Ray D'Arcy bringing radio show home to Kildare for 'Run with Ray' initiative

RTE Radio 1’s The Ray D’Arcy Show takes the show on the road this June as Ray heads up a new campaign - Run With Ray encouraging people in their communities to get out and get active. Over five days from June 10, Ray will be broadcasting from Cork, Limerick City, Wexford, Co. Kildare and Dublin from 3pm to 4.30pm. Ray will then unplug and join the start line with runners in each community as they sign up to run alongside the star. Speaking at the launch yesterday, Ray said: “When I go for a run and you feel lithe and athletic and you think ‘I like this feeling.’ I go for five or

six runs a week.” “I’m an evangelist for running because it’s so simple, I don’t know what I’d be like if I didn’t run, I’m probably slightly addicted which isn’t healthy. “I get a bit grumpy if I don’t get a run in,” he told the Irish Mirror. Meanwhile, D’Arcy has slammed rumours that his Saturday night TV show is getting the axe but the RTE star has admitted he has lost sleep over his radio ratings in the past. The veteran broadcaster is taking a break from our screens for the summer as comedian Tommy Tiernan brings his show to Saturday nights on RTE One for an

eight-week stint. But D’Arcy took aim at false rumblings that his rating winning show faced the chop. Ray, 54, told the Irish Mirror: “There’s no question mark over my show coming back. “A Paper never refuses ink, they have to dream up some story, they add two and two and come out with five.As we all know two and two equals four and I’ll be back in September and I’m really looking forward to it.” The Kildare native added: “We had a great season, we were up on the year before, the only entertainment show on RTE that was up in the ratings.

Ray is a regular runner and promotes the healthy benefits of exercise “Everybody was really happy with it and right to the end it was very strong.” The veteran broadcaster started in radio and TV some 31 years ago, and despite his longevity in the business he admits he feels insecure.

He explained: “You never feel secure, I’m very insecure in what I do, you go from contract to contract depending on somebody liking what you do.” The star revealed how he often lost sleep over the radio

ratings over the years. He said: “We have the JNLR results every three months. It’s scary, it’s only recently that I stopped losing sleep the night before, I guess it comes with age and you think what will be will be.”

Dad’s last sighting of Ana with one of boys accused of her murder Anastasia Kriegel’s father has described seeing his 14-year-old daughter walking away from their home with one of the boys accused of her murder 20 minutes before her phone tried to call her mother’s workplace, and half an hour before the State believe she was dead. Patric Kriegel knew that she meant it when she told him that she “wouldn’t be long”. She was happy and had “a big smile”. He was giving evidence to the Central Criminal Court yesterday, Wednesday, May 1, on the second day of the trial of two teenagers charged with murdering the Leixlip schoolgirl. Mr Kriegel told Brendan Grehan SC, prosecuting, that he looked at his watch as they walked away. It was 5pm. It’s the State’s case that she was dead by 5.32pm, when her phone was last active. The prosecution argues that the boy her father saw had lured her from her home to a dirty, derelict farmhouse, where he voyeuristically watched the other boy sexually assault and murder her.

The late Ana Kriegel, above. Two boys are on trial accused of her murder at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin (pictured right)

Charges faced The two teenagers are charged with murdering Anastasia at Glenwood House, Laraghcon, Clonee Road, Lucan on May 14, last year. The accused, who are both 14, cannot be named because they are minors. They each pleaded not guilty. Boy A is further charged with Anastasia’s aggravated sexual assault in a manner that involved serious violence to her. He also pleaded not guilty to that count. Mr Kriegel said that his daughter had begun walking while listening to music in the evenings once they had become brighter. She would never leave the house without her blue headphones and she knew that there was a strict rule not to be out after dark. “She loved listening to music. She loved walking. Sometimes she’d go for an hour and half,” he recalled. “At that stage, I could know where she was. We have an app, Find my iPhone. We could see exactly where she was. But she left the family sharing from the app and then I couldn’t see where she was.” This inability to see her

location was how things stood when she went missing. He recalled being out in the back garden when he heard the doorbell ring at 4.55pm that day. He heard the door open and made his way to the hall. He hadn’t expected it to be for Ana, as nobody ever called for her. The trial has already heard that she was a loner. “I did see Ana at the front door talking to somebody but she was whispering,” he said. “I think a lot of teenagers seem to whisper quite a lot.” He said that she went back upstairs very quickly and came back down with her distinctive black hoodie. “I said: ‘Ana, you know you are supposed to study’, because she had exams the next week,” he recalled. “She said: ‘Oh, nobody told me that’. I said: ‘Ok, but don’t be long’. She said, ‘No, I won’t be long’ and I believe that she meant it.” He said that he knew by the way she said these words that

% 50OFF

UP TO she ‘meant exactly that’. “She gave me a big smile when she left. She was happy,” he said. “I had forgotten to ask her where she was going,” he explained. “Normally I would ask.” So he looked out the front window and saw her walking towards the local park with a boy, now known to be Boy B. He checked his watch and it was five o’clock. Mr Grehan later showed him a still from CCTV footage, capturing them walking away one minute later. He identified his daughter in the still, walking a number of paces behind Boy B. “It appears that they’re not talking to each other as well, because of the distance between them,” remarked Mr Kriegel. The trial continues this before Mr Justice Paul McDermott and a jury of eight men and four women. It is expected to last about six weeks at the Central Criminal Court.

Naas Hospital patients face delays of two years for bone density scans Louise McCarthy editor@kildarepost.com

Naas Hospital is now working on patients from 2017 waiting for bone density scans due to a lack of radiographers, despite assurances from Minister for Health Simon Harris earlier this year that services would resume. New GP referrals for vital scans to diagnose osteoporosis in people, typically over 50 years old, stopped taking place at Naas Hospital 12 months ago. However, despite reassurances from the Minister for Health in a letter to North Kildare TD, Frank O’Rourke, that normal services would resume at Naas due to recruitment of radiographers, no new patients are being seen for Dexa scans. A staff member at the radiology department in Naas, says that, due to lack of staff, they are now working on appointments for 2017,

with new referrals being sent on to Clane for private and Tallaght for public. A North Kildare woman in her early fifties, who is diagnosed with osteopenia, when bones are weaker than normal, and is receiving calcium tablets, is now awaiting an appointment for a bone density scan to see if she has osteoporosis. She is on the medical card and will be waiting until December for an appointment at St Vincent’s Hospital.

Holding out She said: “I rang so many hospitals and was refused. I am holding out for as long as I can, before I am forced to go private. December is a long time to wait.” A Kildare GP says that delays with Dexa scans lead to delays in putting patients on the correct medication. Generally, people should not be waiting more than three months for an appointment, but a backlog at Naas, due to lack of resources,

Lack of staff at Naas Hospital leaves no space for new referrals for Dexa scans means many public patients are being forced to pay at least €100 for a scan that should be

provided free on the medical card. Deputy Frank O’Rourke

says that he plans to raise the delays with reopening the Dexa scan service at Naas

7

Hospital to normal service in the Dáil next week. The letter from Minister Harris to Deputy O’Rourke in January 24, last, said: “The HSE has informed my Department that the position in relation to Dexa scanning in hospitals in the Dublin Midlands Hospital Group is as follows: Naas General Hospital; Dexa scans are provided to outpatients and GP patients on their current waiting list. The hospital has recently recruited additional radiographers to fill existing vacancies and a further recruitment campaign is being held to fill the remaining vacancies. St James’s Hospital provides a Dexa scanning service and accepts GP referrals. “Tallaght University Hospital provides a limited Dexa scanning service. The hospital accepts referrals from their consultants and their NCHDs. The Midlands Regional Hospital, Tullamore expects to commence a Dexa scanning service in April of this year.”

