14,000 speed fines on M7 work zone The number of speeding fines issued to motorists along the M7 roadworks has reached almost 14,000 - with at least another three months still to go on the project. Digital display boards along the 14km stretch of the works zone are showing the number of prosecutions at 13,700 or an average of nearly 100 per day. Additional court sittings may be held to process the number of people hit with speed fines. Since November, motorists have been required to slow down from the maximum speed of 120km/ph to a reduced speed of 60km/ph. It emerged in recent days that the works to add an extra lane between Kill and the M9 merge will now finish in July - three months later than the estimated deadline given in January. At the current rate, the total number of speeding fines could breach 20,000 by then. Kildare County Council insisted that parts of the road would be widened on a phased basis before July. 30 beds still needed for Cycle Against Suicide in Kildare Town Cycle Against Suicide is looking for people to donate 30 beds for cyclists in the Kildare Town area early next month. The event arrives and stays overnight on Sunday, May 5 Organisers deliver a mental health talk on the Monday morning in Round Towers GAA Club to the wider Kildare community and then the peleton moves on to complete the 700 km journey. Local families are being asked to host a cyclist overnight, giving them a meal and a bed. Organisers are seeking homestay families in Kildare Town and the surrounding areas who would give a bed to a cyclist on Sunday night 5th May. The bicycles are stored overnight so the host would not have to worry about that. Organisers said: "We are delighted with the response so far but still need about 30 beds." address the challenges that suicide presents. Cycle Against Suicide sets out to change culture and create a society that openly talks about suicide, thus enabling people to speak up and reach out for help. The leading awareness campaign into communities is the charity's Main Cycle, which this year will take place from April 27th to May 6th. This is a community-wide

Glennons

awareness-raising campaign to mobilise all sectors of society to work together to change negative attitudes. In doing so, it's hoped to enable those who struggle with mental ill health to seek help. This campaign/cycle promotes a key message to local people: ‘It’s OK not to feel OK; and it is absolutely OK to ask for help’. This simple yet powerful message could save the lives of those in our communities who are feeling alone. All monies raised from the main cycle are invested into a schools programme. Ireland ranks 4th highest on teen suicide in the EU, with one in three young people experiencing a mental health difficulty in any given year. Schools build resilience and foster a sense of belonging amongst young people. Any help you could offer in helping us getting the message out to families in Kildare would be gratefully received by emailing homestays@ cycleagainstsuicide.com

CRIMEBRIEFS Brand new jeep

A North Kildare resident was awakened in her home by noise only to discover that the keys to her brand new jeep had disappeared. At about 2.20am, on Wednesday, April 24, a jeep parked outside a house at Oldtown Mill, Celbridge, was stolen. The vehicle, a black Volvo with a 191 KE registration number, was later found, abandoned, between Celbridge and Liffey Valley.

Break-ins to pubs

Newbridge gardaí believe that a burglary at a long-established Newbridge pub and a local sports and social club during the early hours of Easter Monday morning could be linked. Between 4am and 4.30am, Johnsons Bar, in Newbridge, was broken into. The bar at Ryston Sports Club, which is a short distance from Johnson’s, was also broken into around the same time. Anyone with information is asked to contact Newbridge Garda Station on 045 431212.

Call for drug squad in Athy as concerns raised about peddling to children number of years, the number of gardaí for County Kildare still remains well below the national average.

Louise McCarthy editor@kildarepost.com

Concerns have been raised about drugs being peddled to children in the Athy area with urgent appeals for a dedicated garda drugs unit in the town. Labour Cllr Aoife Breslin and Garda Supt Martin Walker — who has policing responsibility for the area — have been actively rallying for a dedicated drugs unit in Athy, since last year. It is understood that lack of garda resources means that Athy is not currently being provided with its own drugs squad, despite rising public concerns. The drugs squad in Newbridge is currently being shared with Athy. Cllr Breslin said: “We need a dedicated drugs squad in Athy so that we can get rid of the problem. “I know of young people in debt due to drugs. And there are dealers selling ... in Athy.” The politician was quick to point out that Athy has a huge

Supt Martin Walker helped to establish the Willow Project in Athy amount of positive aspects but that, like in any other town in Ireland, there is a drugs issue, and it needs to be addressed by a dedicated unit and more garda resources. According to Cllr Breslin, heroin is a significant problem in Athy. Despite a steady allocation of new recruits from Templemore over the last

Supt Walker, earlier this year, said: “If I had additional resources I would set up drugs squad in Athy.” Tributes were paid by the Mayor of Kildare, Sean Power at an event in Kildare County Council’s offices to Sr Consilio, who established the Cuan Mhuire drug addiction service in Athy in 1966. The centre was set up to provide residential, medically supervised detoxification and addiction treatment services. The Athy Centre has a 117-bed alcohol addiction treatment facility and a 22 bed unit for those in recovery from drug addiction. Meanwhile, the Willow Project, for over 18s, has been established with the assistance of Supt Walker in Athy and this assists people who are still using drugs, giving them supports to stop.

Renovations underway at the historic Carmelite Church in Kildare town Renovations are underway at the Carmelite Church, but worshippers will not be affected. The Carmelite said it has taken the decision to close its car park “for security reasons from 9pm to 7am while works are underway at the historic church. However, on Saturday, Tuesdays and First Fridays, the gates of the car park will only be closed after Masses. There is currently scaffolding and dust sheeting around the front and rear exterior sections of the church. The present church was built in 1898, continuing the long tradition of the Carmelites, who originally came to Kildare at the end of the 13th Century. Last summer, worshippers queued all night last night to pay respects to the relics of St Louis and St Zelie Martin at the church. The event was organised as part of the World Meeting of Families. The sacred objects

remained overnight in the Church until 9.30am the next morning. Traffic congestion was caused in the area as hundreds of motorists came and went. Stewards were on duty to direct cars and the neighbouring Friary GAA field was used for overflow parking. The Friary shop bedside the Church is popular for gift cards for Masses, birthdays, baby births, weddings etc. They have baby gifts, angel gifts, statues, grave candles, christeningcandles, wedding candles, rosary beads, prayer books, Bibles and medals.

Works are currently underway at the Carmelite Church in Kildare town (inset left). The car park (above) is closed overnight for security reasons while the works are underway

Aoibheann's Pink Tie is this year's beneficiary of Gala Charity Ball Kim O’Leary

Local charity Aoibheann’s Pink Tie has been announced as the chosen charity partner of the Network Ireland’s Kildare Branch with a very special Gala Charity Ball taking place this November. This marks the 20th year of the Network Kildare Gala Charity Ball, and Mick Rochford of Aoibheann’s Pink Tie said that they are “over the moon” to have been chosen. Speaking to the Kildare Post, Mick Rochford said: “We’re over the moon. To be chosen as Network Ireland’s Kildare Branch charity partner is great and the Gala Charity Ball will be taking place this November.” Aoibheann’s Pink Tie National Children’s Cancer Charity was set up by Mick Rochford and Jimmy Norman after the tragic loss of Jimmy’s daughter Aoibheann to cancer at just eight years of age. During Aoibheann’s year-long battle with this

dreadful disease, the family found little or no financial or practical support for children and their families. When Aoibheann passed away the men wore pink ties at the funeral, which was Aoibheann’s favourite colour. The charity was formed in her memory to remedy the lack of support for other children and their families going through treatment. Aoibheann’s Pink Tie has a large team of dedicated volunteers who provide services such as helping to pack overnight bags and offering hampers to families. “We’ve actually just put down a deposit for a respite house near Crumlin Children’s Hospital and works will be carried out on it in the next few weeks, and we’re hoping to have a family in there by December,” Mick added. Emma Murphy, branch member and president of the Kildare Branch commented: “As the Kildare branch member who nominated Aoibheann’s Pink Tie, I am absolutely thrilled that they

The day itself will feature top-class racing and will include family fun with face painting, novelty mascot characters, live music and a BBQ. The art competition will be open to primary schools in Naas and the surrounding towns and villages, with prizes awarded for the top three entrants while the winning child’s art work will

The top prize will go to the Best Turned Out Estate with a prize of a €500 voucher from award-winning garden specialists Caragh Nurseries up for grabs. Entry forms for the Naas Tidy Towns competition will be available at the end of May when they will be distributed

to homes and available for pick up from Naas Community Library.

