourself several times. Why? Cont’d on page 5

Cont’d from page 4 VP: You gotta reinvent yourself, or else you go nuts, I was a nightclub owner for 30 years. I just finished a movie last week, I have a theater company called Renegade in New York City with Maureen Van Zandt, the wife of “Little Steven” Van Zandt.

Our next production is March 29th at the Crane Theater in New York City.

It’s a week of one-acts, and one is a play I wrote called, MAMA’S CHAIR. It’s about a son who confronts his father about his mother’s death. I also wrote a play called CRAZY HORSE, based on my life in the 80s, in New Rochelle running bars. What we do as entertainers, we try to take all that in from our experience and we develop things.

RVO: Any thoughts of retiring?

VP: I’m not going to sit home and just watch soap operas. As soon as I get up in the morning I’m constantly busy, putting shows together, auditioning for a TV show. When I hang up the phone, I have someone coming over who runs lines with me for my movies. I also try to have fun.

RVO: Do you have any advice for up-and-coming actors trying to break into show business?

VP: A lot of the movies up for Academy Awards, these are special movies from 2015, That’s why they got nominated. As an actor you gotta find something special. I was lucky with The

Sopranos, but yours ship can sink if don’t go out there and get work. What am I doing today? I’m producing directing and writing one-acts. I’m working with a rock-and-roll band once or twice a week, and I’m looking for work as an actor. You say yes to everything. You say, let me try to get this done in my life. If you say no, they’re not going to ask you again.

New, Jersey City Hi-Rise helps define Lafayette Neighborhood

Located west of

Liberty State Park, and similar to other changing communities in Jersey City, Lafayette is the city’s newest up-and-coming neighborhood. A new addition in the works for Lafayette is the Baker Building by Point Capital Development, a collection of luxury apartments under construction at 234 Suydam Avenue.

The Baker Building has a total of 83 units priced from $1,500-$2,450 per month for 1-2-and-3 bedroom rentals. Public amenities include on-site

parking, a gym, and on each floor, a laundry room; a fire pit, cooking grills, dog run, and on-site management. Baker Building is located between the Liberty State Park and Garfield Avenue stops on the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, and is less than one mile from both Liberty State Park and the Liberty Science Center.

RVO: How would you describe the Baker Building to someone only generally familiar with Jersey City?

JF: In a nutshell: A firstclass building that is an affordable answer to luxury living in a high-cost area.

JF: The Lafayette neighborhood is underappreciated, because although it is very close to downtown, it is seen as a periphery neighborhood with a lot of vacant, former industrial uses.

RVO: Was it always the plan to put this building in the Lafayette area? Was its design specific to this lot of land?

JF: The design is specific to the site and the neighborhood. I’ve completed 11 projects in downtown Jersey City over the last 10 years, and six additional projects in other wards of the city. In 2013, I saw the downtown land costs start to rise dramatically and that’s when I started looking in Lafayette It took me over a year before I found this site. When you move

out of a well-established area, you have to have very specific criteria in order to ensure the project’s success. I like geographically definable areas, preferably with un-crossable boundaries, that drive development vertically, rather than sprawl it.

I also wanted to be close to mass transit and I wanted a parcel large enough for a substantial project that would make an impact.

I also wanted something that would either reclaim unused land or repurpose an existing structure, so there wouldn’t be a concern about displacing current residents. I found all of that at the end of Suydam Avenue. The long side

fronting Suydam is clad in brick to evoke a feeling of the area’s industrial past; and the back, which faces NYC, is clad in alternating colored panels for a more modern look. The intent is to capture the juxtaposition of old and new in an area in transition.

Del Frisco’s Grille expands Hoboken’s Culinary Horizons

ip. Cool. It’s the kind of place where you might see Jerry Seinfeld hauling his kids into a booth for the Grille Prime Cheeseburger; or maybe a group from Google stopping in for drinks and the Cheesesteak Eggrolls.

Those are just a couple of the signature dishes served at Hoboken’s newest waterfront eatery Del Frisco’s Grille with floor to ceiling windows that frame the New York Skyline like giant picture postcards. The restaurant is really big and sectioned off with a sexy bar center stage – alone to itself like a floating island of boozy swank. Rows of booths branch out from the bar’s central location; there’s a private dining room too; and an outdoor patio facing the Skyline for when the weather’s nice.

The restaurant opened back in September 2015, says Danielle Polimeni, General Manager of Dl Frisco’s Grille. Polimeni welcomes guests with a professional yet laid back style. This restaurant is all about great food, and service, in an atmosphere where you can unwind. The view’s not bad either.

“The location speaks for itself,” Polimeni says.

“Cruise ships, sunsets, the Empire State Building, the Freedom Tower. There’s so much to see. Then when

you look south, you see the Lackawanna Clock Tower.

They’re done a great job honoring Hoboken’s history.”

History seems to be the feel the owners of Del Frisco’s are going for: a mix of old meets new, Polimeni says. The restaurant is owned by a group of partners that own restaurants nationwide including Del Frisco’s at 30 Rock in Manhattan.

Modern American cuisine is how Polimeni describes the menu which features plenty of steak and meat dishes with some seafood dishes as well. Noted on the menu are Del Frisco’s signature dishes and those that are gluten-free; the menu is the creation of Corporate Executive Chef Thomas Dristas.

The dinner menu features “Food to Fight Over” (appetizers) “Greens Big & Small” (salads) “Two Fisted Sandwiches”, and “Knife & Fork” (main dishes).

The Food to Fight Over plates include the signature Cheesesteak Eggrolls served with Sweet & Spicy Chili Sauce and Honey Mustard; Ahi Tacos with Tuna Tartare, Avocado and Spicy Citrus Mayo; the Fire Roasted Artichoke; and

Deviled Eggs. There’s also the Jumbo Lump Crabcake served with Cajun Lobster Sauce. ($11-$16.50) The salads feature the Steakhouse Salad with broiled Prime Sliced Steak; the Heirloom Tomato & Burrata Salad; and the Kale & Brussels Sprouts Salad. ($11.50-$18.50)

There are Brunch & Lunch Menus – the Red Velvet Belgian Waffle looks delish on the Brunch menu –and desserts feature a Coconut Cream Pie with White Chocolate Shavings. This dessert gets four fabulous stars for flavor, texture, creaminess and ultimate taste-bud delight.

Hand-Crafted Cocktails like the Pomegranate Margarita ($12) and the Adult Milkshake ($10) are Drink Menu standouts and there are bottled and draft brews; and wines and champagne.

Yelp posts about Del Frisco’s Grille are mostly raves like this one from Christine A. of Hoboken who posted, “This is a welcome addition to the neighborhood, considering the only other steak houses are Arthur’s Tavern (3rd and Washington) and Dino and Harry’s (14th and Garden).

This is the hipper version of a steakhouse - it’s not “old” and stuffy and it’s not divey either…I wasn’t super hungry this time around so only ordered a spicy pork flatbread and the signature ahi tuna entrée.