Kildare man spends three nights on A&E trolley due to weekend overcrowding Kim O’Leary

A County Kildare man spent three nights on a hospital trolley in A&E at Naas Hospital as he sought treatment for a serious illness at the weekend, amidst concerns of overcrowding at the hospital, with 432 patients without beds in April. Speaking to The Kildare Post, the family of the man, who is a former member of the Defence Forces, said that while they are “eternally grateful” to staff at Naas Hospital for saving his life, they expressed their dismay at the high level of overcrowding in hospitals. “He cannot call a nurse if he is in pain or sick as he is practically non-verbal, now he can’t even ask for a drink if he is thirsty. “He saves the few words he has now for ‘God bless’; ‘thank you’ or ‘I love you’. He cannot turn himself on the trolley and is without a doubt easy to be forgotten about in here. I would hate to think

how it would be if someone wasn’t here with him all the time. Would they have the time and patience to sit and feed him his dinner an hour?” said the man’s daughter — the family does not wish to be named. “I’m not questioning his medical treatment as yet again they have saved dad’s life for the second time in two months and for that I am eternally grateful. “But the system is poor, it’s a poor reflection on our government. But it’s a reflection of how our government feel about our sickest, and when you’re sick you are at your most vulnerable. Most give out at their treatment at times like this and vow to do something about it when they can, but when they are out of it they are just glad it’s over and hope it doesn’t happen again. “As our dad spent his whole life in the service of others one of his famous statements to us and his students was ‘a society is judged by how we treat the least of our

Naas, Co. Kildare T: 045 409192

brethren’, but unfortunately when it came to his turn it is denied to him,” she said. It is understood that the family requested the VHI hospital closer to home to assess him to see if he was suitable for its services and he was eventually treated for pneumonia at home. His daughter said: “Thankfully they agreed to treat dad’s pneumonia at home and as a result we took him out on Saturday. I was at my wits’ end on Friday night, it was a horrible experience.” According to the INMO, overcrowding was down at Naas Hospital from 425 patients without beds in March 2019 to 432 patients without beds in April at the facility. In addition, the INMO said that this year has seen the ‘worst-ever April for hospital overcrowding’ at hospitals across the country. It is understood that 10,229 admitted patients were forced to wait without hospital beds in April 2019 according to a new monthly analysis by the INMO.

Concern over homeless babies Louise McCarthy editor@kildarepost.com

A leading campaigner for homeless people, Fr Peter McVerry, is deeply concerned that there are not enough hubs in Co Kildare to meet the rising levels of homeless families. According to Fr McVerry, the most common age for homelessness in Dublin and Kildare is now from birth to four years old. His concerns are raised the week after a Kildare homeless family approached the offices of TD Séan Ó Fearghaíl. A married couple, in their thirties, are living apart in separate homeless shelters. They have three young children, with a baby living with the mother, in a Kildare location. The other children are now residing with family members. Fr McVerry says that families living separately is now a common occurrence due to increasing levels of homelessness. He said: “There are hundreds of babies now in homeless accommodation.

The situation has been getting very bad for the past seven years. There is a problem with homelessness in Co Kildare. “We need more funding to provide accommodation, we want to provide permanent accommodation, hostels are not the answer.” The first family hub in Kildare was formally opened by Minister for Housing, Eoghan Murphy, in Athy in 2017. The service, which is operated by Peter McVerry Trust in partnership with Kildare County Council, provides short-term emergency accommodation for up to seven homeless families. As the latest release from the Department of Housing shows a further increase in the number of children living in homeless accommodation to 3,821 in March, Barnardos urges the government to ensure that children experiencing the trauma of homelessness have access to a dedicated support worker. Suzanne Connolly, Barnardos CEO said: “At Barnardos we see first-hand the affect living inhomeless accommodation can have on children and families. The

Ombudsman for Children’s report into children living in family hubs published earlier this month echoes what we

see day to day with the families we work with. Amongst the many issues highlighted in the report are

feelings of shame, embarrassment, sadness and anger for the circumstances they are living in. Children

also felt a sense of unfairness as they struggle to understand why they do not have a house to live in.”

Titanic's sister ship, the HMHS Britannic. The luxury liner was constructed in the Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast. The interior was designed by Arthur Durand who assisted on the design of the Eiffel Tower. Lots included a highly rare and exceptional Mahogany bar with copper front, maple paneling and frames from the second class library of the HMHS Britannic. Also on sale was a magnificent First Class Lounge Jacobean-style Oak panelling, identical to that of the Titanic Design. Funds raised for toddler battling leukemia at White Collar Boxingg event A charity event was held at the weekend to raise funds for a local child from Kill who is facing a brave battle with leukemia. Erin Kenna (pictured right), who turned one year old this week, is recovering at home following a bone marrow transplant operation at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin. Family friends Joey Howe and Richard Griffen organised a white collar boxing night at Finnstown Castle Hotel, Lucan, on Saturday night. The participants, aged from 18 to 46, were all aunts, uncles and

friends of Erin’s family. With just eight weeks of training, the standard of the fights was very impressive. A total of over 300 people attended the event which was a great success. Another event this Bank Holiday Monday will feature an auction for two signed jerseys in the Old House, Kill at 8pm. This fundraising amount will be added to the overall total amount and the cheque will also be presented to the parents. Photographs by Diana Maynard and Derek Bennett

Other Side of the Coin

The Dangers of Mobile Phone Masts,Wi Fi, Cordless Phones, Baby Monitors Part 1 So you think everyday appliances that you accept and take for granted in your home are safe? ....well think again! Dangerous Electro Magnetic Fields (EMF’s) are produced today by many items in your home and outside your home. Is your Wi-Fi safe?, is that digital wireless monitor harming your baby? Can you believe that your harmless looking DECT home cordless phone actually pulses out microwaves 24hrs a day even if its not in use? Can they affect the heart? Could they be the cause of some cancers? And could certain members of your family be more susceptible to this form of radiation than others? You will be surprised at the amount of information and scientific data, and controlled tests that point to the fact that Electro Magnetic Fields (EMF’s) produced from Radio Frequencies (RF) especially the Pulsed Microwave variety of your Wi Fi router, Digital Wireless Baby Monitor and Home Cordless Phone may be very damaging to your health. In 2011 The World Health Organisation(WHO)/International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as possibly car-

cinogenic to humans (Group 2B), based on an increased risk for glioma, a malignant type of brain cancer1, associated with wireless phone use. Read here- http://www.iarc.fr/ en/media-centre/pr/2011/pdfs/ pr208_E.pdf I have uncovered some hard hitting facts that everyone should be aware of, and how you can simply and easily protest yourself with a little bit of effort and dilligence.

