Q&A

From Morrinsville to the World: Emma Lewisham on Beauty with Purpose

Born and raised in Morrinsville, Emma Lewisham has built a globally acclaimed skincare brand that’s redefining luxury through science and sustainability. Recently recognised as B Corp's highest rated luxury skincare company globally in the Personal Care Products category!

Emma shares with Brenda and Kiris how her Waikato roots, deep curiosity, and unwavering commitment to innovation continue to shape her skin-first philosophy and the future of conscious beauty.

You grew up on a farm in Morrinsville, what did you love most about growing up on the farm, and how do you think that upbringing has influenced the way you approach your life and business today?

I grew up in Morrinsville and lived there until I was about ten or eleven. My dad worked for MAF as a livestock officer, and we did a lot of sharemilking when I was young, so I have so many fond memories of that time, waking up at 4:30 in the morning, going out to get the cows in, and spending time on the farm with him. I absolutely loved it.

There’s something so special about those simple moments, being outdoors, surrounded by animals, the land, and that slower pace of life. Growing up in that environment really instilled a deep sense of humility, hard work, kindness, and appreciation for nature.

It taught me that nothing is beneath you, that you roll up your sleeves, give things a go, and stay tenacious. Those values have stayed with me throughout my life and have been critical to everything I’ve achieved today, as a businesswoman, and now as a mother too.

QUESTIONS - BRENDA

DONALDSON & KIRIS MEGAW

ANSWERS - EMMA LEWISHAM

I was definitely a bit of a tomboy growing up, we all were! Really sporty, never wore makeup or thought about skincare. My grandparents also owned farms, so that lifestyle has always been part of our family. Looking back, I’m really grateful for that upbringing; it kept me grounded and taught me what truly matters. I wish more young girls today could experience that same kind of simplicity.

Favourite things about the Waikato?

My favourite thing about the Waikato would have to be the people, they’re so down-to-earth, real, and authentic. There’s such a focus on what really matters in life. I also love the lifestyle, the beaches, the farmland, and the nature that surrounds the region. It’s all so wholesome and nourishing, just full of the good stuff.

Whenever I go back, it always takes me straight back to my childhood, to that sense of simplicity and innocence. I have such fond memories of growing up in Morrinsville, going to David Street Primary, and just having the best time. I absolutely loved my teachers, my school, and that chapter of my life. It was such a special time.

INGREDIENTS

Growing up on a farm naturally gives you an appreciation for the land and how things are produced. What key ingredients feature in your range, and are they sourced primarily from within New Zealand or internationally?

Our formulations always start from a deep understanding of how the skin actually works, which might sound obvious, but it’s not the standard in skincare. Many brands anchor their products around one core ingredient, whereas we begin by understanding how we want to interact with the skin and what actions we want to achieve.

From there, we source ingredients, whether from New Zealand or internationally, that can truly deliver on those results. Ultimately, our focus is on performance and efficacy, so we look globally for the most, advanced,

scientifically proven ingredients. Some of our actives are developed in leading labs in Germany and Japan. In many cases, we’re among the first to bring these innovations to market.

We’ve really moved beyond traditional ingredients like Rosehip Oil, to incorporate next-generation compounds such as peptides that sit at the intersection of nature and science.

That said, New Zealand still plays a huge role in what we do. We work with incredible local manufacturing partners who share our values, people who are hard-working, solutions-driven, and truly collaborative. And of course, my New Zealand roots will always be at the heart of the brand.

We wouldn’t be where we are today without the support of our local communities and the springboard that New Zealand has given us. It’s home, and I love that we’ve been able to build something here that competes and often exceeds what’s being done on the global stage. I think as New Zealanders, we sometimes underestimate just how capable we are. We’re innovative, we’re curious, and we make things happen.

SKIN PHYSIOLOGY

Your team talks about a “skin-first” formulation philosophy, where you essentially let the skin speak before creating a solution. Can you walk us through what that process looks like?

