Proud sponsor of RiverCenter’s 2025-2026 Season

A MESSAGE from our Director

Dear Friends,

It is an honor to greet you for my very first season as Executive Director of RiverCenter for the Performing Arts. I am deeply grateful to the Columbus community for the warmth and generosity with which you have already welcomed me.

I also want to recognize Norm Easterbrook, whose leadership and vision helped to build RiverCenter into the remarkable institution it is today. We all thank him for his incredible service to the community and wish him the very best in his retirement.

The 2025–2026 season truly has something for everyone: Broadway’s hilarious The Book of Mormon, MOMIX’s stunning Alice, and the international phenomenon, Riverdance, bring unforgettable dance artistry to our stage. Music lovers will also enjoy the United States Army “Jazz Ambassadors,” the legendary rock band, Three Dog Night, as well as the Motown icons, The Miracles featuring Sydney Justin & The Delfonics with Wil Hart. Another wonderful musical show celebrated worldwide includes The Prague Philharmonia. Families will also be delighted by Ada Twist, Scientist & Friends and, of all things, The Stinky Cheese Man! High-energy percussive entertainment like Drumline Live! will keep us on our feet, while our own beloved WAVE Theatre Organ transports us through silent film classics, Phantom of the Opera, Safety Last, and The Mark of Zorro, and adds festive cheer to our free annual Christmas with The WAVE celebration.

In addition, there is The Choir of Man — a vibrant celebration of music, community and friendship that captures the very spirit of RiverCenter.

At RiverCenter we believe the Arts are a unifying force. We come together— across generations, cultures, and perspectives— to share in the joy and inspiration that the richness of live performance brings. The Arts remind us that together, with a lifted spirit, we are happier and therefore stronger.

To our generous donors and sponsors — thank you! Your invaluable support makes this season possible. I look forward to meeting all of you personally in the months ahead.

With gratitude and excitement,

The name “Nederlander” has been synonymous with great entertainment since 1912. A show business dynasty began when David T. Nederlander, a smart young businessman livingin Detroit Michigan, purchased a 99-year lease on the Detroit Opera House. In 1964, his son James M. Nederlander came to New York City and purchased the Palace Theatre on Broadway. His hard work, pioneering spirit and vision enabled him to build one of the largest privately held live entertainment companies in the world, including theaters in 32 cities across the United States and theaters in London.

Nederlander National Markets, a Nederlander Presentation based in Chicago, is one of the largest presenters of Broadway series and engagements across North America. Currently, they oversee subscription seasons in more than 20 cities throughout the country.

Nederlander continues the tradition of operating historic theatres, producing and presenting the best in theatrical and concert events, and innovating new ways to engage future generations of theatergoers.

Alice PROGRAM NOTE

Travel down the rabbit hole MOMIXstyle, with Moses Pendleton’s newest creation, ALICE, inspired by Alice in Wonderland. As Alice’s body grows and shrinks and grows again, MOMIX dancers extend themselves by means of props, ropes, and other dancers.

“We don’t intend to retell the whole Alice story,” he says, “but to use it as a takingoff point for invention. I’m curious to see what will emerge, and I’m getting curiouser and curiouser the more I learn about Lewis Caroll. I share his passion for photography and his proclivity for puns”.

The Alice story is full of imagery and absurd logic – before there was Surrealism, there was Alice. Alice is an invitation to invent, to let the imagination run wild. “Go Ask Alice”, sang Grace Slick in “White Rabbit” – she also said, “Feed your head”.

Pendleton continues, “You can see why I think Alice is a natural fit for MOMIX and an opportunity for us to extend our reach. We want to take this show into places we haven’t been before in terms of the fusion of dance, lighting, music, costumes, and projected imagery. Our puns are visual, not verbal. It’s not modern dance, it’s Momix – under the spell of Lewis Carroll, who was under the spell of Alice – who was still learning to spell.”

As with every MOMIX production, you never quite know what you are going to get. Hopefully, audiences will be taken on a journey that is both magical, mysterious, fun, eccentric, and much more. As Alice falls down the rabbit hole and experiences every kind of transformation, we invite you to follow her.

We see Alice as an invitation to invent, to dream, to alter the way we perceive the world, to open it to new possibilities. The stage is our rabbit hole, we welcome you to drop in!

