estled within Hamilton East, Made is a distinctive and lively market precinct that warmly welcomes both locals and visitors. It has been artfully designed to capture the hearts and routines of locals, swiftly establishing itself as a cherished destination for shopping, dining, and leisure. Converging a predominantly local cast of providers and vendors, Made unfolds as an ensemble of diverse areas, each with its unique charm. These encompass market kiosks, the inviting Mess Hall eatery, retail spaces on the Mezzanine, and the bustling Sheds – all thoughtfully positioned alongside the picturesque Waikato River walkway. In the tradition of Riverbank Lane in the CBD, Made, too, pays homage to the river, effortlessly turning to embrace this pivotal element of the cityscape, an asset that this venue undoubtedly maximizes to its full potential.

The Making of Made Market, Hamilton East.

“Connecting to the river walkways has been a big part of our motivation and being able to bike, walk or wander in is pretty cool”. We have combined that with 135 car parks and in addition he feels that “showcasing some of the best of what the Waikato has to offer under one roof is exciting - we think we’ve got some of the finest operators.” Owner Matt Stark reflects on some of the goals for the project.

Wander in from the Grey St entrance, and you’ll find fresh food and artisan market kiosks alongside the beautiful BARE Refillery, where you can fulfill all your essential grocery needs. Red Kitchen’s takehome ready meals, seasonal veggies from Pirongia Mountain Vegetables and choice cuts from Expleo the Butcher are all within a basket’s reach. “The kids will love the smoothies, pretzels, oat bowls and acai, while the grown-ups grab an espresso and delicious pastry”. Smaller creators and producers are nurtured in The Larder, a collective of makers working from one site to bring must-have pantry staples, treats and giftware together into one space.

4

In line with the ethos of Made, this extends the opportunity for emerging businesses to showcase and sample local products at the tasting table.

A new local craft beer bar, Hapi and Amphora Wine Bar will also make the mess hall home, which ticks many boxes for casual dining and hospitality. Ali Lennan, part of the operations team at Made, believes; “Hamiltonians will warmly welcome the mess hall concept. We’ve got a gorgeous food selection in a comfortable, family-friendly space, entertainment galore with the Golf Sim and Karaoke suite able to be booked across the week, and some new dining options like the freshest of Japanese cuisine from Omo Omo; it’s a genuinely exciting prospect.” Upstairs, the mezzanine at Made takes on a slightly different energy with thoughtfully curated homewares and florist, fashion and massage alongside a vast space that will house an all-day eatery early in 2024. Insiders’ Hot Tip: The ceiling installation in the market atrium is spectacular ... but you’ll need to see that for yourself! There is little doubt that locals and visitors to the Waikato region are in for a real treat with the opening of Made.

riserealestate.co.nz // @riserealestate.nz

As you make your way through the market, the views open up toward the generous riverside deck and the Mess Hall, a collection of great places to eat, from the south Indian cuisine of Spice Lane to gelato from Little’ Lato and everything in between.

Now that the Summer months are upon us, activity in the market has begun to show signs of growth, which is great for both vendors and purchasers, as we have been seeing stock moving across the board. We’re noticing vendors are becoming realistic with their price expectations; however, some still hold on to higher asking prices. Whilst many of us love the hot weather for more reasons than one, it’s also one of the better times to sell your home, which is why I thought it reasonable to share some pros and cons of selling in summer.

Pro’s • Less competition from the Spring selling frenzy. • Often has a sense of urgency from hopeful buyers who could not purchase a home last year. • Buyers have more time for inspections. • Generally, the properties are nice and warm. Con’s • Many buyers and vendors are in Christmas and holiday mode; after all, it is the silly season. • Your yard (lawn) can brown off, especially in the warmer months.

The Perfectly Imperfect Factory Join us as we embark on a journey through time, exploring the magic that awaits within the walls of The Sunday Society, where past and present blend seamlessly to create a unique tapestry of elegance and charm. As an actual family business, our guiding principle is sourcing items we genuinely adore, ensuring that our offerings range from ornate 200-year-old gilt French mirrors to rugged mid-century industrial steel workbenches and everything in between. These are harmoniously accompanied by a thoughtfully chosen selection of contemporary home goods, ranging from daily necessities to exquisite, futureheirloom gifts. Named in homage to the leisurely pace of Sundays, when we pause to relish what we love with those we cherish in places close to our hearts, The Sunday Society embodies the values of a slower time.

“Much like the historical treasures nestled within the factory’s walls, the pieces here represent a time when craftsmanship was an art celebrated, skills were poured lovingly into each creation, and the resulting works were revered and cherished.”

Being off the beaten path is integral to us, as we aim to provide items that are distinct and not readily found elsewhere, ensuring your visit is always worthwhile. And if you’re fortunate, you may catch a glimpse of our on-site workshop, where we lovingly restore the next treasure that’s about to grace our shelves. As a fascinating tidbit, the Glaxo Building, our home within the factory, was once hailed as the world’s largest and most modern dairy factory when it was constructed. Its history is intertwined with decades of New Zealand’s farming and business heritage, as the newly-founded NZ Dairy Co-op, the precursor to Fonterra, erected it. We are delighted to carry forward its rich legacy. When you walk through our doors and explore our 400-square-metre showroom and workshop, we invite you to take a moment to slow down and savour the extraordinary space we’ve crafted. From our family to yours, we aim to offer exceptional service, products that delight, and an experience that is second to none!