Marketing Options Various marketing options will be available to traders who can avail of gazebos where they can provide

racegoers with sample products, meet with the public and promote their brand. Each trader who books space will also be provided with 10 complimentary admission tickets, race card advertising and their brand will feature on the large screens at the track. A number of units will also be available complimentary for community and sports groups and interested groups should contact Jackie Donohoe at Naas Racecourse directly. Naas Racecourse itself is a boutique-style track — everything is easily accessible, and spectators can get up close to the action whilst relaxingin the Circle Bar, or enjoy views of the racetrack and finishing post from the Panoramic Restaurant. Located between the Grandstand and Parade Ring, the building is now home to Goff ’s Owners and Trainers Lounge and enjoys 180-degree views of the track. Naas Racecourse manager

Tom Ryan said: “In order to attract race goers, you need to be able to offer them a great experience with second-to-none facilities. Although we welcome people from all over Ireland and the UK, our local patrons are by far our biggest and most important customer base. “We want to ensure that the people of Naas and the surrounding towns know we are here and for them to feel part of this great facility. “Naas Racecourse is a wonderful amenity, not just for an elite group of people, it’s for everyone, young and old. “We would encourage anyone who hasn’t been here before to visit us and see all that we offer from exciting racing, to great facilities, food and hospitality.” Naas Town Goes Racing Day will run on Saturday, July 6. Cllr concerned regarding Celbridge 251 housing units Independent Councillor Brendan Young has expressed concern after An Bord Pleanála granted planning permission for 251 residential units in Celbridge. It is understood that the 251 residential units are planned for the area between Oldtown Rd and Shackleton Rd in Celbridge. A decision published by the planning board shows that O’Flynn Construction has approval to build 167 houses and 84 apartments on Shackleton Road in Oldtown, Celbridge. The houses will have a mix of two, three and four bedrooms, while the flats will be built in several blocks of two to three storeys. The project also will include a crèche and car and bike parking spaces. Cllr Young has said that he is concerned that planning has been rushed and that issues raised by people with local

Cllr Brendan Young knowledge have not been adequately addressed. Commenting on the decision, Cllr Young said: “In granting Planning Permission, An Bord Pleanála and KCC Chief Exec have gone against the views of local Councillors and the Transportation Section of the

Council. Despite the fact that the Roads Department of the Council recommended refusal and that Section 4.4 of the current Celbridge Local Area Plan has not been implemented – a Transport Management Plan to be prepared within a year of the approval of the LAP [by end of 2018] – the KCC Planning Dept. / Chief Exec. recommended that planning permission be granted (p.18, ABP Inspectors Report).” He said: "This is unacceptable. There's already a huge problem with traffic. We need more buses, especially for commuters. The NTA said Bus Connects would improve the public transport. We won't know until the summer what's in the second round of Bus Connects proposals: will there be enough new buses to significantly reduce car volumes on Shackleton Rd?” The ABP Inspectors Report said:“[The developments] ...

251 residential housing units were granted permission impact on traffic levels in the area would be marginal and would not be likely to have significant effects on air quality.” If the development goes ahead, Cllr Young said that 'no more development should be permitted until a Local Transport Plan is ready to be implemented.' Cllr Young has also raised

the issue of flood risk in the area. “There are a number of other issues as well as traffic and public transport, including road safety at the junction; community and social facilities; sewerage and stormwater. It is unacceptable that national regulations, which determine Bord Pleanála

decisions, appear not to require transport plans or community facilities for children and young people to be integrated into private construction of this scale. As to flood risk, the new estate is beside the Toni river and flooding has previously happened on the Shackleton Rd and Church Rd," said Cllr Young.

Evidence was given that the car was seized. On April 14, 2018, he was charged with being in possession of drugs and not having insurance, at Monread, Naas. Sgt Jim Kelly, outlined to Naas District Court, on Wednesday last, how at 6.40pm, on October 14, 2017, the accused was 'observed at a checkpoint, and that he began to turn around and accelerate at speed and lost control of the car, going to the other side of the road and impacting with a ditch.' He was also found with €10 worth of cannabis on the same date. Defence Solicitor, Conal Boyce, said that the accused has a 'major problem with dependency on illicit substances.' Mr Boyce outlined that the accused previously had a good job as a butcher but appears to have fallen off the wagon again. The court heard that he has now got employment in the construction industry and is receiving treatment for his drug addiction.

Evidence was heard how the accused had 18 previous convictions Section 15 possession of drugs for sale and supply and a number of driving matters, including not having insurance and NCT. Mr Boyce said: "Incarcerating him might have the effect of putting him backward rather than forward." Father and son

A father and son with an address in Sallins have both been bound to the peace for 12 months. The son, appeared before the court facing charges of Section 3 drugs, dangerous driving and no insurance. The father also appeared before Naas District Court charged under the public order act. Garda evidence outlined how on August 9, 2018, the Garda was in an unmarked patrol car, that did not have an NCT disc on the window and a tax disc. The Garda said that he spoke

to the son, and that during this time, he was called to a separate incident and then heard a car driving at high speed. The Garda went to where the sound of the car was coming from and observed the accused. The court heard how the car started driving in the opposite direction to the Garda and then did a u-turn. The Garda said: "I demanded a driving licence and insurance from him, he said that he did not have any. I informed him that I would seize the car, he revved it and it jolted forward and drove away from the scene." At this point, the Garda said that the accused's father was 'abusive' toward the Garda. The Garda said that he tracked the son's car and found €10 worth of cannabis in it. Evidence was given in court how the accused had 16 previous convictions for public order and previous for possession of drugs. Defence said that there is a 'significant alcohol problem' in the family. Defence outlined how the family live in caravan accommodation in 'very poor circumstances', and that they have nine children, one who died in 2017. Judge Bernadette Owens ordered that the father is ordered to keep the peace for 12 months on a bond of €250. The son was convicted and fined €200 for Section 3 Misuse of Drugs, for dangerous driving he was convicted and fined €250 along with getting a two years driving ban. Local election candidate for Kildare Municipal District

Anne Connolly: your voice for your community

Being A strong community activist for decades, hard work and commitment has never been an issue for Anne Connolly! “I have been involved with the Day Care Centre and Parish Welfare Association here in Rathangan, along with the local school Board of Management. I have witnessed first hand the many challenges that families face on a daily basis” she stated at her recent election launch. “Primary education is where the whole education cycle begins and this is where resources should be made available – a well-resourced primary education can only lead to better second and third level education, along with better training facilities available to youth should they decide not to progress to third level education”. Anne grew up in Cut Bush, The Curragh and currently works with the Defence Forces. “I have seen the struggles of families living and dependant on the salaries of the Defence Forces. Pay and conditions within the Defence Forces is a national disgrace. Yet, the Curragh Camp is now the DF Training Centre?” she queried, adding the state of some living quarters and buildings is also a disgrace. She continued: “Minister Kehoe, pay our soldiers, give them decent living quarters and lift the morale within the Defence Forces!”

Anne with son Ronan, husband Larry and daughter Eadaoin

Anne Connolly getting the full backing of Fianna Fail Deputy Leader Dara Calleary and Kildare South TD Fiona O'Loughlin. Sport is another passion of Anne's: GAA, especially the LGFA, soccer or basketball – Anne believes encouraging youth to participate in sport makes for a healthier youth – and a healthier society, and none more so than in disadvantaged areas. “In recent weeks, I’ve knocked on many doors and listened to people’s concerns – the urgent need for affordable rentals and housing, and social housing is prevelant; young families living with their parents, in crowded conditions is so wrong, and we should be doing more for the homeless. Extra funding must be allocated to local authorities to build more houses” she added. “Hospital waiting lists, or outpatients appointments, poor mental health support

and the delays people face when they attend A&E was repeatedly voiced. Pay the nurses – and keep them nursing here in Ireland – that would be a good start to alleviating part of the problems within the HSE!” The alienation of residents in rural areas is another concern: the lack of adequate broadband impacts on small businesses and their ability to grow in competitive markets, students unable to do research for college work, even being unable to log on and apply for government grants or simply to apply for your driving licence - all impact rural communities, as does the lack of rural transports links. “Having sufficient public transport can also act to reduce our carbon footprint climate change is real and

Fianna Fail Deputy Leader Dara Calleary addressing the audience in the RYAR Communinty Centre last Wednesday evening needs to be addressed now!” she commented. “Rural crime, fly tipping and illegal dumping, and of course, the poor conditions of our roads were other major concerns voiced. “I consider myself to be a very hard working and honest person, with a lot of community experience. Should I be elected on May 24, I will be ‘your voice for your community’ and I intend to represent all the residents of Kildare Municipal District – Anne”.

