Clarity sought over Short Stay Ward reopening plans Urgent clarification from the Government is being sought over its pledge to reopen the 19 bed Short Stay Ward at Letterkenny University Hospital. Donegal TD Pearse Doherty raised the issue after receiving a response to a Dáil Question on the issue of new hospital beds in which the Minister failed to specifically cite Letterkenny as one of the locations where additional beds will be rolled out next year. Deputy Doherty said: “When I sought clarification from the Government over recent days about its plans to provide additional hospital bed capacity and queried the locations and time frame for the delivery of these new beds, there was no reference made to the Letterkenny Hospital in the Minister’s reply. “Instead, the Minister simply responded to state that in early 2019 an additional 80 hospital beds will be brought on stream and these included an additional 30-bed ward in Our Lady of Lourdes Drogheda, a 40-bed modular ward block in South Tipperary General Hospital, and four high dependency beds in the Mater and Cork University Hospital respectively. “The Minister went on to give some vague details about the government allocating an additional €10 million in capital funding next year for further acute beds as part of the Winter Initiative 2019/20. “It’s now vital – given the severity of hospital overcrowding and lack of capacity at LUH – that the Government immediately provides clarity in respect of these plans to reopen the Short Stay Ward in Letterkenny. “This is why I intend to now raise this issue once again with the Minister where I will be demanding clarity in relation to the unit and when it’s expected that the short stay facility will be reinstated at the hospital.”

Answers sought over continuing delays of expensive project

COMPLETION OF TWIN TOWNS PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE DELAYED THE NEW SEA A Finn Valley councillor is calling for answers in relation to the continuing delays regarding the completion of the expensive new pedestrian bridge over the River Finn between Ballybofey and Stranorlar. Cllr Patrick McGowan, Cathaoirleach Stranorlar Municipal District, has called on the Transport Infrastructure Ireland and Donegal County Council to explain the delay. He wants all works completed without any further delay. "Since the schools opened in September there has been hun-

dreds of students and other pedestrians crossing this bridge daily," he said, adding: "Weekends can be as busy with pedestrians and traffic trying to pass one another in this restricted space when one side of the bridge is fenced off due to the construction." Cllr. McGowan has now released details of an official reply that he has recieved from a council engineer about the bridge. It stated: "The completion of the Finn footbridge has been delayed as a result of a number of technical issues which have

THE acutely aware of the urgency in having the bridge open to the public and appreciate the patience of all concerned. "The new footbridge will provide a much needed pedestrian crossing over the Finn which will be of great benefit to the local people, school pupils and visitors and it is something that has been fought hard for over a number of years for the twin towns. "The work is being done to a high quality and standard and will cost in the region of €800,000 and is fully funded by TII."

The Council is engaging with the contractors, Deane Public Works Ltd., in progressing the scheme and reaching completion in advance of the busy upcoming Christmas shopping season.