ABOUT THE COMPANY

MOMIX, a company of dancer-illusionists founded and directed by Moses Pendleton, has been presenting work of exceptional inventiveness and physical beauty for more than 40 years. From its base in Washington, Connecticut, the company has developed a devoted worldwide following. In addition to stage performances, MOMIX has also worked in film and television, as well as corporate advertising, with national commercials for Hanes and Target, and presentations for Mercedes-Benz, Fiat, and Pirelli. With performances on PBS’s “Dance in America” series, France’s Antenne II, and Italian RAI television, the company’s repertory has been beamed to 55 countries. The Rhombus Media film of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition with MOMIX and the Montreal Symphony was the winner of an International Emmy for Best Performing Arts Special. MOMIX was also featured in IMAGINE, one of the first 3-D IMAX films released in IMAX theaters worldwide. MOMIX dancers Cynthia Quinn and Karl Baumann, under Moses Pendleton’s direction, played the role of “Bluey” in the feature film F/X2, and White Widow, co-choreographed by Pendleton and Quinn, was featured in Robert Altman’s movie The Company. With nothing more than light, shadow, fabric, props, and the human body, MOMIX continues to astonish and delight audiences on five continents.

WHO’S WHO IN THE COMPANY

MOSES PENDLETON (Artistic Director) has been one of America’s most innovative and widely performed choreographers and directors for over 50 years. He cofounded the groundbreaking Pilobolus Dance Theater in 1971 while still a student at Dartmouth College. Pilobolus shot to fame in the 1970s. By the end of the decade, he had begun to work outside of Pilobolus, performing in and serving as principal choreographer for the Paris Opera’s Intégrale Erik Satie in 1979 and choreographing the Closing Ceremony of the Winter Olympics at Lake Placid in 1980.

In that same year, he created MOMIX, with Alison Chase, which rapidly established an international reputation for inventive and often illusionistic choreography that pushes physical boundaries and defies imagination. The troupe has now been creating new work under his direction and touring worldwide forover four decades. Mr. Pendleton has also been active as a performer and choreographer for other companies.

He has worked extensively in film, TV, and opera, and as a choreographer for ballet companies and special events. He staged Picabia’s Dadaist ballet Relâche for the Paris Opera Ballet and the Joffrey Ballet, and Tutuguri, based on the writings of Artaud, for the Deutsche Oper Berlin. He created the role of the Fool for Yuri Lyubimov’s production of Mussorgsky’s Khovanschina at La Scala, choreographed Rameau’s Platée for the U.S. Spoleto Festival, and contributed choreography to Lina Wertmuller’s production of Carmen at the Munich State Opera. Mr. Pendleton has created new works for the Arizona Ballet and the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, and he teamed up with Danny Ezralow and David Parsons, both former MOMIX dancers, to choreograph AEROS with the Romanian National Gymnastics Team. Mr. Pendleton choreographed The Doves of Peace, featuring Diana Vishneva and 50 Russian ballerinas, for the Opening Ceremony of the 2014 Winter Olympics at Sochi.

Film and television work includes the feature film F/X2 with Cynthia Quinn, Moses Pendleton Presents Moses Pendleton for ABC ARTS cable (winner of a CINE Golden Eagle award), and Pictures at an Exhibition with Charles Dutoit and the Montreal Symphony, which received an International Emmy for Best Performing Arts Special in 1991. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. (1925)

SYNOPSIS

Originally previewed in Los Angeles in 1925, the film has gone through at least five different versions. With the advent of digital restoration, silent film screenings have become a new worldwide art form, with patrons experiencing what theatregoers experienced in the silent film era. Tonight’s performance will be screened in the latest Blu-ray restoration of the film, presented as it would have been in a classic movie palace with live theatre organ accompaniment by organist Ron Carter on RiverCenter’s newly installed WAVE Theatre Organ. Carter will be using all the special sounds and effects of THE WAVE to bring this classic thriller to life. Remember: silent films were never truly silent. If the musical score that Carter has developed makes you laugh, gasp and maybe even scream a little, that is as it should be.

The New York Times review declared, “Universal has turned out another horror. This newest of special films is probably the greatest inducement to nightmare that has yet been screened.” The plot involves Erik (Lon Chaney) an escapee from Devil’s Island, who lives in the dungeon and torture chamber under the Paris Opera House. After ten years in the dungeon, he falls in love with Christine (Mary Philbin), a singer in the opera chorus. He becomes her teacher, coaching her from behind a wall in her dressing room, and demands that she be made the star of the opera. Erik kidnaps Christine, taking her to his home across a subterranean lake in the sub-basements of the opera house. Raoul, Christine’s boyfriend, and a detective from the Paris secret police, attempt a rescue, but are stopped by the Phantom. We won’t give away the dramatic conclusion to this epic film!