Other Side of the Coin

Sharing the ancient wisdom that is Chinese medicine

Treating hip pain with acupuncture Pain or discomfort around the hip region is a common problem among both genders and all ages. There are many conditions that cause hip pain such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, tendonitis of iliotibial (IT) band, hamstring/ groin strains, dislocation, fracture, infection, or just muscle tension. Hip bursitis is one of the most common causes of hip pain. Bursitis means inflamed bursa. A bursa is a small sac of fluid-filled cushion that prevents friction between bones and tendons. Bursitis is sometimes viewed as a condition among middle-aged or elderly persons. However, because bursitis can develop either by a direct trauma to the area, prolonged pressure, or by repetitive friction of the iliotibial band on the bursa from overuse through sports and other activities, the condition is common among young individuals and athletes. Hip bursitis causes pain, aching, and stiffness. The pain may be dull, burning, or throbbing and it can be very severe.

Out

elicits the pain. Getting up from a chair or getting out of a car can be difficult due to the pain and stiffness in the hip. Hip bursitis may cause radiating pain down the leg towards the knee. However, if pain radiates below the knee towards the foot, another cause or injury other than the hip needs to be investigated (such as sciatica). Another type of hip bursitis called ischial bursitis can cause pain in your buttock around the sitting bone and upper part of the hamstring muscles. In these cases pain is often aggravated after prolonged sitting on a hard surface.

Referral Pain

Symptoms Hip bursitis typically causes pain over the outside of the hip and thigh. The pain is often aggravated by excessive walking, running or stair climbing. The pain is often intensified at night, especially when one

lies on the painful side. Practitioners can often detect a tender spot or an area that is painful to touch or pressure on the greater trochanter region (the bony lump at the top of the outside of the thigh bone). A manoeuvre involving external rotation of the hip often

& About

Pain or discomfort around the hip region is not always related to the hip itself. Because some nerves, which originate from the low back spine, pass through the buttocks and hips, hip pain can be a referral pain due to low back injury. If you are experiencing pain, numbness, or tingling sensation below your knee, you may be suffering from sciatica associated with a lumbar related injury.

However, it should be noted that the opposite case occurs as well and based on my clinical experience it is often overlooked by health professionals. Many cases of chronic recurring low back pain and spasms are actually triggered by underlying hip problems (pain or instability in hip joint causing recurring spasms in muscles in the low back). In such cases, patients receiving treatment and examination focusing only on their low back are unlikely to heal completely unless the underlying hip issue is properly addressed. In my own clinics I nearly always treat the back and hip together, so that I cover all the bases, whether the pain originates in the back or in the hip is then not an issue, my experience tells me that the best success is achieved when both back and hip are treated as one, this method leaves no stone unturned as to the origin of the pain itself. I find heat combined with acupuncture to be the best treatment of choice when it comes to hip problems. Electro acupuncture treatment is also very effective in some cases

Prevention

I have over the years prevented many people from having to go through hip replacement operations, when it gets to the stage of severe long term degeneration/neglect in the hip joint it is then much harder to treat but not impossible. Many people with advanced hip pain could have saved themselves going through excruciating replacement surgery, if only they had researched or where properly informed by their doctor of other treatment options and modalities that actually work. Most times people suffering with chronic hip pain have been attending medical doctors for many years with the only treatment offered by these practitioners being antiinflammatory medication. This is disastrous! This neglect only serves to cause further and further degeneration in the hip. These patients should have been referred by their doctors to an acupuncturist at an early stage so as to prevent further degeneration of the hip joint thus preventing surgery. Forget anti-inflammatory pills; as soon as you develop any kind of hip pain get yourself off to an acupuncturist ASAP! And save your hip!

VICHY CARROTS We have fantastic carrots in this country. I always buy Irish ones and preferabl organic. So often, we just boil them but this recipe which is from France makes them a very special side dish. It is just perfect for a Sunday roast.Traditionally you use chervil instead of parsley, but I find that hard to get hold of, so I suggest parsley but even if you don’t have it, the butter and sugar make a big difference. You could really push the boat out and cook the carrots in sparkling mineral water.

James Nolan, Chairman PKFR with Dr Niamh Dolan and Densie Fitzgerald from Temple Street and James's kidney donor, his sister Catherine Doyle

Competing in this year's PKFR, Redmond Barry with Trainer Gordon Elliot

‘Have the conversation’ Kilcullen man urges people to carry an Organ Donor Card Louise McCarthy editor@kildarepost.com

A Co Kildare man who was given the gift of a kidney from his sister is appealing for people to have the conversation about organ donation, ahead of the annual Punchestown Charity Race. Butcher, James Nolan, of Nolan’s Butchers, Kilcullen, just over 30 years ago, turned his back on a life of dialysis after a successful kidney transplant operation, given by his sister Catherine in 1987. Now 30 years on, the Punchestown Charity Race, Ireland’s longest running charity race, is back again. Most of the riders will have made huge efforts to be fit enough to ride in the race, riding out every morning, learning to ride work, losing

weight and generally improving their fitness. In addition, they raise a minimum of €1,500 for the privilege, which goes to the Punchestown Kidney Research Fund. Inspired by Mr Nolan, who hails from a passionate equestrian family, he was a jockey in the race until 2002. He won the race on Nero’s Dancer in 2002, priced at the very rewarding odds of 50 to 1, an experience he describes as one of the highlights of his life. He said: “The message we are trying to spread is have the conversation about organ donation, noone knows God forbid when something might happen.” Mr Nolan suffered from kidney issues throughout his child and into his early adult years, spending over 12 months on dialysis. He is instrumental to fundraising

for vital services so that people with kidney issues and on dialysis can lead easier lives. Since a successful kidney transplant operation, life has never been better for Mr Nolan. He is married to Emma and they have a five-year-old son, Andrew James. On Saturday May 4, former Wexford Football and Hurling dual star, Redmond Barry is back again to try and go one better than the very close second place he finished in 2016. He hopes to team up once again with English Grand National Winning Trainer Gordon Elliott to land the hugely popular “Kidney Race” which is the annual curtain raiser to the Punchestown Festival. Also back to have another crack is Coilog Equestrian Centre’s Chris Byrne who is 61 and is riding in his sixth Punchestown Race. Isobel Wirgman – Neal is one of the youngest participants at 21 and will be riding for Jessica Harrington. It is amazing to note that Jessica has had a runner in this special race every year since the inaugural running of the race back in 1990 when she rode Banker’s Benefit. Thirty year old Ganna German who rides for Shelia Lavery will be representing The Ukraine, Michelle Brette will represent France,

Maurice Mccarthy will be representing England and Patrick Lawlor will be flying in from London to take part. The one they all have to beat is last year’s popular 50 to 1 winning combination of Karen Moore and Archibald who are back to defend their title. Meanwhile, The Punchestown Kidney Research Fund, (PKRF) established by Mr Nolan, has raised over €1.5 million in

funds. This money has been divided amongst various projects to improve the quality of life of patients on dialysis, support medical research projects that help people with kidney disease and increase organ donor awareness in Ireland. A milestone project in the history of the PKRF Charity was the opening of the new Renal Ward at Temple Street Children’s Hospital in January 2018, by James

Nolan’ sister and Kidney Donor, Catherine Doyle. Also this year, the PKRF also hope to support a brand new Self Care Haemo Dialysis Facility at Tallaght Hospital, under Dr George Mellottee. “The new 28 bed facility will give people on dialysis more independence,” concluded Mr Nolan. Living Organ Donors in Ireland and will continue to support many other projects funded by the Charity Race.

James competed in the race until 2002 when he won the race on Nero’s Dancer.Priced at the very rewarding odds of 50 to 1.