Baby Monitors

Mobile Phone Masts

A newly published study comparing people living close (within 80 meters) and far (over 300 meters) from a cellular antennas found that the people living closer to the cellular antennas had statistically significant effects- increases in blood damage considered biomarkers predictive of cancer. So if you are living close to a base station, you must object and form community groups and raise awareness to have this health hazard removed. A mobile phone mast should not be in a residential built up area close to where people live. To read the study type into a Google search- “researchgate mobile phone base stations”

Cordless Phones

Most cordless phones and baby monitors used in the

home today are DECT (Digitally Enhanced Cordless Technology). These cordless phones as do baby monitors continuously emit microwave radiation at full power 24 hours a day. Cordless phones emit radiation whether they are being used or just sitting idle in their base station and they pulse out microwaves 24/7, this is actually similar to having a mobile phone mast in your home. This exposes people and babies to unnecessary microwave radiation and has been raised as a potential health concern by scientists and doctors in many countries.

If you have a cordless phone and a baby monitor and a Wi Fi router all running in your home at the same time then your health and the health of your children could be seriously at risk over a period of time. In 2010, Dr. Magda Havas, Ph.D, an electro-smog and electro-sensitivity expert, published results of a groundbreaking study in the European Journal of Oncology. A cordless phone base station was used and demonstrated that wireless EMFs can adversely affect heart function and heart rhythm as well as many other symptoms. To

Most baby monitors are now advertised as using DECT phone technology which runs 2.4 GHz which is the same as the microwave oven frequency. With ‘talk back’ digital baby monitors, where parents can talk back to the baby, both units ccontinuously emit pulsing radiation, not just when the baby is making a noise or the parent is talking to them. Babies and children are more at risk because of their thin and developing brain barriers, Hence, a child’s brain is extremely sensitive to the effects of any type of EMF radiation. Babies are more at risk because of the close proximity of the monitor to the babies head. Parents too because of the close proximity of the monitor reciever to their head at night or during the day. To inform yourself more, please do your own research, just “google” the dangers of cordless phones, baby monitors and wi fi . As well as serious dangers to health, pulsing digital monitors seem to be far more disruptive of the infant's sleep and state of contentment causing restlessness, irritability and crying.

Warnings

So why are there not warnings on these appliances to infom us of these dangers. Simply put: the” industry” driving all wireless technology unto the market has far too much power and money and can influence politicians and governments as well as all the NGO’s and health watchdog organisations. Also as well as that most people take it for granted that wireless technology is safe. Safe levels for microwave radiation whether it comes from a cordless phone, wireless internet router or baby monitor are all based on levels considered safe if they are not high enough to heat you or cook you. The non-thermal biological effects are not considered. There are many studies on the non-thermal effects of microwave radiation on the human body by imminent doctors, professors and scientists. But don’t panic, there are many solutions and next week in Part 2 as well as looking the dangers of Wi Fi use, and we will be looking at solutions and the many ways you can protect your self and your family from the damaging effects of EMF’s in our homes.

The beautiful kitten, who has been named 'Wanda', is the first kitten to be rehomed this year. Her mother was a stray cat who found her way into a nice house and decided to settle and have her kittens in their living room! All went well and the mother has stayed in her new found home, having now been spayed. Wanda and her siblings have all found marvellous forever homes. This is the first year for many years when there are more people looking for kittens than there are kittens available for rehoming. Let’s hope this continues and that the problem of community cats will gradually be reduced. The KWWSPCA rehoming charge for a cat or a kitten is €80 but the cat will have been neutered (if old enough), vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and treated for fleas and it covers the cost of future neutering when a kitten is old enough.

Antoinette Buckley - Election Candidate

BUILDING COMMUNITIES - MAKNG A DIFFERENCE

Local Election Candidate for the Newbridge Municipal District covering Newbridge, Kilcullen, Old Kilcullen, Brannockstown, Gilltown, Two Mile House, Carnalway, Ladytown, Clongorey and Caragh Antoinette Buckley (formerly Prendergast from Newbridge ) is a strong community activist in her local area, involved with several voluntary groups and has lead many local initiatives all aimed at bringing about improvements in the town. She is involved with Tidy Towns, KCA, Twinning Group, Kilcullen 700 events, Co-Founder of the Christmas and Easter Markets. Antinette has lead large initiatives, Market Square Redevelopment Project Kilcullen that received €200,000 in collaboration with KCC from the Town and Village Renewal Scheme Grant late 2018 and is now at Part 8 Planning stage ready for a formal Public Consultation . Her more

recent initiative she spearheaded through KCA was the launch of the very successful “The Valley Fairy Trail” which is an invaluable initiative for families and businesses , visitors, and helps the local economy. Antoinette secured LPT and National funding and raised funds for several local projects as a volunteer. Without our voluntary groups, CE Scheme workers, our towns and villages would be at a huge disadvantage, they are the heart and soul of every community . If elected she will continue to support the aims of our voluntary groups, clubs to further their goals. Antoinette said she is passionate about building communities and making a difference. If every town make changes to better their local area, it would make a huge difference in their community, for families, businesses and residents . Out on the canvas trail Antoinette remarked on the issues presented to her, most

Our Government need to action and deliver a plan to

make changes to protect our environment for future generations. Infrastructure and traffic congestion is a big problem in many areas due to the large volume of building works and development, insufficient infrastructure to deal with traffic congestion. Antoinette said that the urgent need for affordable housing , social housing, rentals is endemic. Families moved back in with their parents in crowded

conditions is shocking. Long hospital waiting lists, and very poor mental health support and huge delays in A&E seems to be an ongoing issue for many years now. The dramatic increase in commercial rates is crippling SME’s , these independent businesses are the backbone of our local economy, but they are being damaged by unexpected and massive increases in their rates with little warning.

Antoinette is progressive and forward thinking, hardworking and has proven that she can deliver. If elected on May 24 , Antoinette will certainly continue to work hard and strive to deliver on all issues presented to her. She said ”I won’t make false promises , but I will promise to work hard for the Newbridge Municipal District Area. Please Vote 1 for a” Strong Local Voice” , Vote Antoinette Buckley.

Girls invited to give rugby a try with Newbridge RFC summer programme Girls with an interest in trying the game of rugby are being invited to take part in a successful Give It A Try summer programme, now in its second year at Newbridge Rugby Club. Last year, some 48 girls registered and played rugby for eight weeks, taking part in several Leinster blitzes and finishing up at the All-Ireland festival in August. This year the programme will be run in both Kilcullen and at the club’s home pitch at Rosetown, near Athgarvan, as Newbridge RFC has strong links with both areas. Girls are invited to take part in the programme at the Scoil Bhride Primary School Pitch, on Monday evenings from 6pm to 7.15pm, starting on Monday, May 13. It will also be held at Newbridge Rugby Club on Wednesday evenings from 6.30pmto7.45pm,startingon May 8. Girls can attend one or other night — or both if they wish to get a really good grasp of the game. However, girls

Confidence and skills

Newbridge Rugby Club's U12 girls team represented Leinster at the invitational Aviva Minis inter-provincial tournament at Carton House last year. Picture: Gerard Miller who also are unable to attend the full eight weeks due to holidays or other commitments are welcome to take part as much as they

can. Give It A Try costs just €10 per participant and this can be paid on the first evening at registration. “The programme is

designed to introduce the game of rugby to girls age 10 to 14 in a safe and fun way,” said Sarah Murphy, one of the organisers.