Ongaroto Bluffs | Whakamaru

03

Pūkorokoro Bird Hide Track | Kaiaua

05

Discover the world of birdwatching at Pūkorokoro Miranda Shorebird Centre on East Coast Road.

Climb to the top of the Ongaroto Bluffs for lofty views of a deep forested valley and a narrow road disappearing into the distance as it weaves between towering cliffs and the often mist-shrouded Waikato River.

This family-friendly trail winds through lush podocarp trees and features a unique grey boulder that has puzzled experts – did a volcano propel it or did it roll down a river due to its round shape? You can’t miss it during your walk.

Rent binoculars, chat with volunteers, and explore three viewing hides (60 minutes round trip) or visit Robert Findlay Wildlife Reserve (20 minutes round trip) nearby. Observe thousands of wading birds, including kuaka/bar-tailed godwits returning from the Arctic.

The bluffs are accessible by biking the Whakamaru Trail section of the Waikato River Trails, or opt for the easier alternative by driving south from Whakamaru.

An interpretative nature trail offers educational insights with numbered posts that correspond to a downloadable Department of Conservation factsheet. Look for floating twigs to play Poohsticks at the bridges or by the stream.

For prime birdwatching, time your visit two hours before or after high tide. The riverside car park is about 4.5 km south of the State Highway 30/32 junction, about 20 min from Tokoroa, 10 min from Ātiamuri and 30 min from Taupō.

02

Whakapipi Lookout / Bald Spur Track | Te Aroha Domain

Allow between 20 - 60 min return. The wellgraded track suits buggies & wheelchairs (grab a gate security code from the centre – walkers don’t require a code). East Coast Road south of Kaiaua. No dogs.

04

Waterworks Track & Glowworms | Ngāruawāhia

If the troops aren’t ready to conquer the highest point of the Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park, Mount Te Aroha, this scenic alternative offers excellent views of the township and countryside from its vantage point at a more achievable 350m above sea level.

Explore the historic 750,000-litre reservoir near Hakarimata Scenic Reserve – an easy, non-strenuous adventure compared to the Hakarimata Steps. Follow the Mangarata Stream from Brownlee Avenue, keep straight at the trail split to the steps.

The trailhead begins beside the world’s only hot soda water geyser - which erupts in a frothy frenzy every 40 minutes - and ascends steadily, zigzagging past introduced pines, native trees and swathes of parataniwha to the lookout.

After a small spillway, find a picnicfriendly gravel area where you can savor the forest’s tranquility. At dusk, witness the forest below the dam come alive with iridescent glowworms – a perfect post-dinner activity for kids.

Allow 45 min one-way to the lookout. Toilet and car parking at Te Aroha Domain. Walking only. Dogs on leads.

Walking only. Allow 60 min (2 km) return. Parking on Brownlee Avenue, Ngāruawāhia. Toilet at the car park. No dogs.

Pirongia Forest Park

Walking only. Allow between 60 to 90 min return. At Te Pahū turn onto Hodgson Road, then Grey Road. Toilets available. Only suitable for walking. No dogs allowed.

06

Karakariki Track | Whatawhata Unearth long-buried sea creatures and shells at this popular fossil fossicking and summer swimming spot, only 20 minutes from Hamilton. Wander past grazing cattle and across swing bridges before following a small stream shaded by regenerating shrubbery and trees to the Karakariki Waterfall. Bring a picnic and let the kids loose hunting for ancient critters in the shallow stream.

Walking only. A mix of dirt and grass paths. Stiles to cross. Allow 60 min for a quick out-and-back. No facilities. Drive 5 min past Whatawhata on SH23, turn onto Karakariki Road, then left at Karakariki Christian Camp onto Karakariki Valley Road. No dogs.

In the realm of Hamilton, an establishment instantly captivates the imagination: Good George Brewing Co. And, it’s not just an initial thought; it’s a top-of-mind choice when it comes to exploring an array of beverage options. But we’re sure we’re not the only ones who often wonder how you choose the right brew for your palate. Particularly those moments when you’re engrossed in lively conversation with your friends, immersed in the chatter since your arrival, and naturally, the menu has remained neglected. Now, as the waiter awaits your order with a sense of urgency, the challenge becomes even more intriguing.

@goodgeorgebeer

You can choose the styles you love or push the boundaries a little with something like our Champion Haze of Glory. One of the great joys of life is trying new things and new experiences. Live a little!

A balmy summer afternoon with the boys, what should I be drinking? Three options, Deck Hair Hazy Pale Ale, juicy and smashable or The Pilsner, which is aromatic, crisp and clean; or The Good George lager, which is a lager you don’t overthink, just drink!