Our entire approach starts with the skin. My background is in technology, and that really shaped how I think, it taught me to always put the problem at the centre. So, before we ever begin formulating a

product, we start by asking: what’s the concern we’re trying to solve? Whether it’s hyperpigmentation, acne, or fine lines. We dive deep into understanding what actually creates that condition on the skin, what triggers it, what systems are at play, and how they’re all interconnected.

We’ll literally map this out on a whiteboard, almost like the Da Vinci Code of skin, tracing how one pathway affects another and what needs to be unlocked to create change. Skin is incredibly complex and intelligent; you can’t just apply one ingredient and expect transformation. You need to work in synergy with it, which is why our formulas use up to 24 active ingredients. Each one plays a specific role, but their real power comes from how they work together across multiple layers of the skin.

This process completely flips the traditional model on its head. Instead of chasing trends or buzzy ingredients, everything we do is grounded in truth, science, and innovation. That’s why our results speak for themselves, our customers see genuine change, they repurchase, and our retail partners see that performance reflected in their numbers.

At the end of the day, I think that’s been our biggest success. It’s not about great marketing; it’s about creating revolutionary, natural, and scientifically rigorous products that deliver real results, while still feeling luxurious, enjoyable to use, and accessible.

Our goal is to give people that ‘spa-like’ experience at home, but in a way that fits into their everyday life. We know everyone’s busy, so we’ve concentrated

that level of performance and care into each product. Hand on heart, I know that when someone buys an Emma Lewisham product, they’re getting exceptional value, incredible results, and something made with genuine thoughtfulness, ethics, and integrity.

What kind of timeframe does it usually take to bring one product to life?

It’s definitely a long and intricate process. The first stage is all about solving the problem & that’s not always straightforward. It can take a lot of thinking, conversations with international scientists, & reviewing scientific journals before we even start formulating. We work out how to achieve the right actions in the skin, rather than starting with ingredients. Everything we do is entirely bespoke, including the textures & creams, which are created in-house & often develop entirely new textures that haven’t existed before.

Some products might take a year, while others take much longer. For example, our Supernatural Vitale Elixir - which is a natural alternative to Botox and one of MECCA’s top-performing serums - took three years to develop and test.

Would it be different because everyone has different skin types, i.e. Dry or mature skin, does that make a difference in your formulations?

We don’t buy into the idea of different skin types. When you truly understand the skin’s physiology, it naturally balances itself. So rather than formulating for dry, oily, or sensitive skin, our products are designed to bring all skin into harmony, healthy, balanced, and resilient. And of course, we obsess over

texture and feel. If it’s not perfect, we simply won’t release it.

Can you tell us about the collaboration between your in-house team and the formulation chemists who’ve previously worked with Dior? How do you ensure that luxury and efficacy meet science at every stage?

The process is very collaborative. We do a lot of the initial thinking and the science, internally; we actually have in-house physiologists & scientists, which is quite unique for a skincare brand. Typically, you’d just have cosmetic chemists, but having physiologists means we really understand how the body and skin work.

So a lot of the early formulation thinking happens within our team, mapping, researching, and developing initial samples and textures.

When it’s time to scale up, complete stability testing, and take it through to production, that’s when we collaborate with our external cosmetic chemists, including those who’ve worked with brands like Dior.

Balancing luxury and efficacy with science is absolutely one of the hardest parts, and that was really the gap I saw eight years ago. Luxury skincare didn’t always live up to its claims, and natural products, while better for us, often lacked that sensory, luxurious experience. They didn’t feel or smell beautiful, and they weren’t backed by scientific rigour.

I wanted to change that by creating natural products that are scientifically advanced, luxurious to use, and genuinely effective. And I believe we’ve achieved that.

We’re told this by leading retailers like Net-a-Porter, Harrods, Liberty, and MECCA, that our products are truly revolutionary and fill a space, that no one else had. And importantly, our formulations are safe for all life stages, including pregnancy and during cancer treatment, because of the quality and integrity of the ingredients we use, "why shouldn’t safe, natural products also be luxurious and high-performing?"

