THE LITTLE MIRACLES TRUST

Information by Jadey Drury, Little Miracles Trust, New Zealand.

More than 5,000 premature babies are born each year in Aotearoa, New Zealand. That’s one baby arriving early every 90 minutes. For these pēpi and their whānau, the first days can be stressful and uncertain.

The Little Miracles Trust supports whānau with babies in neonatal care. The journey can be overwhelming, so the Trust helps make things easier, through care, comfort, and connection. We are a registered notfor-profit that currently operates across New Zealand, with teams in Auckland, Middlemore, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch, & Dunedin, and we’re constantly working to expand into more regions.

How It Works

The Trust provides and coordinates support to the whānau of premature and sick full-term babies as they journey through neonatal intensive care, transition home, and beyond.

Support includes:

• Care Packs on arrival to the unit.

• Morning teas to connect whānau and experts.

• Equipment for families to use in units.

• Post-discharge playgroups and coffee mornings.

How You Can Help

Your support goes further than you think. How you can help:

• Make a donation.

• Leave a legacy.

• Organise a fundraiser.

• Sew or knit for our pēpi.

Many parents and extended whānau choose to give back to, The Little Miracles Trust to acknowledge the support they received.

The first step is to connect with us so we can keep you in the loop with what’s happening locally and across the country. Every bit helps, whether it’s big or small.

Our Three Key Objectives

1. The Trust’s main focus is supporting parents through a traumatic time. Most of the team have had babies in one of New Zealand’s six NICUs and work to ease the stress faced by families with premature or ill babies. They visit parents to assess individual needs, from access to information to practical, financial, or emotional support.

2. The second aim of the Trust is to assist the NICUs and SCBUs in practical ways, such as purchasing or contributing to the cost of equipment and funding for staff to attend neonatal educational seminars or other professional development.

3. The third aim of the Trust is to aid neonatal-related medical research.

We assist units in practical ways, such as contributing to the cost of equipment or funding for staff to attend neonatal education and professional development opportunities.

Supporting Neonatal Research

We also fund and support medical research related to neonatal care.

The Manaaki Room, shown here, was created in Waikato NICU with the help of the Cambridge Lions for whānau needing a private space to hear and process difficult news. It offers a quiet place where families can come together for support and, when the time comes, spend meaningful moments with their pēpi away from others to say their goodbyes in their own way.

National Awareness Campaign: Neonatal November

Every November, we recognise the 5,000 babies and families who spend time in a Neonatal Unit (NICU or SCBU) each year through our national awareness campaign, Neonatal November, which also includes World Prematurity Day on 17 November, 2025.

We’ll be undertaking various activities to raise awareness of, The Little Miracles Trust and generate vital funds.

Volunteer support helps ensure this campaign is as successful as possible. We’re committed to “making a difficult start to life that little bit easier.”

Together, we can help make those first days easier for every pēpi and whānau. Get involved today because every little miracle deserves the best possible start.

THE RISE OF DUPES

Dupes.

You’ve undoubtedly heard of them, and if not, you’re probably not Gen Z (lucky you). Short for “duplicates,” dupes are products that mimic the look, style, or function of high-end items, usually at a fraction of the price.

Dupe culture isn’t exactly new. Consumers have always sought cheaper alternatives, but social media platforms like TikTok have supercharged the trend. Viral “dupe hauls” pit low-end against highend products, highlighting just how much you can save without sacrificing style.

What I appreciate about dupe culture is the transparency it’s sparked, finally challenging luxury brands that have long convinced us a $5,000 Louis Vuitton bag is worth every cent. I value honesty, so I’m all for exposing inflated price tags. But here’s where it gets tricky: while calling out overpriced luxury is fair game, the dupe wave also impacts small, independent brands, those working hard to create quality products with integrity.

When Kmart dropped a $38 version of Aje’s sold-out $525 Dione dress, I understood the hype. Saving $487? Tempting. But there’s a fine line between finding a bargain and unintentionally undermining the creativity and sustainability of brands like Aje.

Let’s be smart about what we support. There’s room for affordability and originality.