ABOUT THE ORGANIST

He is the theatre organ consultant for Allen Organ Studios of Atlanta, and the House Organist for the Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theatre in Marietta, GA. He is past Chairman of the Board for Marietta’s Pops Orchestra, Symphony on the Square. Recently Ron was honored by the Mayor of Marietta as he proclaimed February 12, 2023, as Ron Carter Day in the City of Marietta for his contributions to the Strand Theatre and the Marietta community. Ron has served five churches in a part time capacity as organist/Choir Director for over 50 years and is currently part of a team of organists who play for worship services at Marietta First Baptist Church. ABOUT THREE DOG NIGHT

Iconic American band, THREE DOG NIGHT, now celebrating its 6th decade, boasts some of the most astonishing chart statistics in popular music with 21 consecutive Billboard Top 40 hits, including 3 #1 singles and 12 straight RIAA Certified Gold LPs.

Created in 1968 by Danny Hutton, the band was conceived with the intention of featuring three strong vocalists who can sing leads and also blend together in three-part harmony, all supported by a group of great rock musicians. This ultimately became Three Dog Night’s signature sound. From their debut eponymous album, Three Dog Night went on to release 12 gold albums and by 1975, driven by chart-topping songs like “One” “Easy to be Hard”, “Mama Told Me (Not to Come),” “Joy to the World”, “Black and White”, “Shambala” and others, the band had sold over 50 million records. During that time Three Dog Night also toured relentlessly, quickly ramping up from smaller venues to selling out stadiums, virtually establishing the modern concept of a “stadium tour”.

Hutton, a denizen of the Laurel Canyon and Sunset Blvd music scenes, was well established as a songwriter, producer and recording artist. He had several regional hits as a solo artist including “Roses and Rainbows” and was invited to join the Sonny and Cher tour, where he met Cory Wells, lead singer of the Enemys. They recruited the talented east coast doo-wop vocalist Chuck Negron to complete the sound. Initially the trio planned to work with Danny’s good friend and mentor, Brian Wilson, and record for the Beach Boys label Brother Records. Wilson had christened them “Redwood” and they began work on several tunes. However, that project was abandoned when the Beach Boys objected to Brian’s songs going to another band. After staging a showcase at Hollywood’s famous Troubadour and garnering the attention of various label heads, Hutton eventually signed the group to ABC Dunhill records. They sought out talented musicians to form their own self-contained band and chose the band’s name --Three Dog Night. The now famous moniker derives from the tale of outback hunters who sleep with their dingoes on cold nights, the coldest being a “three dog night”.

Working with the studio duo of Richie Podolor and Bill Cooper at American Recording, they resurrected and recreated songs of the best and mostly undiscovered new songwriters of that time including Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman, Elton John, Laura Nyro, Paul Williams and Hoyt Axton among many others. The band’s eclectic taste and arranging talents, combined with the ability to recognize and record hits in a distinctive style, resulted in

Three Dog Night dominating the charts for years, earning a Grammy nomination, performing at two Super Bowls and pervading American culture with its music ubiquitous on the radio and in film and television.

Three Dog Night continues to perform over 80 shows a year - thrilling multigenerational audiences by delivering those larger-than-life songs with customary impeccable harmonies over a hard-driving rock foundation.

This year, Three Dog Night will release Enter its first studio album in nearly 40 years. Again working with Bill Cooper from the original production team, Hutton and the band present a body of eclectic material, this time including songs penned by Hutton. The project was recorded at Canyon Hut studios, adjacent to the Hutton family’s house in Laurel Canyon that Danny purchased from shock-rocker Alice Cooper over 40 years ago.

THREE DOG NIGHT’s Top 40 Hits include;

“Mama Told M (Not to Come)”, “Joy to the World”, “Black and White”, “Shambala”, “Easy To Be Hard”, “An Old Fashioned Love Song”, “One”, “The Show Must Go On”, “Never Been To Spain”, “Eli’s Coming”, “The Family of Man”, “Liar”, “Celebrate”, “Out In The Country”, “Pieces of April”, “One Man Band”