Skin naturally changes with age and even between seasons. How does your range support those fluctuations and can people still see great results using just a few core products rather than the full set?

Yes, absolutely. Our formulations are designed in harmony with how the skin truly functions – including its changing needs and processes throughout the day and night, and its natural circadian rhythms. We also consider how the skin adapts with the seasons, supporting it through fluctuations in climate, hydration, and environmental stress. So for example, this means some of our products are richer and more nourishing, making them ideal for winter when the skin requires extra support and protection. But honestly, a simple, consistent routine using just a few key products can take you through those natural seasonal shifts really well. And beyond that, "i think it’s important to remind people not to fixate on having perfect skin".

Our philosophy is about helping you achieve the best version of your own skin to feel confident and comfortable in it, rather than trying to erase every imperfection. True beauty, I believe, comes from who you are, how you treat

others, and the joy and kindness you bring into the world. That’s what really shines through.

You recently brought your skin-first philosophy to life at Australian Fashion Week through your partnership with luxury label Beare Park and makeup artist Isabella Schimid. How did that collaboration come about, and what did it mean to see your products on the runway in such a global, high-fashion setting?

Australia is such an important market for us, and with the launch of our new Sunceutical SPF 50 Mineral Glow Serum, which delivers sun protection, skincare benefits, and a luminous tint all in one, we wanted to show how it allows people to feel confident in their natural skin.

Partnering with Beare Park felt like a really natural fit. I have a great relationship with Bella, the founder, and together with Isabella Schimid, we created a “skin-first” runway look - radiant, polished, but completely foundation-free. Seeing that moment come to life was incredible. I remember watching the models walk and thinking, “We’ve achieved it - beautiful, healthy skin that truly glows on its own.”

It was such a proud and affirming moment for our whole team, and really brought the philosophy behind the brand full circle.

A SPARKLING PIECE OF HISTORY: THE RETURN OF TE AROHA MINERAL WATER

Reviving a Kiwi classic that predates Lemon & Paeroa by nearly two decades.

tearohamineralwater.co.nz

rrevell@tamineralwater.co.nz

A Natural Wonder with a Rich Past

Long before it became a refreshing beverage, the water of Te Aroha was known for something extraordinary, its healing powers. Flowing naturally from the ground hot, mineral-rich, and naturally carbonated, this unique spring has been treasured for centuries.

The local iwi were the first to recognise its restorative properties, using the waters for both drinking and bathing.

By the late 1800s, Te Aroha had become New Zealand’s biggest spa town, attracting visitors seeking rejuvenation from the country’s only hot soda-water geyser, the only one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, if not the world.

“Our water is chemical-free and tastes just like what water should taste like, pure.”

Before Lemon & Paeroa, There Was Lemon & Te Aroha

The story of Lemon and Te Aroha dates back to 1887, an impressive nineteen years before Lemon & Paeroa first appeared.

Over the years, the spring passed through several owners, including Coca-Cola, who eventually closed the Te Aroha site after purchasing both brands, choosing to continue with the Paeroa spring.

Today, the water used for Lemon & Paeroa no longer comes from its original source. But in Te Aroha, the spring remains, and thanks to passionate new owners, this historic Kiwi drink has been brought back to life.

Reviving a Kiwi Classic

Reintroduced to the market just over two years ago, Te Aroha Mineral Water began humbly at farmers markets and cafés, before expanding into Foodstuffs stores, health food shops, and restaurants across the country.

The current range includes:

- Sparkling Mineral Water.

- Still Mineral Water (with the bubbles gently released).

- Lemon & Te Aroha — available in 330ml glass bottles and now cans.

Each drink comes from our naturally carbonated water that is packed full of natural minerals and chemicalfree, offering the smooth, refreshing taste that reminds people of what beverages used to be, simple, pure, and uncommercialised.