SEASONAL COLOUR PLAY

The Colour Combos You Didn’t Know You Needed

As winter wanes and spring begins to stir, now is the perfect time to play with colour. Think unexpected combinations, moodier hues paired with something light, hopeful, or even a little cheeky.

This seasonal shift offers the perfect canvas to layer colour in an intentional and refreshing way.

These are some of my favourite colour duos, thoughtfully chosen for their balance of warmth, coolness, depth & pop. Each combo offers contrast, character, & that little spark of “you’ve got great style” energy!

Pi nk

Words & Opinions: Kiris Megaw

Butter Yellow

Romantic, but grounded.

Try a burgundy coat over a blush knit, or pair pink tailored trousers with a wine-toned blouse.

• Perfect for: Layering tonal shades that still make a soft impact. Baby Blue

Playful, optimistic, and unexpectedly polished. Add a pale blue shirt under a yellow knit vest, or style a lemon-toned scarf with a denim jacket.

• Perfect for: Brightening grey days without going overboard.

Lil ac

Charcoal

Moody meets whimsical.

Start with a charcoal base, like wool trousers, a skirt or a coat and let lilac shine through in a knit, bag, or scarf.

• Perfect for: Office-to-outdoor layers that feel quietly creative.

Blu sh

Soft but strong.

This tonal pairing brings romance and refinement; think a raspberry coat layered over a blush turtleneck or a light satin blouse under a rich raspberry knit.

• Perfect for: A monochrome look with dimension.

Earthy and elevated.

Try butter yellow wide-leg pants or a skirt with a chocolate knit, or reverse it for a rich pop on top.

• Perfect for: Warm layers that still feel light and modern.

Burgundy

LAYERING: THE ART OF EFFORTLESS STYLE

Layering becomes your wardrobe’s best friend as the crisp mornings linger, as do the afternoons. It’s functional, stylish, and, when done right, effortlessly chic. Think simplicity with intention, texture with contrast, and a pop of colour when you least expect it.

Layering allows you to play with proportion, texture and tone without compromising comfort. Here’s how to get it right this season:

Start with the Base

• Ribbed cotton tanks or long sleeves.

• Lightweight turtlenecks in neutral tones (ivory, slate, tan).

• Fitted bodysuits, perfect for seamless layering.

• Add contrast and movement: A structured blazer, lightweight trench, or relaxed knit vest adds shape and interest.

• Finish with a pop: A coloured scarf, bold bag, or patterned sock peeking through a loafer adds personality without overwhelming your look.

Mid-Layers with Mood

This is where you build warmth and shape. Choose pieces that add texture without the bulk.

• Slouchy cardigans or cropped knits.

• A pop of soft colour, like butter yellow, pink, or baby blue.

• Waistcoats or vests (quilted or wool) for extra interest.

Clean, comfortable, and classic. Think of your base layer as the calm beneath the chaos. Words & Opinions: Kiris Megaw

The Top-Coat Moment

Make it count. Your outer layer is your first impression and final polish.

• Oversized trench or longline coat in classic tones.

• A statement jacket, plaid, leather, or pastel.

• Lightweight puffer or quilted shacket for those in-between days.

Why Depth Matters

Layering is more than just practical, it adds contrast, depth, and style with minimal effort. Here’s how to master it:

• Slip skirt + oversized knit + boxy blazer: Soft meets structured, matte meets glossy, a perfect blend of textures and silhouettes.

• Fine knits under tailored coats: Keeps things balanced and chic, adding instant polish.

Head-to-toe neutrals + bold accessory: A bright cross-body or scarf elevates the look and draws the eye.

• Creates Contrast: Soft vs. structured, matte vs. glossy.

• Builds Intrigue: Your outfit becomes more than just its pieces.

• Feels Intentional: Thoughtful layering stands out.

Depth gives your look that quiet wow factor, the kind that turns heads not because it’s loud but because it’s thoughtful. It’s the reason people ask, “How did you pull that together?” or assume it must be designer, even if it’s not. And the best part? It’s completely you.

Whether your style leans polished, playful, or perfectly pared-back. Layers are the secret to making it yours.

Less is more, but details matter. Choose layers that speak to your style. Add colour sparingly but deliberately. And above all, make sure you feel like you in what you wear, layered or not!

