he doesn’t play a note of music, yet Merina Garcia has spent the past three years setting up the Union City Music Project for inner city kids. Like Harold Hill in the Broadway musical THE MUSIC MAN, Garcia believes every kid deserves to know the joy of playing a musical instrument.

“I always wanted to be a musician but never had the opportunity,” Garcia says, while children in a trumpet class a few feet away practice scales. “As long as I can remember I wanted to play the violin. Two of my aunts were students in El Sistema in Venezuela where I grew up, I used to see them run home from school, eat quickly, change and go to the orchestra.