“Rugby is an all inclusive sport and can be picked up very quickly regardless of sporting background or ability.

“Our hope is that girls who complete the eight-week programme will finish up full of confidence, with a new set of skills and that they will consider rugby as a sport for them. “They will be invited to join some open practice sessions in the club in August and maybe then they might consider joining one of our teams,” added Paul Treacey, who heads up the girls rugby section at Newbridge RFC. Newbridge Rugby Club, currently fields U10 and U12 girls mini rugby teams and an U14 girls youth team. In September the club will start a new girls U16 team. If interested, contact Paul Treacey 086 2624073 /Sarah Murphy 086 3379772 or just turn up at the Rugby Club on May 8 at 6.30pm or at Scoil Bhride on May 13 at 6pm.

barrage of bold colours and prints, utilitarian vibes and electric snakeskin prints – Penney’s high summer womenswear collection is full of fun, playful looks - no matter what the destination is. Comprised of three different trends, key pieces include crochet jumpsuits, tie dye satin dresses and metallic bikinis that will let you leave your mark and keep you looking holiday ready, all summer long!

‘Desert Traveller’ sets the tone for summer, landing in stores at the end of April. The colour palette consists of soft beiges, rich terracotta, chocolate browns and khaki greens giving a modern twist on the utilitarian look. Statement pieces include paisley print chiffon kaftans, fringed crochet dress, rope detail belts and laundered neutral stripes that create a relaxed, urban gypsy look for warm evenings.

A collision of flamboyant colours and tie-dye amplifies the ‘Point Break’ trend. Bleached denim jeans, hyper-floral kaftans and psychedelic crochet pieces steal the limelight as the intoxicating 90’s print makes a comeback. Fabrics are cool and lightweight which is essential for the season ahead. Key colours in the collection are burnt orange, mustard and cobalt blue, combining to create a fun look with a twist – note, launching in store at the end of May.

Y2K is full of 90’s satin, mesh detail, cargo pockets and electric snake print. The bold and graphic neon yellow, lime greens and reds are supported by muted tones of subtle oranges and browns. Fringed kimonos, all-over sequined swimsuits and neon shades exude youthful and expressive vibes for summer. PENNEYS (PRIMARK) is an international brand that offers high quality fashion,

Niamh Gaynor of Neeba Hair & Beauty shares her Hair Heroic Tips Protect your luscious locks this summer with Neeba Hair & Beauty. Neeba Hair & Beauty in Newbridge is the perfect place to update your hair to the hottest summer trends. The talented team want to help you make your hair ‘season appropriate’ with sun-kissed highlights, beach bohemian waves and for the girls worrying about their darker hair looking dull this summer, Neeba Hair & Beauty can brighten it up with a subtle balayage, or natural looking highlights. The summer sun also brings with it a personal responsibility to protect your hair from the heat, chlorine and intense UV rays. If you are planning on jetting off to the sun to show off your new luscious locks, Niamh Gaynor of Neeba Hair & Beauty has put together a must follow list to protect your precious crown from damage this summer: 1. Avoid using too many products Hair, like our skin, can suffer in extremities of heat

Barbara Lumsden and Niamh Gaynor, Neeba

and d cold. ld The h sunshine dries out your hair enormously and causes split ends to appear in abundance. It is important to go easy on chemical hair treatments during the summer period to not add to your hairs already dryer, summer condition. If you are planning on changing your hair colour this summer, try and schedule your appointment a few weeks before the sun hits and make sure you use salon products at home to shampoo and

condition your tresses. 2. Moisturise and Condition While the sun is drying out your locks, it is important to restore some moisture and life by using a rinse-out conditioner.Itisimportantto get one that suits your hair type and texture. If you are

going for a swim in the sea or pool remember to put a leave-in conditioner on your hair and wear a swimming cap. 3. Use a heat protector when using styling tools. If you are using heated stylist tools always use a heat protection spray.

4. Hydrate Drinking more water is not only good for obtaining healthy looking skin, it also helps to hydrate your scalp and hair. In addition to drinking 2-3 litres of water a day, make sure that you are eating delicious healthy foods that are boosting your hair’s health and growth like eggs, fish and sweet potatoes! 5. Use a silk pillowcase Cotton pillowcases are absorbent and can draw

moisture out of your hair and skin while you’re sleeping. Silk on the other hand leaves your hair silky smooth. As a bonus, silk pillowcases also reduce knots and extends the life of your blow dry. Neeba Hair & Beauty offers an unrivalled grooming experience. The stylists at Neeba are highly trained, creative individuals who continually strive for the highest possible standards in hair and beauty. Their mission is to remain fresh, current and to keep on top of the latest techniques in hair, nails and beauty so our discerning clients always get the attention and service they deserve. Open seven days a week and conveniently located at Whitewater Shopping Centre, on Cutlery Road, Newbridge, Neeba also offer a walk-in service, but booking is advised for the busy summer period. Massive more accommodation in dining and socialising capacity at new development With over €65m spent at the Curragh Racecourse in the past two years, visitors to the venue in recent weeks have stated the scale and increased capacity of the new development needs to be experienced to fully appreciate the massive development. With our unpredictable Irish weather, let's face it, we spend a fair bit of time racing for cover, instead of enjoying

the spectacular views and racing at the Curragh. Now the 10,500 square metre stand can cater for up to 6,000 people inside its four levels while its surrounds can cater for over 10,000 additional race-goers! The stand’s sweeping 7,000 square metre roof is the most arresting feature of the new facility with the materials for the new grandstand chosen for their links to local flora,

geology and the rural context in which they are set. Notably, the Parade Ring has been expanded to over 180 sq mts with a theoretical six mts per horse. The Queen's Room. A landmark at the Curragh ‘The Queen’s Room’ has been restored to its former glory and relocated as a standalone feature close to the parade ring having been moved and reassembled brick by brick

Throws and Cushions from JYSK

With lots of excitement surrounding the launch of Danish Interiors store JYSK opening its first Irish Interiors store in Naas, I was eager to visit the store and share with you some of my findings. Firstly, I liked that the store was not too large, and it was very easy to navigate without being overwhelmed by its size. The store had a large range of furniture for the dining room, living room, home office and bedroom as well plenty of outdoor furniture. Secondly, everything was extremely well priced and there are lots of special introductory offers with oil cloths from as little as €2.00 a metre and placemats from only €1.00 each making it ideal for those who are working with a tight budget. Global home retail brand JYSK plan to open 15 stores across Ireland in the next two years. Its Scandinavian inspired style makes it a well loved brand around the world with 2,700 stores worldwide. Originally founded in 1979 by Lars Larsen in Denmark, the company have seen massive growth and now employ 23,000 people world wide.

