New initiative addresses entertainment industry demand in the Garden State.
Hudson County Community College (HCCC) participated in the launch of the New Jersey Film Academy at Brookdale College. HCCC will begin offering the course, “Script to Screen: Introduction to the Entertainment Industry,” on April 7, 2025. New Jersey is considered the birthplace of the silent film era that featured the work of director D.W. Griffith and stars Mary Pickford, Lillian Gish, Lionel Barrymore, and the Marx Brothers along the Hudson River. In the serial “The Perils of Pauline,” damsel in distress Pearl White was seen clinging
to the cliffs of the Fort Lee Palisades. Actors, studios, and production crews later relocated to Hollywood. A century later, the Garden State is reclaiming its status as a hub for film and television production. Netflix and Lionsgate expansions into New Jersey, as well as Palisades Stages in Kearny, and Cinelease
Hudson County Community College (HCCC) is one of the first four community colleges to participate in a statewide initiative to train students for careers in film and television production. Supported by the New Jersey Council of County Colleges (NJCCC) and New Jersey Business & Industry Association’s (NJBIA) New Jersey Pathways to Career Opportunities, the initiative in partnership with the New Jersey Film Academy will offer comprehensive training in the entertainment industry. Those who successfully complete the Academy’s curriculum will receive a certificate of completion and connections to internships and entry-level jobs.
The New Jersey Film
Academy offers four curriculum courses that were modeled on a best-in-class program: Introduction to the Entertainment Industry, On-set Production, Production Office and Accounting, and Hair, Makeup, and Wardrobe. Beginning April 7, HCCC will offer “Script to Screen: Introduction to the Entertainment Industry,” the prerequisite course required for the three other courses. The nine-week, $375 course runs Monday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. in rigorous, college-level classes at the HCCC Journal Square Campus. Students will learn industry standards, practices and procedures; script development including group writing and story pitching; on-set safety, audiovisuals, and documents; production, post-production and distribution; and more. The
course is taught by Hisani P. Dubose who brings nearly three decades of experience performing in film, television and theater to her instruction.
“Hudson County Community College is fertile ground for the entertainment industry that enriches our lives through cinema and TV,” said HCCC President Dr. Christopher Reber. “Many great films like the Bob Dylan biopic ‘A Complete Unknown’ were produced here in Hudson County. We are honored to be among the first community colleges to help lead this industry comeback in New Jersey.”To learnmore about HCCC “Script to Screen: Introduction to the Entertainment Industry” email HCCCFilmAcademy@ hccc.edu. Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that the Bayonne City Council approved a contract for the second phase of the Broadway paving project at its meeting on March 19. The contract was awarded to 4-CLEAN UP for an amount not to exceed $1,846,992.45. Funding for the project was provided by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT). Mayor Davis said, “I would like to thank Governor Phil Murphy, NJDOT Commissioner Fran O’Connor, and our state legislators for supporting Bayonne’s paving program each year. We will continue to make careful use of state and federal funding to resurface streets throughout Bayonne.”
The first phase of the current Broadway paving project resurfaced Broadway from the City Line at 55th Street down to 41st Street. The second phase of the Broadway paving project will resurface Broadway between 41st Street and 19th Street. Another portion of Phase II will pave Broadway between 10th Street and Evergreen Street.
The project generally consists of the resurfacing and reconstruction of Broadway including but not limited to Hot Mix Asphalt milling and/or pavement repairs, installation of new concrete curbs adjacent to the curb ramps, sidewalk and curb ramps, installation of asphalt, storm/sanitary sewer structure improvements, and related work within
the City of Bayonne. City officials expect 4-CLEAN UP to begin working on handicap ramps in April. That work will take six-to-eight weeks. The ramps will comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Paving is expected to take place in June. Paving project work will take place on weekdays only, beginning at 7:00 a.m. and ending at 4:00 p.m. The crews will mill and clear existing road surfaces before paving.
As the paving project gets ready to start, signs will be posted at least 48 hours in advance to advise residents and motorists of the impact the work will have on parking and driving on the affected streets.

KIRKLAND BRAY
Kirkland Bray is a painter and mixed-media artist best known for his paintings depicting overwhelming crowds within serene environments. The idea of overpopulation, perhaps in the planetary sense, or even a result of social media oversharing by prior visitors could be taken as serious societal commentary, or as comedic mockery. Kirkland often uses unnatural dye patterns on discarded canvas as backdrops for these paintings and identifies Dada art as a direct influence, especially for its existence as a reaction to society at the time.