Achieving a Healthy Skincare Routine in Winter

Cold, dry air. Harsh winds. Indoor heating. Winter can be particularly unforgiving on our skin. External aggressors such as wind, cool temperatures and low humidity are heightened, so our skin requires extra support.

Our skin is the vital interface between our internal and external environments, constantly working to shield us from the outside world. In winter, however, lower humidity, warm, dry indoor air, and exposure to the elements, including wind and rain, can dehydrate the skin and compromise its barrier. The result? Increased dryness, sensitivity, and irritation.

To combat this, hydration, nourishment, & barrier support are key. We asked two everyday women, Brenda and Kiris, to share their personalised Emma Lewisham skincare routines, the perfect inspiration to guide your winter skin rituals.

Information by Emma Lewisham. Testing by Brenda Donaldson & Kiris Megaw.

“I massage it onto dry skin, then add water to create a milky emulsion before rinsing. It cleans properly without leaving my skin dry or itchy, just gentle and effective.”

For dry winter skin, it’s vital to use a cleanser that purifies without stripping. Our dual-phase Illuminating Oil Cleanser removes SPF, makeup, & impurities while preserving hydration.

2. Exfoliate (2–3x/week)

3. Serum (Everyday)

Supernatural Vitale Elixir (1-1.5 pumps to face & neck).

“I love the Vitale Elixir, because even know my fine lines are not hugely visible, I love the feeling of ‘getting on top of them early’ and the Instant plumping effects it has.”

Supernatural Vitale Elixir is a next-gen facial relaxant that smooths and plumps within 24 hours, helping reduce wrinkles and boost skin suppleness.

4. Protect (Everyday) ☀️ Sunceutical SPF 50 Mineral Face Crème

“As a sun-loving girl, SPF is a non-negotiable. This Mineral Crème smells divine, feels luxe, and clings just right, no grease, all glow. Honestly, try it.”

The final step, this SPF 50 Mineral Face Crème blends skincare & sun care. With 20% Zinc Oxide, it shields without greasiness or white-cast, while Niacinamide brightens and hydrates.

ONE POT WINTER WONDERS

When the temperature drops and the days feel shorter than ever, the last thing we want is to be stuck at the sink scrubbing multiple pans after dinner.

That’s where the magic of one-pot meals truly shine. They’re comforting, flavour-packed, and— best of all—they make clean-up a breeze!

@simone_anderson

More from Simone: Edition 6, Page 10.

As a mum, business owner, and content creator, life is full and fast-paced. But I still want to nourish my family (and myself!) with meals that feel indulgent without being complicated. That’s why I gravitate toward recipes that come together in one pot or pan, especially in winter. There’s something grounding about a simmering pot on the stove, the house filled with warm, spicy aromas, and dinner being only a few scoops away.

One of my favourite hacks? Cook once, eat twice (or even three times!). Doubling the recipe doesn’t take much more effort, but it means you’ve got backup meals ready for the week ahead, whether that’s dinner on a chaotic Tuesday night or lunch for work the next day. These dishes also reheat beautifully and freeze well. Future you, will be grateful when dinner is sorted with zero effort!

My biggest advice? Don’t overthink it. Keep things simple, play with flavours you love, and give yourself permission to enjoy the process (and the ease of it all). Winter doesn’t have to mean complicated meals or hours in the kitchen, just warm, nourishing food that feels like a hug in a bowl.

Why One Pot? Here’s Why I’m Obsessed

• Less Clean-Up: One pot = one dish to wash. Enough said.

• Layered Flavour: Cooking everything together helps ingredients absorb more flavour, creating deeper, richer dishes.

• Hands-off Cooking: Once everything is in the pot, you can often just let it do its thing—ideal when you’re juggling a million other things.

• Easy Meal Prep: Double the recipe and freeze half for an effortless meal later on.

One Pot Fakeaway Beef Panang Curry Serves: 2-4 By Simone Anderson

INGREDIENTS

- 8 Tbsp Panang curry paste.

- 1kg diced beef.

- 8 Tbsp peanuts, ground into a fine powder.

- 3 tsp fish sauce.

- 4 tsp neutral oil.

- 800ml coconut milk (plus extra to drizzle if you’re feeling fancy).