Loft Cabin Bed from €269 They have a range of products to suit all budgets from low, mid to high. I’ve included some pictures here of my favourite items. On display were beautiful Scandinavian inspired coffee tables and side tables, TV

units, sofas, armchairs plus a range of rugs, throws and scatter cushions to complete your contemporary or Scandinavian inspired living room. For the dining room there is a wide range of dining room

them and have been working on a new project to do this. I love when plans come together and this one really looks like it is, can’t wait to share possibly next week. Our shiny new website was finally ready too and I am so delighted with how it looks, that was the last piece of the jigsaw in our re-brand so now I’m busy populating it with all the new stock that came in, I might be here a while. When I look at lots of the stock it is amazing the shapes and styles that we are able to have in trees and specimens that I have had to find ways of showing it to people, its grand for all you Kildare people who can come and see them for yourselves but showing them to the rest of the country is the challenge, any way that means that you guys always get to see them first. So this week is Punchestown week, a great week in the Naas and surrounding area social calendar so best of luck to all taking part and hope all those attending have the best time, you will see some of our lovely shaped trees as part of the Bollinger tent, for those posh enough to venture over to that side, have a glass for us too! New Audi TT now available in Ireland

59

By Breda Corrigan Member of Irish Motoring Writers’ Association (IMWA)

For 20 years, the Audi TT has been synonymous with driving pleasure – and with this comprehensive update, Audi has honed the sporty character of the third-generation model. Enhancements to exterior design, power upgrades and an equipment uplift make the case for the compact sports car even more compelling. Cutting-Edge Engine Line-Up Audi now offers two more powerful direct-injection gasoline engines for the new TT: The entry 197 hp badged the 40 TFSI and 245 hp badged the 45 TFSI. The engines also have a gasoline particulate filter. With the new seven-gear S tronic, the lower gears now have a shorter ratio for better driving dynamics. With the 40 TFSI the TT Coupé sprints from 0 to 100 km in 6.6 seconds, while the 45 TFSI does it in just 5.9 seconds. For the more powerful engine, Audi offers the option of either manual front wheel drive, or quattro all-wheel drive with a 7 speed S tronic gearbox, for even better traction and driving dynamics. Sharper Styling The exterior design of the new TT is now more progressive and sharper. The Singleframe radiator grille is highly sculpted, with large side air intakes emphasising the car’s firm hold on the road. At the rear, horizontal

lines also underscore the width of the compact sports car. The new Audi TT comes with LED headlights as standard, and as an option Audi can supply the headlights in Matrix LED technology including dynamic turn signals. The standard S line exterior package particularly highlights the sporty character of the Audi TT with striking details on the front, side sills and rear. It is complemented by the standard S line interior

package with the S sport seats. Two vibrant new colours have been added to the range of paint finishes: pulse orange and turbo blue. Audi Drive Select The new Audi TT is equipped with the Audi drive select driving dynamics system. The driver can control all infotainment and voice control functions via the multifunction steering wheel. The displays appear in the Audi virtual cockpit, where the driver can choose between two different views.

In all versions, devices such as smartphones can be connected via an illuminated USB socket and by Bluetooth. On Sale Now

The all new Audi TT is available to order now. The prices for the TT Coupé start from €49,850 on the road, while the TT Roadster is

available from €61,100 on the road. Contact Sheehy's Audi Naas, Newbridge Road, Jigginstown, Naas, phone (045) 906 66 – Breda.

Kildare lose out in ten goal thriller Wexford Kildare

6-11 4-12

LGFA U16B SF: Kildare v Wexford By Donal Fitzpatrick, LGFA Kildare PRO Kildare welcomed Wexford to Castlemitchel GAA for the first of this weekends' Leinster B semi finals. The game turned out to be a very entertaining contest with non stop action and goals galore. Both keepers are to be commended for some outstanding net minding throughout the game and despite 10 goals in total being scored on the day, there could have been a lot more only for their valuable contribution to their respective teams! Kildare led at the midway

point of the half 2.03 to.0.03 Eimear Hanlon and Hayley Wiltshire with the Kildare goals. Wexford's keeper denied Kildare another goal producing a double safe pushing the second shot around the post for a 45. Wexford brought themselfs back into the game with another point and a fortunate goal with Leah Ormands strike deceiving Fiadh Whitely to hit corner of the net. Whitely was called into action again denying Aoife Cullen in a one on one situation. Kildare responded with 1.01 Eimear Hanlon netting her second goal of the half. Kildare could have had another goal, Zoe Brierty and Niamh Mortell linking up with a one two but net minder O' Reilly was quick to react saving with her feet from Mortells shot. Wexford finished the half strong with substitute Aoife Cullen adding 1-1 leaving the visitors trail by 2 points at the break. Half time: Kildare Wexford 2-5.

3-4

Wexford started the second half as they finished the first with Aoife Cullen raising the green flag for her second goal, pushing her side into the lead for the first time. Kildare tagged on another point followed with Haley Wiltshire popping up with 1.01 giving the home side some breathing space. That lead was quickly cancelled as Wexford

responded with two quick fire goals, Cullen with her third and hattrick followed with Megan Dee making no mistake from close range. Kildare tagged on three points in succession without reply reducing the deficit. Wexford now hit a purple patch and went on a scoring spree keeping the umpires busy with a goal and five points Wexfords sixth goal courtesy of substitute Katie Breen. Both sides traded points again and with the game now in injury time Wexford stood firm as Kildare tagged on two more points to leave the full time score

Kildare 4-12 Wexford 6-11 Kildare's season draws to a close now with that defeat and Wexford advance to play either Offaly or Longford in the B final next month. Referee (Dublin)

League form holds up as Eadestown see off Clane Clane

2-9

Senior Football Championship By Robert Cribbin Lightning struck again as Eadestown overcame Clane for the second successive weekend in the Senior Football Championship at the weekend. Pat O’Sullivan kicked in a 19th minute goal for the winners and they were never really threatened from that point onwards despite the best efforts of Shane O’Sullivan. For many onlookers the loss

of Emmet Bolton would have dented Eadestown but they showed no signs of in an impressive victory. Clane on the other hand may have got a preview of what life might be like without Brian McLoughlin over the coming season and they will need to make major improvements if they want to starve off another relegation battle. After Conor McCarthy missed a seemingly easy free for Eadestown, Clane kicked the opening two points with Shane O’Sullivan and Danny Egan knocking over efforts from play before they were cancelled out by Cian Bolton. O’Sullivan was Clane’s lone shining light and himself and Egan added to their tallies to put Sean O’Dea’s men 0-4 to

0-1 clear but Eadestown bit back with 1-4 in the space of ten minutes. Bolton kicked three excellent points before Pat O’Sullivan rifled in a goal to give his side the lead for the first time. Eoin Cummins had a storming game at centre back and he kicked an exquisite effort off his left foot that rounded off their dominant period. O’Sullivan then had a shot well saved by Niall Quinn’s son Mikey in the Eadestown goal but Chris Byrne pointed soon afterwards to leave just three between them. Eadestown finished off the half ’s scoring however as Bolton kicked his fifth point of the half to give his team a 1-6 to 0-5 lead at the halfway

mark. Clane looked in trouble but an O’Sullivan goal immediately on the restart gave them some hope. Again though Eadestown stayed calm and composed with three points in a row from Johnny Deane, Ronan Slattery and Eoin Woods. Two Clane subs in Cathal Geoghegan and Bernard Deay got in on the act but Eadestown were still one step ahead with scores from Deane and Bolton keeping the four point deficit. That lead was soon doubled as Eadestown all but ended the game as a contest with scores from McCarthy, Bolton and the ultimate salt in the wound with a 45 from Mikey Quinn. Eoin Woods had a goal chance narrowly go wide

aswell but it was the team in white who got the late three pointer with O’Sullivan converting a penalty after Sam McCormack was brought down in the square. Clane’s frustration then got the better of them with Jake Devey getting sent off on a second yellow card and although O’Sullivan added on two late frees it was all too late as Eadestown won out on a 1-15 to 2-9 scoreline. Eadestown: Mikey Quinn 0-1 (0-1 45); John Slattery, Eddie Conroy, Adam Fitzsimons, Ronan Slattery 0-1, Eoin Cummins 0-1, Barry Lawler, Rian Boran, Pat O’Sullivan 1-0, Eoin Woods 0-1, Johnny Deane 0-2, Padraic Tuohy, Cian Bolton