Get ahead with a hat from Jingles for a stylish racing look No racing outfit is complete without a hat, and this season’s top picks offer you an opportunity to add a dramatic touch to your outfit at a price that won’t break the bank. Kim Kelleher of Jingles has a beautiful selection in store of one-off, unique pieces created in-house at the popular Naas shop. “We have beautiful flapper-style hats with peacock feather on them, and pillboxes with ostrich feathers and diamante,” said Kim. Another popular headpiece is a ‘stick’ hat decorated with pearls. Kim draws inspiration for her creations from popular styles and is also keen on recycling and upcycling materials, using leftover bits and pieces to make her fantastic creations. The shop — which is one of Ireland’s largest hat shops — houses a vast range to suit every style, taste and price point, so racegoers are bound to find something to match their trackside outfit. Jingles’ own hats start at a very reasonable €60 and range up to €180.

Elsewhere, the shop stocks a vast selection of other hats and headpieces, along with its range of high-quality costume jewellery, handbags, gloves and pashminas.

Headband style According to Kim, headbands of all styles are flying out the door at the moment. “We can’t keep them on the shelves,” she said. Jingles stocks a vast array in every colour under the sun, which are typically priced from €25 to €40, and the styles range from simple to embellished and decorated with pearls and diamante. These are great for pairing with outfits such as jumpsuits, and are very versatile as they can easily go from morning to night. Buyers will wear them time and time again. As far as style inspiration is concerned, Royal ladies Kate and Meghan are still tops. “Kate is still up there, but Meghan is giving her a run for her money — anything that she puts on, people come in looking for.”

WILLIE MULLINS IN-HOUSE CLASH KEMBOY V AL BOUM PHOTO Justin Kelly

Punchestown has been the source of many champions over the years with Faugheen and Hurricane Fly even making their hurdles debuts at the course. Their nimble feet and turn of pace has electrified crowds here but setting pulses racing this year will be the staying chasers, namely those of Willie Mullins' yard. So often keeping his star string apart, Willie Mullins has signalled that Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Al Boum Photo will clash with stablemate Kemboy in the Punchestown equivalent. It's a mouth-watering prospect for racing fans, but also for Mullins, who waited a long time to claim his first Gold Cup success, and now appears to have the heir apparent to a throne he already holds. The horse in that throne is Al Boum Photo who will

Off the back of a memorable Irish Grand National win, Willie Mullins is all set for Punchestown arrive with all the fanfare you'd expect for a Gold Cup hero; the track-wide announcement, the threads of Cheltenham success stitched into his rug. However, the enigmatic Kemboy heralded his return to form after his Cheltenham Gold Cup fall with an emphatic win at Aintree over the Grand National weekend and is lurking once more. Kemboy is a puzzle of sorts; he was only a half decent hurdler, his best run coming at Cheltenham in 2017 when he finished fifth in the

Neptune, a race that didn't really produce any great movers in subsequent seasons. He was seventh a few weeks later at Punchestown and his switch to fences, while inevitable, was a less than headline-grabbing affair. Sutton Place beat him into second on his chase debut at Fairyhouse but Mullins' charge followed that by beating C'est Jersey, a faller in the recent Irish Grand National, at the same track in January 2018. Not unlike this year's winner, Burrows Saint, Kemboy was then given his chance, as one of very few novices, in the Irish Grand National. He was ridden in behind by jockey Bryan Cooper but he hadn't long to enjoy the trip as the horse came down after the first obstacle. Looking 12 months beyond that to this year's Cheltenham Gold Cup and a similar fate befell him once more as he unseated David Mullins at the first. He

revealed his undoubted quirks that day on the biggest stage as he pulled out of the jockey's hands and stumbled badly after the fence. As he ran aimlessly around the rolls of Prestbury Park, his stablemate Al Boum Photo took the adulation of the crowd by bounding to an historic win, Willie Mullins' first in the famous steeplechase. Before that ill-fated performance, Kemboy had actually improved considerably and more than mixed it with the big boys after three wins as a novice. He beat Alpha Des Obeaux on his seasonal debut in the Clonmel Oil Chase and

followed that with an even more impressive victory over the consistent Monalee at Leopardstown at Christmas. He was seven lengths ahead that day, cementing in his boss's mind the prospect of a Cheltenham Gold Cup bid. Kemboy won that Savills Chase over Monalee with spades in hand and was going away from the field at the line. Monalee is a good form yardstick as he always runs his race, when staying on his feet. On the other side of the yard in Closutton, it's probably unfair to use Al Boum Photo's novice form against him, not least because he is now the reigning Cheltenham Gold

Cup champion. However, as a novice, he was beaten by the same Monalee in February last year. Since then, he has won three times, beating Shattered Love by a length in Fairyhouse in April of 2018 and demolishing out and out stayer Total Recall by six lengths at Tramore in January. His most recent in that trio of wins was of course theCheltenhamGoldCup.He does have weaknesses, though, and it's worth noting that he has fallen twice in the last 12 months or so. He also ran out through the wings under Paul Townend in last year's novice chase at Punchestown, although the

horse can't take much blame from that mishap. Kemboy's Cheltenham collapse too showed the frail side of his temperament, but his follow-up at Aintree at the beginning of April unveiled the masterful. Just like his Savills Chase win, he cruised along; Ruby Walsh barely had to flick his wrists in the saddle to get him to sail over his fences. Established chasers like Clan Des Obeaux and Bristol De Mai came undone in his wake, most notably after the last as Ruby asked for an effort and was carried to the line with ease by the French-bred seven-year-old. He was efficient at his fences that day, never over extending and staying low, and with his victory, he proved he is a stout stayer. He was galloping away over the line, suggesting he'd get even further, although he was helped by the fact he could dictate the pace at the front end. Anytime he's run a trip above three miles and stayed on his feet, he's won. The other unfortunate occasions were the Irish Grand National and Cheltenham Gold Cup,

albeit notably that these were the biggest of occasions in big fields, perhaps pointing to another hole in his credentials. Kemboy did, however, cement his form here at Punchestown last year when he ended his novice season with a comfortable five-length win over A-Rated. The sight of him travelling intotheraceathisease, giving a huge leap at the last and bounding clear to the line was hugely impressive. Course form is vitally important at Punchestown and his rival, Al Boum Photo, has failed to register a win here in two starts. Kemboy has so often been in the shadow of others; he's rarely been the bookies' favourite and has very often been the Mullins second-string. That may will be the case again at Punchestown as Al Boum Photo's Cheltenham reputation goes before him. However, if he takes his chance, Kemboy's date in the PunchestownGoldCup could begin a domination of the staying chasing division next season.

MONGEY COMMUNICATIONS TO SPONSOR HISTORIC LA TOUCHE CUP AT PUNCHESTOWN Earlier this week, Punchestown Racecourse announced Mongey Communications are to sponsor the prestigious La Touche Cup cross country race on Thursday, May 2 at this year's Festival. The Mongey Communications La Touche Cross Country Steeplechase is widely considered to be one of the most historically significant races on the Irish racing calendar. Named in honour of the La Touche family, who gifted, in trust, the land on which Punchestown racecourse operates, this €30,000 contest is a true test of stamina. The four mile two furlong challenge incorporates over 35 jumping efforts over a combination of

natural obstacles such as laurel hedges, drop banks and traditional steeplechase fences. Despite being one of the longest races on the jumps circuit the Mongey Communications La Touche often produces the most thrilling of finishes with the tightest of margins. Fame surrounds this historic race where the most notorious obstacle on the track is Ruby’s Double Bank named after the champion jockey’s late grandfather Ruby Walsh Senior. Probably the most famous winning connection in the race was former James Bond actor Sean Connery who was involved with seven times winner of the Friends First La Touche, Risk of Thunder. With over 50 years

DOOLEY INSURANCE ELEVATE TO GRADE ONE STATUS AT PUNCHESTOWN Punchestown racecourse recently announced the exciting news that Dooley Insurance Group have further enhanced their support of Punchestown Festival in a deal that will see the Naas based firm elevate to Grade One sponsorship status. The €100,000 Dooley Insurance Group Champion Novice chase is one of the highlights on the opening day of Punchestown Festival and

theprestigious contest has attracted a top quality field of 23 entries at the early closing stage including three Cheltenham festival winners in the form of British raider Defi Du Seuil trained by Philip Hobbs, Any Second Now from the local base of Ted Walsh and the Cheveley Park Stud owned A Plus Tard. Delta Work, Getabird and Winter Escape are other notable entries. The 2018 running of this

championship race hit headlines when dual grand national winning jockey Davy Russell steered The Story Teller to victory having avoided final fence drama involving subsequent Cheltenham Gold Cup winning duo Paul Townend and Al Boum Photo. Established over 60 years ago the Dooley Insurance Group has since thrived and is now one of Ireland’s largest independent insurance

brokers with over 8,500 clients throughout the country. The official insurance partner of Punchestown racecourse now ‘top and tail’ the festival as the opening race on the final day also carries the Dooley Insurance Group banner. Tim Dooley, Managing Director of the Dooley Insurance Group commented on the new arrangement.