INSTRUCTIONS

- 10 makrut lime leaves, roughly torn.

- 3 tsp raw sugar.

- 1 red capsicum, thinly sliced.

- 2 carrots, thinly sliced.

- 1 onion, thinly sliced.

- Handful peanuts.

- Steamed jasmine rice to serve.

1. Mix the ground peanuts into the curry paste and set aside.

2. Add 1½ tsp fish sauce and oil to the beef, and massage it well. Let it soak up the flavour.

3. In a large pan over medium-high heat, reduce ¾ cup of the coconut milk until it thickens and starts to separate.

4. Stir in the curry paste and drop the heat to medium-low. Let it cook for a few minutes, stirring constantly.

5. Add raw sugar and torn lime leaves, and cook for another minute until the sugar dissolves.

6. Add the beef and toss it through the curry paste— break up the pieces as you go.

7. Once the beef is about 50% cooked, pour in the coconut milk and cook for a minute more. Turn off the heat.

8. Stir in your capsicum, carrot, onion, and the remainder of the fish sauce while the curry’s still hot (they’ll stay crisp but soak up the flavour).

9. Sprinkle over a handful of crushed peanuts for crunch.

10. Serve over fluffy jasmine rice with an extra drizzle of coconut milk and a few slivers of lime leaf if you’ve got them.

A SLOWER PACE OF LIFE FOR THIS KIWI MIDWIFE

From the birth room to the classroom. Midwife, Becca O’Leary’s is now empowering parents in a new way, through her antenatal education venture, My Little Kiwi.

For over seven years, Becca O’Leary lived life on-call. As a Lead Maternity Carer (LMC) midwife, her days and nights revolved around other people’s births.

She answered calls at all hours, dropped everything to attend labours, and poured her heart into walking alongside families through one of life’s most significant transitions. It was sacred work, but it was also relentless.

Behind the scenes, Becca was on a personal journey of her own. She faced infertility and underwent IVF, all while continuing to support others through the uncertainty of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Supporting people to birth their babies while longing for her own was emotionally complex but deepened her understanding of how much those moments matter.

When Motherhood Meets Midwifery

During this time, Becca became a mother, twice. She breastfed during postnatal calls and emailed urgent referrals while rocking her baby to sleep.

The line between midwife and mum often blurred. It was fulfilling but exhausting and eventually, something had to give.

She realised she couldn’t keep going at that pace. The early years with her children were precious and fleeting, and she didn’t want to miss them. It wasn’t about leaving midwifery but reshaping it to fit her family. That decision sparked the creation of My Little Kiwi, a new direction focused on what she loves most: education.

A New Chapter

Through My Little Kiwi, Becca now teaches online and in-person antenatal classes in Kirikiriroa (Hamilton). She blends clinical expertise with lived experience, creating a supportive and relatable environment for expectant parents.

She also works occasional shifts at a local birthing unit to stay hands-on without the 24/7 pressure. This slower pace has brought balance. Mornings now begin with coffee and cuddles, not phone calls and rushing out the door. She’s still supporting whānau in a way that honours her passion and her own family.

Impact, Redefined

Stepping back from traditional midwifery wasn’t easy. Like many in care-based roles, Becca had to redefine what it means to make an impact. “Midwifery isn’t just about catching babies,” she says. “It’s about walking alongside people, helping them feel informed, prepared, and supported.”

That’s exactly what, My Little Kiwi offers: practical, holistic, and evidence-based antenatal education that empowers parents to give birth and parent with confidence.

Becca’s warm, down-to-earth approach has quickly made My Little Kiwi a trusted resource for families across Aotearoa.

Expecting a baby?

My Little Kiwi offers:

• In-person antenatal classes in Hamilton.

• Self-paced online antenatal course.

• Evidence-based, relatable education for every birth journey.

Hello,

I’m Minty, the one who holds the paintbrush for Felice Paintworks. I have a unique blend of skills and experiences that have ultimately lead me to where I am today. I gained a bachelor degree in Dental Hygiene & Therapy in 2010 and then shifted to Australia to live with my husband.

After having two children and experiencing postnatal depression my path took an unexpected but deeply transformative turn. I found solace and healing in creativity and resonated with the quote “The opposite of depression isn’t joy, its expression.”