Celbridge stave off Maynooth comeback to claim victory Celbridge Maynooth

0-13 0-11

Senior Football Championship Rd 1 By Robert Cribbin Celbridge will be regarded as one of the favourites to claim senior honours and they got their SF campaign off to the perfect start with a workmanlike victory over Maynooth on Saturday afternoon. Celbridge will be wondering how the game ended up so close though as they let Maynooth back into the game after leading by 12 points at one stage! Heavily backboned by their Kildare contingent, the Hazelhatch Road side looked all over the winners but when they seemingly thought the

game was up they sat back and Maynooth very nearly caught them in the end. Maynooth remarkably kicked ten points in a row in the second half with Neil Flynn getting five of them but they gave themselves too much to do. Paddy Brophy looked like he is on the verge of a return to form after scoring five points and he was the lead marksman in the Celbridge attack but one major worry for both Paul Curran and Kildare manager Cian O’Neill was the sight of Kevin Flynn hobbling off injured. Celbridge kicked the opening two scores with the experienced Mark O’Sullivan finding the target on the back of an effort from David Hughes. Maynooth replied with a point from Danny O’Sullivan but remarkably

that was their last score of the half with Celbridge taking complete control. Paul Curran’s team did have the aid of the breeze but even still their forward unit were moving very well. Hughes and Paddy Brophy moved the lead out to three points by the 10th minute while Mark Donnellan did well to stop a goalbound effort from his county teammate Tony Archbold. Five more points soon followed before Maynooth even looked a threat with a brace of scores from Brophy and a point each from Archbold, Hughes and David Byrne giving the Blues a 0-9 to 0-1 lead. Maynooth had a great goal chance in the 27th minute when an attempt at a point from O’Sullivan dropped short but Neil Flynn was there and he was out of

luck as he palmed a shot off the crossbar. The scoring didn’t stop though with Celbridge kicking the last two points of the half as Brophy and Hughes split the posts to give them a seemingly unassailable 0-11 to 0-1 advantage at the break. The onslaught showed no sign of letting up in the early minutes of the second period either with two quickfire points as Shane McNamara landed a long range free before Brophy got another effort from play. Brophy’s point arrived in the 35th minute but Celbridge must have thought the game was up as they missed a host of chances for the rest of the game and allowed their near neighbours back into the contest. Kevin Dunne got the Maynooth ball rolling in the

Murphy the key man as Castledermot open with victory over Raheens Castledermot Raheens

1-12 1-6

Senior Football Championship Rd 1 By Robert Cribbin Aaron Murphy helped himself to 1-6 as Castledermot got the better of Raheens in the opening round of the Senior Football Championship. It was a supremely efficient performance from Castledermot who always looked a bigger threat with Murphy in particularly causing harm to Raheens. It was in the second half where they really took control as the wind and Murphy’s 51st minute goal really helped them push clear on the scoreboard. On the other hand it was a disappointing display by Raheens and they found real trouble in finding any way by the stubborn Castledermot defence with the only positive being Liam Power notching 1-2 from play. It was a game that was always going to be tough to predict and the first half only proved that in a competitive affair. Castledermot began well

with points from Aaron Murphy and David Keating giving the South Kildare outfit an early advantage as they made little of the wind they were playing against. Liam Power got Raheens on the board in the 6th minute with an effort from distance but Noel Mooney’s side never really found their groove throughout the half. Both teams are competing well in Div 2 of the Senior Football League but Castledermot made all the early running and they were soon three points clear when Murphy and Paddy Whelan added on points. Raheens had a glorious chance for goal in the 9th minute when a long range effort from Paddy Woodgate was brilliantly caught inside the square by Mark Waters but the full forward could only pull his shot wide of the goal. Waters’s miss didn’t overly affect the men in Saffron and Blue though with consecutive points from Woodgate and Mikey McGovern narrowing the deficit to just a point. The Castledermot response was good though with half back David Dooley kicking over before Emmet O’Keefe narrowly shot wide. With that wide came torrential rain and the

referee picked the right time to blow for half-time as Castledermot went in with a 0-5 to 0-3 lead after a real stop start half. If things never got going in the first period it was something very similar after the break although Castledermot did make much better use of the wind at their backs. Mikey McGovern and Emmet O’Keefe exchanged points before an effort from Murphy who was causing real chaos in the Raheens rearguard left Castledermot with a three point lead. What followed was an incredibly scrappy period of football with nobody really taking control until David Keating split the posts in the 46th minute. That point came on the back of a narrow miss from Anthony Lawlor and Castledermot grew in stature with 1-4 on the bounce as Murphy, Keating and Paddy Whelan added on points before the game was practically put to bed when Murphy curled a beautiful shot past Declan Campbell in the Raheens goal. To their credit Raheens hit back with a goal from Liam Power and a point from McGovern in quick succession but the rally came much too late as Castledermot held out.

38th minute with a point and he nearly had a goal a few minutes later but his shot went into the side netting. That didn’t stop Maynooth’s momentum though with a point from distance by Ruadhan O’Giollainn narrowing the lead further before Neil Flynn kicked four consecutive frees. Maynooth were six points down as a result but their resurrection kept coming with points from Flynn, O’Giollain and Sean Higgins getting them within two but the goal they needed never came as Celbridge held out. The Bridge edge out arch rivals, Carbury in incident-packed local derby Johnstownbridge Carbury

0-13 1-7

Senior Football Championship Round By Robert Cribbin Sam Doran’s well worked 22nd minute goal was the difference as Johnstownbridge overcame Carbury in an eventful game that rounded off the opening weekend of the Club Championship at St Conleths Park. Johnstownbridge came into the game on the back of an up and down league but they were at it from the get go here in an efficient performance. Carbury looked to have the edge with both Paul Cribbin and Sean Hurley missing out for the Bridge but the side on the edge of the Meath border had others show their worth including Sam Doran who nabbed 1-3 while the Flynn brothers especially Luke caused plenty of damage. It’s long been known that a lot of what Carbury do depends on Eoghan O’Flaherty but for the second time in three years, his shadow Keith Cribbin kept him out of the game as he shut him down with O’Flaherty failing to score from play. The game was far from dirty but even still there were three red and four black cards given out throughout but it has to be said referee Billy O’Connell kept a good handle on proceedings as he let the game flow a lot even if things got a bit fractured late on. Johnstownbridge got the scoring underway with a Sam Doran point in the 2ndminute before Carbury hit three on the bounce with O’Flaherty from a free and James Kelly and Jack Cully from play that gave them a 0-3 to 0-1 advantage. Carbury then didn’t score in the following ten minutes as Brian Flanagan’s well drilled outfit retook the lead with points from Doran, Luke Flynn and Kelvin McNally. The sides interchanged efforts with points for