All smiles at a sunny Punchestown as Dooley Insurance Group Announce Grade 1 sponsorship ahead of the 2019 Punchestown Festival. (L – R) Tim Dooley, MD, Conor O’Neill CEO Punchetsown Racecourse, Mary Dooley and Brian Byrne Commercial and Personal Lines Manager. “We first entered the sponsorship stage at Punchestown in 2017 and have since learned that the partnership is beneficial on both a commercial and community basis. Both companies share the common bond of being anchored in county Kildare whilst operating our business on a national and on occasion international stage. It makes sense for Dooley Insurance to fly the flag at Punchestown it’s at the heart of our business network but it’s also a very important event to us on a personal level.”

Punchestown Commercial Manager, Janet Creighton welcomed the upgrade by saying, “today’s announcement demonstrates the importance of local support on a commercial level at Punchestown. Dooley Group Insurance have upgraded their sponsorship to one of the most prestigious races on the programme. This is a testament to their business foresight and hopefully a reflects the benefits of sponsoring and working alongside the Punchestown team. At the end of the day it has to make good business sense.”

COUNTY KILDARE CHAMBER LUNCH WITH AUSTRALIAN AMBASSADOR TO IRELAND

EVENTS On Tuesday, April 23, County Kildare Chamber was privileged to host the Australian ambassador to Ireland, His Excellency Richard Andrews, as guest of honour at a Chamber lunch in the Killashee Hotel. The event was very well attended by key businesses in Kildare, and, in particular, companies who are doing business or intend doing business in Australia. In welcoming the ambassador, reference was made by the Chamber CEO Allan Shine to the strong reciprocal business relationships that exist between the two. Reference was also made to

49

the fact that underlying those business relationships are the personal ties that substantially link both Kildare and Australia. Ambassador Richard Andrews said “The distance between the two countries meant that we’ve often neglected to understand the true significance and possibilities of our excellent relationship. “We would love to see more Australian companies here and we would also love to see more Irish companies in Australia using us as a bridgehead into Asia. “Agri-tech is an area in which both Australia and Ireland have strong expertise, and one where

we’d expect the Australia-EU Free Trade Agreement currently under negotiation to open up new opportunities for our economies. “Countries like Australia and Ireland will have an important role to play in solving the problem of feeding a growing global population sustainably, and it will be important for our farmers and our agri-tech sectors to work closely together,” said the ambassador. Closing the lunch, CEO of the Chamber Allan Shine presented the ambassador with a hand-crafted leather notebook, which was specially designed by a local company CarveOn.

Weave some Whatever room in your home you are decorating, there is usually one element which pulls everything together. In a sitting room the sofa draws the eye, while in a dining room, it is nearly always the table. For the bedroom, however, it’s all about textiles. Even more than the bed itself, the fabrics you use can have a huge effect on how a bedroom looks and feels. But with so many layers and textures in one place - from the bed and bedding to the headboard, armchairs and throws – it can be hard to know where to start. Fortunately, leading interior design house Neptune have some handy tips on how to make textiles work together to add warmth and comfort to your place of rest. An upholstered headboard is one sure fire way to make your bedroom feel indulgent. It will also add warmth by buffering away any draughts. Padded, fabric headboards are also great for layering pillows and cushions on top, making them especially cosy,

particularly if you like to sit up to read in bed. Whether you choose carpet, or you simply love wooden floors, every bedroom is likely to benefit from the addition of a soft rug or two.Put them by the bed so you can step onto them whenever you get up. Neptune’s Elgin and Tolsey Plaid rugs work particularly well, with cushioned weaves that toes will sink into. Even though you might not sit in your bedroom that often, it is good to have a chair around when you need it. As well as being useful when you are dressing, armchairs add atmosphere and a well-chosen one can be lovely to look at. Size-wise it is better to pick a smaller version than you would use in your living room. Neptune’s dainty Madeleine and Amelia armchairs are neat enough to tuck into a corner or sit at the end of the bed. Cushions and throws are the fun part of any bedroom scheme. If your bedroom is decorated in calm neutral tones, cushions are a great way to add colour.

With throws, as well as adding colour, it is also about choosing textures that feel good, like cashmere and velvet in winter, or a soft, open-weave cotton in summer. If you like your bed to look crisp, fold one neatly at the bottom, or for a more relaxed

feel drape a couple of throws loosely across the duvet. As a rule, the fewer hard surfaces you have in a room the more relaxed you will feel. So, as the bedroom is where you should be surrounded by comfort, think textiles to help make yours feel even more indulgent.

GARDENING

Vegetables and Fruit in your Garden: Time to sow and grow! VEGETABLES Nothing beats the taste of homegrown, new potatoes. Eating those thin-skinned, balls of floury goodness is a highlight of the gardening year. Many people's favourite variety of potato is the Irish variety Colleen. They are easy to grow, blight resistant and packed full of flavour. Start growing the Colleen potato now, in a pot or raised bed, for a crop of new potatoes come June. Read more about growing your own potatoes here. Want a quick and easy way to grow some of your 5 a day? Thenchooseaselectionofthe Speedy Veg & Salad seeds fromSuttons.TheSpeedyVeg & Salad seeds offer you a range of edibles that can be harvested in as little as three weeks. If you have limited time, space or gardening skill then consider growing some micro-green seeds including micro broccoli, peas, cress and alfalfa. They can be grown indoors on a warm windowsill, and will provide you with tasty, nutrient-dense, ‘fast food’. Suttons also offer a large range of popular vegetables in their seed tape collection. These seeds are impregnated into a special tape that you simply roll out, into your garden soil, and cover with soil. Just add water and hey presto the vegetables start to growthrough thesoilwithina couple of weeks. The seeds are specially spaced along the tape to save you having to “thin” or space the seeds when planting. They are so simple, yet so effective.

Lettuce, Cabbage, Broccoli, Leek Lettuce, cabbage, broccoli and leek plants are all available now for planting in your borders or grow bags. The variety of cabbage I recommend is the Hilton. It produces deep, green, cone shaped heads six weeks after planting. Plant Hiltoncabbage every two weeks for regular pickings all summer long.

Sow White Lisbon seed now for a harvest of spring onion from June to August. Sow the seeds into well prepared ridges or borders for a crop of rich, green, great tasting salad onions.

FRUIT Blueberries Blueberries are a super-food linked with numerous health and wellness benefits. Thankfully, they are also

fun to grow and produce a fantastic crop of flavorsome juicy blue fruit. They are also fantastic for adding vibrant and eye-catching colour to a garden. You can grow blueberries in pots and patio tubs. When planting, use GroWise compost and whilst growing, feed the plants with Gro-Sure plant food. Blueberries fruit over a long period, meaning you will enjoy regular fruits from June to September. Pear and plum trees grow

well and fruit reliably in Ireland. In order to achieve the best results plant the trees now on a sunny, south facing wall or trellis. Train your fruit trees to act as a wall cover, the protection from the wall will help to ripen the fruit and encourage strong growth.

Plums The best plum variety I grow is called the Victoria – a tasty, juicy fruit produced in abundance from mid July.