In 2023 I completed a diploma in Interior Design to help me with a full house renovation in Tamahere, Hamilton. I found it very difficult to find affordable large scale artwork, so I picked up a paintbrush and began painting. My belief is everyone should be able to enjoy the uniqueness of an original painting!

About my Art

I am an Artist and Interior Designer with a deep appreciation for nature’s raw beauty.

I enjoy working with fluid acrylic, pigments and ink with a hint of some fun sciency stuff to complete my unique look.

My work is organic, earthinspired, that evokes the intricate textures and patterns of rocks, shells and tree bark.

When allowing the paint and pigments to move freely over the linen canvas, they embrace the natural flow of nature, and the use of metallic paints subtly enhances the pieces by mimicking the delicate mineral veins found in nature.

With a preference for neutral tones and organic aesthetics my art bridges the world of fine art and interior design, bringing a sense of grounded elegance to any space. @felice.paintworks

A Season of Big Moves and

Bold Milestones

From living room beginnings to a bustling new warehouse and soonto-open retail store, Frankton’s own Bear & Moo is stepping into a transformative season.

Known for its sustainable parenting products and punchy prints, the beloved brand is celebrating a trifecta of achievements: a new winter range, a fresh warehouse space, and its very first store, opening in Hamilton this June!

Frankton-born and family-loved, Bear & Moo is stepping into its biggest chapter yet. The parenting brand, known for practical, sustainable products and punchy prints, is celebrating a trifecta of milestones — a brand-new winter range, a larger warehouse, and its first-ever retail store, opening in Hamilton this June 2025!

Set to welcome customers at 1 Glennis Place, Frankton, on June 25, the store marks a significant moment for founder Hannah Porter and her closeknit team. What began seven years ago in Porter’s living room as a mission to make cloth nappies more accessible and affordable for Kiwi families has now grown into a thriving business with over 44,000 customers, a $3.2 million annual turnover, and a loyal social media following.

“We’ve had so many people turn up to our warehouse over the years thinking it was a store,” says Porter. “It’s something customers have wanted for a long time, and this year felt like the right moment. The new space still feels like ‘us’ — it’s just down the road from where we started and means people can now touch, feel, and try products before buying.”

The new retail location will stock Bear & Moo’s full range, including its signature reusable cloth nappies, a core product that continues to gain popularity as families look for costeffective, eco-conscious options.

With the rising cost of living, many parents are revisiting reusable solutions, and Bear & Moo’s cloth nappies provide significant savings over time without sacrificing style or ease of use.

This month also saw the launch of Bear & Moo’s bright and bold May 2025 winter collection, which showcases the brand’s flair for combining function with fun. “We always stick with the prints that families love,” Porter says.

“Our ginghams are classics, our farm prints are always a hit, and this time we’ve added some vibrant options for older kids, plus the super cute ‘Love Bugs’ in on-trend pink and red.”

Prints like Stop for Construction, Barnyard, Busy Bees, and Too Cool are already proving popular, and this drop marks the first time Bear & Moo has released its bestselling Day Bags in every print, a move prompted by customer demand. “We just can’t keep Day Bags in stock,” laughs Porter.

“Parents are using them for daycare, outings, and nappy changes; they’re so versatile, and now everyone can get their favourite print.”

Also proving popular are the brand’s Sleeved Bibs and Messy Mats, ideal for babies starting solids and messy play activities like water play, painting, or playdough. “These are the kinds of products that make daily parenting that little bit easier,” says Porter.

“And when they come in prints that make kids smile, it’s a win-win.”

The winter range launch follows Bear & Moo’s move into a larger warehouse, still based in Frankton. “It’s been a big few months,” Porter reflects. “We’ve expanded our team and moved into our new premises, and now we’re preparing to welcome people into the store. It’s not just about sales - it’s about connection.”

From a mum with a vision to a thriving local business, Bear & Moo is showing what’s possible with community, creativity, and a whole lot of heart!

Visit the store from 25 June 2025 at 1 Glennis Place, Frankton, or shop the full range online anytime at, www.bearandmoo.co.nz.

How To:

Prepare Your Home For Photos

Before a buyer sets foot through the front door, they’ve likely already toured your home - with a swipe of the screen!