Carbury from Kelly and O’Flaherty being cancelled out by Doran and Daniel Flynn. Carbury had a chance for goal in the 21st minute when an airborne effort from James Kelly landed in the vicinity of Derek McCormack and his palmed attempt was saved by Padraig Hurley. Johnstownbridge took full advantage of that miss as less than thirty seconds later the ball was in the Carbury net when Daniel Flynn brilliantly manoeuvred himself into space before Sam Doran got by a quartet of players and finished past Aaron O’Neill in the Carbury goal. Dan Flynn could have got another goal moments later but he shot wide before Cribbin and O’Flaherty got free of each other’s grasps to share points that left Johnstown with a 1-7 to 0-6 interval lead. Carbury had a goal chance from James Carey saved upon the resumption before Stephen McGlynn got a black card for a cynical trip on Seamus McNally. Johnstownbridge took control with both Flynns Great defensive play by Joey Higgins to break up a Carbury assault pointing before Kelvin McNally kicked his second free of the game. Carbury then lost Brian O’Flaherty to a black card but points from Eoghan O’Flaherty and Brian Milmoe kept them in touch. Both duly knocked on points with Cathal McNally impressing off the bench with a brace before O’Flaherty and James and David Kelly responded for Carbury. Johnstownbridge still had a five point lead entering the final The progress towards goal of Carbury's Derek McCormack few minutes but comes to an unceremonious halt with this crunching tackle from the loss of both JTB's Seamus McNally. Yellow card issued Keith Cribbin was worry in the winner’s and Eoin bookable offence. 'Mercurial Mulhall' back on form as Athy edge out Sarsfields Athy Sarsfields

1-13 0-14

Senior Football Championship, Rd 1 By Robert Cribbin Athy and Sarsfields played out a cracking Senior Football Championship game with the South Kildare outfit narrowly getting the win. It was by far the most competitive game of the weekend and with the most quality but Athy’s extra cutting edge got them over the line. Darroch Mulhall finished with 1-3 for Athy and his opening minute goal separated the sides come the end but it was so avoidable after Cian Scanlon gave the ball away carelessly in defence. This was like the Mulhall of a couple of years ago when he was on the Kildare panel but unfortunately for him he had to go off late on with a hamstring injury. Sarsfields never led with Mulhall’s goal always giving Athy the advantage but the Sash still played their part in an intriguing contest with Barry Coffey, Darragh Ryan and the Hartley brothers all impressing.

The Athy management couldn’t have dreamt of a better start with Darroch Mulhall firing in a goal in the opening minute on the back of a mistake in the Sarsfields defence. Sarsfields responded with points from Darragh Ryan and Karl Hartley who was an early sub for the injured Cian Costigan. Athy then maintained their three point lead with an outside of the boot effort from Mulhall coming on the back of a free from Liam McGovern. Barry Coffey had an excellent opening period for the Sash and he brilliantly found Conor Hartley over the top in the 18th minute but Hartley had to settle for a point. Mulhall replied with a lovely effort on the turn before consecutive scores from Coffey off either foot left just the minimum between the sides. Athy finished the half well though as James Eaton kicked a couple of great scores either side of Mulhall and McGovern getting points. The Sash were very much still in contention come the interval though as Coffey and Hartley scored to leave just three points between the sides. The three point deficit became just one in the opening minutes of

the second half with Brian McDonnell and Karl Hartley on target in as many minutes. A McGovern point after a great initial field from Kevin Feely steadied the Athy ship and although Con Kavanagh and Ryan kicked points in response, last year’s League champions pushed on again. Cian Reynolds kicked his first point after Eaton and McGovern extended their tallies but the best was still to come as Mulhall kicked an outrageous point on the sideline after he turned his marker inside out. It was around this stage that saw Niall Kelly and Ben McCormack both make their competitive return to action. Kelly was back from a four month trip abroad as he filled in for the injured Mulhall on the Athy side while McCormack in quicker fashion than expected overcame a broken thumb to enter the field which will have no doubt pleased the onlooking Kildare manager Cian O’Neill. The contest could have had a grandstand finish when Declan McKenna caught a long ball from Ray Cahill but his shot was expertly pushed round the post by Matthew Anderson. McGovern with his fifth point duly put Athy 1-13 to 0-11 clear in the 52nd minute but no team of Davy Burke throws in the towel and although Brian McDonnell got a black

card, a pair of frees from Ray Cahill and a score from play by newly announced Kildare Under 20 captain Darragh Ryan had Sarsfields within touching distance but the clock beat them this time as Athy won out on a 1-13 to 0-14 scoreline. Athy: Matthew Anderson; John Moran, Mark Hyland, Killian Mulhall, David Hyland, Cathal McCarron, Ross Bell, Michael Foley, Kevin Feely, Liam McGovern 0-5 (0-3fs), Tony Gibbons, Barry Kelly, Cian Reynolds 0-2, Darroch Mulhall 1-3, James Eaton 0-3 (0-2fs). Routine victory for Moores over Naas in opening game of Senior Championship By Robert Cribbin

Moorefield Naas

1-11 0-7

Senior Football Championship Round It was billed as one of the ties of the round but nothing remotely close to that ever transpired as Moorefield easily got the better of Naas in St Conleths Park last weekend. The game which was a repeat of last year’s semi-final went along similar lines to that game with Moorefield always in control. Eanna O’Cononor top scored for the victors with 1-7 and alongside Adam Tyrrell and Ciaran Kelly he was a constant threat. Niall Cronin was in his first Championship game as Naas manager and he was hampered with the loss of Eoin Doyle to a hamstring injury and his absence was keenly felt in the end. Moorefield had a huge wind behind them in the first half as the backend of Storm Hannah took its toll and they took early control with Eanna O’Connor knocking over a free after Jason Phillips had originally being fouled. Adam Tyrrell quickly followed up

with an effort from play and the defending County Champions were well clear by the 6th minute where Tyrrell found Ciaran Kelly in space and while Kelly’s effort was well saved by Barry Reynolds, Eanna O’Connor was there to pounce on the rebound and find the net. The onslaught didn’t end there with Ross Glavin’s side keeping Naas to just a point for the entire half as the Newbridge team duly added on 1-9 without reply at a stage in a dominant performance. O’Connor kicked his second free of the half to make it 1-3 to 0-0 in the 7th minute and with himself and Tyrrell holding a monopoly on the Moorefield scoring during the opening stanza it was looking all too easy. Tyrrell added a free himself moments later before O’Connor took full control over the game with five in a row - courtesy of three 45s, a point from play and a score from a free to give the Moores a twelve point lead. Naas responded when a shot from Darragh Kirwan dropped in the square and while John Joyce got a flick on it the Moorefield stopper Ian McDonnell did enough to keep it out. Kirwan then eventually got Naas on the scoreboard in the 29th minute with a lovely

