A MESSAGE from our Director
Another great season of presenting global stars close to home begins! We are excited to offer something we believe will delight everyone.
From Trace Adkins, Grand Funk Railroad, and Keb’ Mo’ with Shawn Colvin in the majestic Heard Theatre, to the breathtaking a cappella artistry of the all-male ensemble Chanticleer in the intimacy of our Legacy Hall—along with a touch of jazz from the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra—live music lovers are sure to find something to enjoy this season. We will also bring you national tours of beloved Broadway musicals. Chicago, Ain’t Too Proud, Dear Evan Hansen, The Addams Family, and Mean Girls are sure to warm your hearts and lift your spirits with stories ranging from the hilarious to the inspirational. Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson will captivate us with his brilliant insights in An Astrophysicist Goes to the Movies, which promises to be an unforgettable evening.
The holiday season will be filled with delightful and thought-provoking experiences. The national tour of Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer launches from RiverCenter, and Christmas with C. S. Lewis comes to Legacy Hall with a charming and touching portrayal of this great thinker and author during the festive season. And don’t forget Christmas with The WAVE at RiverCenter’s Gingerbread Village. Come and revel in the delightful sights, scents, and sounds of the season.
Speaking of The WAVE, we are thrilled to offer three classic silent films accompanied by this amazing instrument. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, starring the great John Barrymore, will send chills down your spine, Sunrise will keep you on edge with suspense and romance, and you’ll roll with laughter watching Buster Keaton in Steamboat Bill Jr
From Tibetan monks creating a sand mandala to performances by the United States Navy and Air Force bands, we have more to offer than we can fit on one page. We hope you’ll join us often, as our work truly gains its value with you in the audience. We are proud to continue this decades-long tradition, made possible through the generous support of our members and sponsors. We look forward to welcoming you to RiverCenter!

DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (1920)
Adapted from the 1886 novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson and the 1887 stage play by Thomas Russell Sullivan.
SYNOPSIS
Set in late Victorian London, this silent horror masterpiece follows Dr. Henry Jekyll, a kind-hearted doctor by day and a conflicted scientist by night. Obsessed with the dual nature of mankind, Jekyll develops a potion that unleashes his evil alter ego, Mr. Hyde. As Hyde, Jekyll descends into debauchery and violence, growing more monstrous with each transformation. The battle between good and evil within him spirals out of control, pushing Jekyll toward irreversible ruin.
As his secret life unravels, those closest to him suffer, including his fiancée Millicent and her father, Sir George, who becomes suspicious of Jekyll’s ties to the mysterious Hyde. When Sir George confronts him, the dark side takes over in a shocking display of violence.
Trapped in a body he can no longer control, Jekyll faces a final, dramatic confrontation between his two selves. This film captures the timeless struggle between morality and temptation, inviting viewers to explore the darker aspects of human nature.

THE WAVE THEATRE ORGAN
On June 25, 2021, RiverCenter became the new home of an Allen GW IV digital theatre organ, a gift from Dr. Marie Jureit-Beamish through the Atlanta Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society (ACATOS). The history of theatre organs can be traced to entertainment venues in the mid-teens through the late 1920s, when entertainment across the country centered around silent movies and Vaudeville. During their heyday, thousands of movie houses depended on live musical accompaniment, providing the primary usage of the original theatre organs until the “talkies” – movies with sound – became mainstream in the early 1930s.
In the decades to follow, some organs were destroyed when their theatres were torn down, but some found their way into churches or private home installations. The American Theatre Organ Society was founded in 1955 to save as many of these instruments as possible. While there were originally several thousand theatre organs, today only a few hundred remain.
The Allen Organ Company of Macungie, PA is a world leader in the creation and manufacture of digital organs for churches, concert halls, theatres and private homes. In 1997, the company’s “Renaissance” technology changed the organ world, using digital technology to imitate pipe organ sound. In the distinctive world of the theatre organ, the model GW IV made history.
“GW” stands for George Wright the legendary organist who consulted with Allen technicians to create the instrument. RiverCenter’s GW IV has four keyboards with the equivalent voices of 33 ranks of pipes. The GW IV also features percussion (glockenspiel, xylophone, chimes, etc.) and “traps” (cymbals, snare drums, tambourines and castanets) making the GW IV the full equivalent of a large theatre pipe organ. The sound is amazing.
THE HISTORY OF RIVERCENTER’S ALLEN GW IV ORGAN
RiverCenter’s Allen GW IV was originally owned by South Florida pipe organ enthusiast Cal Jureit. Jureit purchased the Allen digital organ when a move to a new home could not accommodate the space required for his large Wurlitzer pipe organ that was installed in the upper floor of his previous home. Following her husband’s passing, Jureit’s wife, Dr. Marie Jureit-Beamish, decided to carry on Cal’s legacy and love of the theatre organ and began hosting a series of concerts in her home. As the former Director of Music at Principia College in Alton, IL, Dr. Juriet shared her passion for music through these “Jureit Musicale” concerts
presenting some of the finest theatre organists in the world, both in concert and in silent film presentations with theatre organ accompaniment (what the original theatre organs of the 1920s were intended to do).
After a second downsizing with Dr. Jureit-Beamish and her current husband, she began looking for a new home for the instrument. She contacted Ken Double, organist for Atlanta’s Fox Theatre, President of ACATOS, and frequent performer at the Jureit Musicales, to see if he could assist.
As Double tells the story: “It’s funny how one door closes, and another door opens. One initial potential for the organ was a church south of Atlanta, and it appeared that might be the new home. But a change of heart from church leaders opened another door, and in stepped RiverCenter Executive Director, Norm Easterbrook. Mr. Easterbrook and ACATOS have a relationship dating to Norm’s tenure at the Rylander Theatre in Americus, GA, home to a Moller theatre pipe organ.
Easterbrook acknowledges that the Allen GW IV’s digital technology and portable installation made it the perfect instrument for RiverCenter, allowing for use in all three of RiverCenter’s concert halls. “We are profoundly grateful for the gift of this theatre organ to RiverCenter. Really, it is a gift to the Columbus community and the surrounding region as it will delight audiences in whatever way it is presented here at RiverCenter. You can’t help but smile and feel good when you hear a theatre organ because they are just pure fun.”

EVENTS
Each season, several touring shows launch their first national performance from RiverCenter, bringing in more than $1.5 million to the Columbus economy. These shows arrive several weeks prior to the performance dates, to conduct pre-tour activities. The City of Columbus receives an enormous economic benefit from travel, hotels, restaurants, parking, and other businesses patronized by both cast and crew.
Aside from providing great entertainment, performance space, and support services for several area arts organizations, RiverCenter plays an important role in our local economy. As calculated by the Americans for the Arts Economic Impact Calculator, RiverCenter activities result in more than $6.2 million in economic activity. This supports 189 full-time equivalent jobs, represents over $5 million in local household income, and generates $95,040 in state an local government revenue.
If you are interested in strengthening the impact of RiverCenter, please contact our Director of Development, Amanda Donaldson, at 706-256-3653 or development@rivercenter.org, or visit our website at rivercenter.org.