In today’s digital-first property market, professional photography is more than a finishing touch. It’s a powerful tool that can ignite interest, drive competition and elevate your sale price.

A beautifully presented home speaks volumes. It tells a story of care, elegance and lifestyle - the kind of home that captures attention and lingers in the minds of potential buyers long after they’ve clicked away. With a little thoughtful preparation and an eye for detail, your home can shine in every frame, inviting buyers to picture their future within its walls.

Make It Inviting

Create a sense of warmth and welcome from the moment someone views your home!

- Open all curtains to let in natural light.

- Turn off the television.

- Fluff cushions and tidy out-of-place items.

- Remove pet bowls and toys.

- Add a pop of colour with fresh flowers or fruit.

- Ensure beds are crisply made.

- Clear all rooms of clothing and clutter.

- Fold towels neatly and either hang or store them out of sight.

Show That It’s Loved

A clean home not only photographs better but also signals that it’s been cared for.

- Vacuum and mop all floors.

- Wipe down all surfaces.

- Polish mirrors and glass until streak and watermark-free.

- Dust skirting boards, fans, and light fixtures.

- Clean pendant lights, they shine as standout features in photos.

Remove Clutter

Minimal surfaces help buyers focus on the space, not the stuff.

- Clear away beauty products, excess magazines, and paperwork.

- Ensure the kitchen is spotless, especially bench-tops and fridge doors.

- Remove unnecessary items to avoid visual clutter.

- Style with a few well-chosen pieces, too much can look busy on camera.

Curb Appeal

The exterior of your home is just as important as the interior.

- Mow lawns and tidy garden beds.

- Store away hoses, tools, and other clutter

- Remove moss, mould, and cobwebs from outdoor areas.

- Style outdoor furniture to highlight lifestyle appeal.

- Trim hedges, rake leaves, and tidy paths and driveways.

Before the Photographer Arrives

On the day of the shoot, take a final walk-through.

- Open windows to let in fresh air.

- Turn on lights in darker corners.

- Make final tweaks to cushions, throws, or decor.

- Prepare the home as if hosting a guest, but this time for your future buyer!

A well-staged home photographs beautifully, and beautiful photos lead to greater interest, stronger offers and, often, a faster sale.

By taking the time to prepare, you’re not just selling a property, you’re presenting someone’s future dream home.

Q&A

From Passion to Purpose: A Conversation with Jadey Drury

With nearly two decades in the hairstyling industry, JDH has transformed her love for creativity and connection into a thriving business that empowers women to feel like the best version of themselves, whether in the salon or on their wedding day.

In this heartfelt Q&A, Jadey shares her journey from studying law to styling bridal shoots, the inspiration behind her work, her passion for community, and how she balances business with motherhood.

Get to know the woman behind the chair, her advice, her heart, and what’s next for JDH!

Can you share your journey into the hairstyling industry?

Almost 20 years ago, I had just left school. I was studying Business and Law, but I recognised quickly that I needed to be using the creative parts of my brain. The following year, I started studying Hairdressing. I think the people around me might have been disappointed with my choices, but my heart was telling me that I needed a break from a typical learning environment, and I stand by the fact it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. It’s allowed me to travel the world, see some of the most amazing places and connect with many incredible people. It’s allowed me flexibility whilst having my family, having my own business, and being my own boss.

What inspired you to specialise in weddings and special events?

I just loved magazines as a child, and I still do now; I wanted to make people look like that as part of my job every day! I did some in-salon training in the UK, and then I threw myself in at the deep end; the more education I invested in, the more I loved that world. When I started to travel, I saw so much connection in weddings and special events, and I was eager to take the leap.

When we settled in NZ, I was invited to be the stylist for a couple of bridal shoots, and all of a sudden, people were asking me to do their weddings after seeing the photos; it was a natural progression in my career, whilst weddings can be quite high-pressure environments, I genuinely love the whole service from start to finish, quite often the brides we meet become regular clients and it’s a real privilege to be part of someone’s special day. QUESTIONS - BRENDA DONALDSON ANSWERS - JADEY DRURY

What does a service look like in the salon for you these days?