Moorefield's Eanna O'Connor and James Murray quickly surround the fallen Paul Sullivan (Naas). effort but it still left Naas with plenty to do as they went into the break trailing 1-9 to 0-1. Naas put up an original spurt at the beginning of the second half with the aid of the elements with three points in a row as sub James Burke, Brian Stynes and Eamonn Callaghan all found the target. Moorefield hit back with a nice score from James Murray in the 42nd minute after a patient move and that point seemed to settle things down for the victors and they

were never in any real trouble from that point onwards. Naas needed goals and while Anthony Durney blocked well from James Buke it was the only real threat on Ian McDonnell’s goal. The teams did interchange scores halfway through the half when Callaghan and Evan O’Brien shared points but overall the second half was rather forgetful. Naas rounded off the scoring with points from David Shaw and Dallan Gallagher late on but it only put a bit of respect on the scoreboard as Moorefield cruised to victory. Moorefield: Ian McDonnell; Sean Dempsey, Liam Healy, Mark Dempsey, Kevin Murnaghan, Sean Healy, James Murray 0-1, Aaron Masterson, Adam Sweeney, Eanna O’Connor 1-7 (0-3 45, 0-2fs), Ciaran Kelly, Anthony Durney, Adam Tyrrell 0-2 (0-1f ), Jason Phillips, Mark McDermott. Early Grade One success at Punchestown for Gordon Elliot Delta Work capped a strong finish to Day One of Punchestown for Gordon Elliott as he eased to victory in the Grade 1 Dooley Insurance Group Champion Novice Chase. The Gigginstown House Stud-owned six-year-old lost his unbeaten record over fences when third in the RSA at Cheltenham but he ended his season a high under Davy Russell. The 13/8 favourite cruised through the race and was still on the bridle as he eased away from the field facing up to the last two fences. Delta Work finished a dozen lengths ahead of Discorama with third going to the Cheltenham winner A Plus Tard. “We were disappointed in Cheltenham that he got beaten but today was his day and Davy gave him a great ride. I’d say the softer ground made the difference,” stated Elliott. “It’s great to get a

couple of winners on the board this early in the week and this horse is one to look forward to for next year. I’ll speak to Michael and Eddie (O’Leary) but I would imagine we will try and go down the Gold Cup route,” added the trainer. Earlier Elliott won the Goffs Land Rover Bumper for the third time as the €30,000 purchase Festival D’ex began his career in the best possible fashion. Top amateur Jamie Codd sent this four-year-old to the front with over a furlong to run and Festival D’ex ran right away from his rivals to win by ten lengths. “It’s great for John (Doyle, owner), he is a great supporter of the yard. He is into all the marts and is more known for the cattle, but he has invested a lot of money in horses. Bobby O’Ryan advises him on what to buy and what not to buy and this is his local track. This is a very nice horse for the future,” said Elliott.

Pearl Of The West gave locally born trainer John McConnell his first winner at this fixture in the Killashee Handicap Hurdle where she was partnered by Robbie Power. The 12/1 chance defeated Cosmo’s Moon to record the seventh victory of her career and her biggest success to date. “She’s just such a good jumper, hurdles make a big difference to her. I was worried about the ground with the rain that fell this morning but it was fine for her and the race worked out really for her. I suppose we’ll have to consider looking at some big handicap hurdles in the future,” said McConnell. As he has done on so many occasions in the past Enda Bolger supplied the opening winner of the week but not in the order expected as the Ray Barron-ridden Blue Templar upstaged his odds on stablemate Youcannotbeserious in the

Kildare Hunt Club Fr Sean Breen Memorial Chase For The Ladies Perpetual Cup. The first two home are owned by J.P. McManus. “The second is probably a classier horse but Blue Templar’s experience here probably swung it for him. We’ll have to see how he comes out of this but I’d say the winner might be back here for the La Touche Cup on Thursday,” commented Bolger. Meanwhile the winning rider added: “It was brilliant, he lights up over the banks. You couldn’t be riding over them for a better fella in Enda (Bolger), so it makes my job a lot easier, and it’s also great to ride a winner for Mr McManus. I have had a couple of go’s around here but it’s great to get a bit of luck, it means a lot to me. This is where you want winners, it is the highlight of the year and it is great to get it here now”. Front View rounded off the day’s action in the Sanctuary Synthetics Flat Race where he provided J P McManus with his second winner of the day. The Joseph O’Brien-trained and Derek O’Connor-ridden grey battled on bravely for the last furlong to defeat Jungle Junction by a length. The attendance on day one of the Punchestown Festival was 17,464. Racing returns on Wednesday where the Coral Punchestown Gold Cup is the feature on an eight race card which begins at 3.40pm. Un De Sceaux lights up Punchestown with back to back Champion Chase wins The brilliant Un De Sceaux lit up the opening day of the Punchestown Festival with a typically brilliant display that saw him make it back to back victories in the Grade 1 BoyleSports Champion Chase. The hugely popular eleven-year-old looked to have his work cut against his stablemate Min but he produced a thrilling display to notch up a fourth victory at this meeting. The Edward O’Connell-owned gelding did battle with Min for much of the race but that one had no answer when Paul Townend and Un De Sceaux moved on after the third last fence. The crowd favourite turned for home with a useful lead and once he cleared the last the stage was set for the eleven-year-old to record another great success. Un De Sceaux defeated Min by four lengths and there was a further 38 lengths back to third-placed Castlegrace Paddy. “It was some adrenaline rush, he was brave as a lion. I asked him plenty of questions, the fuel tank was running low coming to the last and after asking a horse so many times, probably the wrong thing to do is the opposite to what you have been doing, but he figured it out himself,” said Paul Townend. “What a warrior. He is a horse of a lifetime. The way he races, to keep coming out and putting in performances like that – I was actually a bit worried when I got to the start, because he was a bit dead in himself doing the parade but once we lined up he came alive under me. That was some buzz,” added the

rider. Equally thrilled was Willie Mullins who stated: “He’s a great favourite and I thought that was just an incredible performance from an eleven-year-old to do that in a race like that. He’s a horse with incredible energy and he’s like that every morning, I just don’t know how he does it”.

“Paul said he was a passenger for three quarters of the way and that’s just a great feeling for a jockey to have. I thought that the ground was against Un De Sceaux but he came here a fresh horse and that’s helped him. Min was possibly a little flat after Aintree but maybe at this stage of his career he wants an extra half mile too.”

The first of the week’s Grade 1s, the Herald Champion Novice Hurdle, went to the irresistible duo of Willie Mullins and Ruby Walsh as Klassical Dream followed up last month’s victory at Cheltenham. favourite took over the lead from the pace setting Felix Desjy before the straight and went on to record an

impressive five and a half length success. Ruby Walsh, who was winning this race for the fifth time, commented: “He was quite hot in the preliminaries and I left the ear plugs in today. I took them out in Cheltenham, and I wasn’t gone a furlong today and I was wishing I had taken them out again. He jumped super most

of the way. I probably took it off Jack (Kennedy, Felix Desjy) soon enough, but I never got to him at Aintree and I wanted to be sure that I would get by him and put the race to bed. “He has a huge future. You would imagine that he should mature for a summer’s grass and should improve again.”
