Welcome to RiverCenter! It is such a pleasure to introduce our 2022-2023 season. Comedy, tragedy, dance, rock and roll, silent pictures, intrigue, acrobatics, cirque extravaganza, and more all await our audiences.
This season we continue with our tour origination projects. The national tours of Jesus Christ Superstar, A Magical Cirque Christmas, Pride and Prejudice, and Julius Caesar will originate from right here in Columbus. These projects each bring dozens of theatre professionals from around the country to our community for several days or weeks to put the final touches on these touring productions. The community directly gains through new economic activity while RiverCenter audiences will experience the thrill and excitement of seeing the very first full performance of these outstanding touring productions.
Right on the tails of our first silent picture Safety Last with The Wave—the fun continues when Ron Carter returns to accompany the 1925 silent picture The Phantom of the Opera followed by From Broadway to Hollywood and A Salute to the American Songbook with Dr. Joseph Golden, both featuring The Wave. As another tradition builds with The Wave, our Gingerbread Village returns and will be open on December 3, when we will have Christmas With The Wave in The Village!
This season, we offer a grouping of three productions that are ideal for families: A Magical Cirque Christmas, The Peking Acrobats featuring the Shanghai Circus, and Madagascar the Musical. When purchased as a package – enjoy a generous discount for adult tickets and then take advantage of the special children’s prices for some very affordable, professional entertainment that the entire family will enjoy. Families can enjoy the free performance of the United States Army Field Band and Soldiers’ Chorus. This is a great introduction to the RiverCenter experience with the very best touring musical ensemble of the United States Armed Forces.
Audience favorites RAIN—A Tribute to the Beatles and Riverdance return with entirely new productions – Riverdance with new staging and music for its 25th anniversary tour and RAIN adds music from Abbey and the Rooftop Concert. What a great opportunity to relive and share your favorite RiverCenter experiences with friends and family!
We have not forgotten about our school-age audiences with some outstanding experiences. Click, Clack, Moo and Junie B.’s Essential Survival Guide to School for schooltime matinees for younger grades and the Aquila Theatre production of Julius Caesar for the older grades. Step Afrika! will feature five days of free streaming content available to anyone who wants to learn more about this exhilarating tradition in dance. There is so much more to experience at RiverCenter, and I hope that you will take advantage of as much of our programming as you are able. Most importantly, thank you for your continuing support of RiverCenter. Our audiences are why we do what we do and we are forever grateful to you for being part of the RiverCenter experience! See you at the theatre.

THE RIVERDANCE IRISH DANCE TROUPE are world-class Irish dancers. They hail mostly from Ireland, but also from Britain, the United States, Canada and Australia. Between them, the dancers can boast of hundreds of championships won in Ireland and abroad. Most started dancing at three or four years of age at local dance schools and progressed to world championship level before being chosen to perform in Riverdance. The dancers would have known and competed against each other at various competitions, including the World Championships. Riverdance has given them the opportunity to perform together for the first time in a non-competitive way. The grace and eloquence of their soft-shoe dance and the power and precision of their hard-shoe routines clearly display the endless hours of practice and their dedication to the art of Irish Dance.

ALAN JAY LERNER (Book and Lyrics) wrote some of America’s best loved and enduring stage and movie musicals with Frederick Loewe over a period of more than 25 years: Life of the Party, What’s Up, The Day Before Spring, Brigadoon, Paint Your Wagon, My Fair Lady, Camelot and Gigi. He also wrote Love Life with Kurt Weill, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever and Carmelina with Burton Lane, Coco with Andre Previn, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue with Leonard Bernstein and Dance a Little Closer with Charles Strouse. He wrote the libretto and/or lyrics for the following films: An American in Paris, Gigi, The Little Prince, Royal Wedding and film versions of his plays. He wrote two books: The Street Where I Live and The Musical Theatre: A Celebration. During his life he received multiple Tonys, Oscars, Grammys and Golden Globes and a Kennedy Center Honor. Mr. Lerner died in 1986.
FREDERICK LOEWE (Music), a classically trained musician, wrote the scores for some of America’s most memorable musicals including My Fair Lady, Camelot, Brigadoon, Paint Your Wagon and Gigi. Among his most famous songs with lyricist- partner Alan Jay Lerner are “Almost Like Being in Love,” “I Could Have Danced All Night” and “Thank Heaven for Little Girls.” A musical prodigy, Loewe was born in Berlin in 1901 and, at 13, was the youngest piano soloist to play with the Berlin Philharmonic. His popular song “Katrina,” written when he was 15, sold more than a million copies across Europe. Struggling to find work on Broadway after arriving in the U.S. in 1924, Loewe worked at such odd jobs as cow punching, boxing and accompanying silent films on the piano. He wrote with several other lyricists until approaching Lerner at New York’s Lambs Club in 1942 about collaborating on a show—thus beginning one of Broadway’s most extraordinary partnerships. The recipient of multiple Tony and Academy awards, Loewe died in Palm Springs in 1988.