These days, a day in the salon, for me, is all about creating a calm, luxurious experience where my clients feel genuinely cared for. I offer a tailored service to each individual, ensuring they feel heard, understood, and in safe hands. With years of experience and deep knowledge in the industry, I focus on delivering beautiful results and a sense of comfort and trust from the moment they walk in. It’s about more than just the service. It’s about the experience and my clients truly feeling like part of the family.

How do you ensure a client or bride feels empowered and confident?

I ensure each client, whether it’s a bride on their wedding day or a client I see every six weeks, feels empowered and confident by taking the time to understand their vision, personality, and what makes them feel their best. It’s not just about the hair or makeup, and it’s about how they feel in the process. I create a calm, supportive environment where they feel heard and valued. My goal is to always enhance their natural beauty, to make them feel radiant, confident, and completely themselves.

What are some of your most rewarding experiences working with brides or clients for their significant events?

Honestly, the people I meet and the look on their faces when they look in the mirror will never get old! When people I meet as a one-off reach out to see me regularly, it is one of the most rewarding parts. Besides being able to give back to the community, my wonderful clients and their support of my business is another big one for me.

How do you incorporate community support or local initiatives into your hairstyling business?

I always set some business goals after the financial year to give back; it’s really important to me. My grandparents always taught me to give where possible because you never know when you might need to receive. Last year, we donated a full bridal package to someone in our community, one group education session, five salon colour services, sent out two care packages to families in their times of need and helped my children’s school get their garden to table project up and running, with time and recourses. This isn’t a corporate business, but where we can help, we will. We have some big community goals for 2025/26!

What are some trends you’re currently seeing in wedding hairstyles, and how do you adapt them to fit individual clients?

I love this question! Lots of hair up, which is perfect for big days; you know they will still look flawless on the dance floor at the end of the night! Curls still have a place, but we are seeing more fun and less structure. Finding out what gives the client confidence and what doesn’t is key when adapting styles. It’s about reading body language and really listening to ensure they’re happy with the final result.

What advice would you give someone hesitant about trying a new hairstyle for a big event?

If you have time book in for a preview ahead of your event, it’s a great way to be sure you will feel your best self on the day. Sometimes though it’s about just doing it. If you have a good stylist, they should steer you in the right direction of what will or won’t suit you, and your hair type.

What message do you hope to convey to women through your work in hairstyling?

What I hope to share with women through my work is that beauty isn’t about fitting into trends or expectations; it’s about feeling like the most honest version of yourself. When I work with someone, I’m not trying to change them, I’m helping them see what’s already there. I want every client to leave my chair feeling like themselves but even more confident and comfortable in their own skin. That’s the real power of hairstyling: helping people reconnect with who they are!

How do you balance all of the demands?

I thrive under pressure, I have my ADHD to thank for that!  I was diagnosed almost two years ago and suddenly, the many hats I had created for myself throughout my life made sense. My brain needs to be busy, and I am all in if I commit to something. I couldn’t do what I do without my husband, and I think he is probably the only person who truly understands how my brain works. It’s essential for me that our children see that things don’t come easily and that you have to work hard in this life.

Who inspires you in the industry?

That’s a tough one; we are always about supporting our community in this hair world; Sophie, a dear friend of mine who owns LHC, is an absolute inspiration; anyone who has the pleasure of knowing her will know exactly what I mean! Robyn Munro from Robyn Munro Hair is one of the most talented people I have ever met. She has taught me much about what I know in the bridal world. My ride-or-die Jayde, who owns Beauty With Jayde, many know her as the brow queen of Hamilton, she is the Yin to my yang.

I’m forever grateful for her constant cheerleading and ability to keep things real! Working for yourself can sometimes be lonely; I can honestly say that in business, if you don’t find your community with whom you can bounce ideas around and trust their advice, times can get really hard, really fast.

Future goals for JDH?

Looking ahead, our goals are about growth for myself and the people I connect with. I want to continue creating a space where clients feel uplifted, understood, and empowered whenever they sit in my chair. I’m also passionate about building stronger connections within my local community through collaborations with other small businesses, offering workshops, or supporting local events. I am interested in our world, our sustainability and the ability to work with anyone, anywhere with today’s technology, so watch this space!