Rhubarb Rhubarb is an easy to grow and bountiful fruit. I recommend planting the Timperleyvarietynow, which will be ready for consumption in early April. Customer Testimonial: Renault Zoe 40kw QC James Connolly reviews the Renault Zoe

It’s almost a year now since I took possession of my Renault Zoe 40kw QC (Quick Charge) version, and I still get the same thrill from driving it today as I did on my maiden voyage out of Joe Mallon Motors back to the office in Clane — with a couple of deliberate detours thrown in along the way to extend the journey! The decision process was pretty simple — top of the list were the significant savings to be made; not only the running costs, but also, as it would be a ‘company car’, the added bonus of having no BIK to pay. Another consideration was the overall look of the Zoe, how the company logo/graphics would fit in with the overall image etc. What I got was a fun, eye-catching EV that is so easy to use — think of a bumper car at the fairground – that’s how simple it is to drive, no gears, less moving parts and it’s surprisingly quick. Somewhere on the list was the obvious ‘helping the environment’ benefit which I’m glad to be a part of, but admittedly it wasn’t a key factor.

extensive network of (currently) free public charging points, I certainly have! A lot of my journeys are short enough hops covering our catchment area, which is generally within a 30 minute radius of Clane, however I have on several occasions travelled to Galway on a full charge, used a public charging point when I got there and returned home with a great sense of satisfaction at the savings made – not to mention the (up to) 50% discount on tolls! All in all, it has been a great experience, so much so that I have ordered another electric vehicle to replace our ‘second’ car and installed solar panels to power the office/home charger, reducing costs further. She (Zoe) is booked in for her first service in a couple of weeks’ time. I doubt she’ll excite the mechanics much. — James (James Connolly, Capricorn Properties Ltd. New Mercedes-Benz GLE Launched By Breda Corrigan Member of Irish Motoring Writers’ Association (IMWA)

The path being followed by Mercedes-Benz by injecting replacement models with a new sense of youthfulness is most evident in the latest GLE sports utility vehicle just launched. While still the practical workhorse owners expect their SUVs to be, in its latest form the GLE has taken on what sales manager, Ciaran Allen calls a ‘more progressive look designed to attract an altogether wider segment of SUV owners’. Though fitted with the power needed to handle the rough and tumble (with a towing capacity of 3500kg), the GLE now has a noticeably more-rounded, more-elegant presence, designers having dialled down its predecessor’s bold muscular lines. With its younger-looking, ready-to-rock appearance – with 80mm longer wheelbase, short overhangs and flush-fitted wheels – the feeling in Mercedes-Benz circles is that it will appeal to male and female owners in more equal numbers. Helping this will be its fuel-efficient best-in-segment 0.29 Cd value (down from 0.32). More responsive Quiet and smooth running in terms of its driving and handling characteristics – with latest suspension and comfort control features – the new GLE is even more responsive, delivering greater enjoyment and driving comfort in normal road conditions and an even more competent off road performance. Its wheelbase almost 3-metres long, it is more spacious with room for up to seven occupants – rear seat passengers enjoying well over one metre legroom. A

The new Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 4MATIC second row of seats has the option of being electrically adjustable while a third seat row is available as an option. This extra spaciousness is reflected in its longer, wider dimensions with increased front and rear headroom, better elbow and shoulder room and better load capacity. For music lovers, there is the enjoyment of surround sound. Four diesels Four diesel models make up the new range all with 4MATIC transmission – a GLE 300d, GLE 350d, GLE 400d and GLE 450d. Ranked the first SUV in its class to meet Euro 6d emissions standards not coming into force until January next, it is fitted with an extended

exhaust gas after-treatment system and additional under-body SCR catalytic converter technology that reduce nitrogen oxide emissions down to 20milligrams per kilometre average. Model-by-model, the range breaks down into one 4-cylinder and three 6-cylinder units in the 1950cc to 2999cc power range with a 0-100kms acceleration spread from 5.7 seconds to 7.2 seconds with fuel consumption and CO2 emissions stats ranging from of 6.4-6.1-litres per 100kms and 169-161g/km (in the case of the 300d) to 9.4-8.3-litres per 100km and 214-190 g/km (in the case of the top-powered

450d). Promised later is a plug-in Hybrid electric version with a rival-beating 100kms full electric capability. Seeing this latest introduction as ‘yet another step’by Mercedes-Benz in the quest to broaden its ownership base, both by gender and by age, their sales manager in Ireland, Ciaran Allen said: "GLE is pitched to be one of the most ‘value-attractive’ models in its segment and forerunner in a parade of new 2019 model introductions, next of which will be the new A-Class saloon and CLA". Prices begin from €78,395 (GLE 300d 4MATIC) and from €95,995 (GLE 450 petrol 4MATIC). High Technology Features As with every new

KILDARE RACING NEWS WITH HORSE RACING IRELAND Ruby Walsh celebrates winning the Irish Grand National on Burrows Saint. Fairyhouse Photo: Patrick McCann/Racing Post

Burrows Saint with Willie Mullins and Ruby Walsh after winning The Boylesports Irish Grand National Steeplechase Photo.carolinenorris.ie

What a winning day for Willie Mullins! wHe's waited decades in his career to scoop the BoyleSports Irish Grand National and when he does, he claims first, second and third! Burrows Saint and Ruby Walsh romped home on Easter Monday for what will be a standout memory for trainer and jockey alike. Just over a month after Al Boum Photo landed Mullins his first Cheltenham Gold Cup, Burrows Saint won the Irish Grand National by almost two lengths, ahead of

20-1 shot Isleofhopendreams, his second year as runner up. Acapella Bourgeois came in third and with Snugsborough Benny in fourth and Mullins' Bellow Mome in fifth!

Timeforwest beats favourite in Cork Grade 3 Betway Cha se It was a brave decision by Monasterevin-based trainer Peter Fahey to pitch

Timeforwest in against the big boys in the Grade 3 Betway Chase at Cork on Easter Sunday, but his bravery was rewarded as the seven-year-old mare got the better of hot favourite Killultagh Vic by half-a-length. Supported at big prices all the way down to 4-1 at the off, Timeforwest jumped to the front at the third-last and dug deep under Donagh Meyler to keep the higher-rated Killultagh Vic at bay. Moone trainer Jessica

Harrington was among the winners at Fairyhouse on Easter Sunday but she will admit that she was rather fortunate to land the BoyleSports Novice Handicap Chase with Impact Factor. Mind’s Eye veered right at the second-last when in front, taking the strong-travelling Snugsborough Hall with him, and that left Impact Factor in an unassailable lead and the 4-1 chance stayed on well to beat Quamino by five and a half lengths.

It was a super Saturday for Harrington too as Marshall Jennings landed the competitive Buy Tickets Online at Cork. Racing off the pace and travelling well, rider Tom Madden needed the gaps to appear in the straight, but come at the right time they did as he picked up well to get the better of the hat-trick seeking Annie Fior by a neck. It might not be his only date with the winner's enclosure

throughout the upcoming season. Legendary trainer Arthur Moore used to dominate the Easter festivals at Fairyhouse and Cork and he rolled back the years on Sunday when winning the valuable Fitzgeralds Woodlands House Hotel & Spa Adare Handicap Hurdle at the Mallow track with 8-1 shot Crossed My Mind who scored under Niall ‘Slippers’ Madden.

Tramore rescheduled Following the cancellation of the Tramore meeting on Monday, April 15, Horse Racing Ireland has announced that a replacement fixture will take place on Tuesday May 14 (afternoon meeting). This meeting will close for entries by 12 noon on Thursday ,May 9 with declarations to be made by 10am on Monday May 13 and full details of the programme of races will be published in the Irish Racing Calendar in due course.

Upcoming fixtures Tipperary – Thursday, April 25 (First Race 5.05) Kilbeggan – Friday, April 26 (First Race 4.55) Limerick – Saturday, April 27 (First Race 1.35) Wexford – Saturday, April 27 (First Race 1.55) Navan – Sunday, April 28 (First Race 2.05) Sligo – Sunday, April 28 (First Race 2.20)

Other Racing News Rachael Blackmore lands first Grade 1 on home soil Rachael Blackmore has enjoyed a stunning season and she added a first Grade 1 on home soil to her impressive CV when guiding Honeysuckle to victory in the first Grade 1 of the day at Fairyhouse on Sunday, the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Mares Novice Hurdle Championship Final. Honeysuckle was in a different league to her 15 rivals, blowing them away with a smart turn of foot after the second-last. Timeforwest and Ronagh Meyler winning the Betway Chase G3 at Cork 21.04.2019 Photo: Alain Barr

The 6-4 favourite, trained by Blackmore’s main employer Henry De Bromhead, had five and a half lengths to spare over 20-1 outsider Elfile.