The Simon & Garfunkel Story chronicles the amazing journey shared by the folk-rock duo, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. It tells the story from their humble beginnings as Tom & Jerry to their incredible success as one of the best- selling music groups of the ‘60s to their dramatic split in 1970. It culminates with the famous “The Concert in Central Park” reunion in 1981 with more than half a million fans in attendance.
Using state of the art video projection, photos and original film footage, the show also features a full live band performing all of their hits, including “Mrs. Robinson” (featured in the 1967 film The Graduate), “Cecilia,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “Homeward Bound” and many more.
With more than 100 million album sales since 1965, Simon & Garfunkel’s perfect harmonies and songs that poignantly captured the times made them one of the most successful folkrock duos of all time. Over the years, they won 10 Grammy® Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. In 1977, their Bridge Over Troubled Water album was nominated at the 1977 Brit Awards for Best International Album. In 2003, Simon and Garfunkel were awarded a Grammy® Lifetime Achievement Award and the following year saw their “The Sound of Silence” awarded a Grammy® Hall of Fame Award.

The Peking Acrobats have been called "incredible," "breathtaking," "stunning," and "quite unbelievable," to quote but a few of the critics.
As a special treat for fans of The Peking Acrobats, this all-new production now features performers from The Shanghai Circus to create a very special Chinese Acrobatic extravaganza unlike any other!
The Peking Acrobats featuring The Shanghai Circus offers more than a glimpse into the fascinating traditions of the Orient. It consists of sensational Chinese acrobatics, comedy, balancing feats and much more. A truly Oriental spectacular and a show for all ages, the grace and precision of the acrobats are the triumph of years of dedicated training and discipline. Chinese acrobatics are, in fact, more than just a series of stunts. Most of these acts clearly demonstrate the achievement of perfection through finding harmony between mind and body –an ancient concept in the Orient. The art form has been transformed from its simple “folk art” roots to the spectacular entertainment event we see today by centuries of tradition.
Training to become one of the members of The Peking Acrobats and The Shanghai Circus begins at an early age. It is a family affair and begins almost before the child can walk. Those who watch their parents contort, leap, and sail through the air from the time they are able to see, obviously take it for granted that they will, in time, do the same – and they invariably do. Formal lessons and training begin at the age of five or six, when observation has already become a fantastic teacher.
There are three schools for the performing arts in China; the first specializes in Dance,
the second in Chinese Opera, and the third in Acrobatics. Here, the children spend some four hours each day, six days a week, going through their paces, so that by the time they reach the age of 15 or 16, their art has become a part of their daily lives and is virtually second nature. Many Chinese acrobats begin their professional careers around this time in their lives as, in China, young people are considered adults when they reach 16 years of age. Some acrobats, who master their craft at even younger ages, are considered professional performers by the time they are 12 or 13 years old, much like younger singing stars or actors here in the West.
Over the years, company members of The Peking Acrobats have toured throughout Europe, South and Central America, Southeast Asia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Monte Carlo, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, Israel and, of course, extensively in the United States. The tremendous response of the audience is a testament to the popularity of their unique brand of artistry, which transcends time to the delight of people of all ages!
The Peking Acrobats were featured performers at Dollywood theme park for five years. For this gala entertainment extravaganza, they were a part of the most elaborate stage show ever produced by the theme park, Dollywood’s Babes in Toyland! Dollywood is named for the famed country music singer Dolly Parton and is located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. The skill and grace of the Acrobats in these performances left audiences of all ages mesmerized, and a testament to their success was that they returned there year after year, by popular demand, to celebrate an oldfashioned family Christmas with their many fans in the Great Smoky Mountains!
The Peking Acrobats’ new partners, The Shanghai Circus, have been entertaining audiences of all ages for over thirty years in the United States including two six-week Broadway engagements. Recognized as being among the best acrobatic shows that introduces young people to the magic of theatre, these acrobats were awarded Best Variety Show in Branson, Missouri, due to their continual demonstration of the highest caliber of professional, trained athletes, jugglers and contortionists. Their acts often trace their origins to traditional harvest festivals down through the centuries. It is no wonder The New York Times reported, “The Shanghai Circus is providing entertainment in abundance!”
Each entertainer presents a range of demanding performances, most of them typifying the Chinese Circus and consisting of a refreshing alternative to the usual Western traditions. From the dangerous climbing chair stack high above the audience, about which The New York Times said, “these acrobats provide feats of circus art that reach breathtaking heights of skill.” And just when you think you have seen it all, the highly skilled-roller skating duo takes center stage with gravity defying feats of strength. All these and more surprises complete a marvelous and totally exciting evening for theatre-going “youngsters” from nine to ninety-two.
