Garda manpower double for big teenage disco nights

NASA PLAN FOR TEENAGE DISCOS!

Garda manpower on the streets of Letterkenny is double that of an ordinary Saturday night when major teenage discos are held in the town, it has emerged. Amid growing concerns about young people being exposed to alcohol and drugs – and an increase in sexual assaults – a major new initiative is underway. A special working group has been set up to look at ways to make socialising safer for young people. The Donegal Youth Service, Gardai, Tusla (the family and child agency) and representatives from the town have come together along with bus operators. And now bus operators are being asked to adopt what will be known as the No Alcohol Substances Aboard (NASA) policy. The idea is to stop people from consuming alcohol on buses on their way to events. Details of the initiative were given at Monday’s meeting

of the Donegal Joint Policing Committee in Lifford. Garda Chief Superintendent Terry McGinn said that up to 2,000 young people can come to Letterkenny for teenage discos. In recent times, concern has been expressed about the amount of alcohol being consumed before discos, and related difficulties that can arise, including sexual assaults, and young people presenting themselves at Letterkenny hospital in need of medical assistance. “Everyone is taking it very seriously,” she told the meeting. And she added: “It’s all about raising awareness about alcohol and drugs.” Members of the JPC have

backed the NASA initiative. For many parents, it can be a worrying time when their children are going to discos. Bars and nightclubs have been cooperating with the gardai, and talks have been held. The next big teenage disco in the town will be on Friday, April 12 in the Pulse Venue. Supt. McGinn divulged that the Pulse will have a “quiet room” for the teenage discos. This will be a room where young people, who appear to be “under the influence”, can wait in safety. Their parents will be phoned and can then come in and collect them. While the sale of alcohol to under-18s is probihited, one of the biggest problems is that some young people take alcohol before they arrive at a venue. Concern has also been expressed about the increase in drugs. The Caothaoirleach of Donegal Co. Council, Cllr Seamus O’Domhnaill, said that the drugs scourge “must be tackled” and he added that “young people need to be vigilant” as “they do not know what they are taking.”

Letterkenny farmer becomes Ireland's latest Lotto millionaire There were jubilant celebrations at Lotto HQ this week as Donegal farmer Odhrán Doherty (23) became Ireland’s newest millionaire after he claimed the €1 million top prize from the Lotto Plus 1 draw with a ticket gifted to him from his dad Liam. The father and son are very close and work together on the family farm at The Glebe in Letterkenny. The lucky Donegal man is the 14th millionaire created since Lotto and Lotto Plus game enhancements were introduced last September. The game improvements – which saw the top prize in Lotto Plus 1 double from €500,000 to €1 million - have resulted in a 50% increase in winners, with over five million winners sharing almost €80 million in prizes since the September launch. Odhrán – who arrived at Lotto HQ in style in a white Hummer with family and friends – said he was completely shocked when he check the Lottery results on Saturday night and realised

that he had won the huge sum of money. Odhrán was going to a party in a local bar that evening and called into the adjoining shop to check his ticket. His dad Liam said: "He rang me and said the ticket had said he was a winner. He checked with the guy in the shop but they said it was too big for them to tell him how much he had won. "He told me I had better come out. I thought it was an early April's Fool joke or something. When I got out to him he came out of the party with his hands above his head and said he was a millionaire. "I took the ticket off him for safe-keeping and we realised later there was only one winner of the one million euro." A former pupil of Woodlands National School and St Eunan’s College in Letterkenny, Odhrán is big into farm machinery and a new vehicle could well be on the cards with his new-found wealth.