“People tell us it tastes like what drinks used to taste like, before they became too commercialised.”

Where to Find It

- Online on our website.

- On Upstock and through Bidfood wholesalers.

- In your local Grocery Store (just ask your local store to stock it!).

- At select cafés, bars, and restaurants across the Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Hawke’s Bay, Palmerston North, New Plymouth, and Auckland.

And of course, we'll be pouring samples and sharing stories at the National

Fieldays at Mystery Creek, inside 'The Pantry', in June 2026.

A Refreshing Future

Te Aroha Mineral Water is more than a beverage, it’s a revival of New Zealand heritage.

From its geothermal beginnings to its renewed life on Kiwi shelves, the brand represents a deep respect for purity, sustainability, and timeless flavour.

Because sometimes, the best things don’t need reinventing, they just need rediscovering.

“We’re bringing back what water should taste like, pure, natural, and full of life.”

Transform Your Bedroom into a Cozy Retreat with These Easy Styling Tips

Ah, summer! It's a season that radiates joy and relaxation, and your bedroom deserves to bask in that glow too.

If your space feels a bit weighed down or stuck in winter's chill, now is the ideal moment for a refreshing update. With light, airy textures and uplifting accents, you can effortlessly transform your bedroom into a charming retreat that celebrates the spirit of summer.

Let's embrace the season and make your space feel vibrant and inviting!

Embrace Light & Airy Linens

Summer is here, and nothing captures its essence like fresh, breathable linen!

It's the perfect time to trade in heavy quilts and knits for lightweight fabrics that enhance airflow and create a serene, laid-back vibe.

Embrace soothing neutrals like sand, white, and oatmeal for a tranquil retreat.

For a touch of seasonal warmth, consider soft stripes and sun-kissed shades like sage, sky blue, or terracotta. Feel free to get creative, mix and match pillowcases or layer a flat sheet under a light cover to achieve that luxurious boutique-hotel experience at home!

Renew with Subtle Statement Pieces

Transforming the mood of your space doesn't require a complete furniture overhaul, just a few thoughtful updates can create a remarkable impact!

Think about refreshing your bedside tables or lamps with textured materials like natural timber, rattan, or ceramic; these are ideal for the new season. Choose a curved or sculptural form to add delightful visual interest without overwhelming the room.

If your walls feel empty, consider hanging a single framed artwork to elevate the energy. Coastal landscapes, abstract shapes, or vibrant still-life prints can beautifully infuse your home with personality and warmth. Let's embrace these small changes for a big difference!

Add Life with Fresh Florals

Summer blooms are a joy that deserves a place indoors! A vase filled with Gypsophila, Roses, Dahlias, or Hydrangeas adds a touch of earthy elegance. Position them on your bedside, dresser, or windowsill, and brighten your everyday moments with their beauty.

Appeal to the Senses

Enhance your space with delightful scents and inspiring stories! Lighting a candle with a fresh botanical or citrus aroma brings a wonderful charm, especially in the cozy glow of evening.

Surround yourself with a collection of beautiful magazines on your bedside or bench, inviting moments of relaxation. With a few thoughtful touches, your bedroom can transform into a sunlit sanctuary, perfect for enjoying leisurely mornings and inviting warm nights.

Embrace the joy of creating a peaceful retreat!

We’re proud to stand alongside you and call this place home, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

TO: FROM: Reader Sally, Riverside Adventures

What do we love most about the Waikato? Honestly, where do we start! We’re lucky to be nestled between the mighty awa and the stunning maunga, with trails, rivers, and nature right on our doorstep. IN-CONVERSATION WITH EMMA LEWISHAM, CONTINUED

SUSTAINABILITY

On October 29, Emma Lewisham achieved a record-breaking B Corp score of 121, up from 90, making it the highestrated luxury skincare company globally, in the Personal Care Products category. Congratulations on that incredible achievement, which reflects significant improvements across governance, workers, environment, and customers.

