Green light for Supermacs? Chris Ashmore chris@letterkennypost.com
Donegal Co. Council has given the green light for the construction of a two-storey Supermac’s restaurant and take-away close to the busy Station Roundabout in Letterkenny. However, an appeal regarding the decision could yet be made to An Bord Pleanala. Plans for the project in a high profile area close to the roundabout by the Letterkenny Shopping Centre, were first submitted in 2017, but a number of objections followed. Concerns were expressed about trafficrelated issues, litter, and aspects of the town development plan. Issues were also raised in relation to the site. The local authority subsequently sought additional information and revised plans. The planning application included a 198 page Traffic and Transport Assessment. The revised plans provide for the demolition of an old vacant shed and the construction of a new building with 25 car parking spaces. Supermac’s is one of Ireland’s biggest fast food and take-away chains. It wants to build a two-storey restaurant with drive-in facilities and parking. The company says it will create approximately 25 jobs if the project goes ahead.
Offences in Letterkenny dwarf those of other towns in Donegal
PUBLIC DISORDER FIGURES UP Chris Ashmore chris@letterkennypost.com
The number of public order and other “social code” offences in the Letterkenny Garda District in 2017 was greater than the figure for the next ten highest ranking towns for this category, according to the most recent crime figures. A total of 510 public order and social code offences were recorded by An Garda Siochana in Letterkenny in 2017. The combined total for the next highest ranking towns in this category amounted to a total of 507. Buncrana came next with 123 of-

fences, followed by Bundoran on 102 and Ballybofey on 92 while Donegal Town made up the top five with 42. The rest of the top ten were: Ballyshannon (28), Milford (27), Carndonagh (20), Clonmany (19) and Dungloe (18). The figures for 2018 will not be released until December next year. The actual number of public order and social code offences last year was higher than in 2016 (491), and 2015 (407), following a decline every year from 2008 – when there was a peak of 1,091 - to 2015. Indeed, the figure for last year in Letterkenny (510) is less than half the figure of 1,091 at the end of the Celtic Tiger era in 2008.
The latest crime figures, released by the Central Statistics Office, also reveal that Letterkenny had the highest number of “controlled drug offences” of any Donegal garda station by some distance. The number of offences in this category in 2017 stood at 122 in Letterkenny, compared with 31 in Bundoran, 29 in Ballyshannon, 18 in Ballybofey and 16 in Buncrana. Of some concern is the fact that the Letterkenny figure (122) was the third year in a row that it has increased and is more than twice the number of controlled drug offences (59) reported in 2014, which was the lowest over the past ten years. Not unexpectedly, given that it
has a bigger population than any other garda district in Co. Donegal, Letterkenny had the highest number of burglary and related offences recorded in 2017, at 95. But there was clearly a spike in crime in the Finn Valley with Ballybofey the next highest on 17, with Raphoe (12), Newtowncunningham (10), Convoy (9), Castlefin (7) and Lifford (4), all reporting an increase on the previous year. These latest CSO figures are “Under Reservation” due to some concerns about the completeness and accuracy of the figures which are derived from the Garda Siochana’s “Pulse” system. Some of the figures are likely to be revised.