Kildare minors impress in Leinster opener By Robert Cribbin

Kildare Wicklow

1-16 0-12

Leinster Minor FC Round 1 Kildare were made work for it for long periods but eventually they did enough to get over Wicklow in the opening round of the Leinster Minor Football Championship. In a tightly fought game it wasn’t until Adam Conneely kicked in a 57th minute goal that Kildare put the seal on the seven point success. Conneely kicked 1-2 in the second half and along with Eoin Bagnall and Eoin Meehan he was part of a clinical full forward line. Clinical being the apt word as that is what Kildare were while their opponents kicked a number of wides and missed a couple of goal chances. Wicklow would have fancied themselves coming into the game with nine of the panel that lost out to Kildare in the Semi-finals of the Provincial campaign last term but it was the more inexperienced Lillywhites side that saw the result out in front of a sizeable attendance. Wicklow started the game in confident mood as Eoin Doyle converted a free after Joe Prendergast had been fouled. Kildare responded with a lovely score from Aaron Browne but Kevin O’Brien’s Wicklow outfit looked the livelier in the early minutes with another Doyle free followed up by a score from play by Bradley Hickey when he stormed through a few tackles and although he wanted a goal his shot went

too high. The impressive Eoin Bagnall got his opening point in the 7th minute from a free for Kildare before he had a goal attempt saved after he ran from deep though his shot proved pretty tame in the end. Eoin Meehan then levelled up the game when the Moorefield man curled a lovely shot between the posts after he received a pass from Johnny Owens. The teams then exchanged scores after Bagnall and Ging both shared points that left the teams level at 0-4 apiece. Wicklow were beginning to turn the screw though and they looked to have big claims for a penalty when Ging looked to have been fouled in the square but referee Chris Dwyer waved play on. Ging also shot wide during this period and after that miss the home side began to dominate around midfield and they then took the lead for the first time in the 19th minute with an Aaron Browne score. Bagnall duly knocked over three points in a row minutes later and in the blink of an eye Colin Ward’s men opened up a four point lead. Wicklow had gone fifteen minutes without a score until Eoin Doyle knocked over a stoppage time free to narrow the deficit at the break. Kildare had a three point lead entering the second period but it was wiped out within seven minutes of the restart after a fine effort from Eoin Doyle where he produced a fabulous solo dummy to work himself into space was added to by efforts from Ging and Shane Daly. Kildare looked to be slightly on the ropes at this stage but sub Aedan Boyle edged them back in front with a score from his first touch after good build up play from Meehan and Browne. Ging responded

Kevin Eustace(St.Laurences) passes neatly out of defence.

Kildare's Shane Flynn(Balyna) outjumps Wicklow's Joe Prendergast. with a free and both sides then had efforts on goal but Cillian McDonald kicked wide for Wicklow while Adam Conneely had a shot saved by Andy Nolan. Wicklow threw huge numbers into attack at different periods of the game and they were punished in the 42nd minute when an incisive Kildare breakaway resulted in Meehan kicking a point. Ging and Tommy Gill then

Two Mile House's Adam Conneely avoids collision with Wicklow's goalkeeper Andy Nolan after he slotted the ball to the back of the net for Kildare's goal in the Leinster Minor Football Championship Round 1 at St.Conleth's Park last Tuesday evening.

exchanged scores before Wicklow had a glorious chance to go ahead when McDonald got free again but Kildare goalkeeper Cian Burke stood tall to make a cracking save from the wing back. That seemed to turn the tide in Kildare’s favour as Adam Conneely kicked a quickfire brace of scores after a couple of mistakes in the Wicklow defence. Ging replied with a lovely

score near the sideline but it was all Kildare in the final ten minutes as they scored 1-3 without reply. Bagnall, Browne and Jimmy O’Neill got the points while more crazy defending from Wicklow resulted in Conneely and Meehan finding room deep in the Wicklow half and after Meehan found Conneely in space he made no mistake in slotting a shot under the stricken Nolan. Ging kicked a late consolation score for Wicklow but that’s all it was as Kildare got their campaign off to the perfect start. Kildare: Cian Burke (Clane); Ryan Comeou (Balyna), Oisin O’Rourke (Athy), Tommy Gill (Carbury) 0-1, Mark Maguire (Naas), Conan Boran (Eadestown), Jack Quinn (Leixlip), Kevin Eustace (St.Laurences), Shane Flynn (Balyna), Adam Conneely (Two Mile House) 1-2, Johnny

Coill Dubh vanquished by cruising Naas

Kildare Kildare

x-xx x-xx

Senior Hurling Championship Preliminary Round By Robert Cribbin It was as the scoreboard, a walk in park for Naas who easily got the better of Coill Dubh in a rather forgettable Senior Hurling Championship game. From the moment Shane Ryan gave Naas a 9th minute lead the Championship favourites never looked back in a dominant display. Shane Ryan, Cathal Dowling and Ross Kelly got Naas’s goals and with Jack Sheridan and Conor Dowling also scoring heavily the result was never in doubt as the County Town aim to win their first Title in seventeen years. The game was so one sided that Coill Dubh’s Mark Delaney did the majority of their scoring while they only had one point from play up till the 58th minute and manager John Byrne will have to do a good bit of work to rebuild the confidence after such a heavy beating. Mark Delaney knocked over a pair of frees to give Coill Dubh an early lead but Naas soon hit back with a point from Conor Dowling. Naas then kicked on with points from Shane Ryan, Brian Byrne and Ross Kelly giving them a 0-5 to 0-2 lead approaching the halfway mark of the half. Delaney briefly narrowed the gap but it was from here that Naas really went into overdrive with five points in a row. Ryan, Phillip Cocoman and Jack Sheridan were all on target as Naas moved into a 0-10 to 0-3 lead. Ryan Casey knocked over

When the going gets tough Shane gets going...Shane Broderick(Naas) showing fierce determination. Coill Dubh’s first point from play in the 20th minute on the back of a Delaney free but all it did was keep them somewhat in touch and that option soon wasn’t there with Naas finally finding the net courtesy of Shane Ryan after great build up play by the Dowling brothers Conor and Cathal. Shane Broderick duly followed up with his first point from midfield with Cocoman and Conor Dowling also on target on the back of Jack Sheridan knocking over a trio of scores including a beautiful sideline cut.

Coill Dubh's Barry Mullins attempts to block Shane Ryan's shot.

Ross Kelly kicked in a stoppage time goal and although Delaney replied with a free the game was well over by the half-time whistle with Naas leading 2-16 to 0-6. he teams shared the first few scores of the second half with Naas points from the Dowling’s and Sheridan cancelled out by a pair of Delaney frees. Coill Dubh were way off the pace though as Naas looked the much sharper team and they soon had their third goal when Conor Dowling had a ball on the wing and his pass in towards the square was

caught by his namesake Conor and despite mishitting the shot it still bounced passed Owen Lenehan in the Coill Dubh goal. Naas didn’t look back from there with a couple of Byrne frees added to by scores from James Burke, Cathal Dowling and another sideline from Sheridan. Coill Dubh did register a bit of a gallop before the end with scores from play by Delaney and Ruairi Hayden but Naas were in a world of their own and they rounded off the game with Sheridan, Burke and Conor Dowling all on

target to give them a huge victory on a 3-29 to 0-12 scoreline. Naas: Cormac Gallagher, Paul Sullivan, Richard Hogan, Kieran Maher, Shane Walsh, Rian Boran, Simon Leacy, Brian Byrne 0-4 (0-4fs), Shane Broderick 0-1, Phillip Cocoman 0-3, Ross Kelly 1-1, Conor Dowling 0-4, Jack Sheridan 0-8, Cathal Dowling 1-3, Shane Ryan 1-3. Senior Hurling Championship Preliminary Round With less than two minutes to go in this rematch of last year's county final, Celbridge looked set to once again prevail over Ardclough as they held a four point advantage at 3-15 to 1-17. That lead had been built in the final quarter as they outscored their opponents by 1-5 to 0-3 to stand on the cusp of an important win. However they hadn't counted on the intervention of substitute Tony Spain who rattled the net twice in injury-time to turn the game on its head with Ardclough prevailing by the narrowest of margins when the final whistle blew. Spain was only on the pitch for the final quarter but he ended the game as joint top scorer for his side finishing his cameo with a critical 2-1 to his name. The defeat will hurt even more for Celbridge as they twice built sizeable leads that they let slip away. They dominated the first half and were seven points ahead with 20 minutes on the clock. Billy White and Paul Hogan both found the back of the Ardclough net taking advantage of poor defending from the 2018 beaten county finalists. Trailing at one point by 2-7

Celbridge's Kevin Murphy breaks out of defence with Ardclough's Ronan O'Malley in hot pursuit. to 0-6, Ardclough rattled off five unanswered points to get back into the game before the break. They jumped into the lead on the resumption with Sean Whelan finding the Celbridge net. It was nip and tuck for a time with the sides exchanging scores before Celbridge pushed ahead again entering the final stage with Marcus Kinsella hitting their third goal.