QUESTIONS - BRENDA

DONALDSON & KIRIS MEGAW

ANSWERS - EMMA LEWISHAM

Can you share what’s been happening behind the scenes to reach this level of impact?

From day one, sustainability for me has always meant being a considerate, responsible, and ethical business, not just a company that ticks boxes. You can’t separate a brand’s values from its founders or leaders; they’re one and the same.

So for us, it’s never been about being the most sustainable brand; it’s simply about doing the right thing.

A lot of industries have operated a certain way for so long that it’s become normalised, even when those practices aren’t right. I’ve always been someone who questions the status quo, even as a child, I was the one constantly asking “why?” My dad encouraged that curiosity, and I think that mindset has carried through to how we run the business today.

"Achieving a B Corp score of 121 wasn’t about working backwards from a certification, it’s the result of years of small, everyday decisions that reflect our values." It’s in the 1% improvements: removing unnecessary plastic from packaging, reducing air freight by setting up international warehouses, choosing

ethical suppliers, ensuring fair working conditions, and being thoughtful about every material, ingredient, and process.

We’re not perfect, and I don’t claim that we are, but we’re genuine in our intent and always striving to be better. I think that comes down to those old-fashioned values I grew up with, like on the farm, where you respect the land that supports you. You take care of it, and it gives back. That reciprocity guides how I see business too, we have a responsibility to give back more than we take.

Through your refillable packaging and the Beauty Circle programme, you’ve reimagined what waste reduction can look like in the beauty industry.

For those who may not be familiar, please explain what this means and how the Beauty Circle programme works?

When we started Emma Lewisham, we looked at the beauty industry with fresh eyes and one of the biggest problems we saw was waste. Globally, around 100 billion units of beauty packaging are burned or sent to landfill every year.

Most of it can’t be recycled and isn’t designed to be reused, and packaging alone accounts for roughly 70% of the industry’s carbon emissions.

So we knew we had to completely rethink how packaging is designed, used, and managed. Our approach is about using materials already in the world, incorporating recycled content and designing our packaging to be refillable. Customers can purchase lightweight refill pods or pouches that use significantly less material and generate up to 74% fewer carbon emissions.

But we also take responsibility for what happens at the end of a product’s life. Through our Beauty Circle programme, we collect used packaging, sterilise it, and either put it back into circulation or ensure it’s properly recycled. It’s about full ownership, understanding the impact of everything we create and designing the most sensible, sustainable solution possible.

Ultimately, we believe sustainability shouldn’t mean compromise. To drive real change, products must still be beautiful, luxurious, and effective and I think that’s where we’ve been able to show that you really can have both.

Now that the Beauty Circle is well established, what kind of impact have you seen it make in the way your customers or consumers in general are now thinking when it comes to skincare?

There’s still work to be done, but we’ve seen real progress. Globally, we’ve helped accelerate the beauty industry’s shift toward refillable products and greater ownership of materials, even influencing major retailers like MECCA & Space NK.

Before we started speaking about circularity, many people didn’t realise how big the problem was. Now, more brands are offering refills, and retailers are making them more accessible on shelves. It’s encouraging to see this growing awareness and accountability across the industry.

Where in the Waikato, can our readers and community members drop their empty pods?

They can drop their empty pods at the MECCA Hamilton store or return them

From Morrinsville to the World: Emma Lewisham on Beauty with Purpose

via our website. When you purchase a product online, you can request a free shipping label. Simply stockpile your empties and send them back to us in Auckland.

From there, we sterilise what we can for reuse, and ensure anything that can’t be reused is properly recycled.

PACKAGING INNOVATION

Your packaging is so innovative. Can you share a bit about the design process behind it?

There’s a lot that goes into our packaging design. First and foremost, it’s about circularity, creating refillable products so customers can keep their outer packaging for life and only repurchase refills.

With our latest innovation, which contains a live probiotic (Supernatural Blemish Serum), the packaging also had to protect the bacteria from moisture so it stays active and effective. Each pump delivers over 350 million live probiotic cells to support the skin’s microbiome and calm inflammation associated with acne, eczema, and rosacea.

Balancing refillable design, performance, and practicality is a real challenge, but it’s also one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

And as the brand continues to grow globally, how are refills tracking compared to new product sales? Is it where you’d hoped it would be?

Yes, we’ve been absolutely thrilled. Refills are performing really well, even better than some retailers initially expected.

There was early skepticism that customers wouldn’t buy refills, but we believed they would. When people love a product and understand that refilling reduces carbon emissions by 74% and cuts waste, they genuinely want to do the right thing.

It’s been amazing to see that vision come to life, it’s working, and it’s motivating. Our customers feel like they’re part of a movement, contributing to meaningful change through small, everyday choices.

Emma, have you considered bringing out a skincare range for men?

We actually have a lot of men using our products already, the range works just as well for men; there’s no need for a separate line.

Skincare is for everyone, and it’s great to see more men, from Builders to Dairy Farmers, embracing that.

THE WORKOUT TAKING REFORMER PILATES TO THE NEXT LEVEL

At KX Pilates, fitness meets philosophy, blending science, precision, and purpose through the Kaizen Xperience, which means “change for the better.” Each 50-minute session is crafted to strengthen, tone, and transform your body, one small, powerful movement at a time.

@kxpilates.newzealand

Meet the workout unlike any other.

Combining traditional reformer Pilates principles with progressive techniques, KX Pilates delivers fullbody workouts designed to challenge every body. Founded on the Japanese philosophy of Kaizen, meaning “change for the better”. KX focuses on minor, continuous improvements that lead to lasting results. Each 50-minute session is dynamic, personalised, and designed to help you train smarter, not longer.

At the heart of the KX experience is the Kaizen Xperience: a belief that actual progress comes from consistent, mindful movement. Every workout is tailored to meet you where you are, no matter your age, ability, or fitness background, so you can move, grow, and strengthen at your own pace.

The Method Behind the Movement

KX Pilates is a modern evolution of reformer Pilates. Using a reformer machine equipped with a signature spring system, each session adds resistance and intensity in ways that traditional workouts can’t.

This unique setup targets specific muscle groups, engages the core, and promotes balance and alignment, all while delivering a high-energy, low-impact workout that leaves you stronger from the inside out. For those new to reformer Pilates, KX makes it easy to get started. Expert trainers guide you through every movement, ensuring you feel confident and supported while getting the most out of your session.

Three Levels of Progression

Beginner: Designed for newcomers or those returning after a break, beginner classes help you master the basics.

Trainers modify exercises to suit injuries or fitness limitations, building your confidence on the reformer from day one.

Intermediate: Once you’ve nailed the fundamentals, it’s time to level up.

Intermediate classes introduce new techniques and increased resistance to challenge your strength, coordination, and endurance. Small movements here deliver giant leaps in progress.

Advanced: For those who’ve mastered the reformer, advanced classes are the ultimate challenge.

Led by KX’s most experienced trainers, these sessions push you to your limits, helping you build power and stamina like never before, in just 50 minutes!

Meet the Trainers

Behind every great KX class is a team of KX Academy–certified trainers. Chosen for their expertise, energy, & ability to inspire, each trainer brings their own personality to the studio.

From tailored class design to personal progress tracking, they’re there to guide you every step of the way, motivating, challenging, and celebrating every win with you. Intimidating? Never. Inspiring? Always.

Why Everyone’s Talking About KX

What makes KX Pilates stand out isn’t just its signature reformer workouts, it’s the philosophy behind them.

KX believes that fitness should fit around your life, not the other way around. Every class is built to be efficient, empowering, and achievable, no matter your schedule or experience level.

Whether you’re a first-timer, a lifelong Pilates lover, or someone looking for a smarter way to stay strong, KX delivers a workout that’s as transformative as it is addictive.

Small movements. Giant leaps. That’s the KX way, fitness that evolves with you, one reformer class at a time.