That left them 3-15 to 1-17 ahead before Tony Spain took control of proceedings hitting two goals in injury-time to once ahead turn the game on its head and snatch an unlikely victory from the jaws of defeat for Ardclough. Roche top scorer as Leixlip edge out 14 man Clane in Senior Hurling Championship By Robert Cribbin

Leixlip Clane

1-18 1-14

Senior Hurling Championship Preliminary Round Leixlip got their Senior Hurling Championship campaign off to the perfect start with a tightly fought victory over Clane. Leixlip were helped when Clane lost Shane Ryan to a red card at the back end of the first period but it wasn’t until Stephen Ryan netted in the second half that the seal was put on the result. John Roche was in stunning form for the victors with his eight points putting the team in Maroon and White into an ideal position. A first half goal from David Gibbons had put Clane into an early lead but the loss of Ryan eventually told with Leixlip’s fresher legs winning out. Leixlip began the brighter with John Roche knocking over a brace of points with his second attempt tipped over the bar by Mark Doyle after he tried to force a goal. Clane replied with a David Gibbins free before the same player then found the net in the 7th minute when a point attempt from Bernard Deay rebounded off the bar and directly into the hands of Gibbons and he made no mistake in beating Lee Hogan. Leixlip retaliated with points from Roche and Cathal Derivan and although Clane added on another Gibbons

Clane's Bernard Deay on a long solo run towards the Leixlip goal free, Leixlip began to take command. Roche, Derivan, Aidan Ryan and Stephen Ryan were all on target in a quickfire period that gave Tom Melville’s outfit an 0-8 to 1-3 lead. Conor Graham landed a fine point from distance for Clane in response but they then suffered a huge blow when Shane Ryan was given a straight red card for an attempted pull on a Leixlip player. After Ryan’s dismissal, the two teams then exchanged scores with Gibbons and Bernard Deay on target for Clane before Roche and Stephen Ryan responded in kind to give Leixlip an 0-11 to 1-6 lead at the break. Sean Christiansen knocked over a point from range in the opening stages of the second

half and although that brought Clane to within a point it was from here that Leixlip went into overdrive with four points in a row. A Roche free was followed up by efforts from play by Cian Bracken and Cathal Melville while Cathal Derivan also scored even if he wanted a goal but his shot was too high. That gave Leixlip a five point lead and while Clane replied via a Gibbons free, Leixlip looked like they had put the seal on the result when Stephen Ryan raced clear before firing the sliotar past Mark Doyle and all of a sudden Leixlip had a 1-15 to 1-8 buffer. Clane then began to throw the shackles off and a pair of points from Paddy McKenna

Clane's Conor Graham gets his shot away before the arrival of Leixlip's Cian Bracken

and efforts from Simon Healy and Robbie Hyland had Clane back to within a score entering the final ten minutes. It was then tit for tat with consecutive McKenna frees cancelled out by points from play by Roche and Stephen Ryan. A Conor Graham score from out the field at the beginning of stoppage time gave hope that Clane would still be able to get something out of the game but alas it wasn’t to be with Conor Burke knocking over an insurance score as Leixlip battled to a four point victory. Éire Og Corrachoill dig deep to get the better of Confey By Robert Cribbin

Éire Og Corrachoill Confey

0-17 0-12

Senior Hurling Championship Preliminary Round A stirring last quarter from Éire Og Corrachoill gave them a deserved victory over Confey in the Preliminary Round of the Hurling Championship on Monday afternoon. The teams were level in the 57th minute but Éire Og found another gear late on as they scored five points in a row to seal the victory. Indiscipline is what cost Confey in the end with wing forward Colm Chan getting sent off in the 46th minute and from that point onwards they were outscored 0-8 to 0-2. Liam Dempsey who is a son of Joe and brother of Evan was the main marksman in attack for the winners but it was back in the defence that the platform was laid out as they shut down an impressive looking Confey attack. The fact that normal midfielder Kevin Connor was deployed in the full back line told its own story but it all worked out in the end as Confey suffered their opening defeat of the year. Confey started out the

better and they took the lead within seconds of the throw-in as Frank Bass knocked over a free. Éire Og quickly replied with a Liam Dempsey score but Confey were soon back in front when Phillip Quigley brilliantly found the target despite being surrounded by a number of bodies. Éire Og then kicked on as they scored the next four points after Dempsey and Liam Power notched a brace each to go into a 0-5 to 0-2 lead. Confey responded with points from Quigley, Fiachra Lynch and Paul Divilly to level up matters. A 65 from Dempsey briefly gave Eire Og the lead again but it didn’t last long with Confey finishing the first period in better fettle as a free from Bass was followed up by two efforts from play by Colm Chan. Confey probably should have been further ahead as they hit a few careless wides but they were still content as they held an 0-8 to 0-6 lead at the interval. They further extended the lead at the beginning of the second half with Chan converting his third point from play. The Éire Og response was instant though as they hurled over three points in a row with 19 year old Dempsey, Power and Conor Kielty all finding the target. Divilly then edged Confey

back in front with a fine score from distance but it would be the last time that they would lead as just minutes later Colm Chan was sent off for an incident near the sideline where ref Niall Colgan consulted his linesman before giving the wing forward his marching orders. Éire Og briefly took advantage with points from Dempsey and Garry Johnson giving them an 0-11 to 0-10 lead but the 2018 League Champions weren’t going to go down without a fight with Bass and Eoin Lynch scoring either side of an Ollie O’Neill effort as the teams remained deadlocked. Confey eventually gassed out though as they ran out of ideas and Éire Og took full advantage. Confey didn’t score throughout the final ten minutes whereas Éire Og found a new sense of life and after Barry Cormack put them back in front with a long range free they didn’t look back. Johnson, Ollie O’Neill and Tim Hennessy also scored before Dempsey rounded off a fine individual performance as he knocked over the final score of the game to give Eire Og Corrachoill a five point victory. Eire Og Corrachoill: Paul Dermody; Cathal McGrath, Kevin Connor, Michael Begley, Niall Connolly, James Dolan, Rory O’Neill, Garry Johnson 0-2, Barry Cormack 0-1 (0-1f ), Tim Hennessy 0-1, Paul Kennedy, Liam Power 0-3, Cillian Manders, Conor Kielty 0-1, Liam Dempsey 0-7 (0-2 65’s). Littlewoods Ireland Camogie Leagues Div 3 Final The Kildare Camogie team produced a strong second-half performance to seal their return to the

second tier of the Littlewoods Ireland Camogie Leagues at the first time of asking as Division 3 champions. They trailed by 0-10 to 1-5 at the interval, with Rebecca Noonan excelling for Limerick, scoring seven of her eight points in that opening period. Kildare needed a

sensational solo goal from Caoimhe Shiels to keep in touch, after Shauna Mulligan had won possessaion initially around the middle third. Williams and his mentors shuffled the deck during the change of ends however and that made the difference. Manager Peter Williams told Kfm: The girls have shown all year how good

battlers they are, how dogged they are, but the last 20 minutes was outstanding. “There were a few changes made at half-time and they worked a treat.” SCORERS FOR KILDARE: S Hurley 0-8(4fs, 3 45s); C Shiels, H Tynan 1-0 each; L Sutton 0-1