Friday night with the ladies spent talking over each other and dreaming of spending a summer in Europe, what should we be drinking? Start off with Good George Aotearoa Dry Gin. For a simple G&T, this is perfectly matched with our very own Classic Dry Tonic (or your own favourite. garnished with a slice of melon or cucumber.

Then move on to our Good George Espresso Martini. Bold coffee notes with a hint of chocolate to round out the cocktail. Perfect for any occasion and guaranteed to impress. Shake it, pour it and enjoy!

What type of foods are best paired with the following: 1. Fog City Hazy IPA: A creamy Carbonara Pasta. The full richness of the beer and the smooth creaminess of the pasta will delight. 2. Extra Dry Apple Cider: All day long, a Pork Knuckle. The acidity from the cider cuts through, and what is better than pork and apples 3. Aotearoa Dry Gin: Ohh, A Hard Cumin Cheese, the light liquorice and the cumin work exceptionally well together

Just quickly, who is George, and is he good? We are all about GOOD. Our home is the Good GEORGE Church in Hamilton. An ordinary place where our team are doing extraordinary things.

t Green with Envy, we search the globe for covetable piece that bring style and simplicity to your home. Our stores offer an inspiring space, full of carefully collected and curated furniture, homewares, linens, and gifts. We love classic, timeless products designed to be used in our everyday lives, and enjoyed for years to come. In 2010, Green with Envy was launched as an online store, soon after we converted a rustic country barn on Matakana Road and opened our first bricks and mortar store. Then ten years after we began, we converted the original Cambridge garage station and opened our 2nd store on Victoria Street. A year later we bought and undertook a major renovation on a tired cafe on Matakana road, which was set on a beautiful lush green site - complete with waterfall. We opened the doors of our Matakana flagship store in early 2022. “Our store caught the attention of the judges at the International Homewares Association Global Innovation Awards (GIA) in Chicago and in 2017, Green with Envy was named one of five Global Honorees for Retail Excellence.” The judges praised our beautifully curated collection of homewares, and the attention to detail that elevates a simple transaction into a memorable and enjoyable shopping experience. @green_with_envy_nz greenwithenvy.co.nz

Q& We had the privilege to chat with Courtney Duncan, the four-time Women’s World Motocross champion and friend of Rise Real Estate. We delved into the decision to break into the maledominated world of motocross, which has ultimately paved the way for Courtney’s immensely satisfying career and her experiences as one of the pioneering women competing for world titles in motocross during its earlier days.

@cduncan151 // cduncan.co

38

How important has Kawasaki been in your career? Kawasaki has been a huge part of my career. I’ve been with them for five years now and we have won all four of my world titles together; that speaks for itself and I’ve had really good support along the way, both here in Europe and also back home in New Zealand. I hope to finish my career with Kawasaki and have many more successes in the future together.

What has inspired you to pursue a career in Professional Motocross? When I was around 12 or 13 years old, I watched a race on TV, and that marked the start of a lifelong career inspired by Kiwi world stage icons like Ben Townley, Josh Coppins, and Katherine Prumm. Seeing these individuals on podiums motivated me to aspire to reach that same stage one day.

Many Kiwi women look up to you as their role model. Who do/did you look up to, to achieve your success? Again, the Kiwi icons, particularly Josh, Ben, and Katherine, were a significant source of inspiration for me. I was a dedicated fan and supporter of their success in

motocross on the international stage. Katherine’s achievement as the world champion in 2007/2008, when I was 10/11 years old, profoundly impacted me and was a great source of inspiration.

Do you believe there are any misconceptions about women’s abilities in motocross, and how do you address this? Like many sports, motocross has historically been seen as maledominated, and the numbers have reflected that reality. However, it’s worth noting the remarkable growth that motocross has undergone more recently. When I began racing, relatively few women were involved, but now we’re close to having a full gate of female racers! It’s been awesome to be a part of this change, and I hope to see the numbers continue to rise in the coming years.

What advice would you give women wanting to get into a male-dominated sport? Do what you love, and don’t be afraid to try something new, even something that may be perceived as a male-dominated sport!

When I started racing, there weren’t really any females involved; this never held me back, and I never looked at it any differently.

You have just secured another world title at the Women’s Motocross World Championships, the fourth in a row. Congratulations to you, and what’s the plan now? Yeah, I have just won my fourth world title. Only a few people get to experience one world title, let alone four, so I’m pretty proud, and it’s been a massive achievement for me, my team and everyone involved.

A.

I have enjoyed this achievement for a few weeks, and there will be a time in the coming weeks when we flick the switch and get down off the mountain and start climbing towards title number five, though, so that’s the plan for the next year.

It is just the same as them if you really enjoy it, just get stuck in and give it to the boys and don’t be afraid. Follow your dreams!

Gary and Pam McMahon didn’t start the business, but they certainly took it to the next level and passed the passion to their three daughters, who, between them, created a trilogy. Behind the welcome gate in Newell Road – the Country Providore is run by two daughters – Emma and Kate. Third daughter, Haley, operates Punnet Eatery. Both have become a destination where locals catch up, and travellers meet! Built on family traditions, this boutique oasis is a magnet – for grandparents and young families alike. The playground plays a key role. Emma admits it wasn’t until becoming a mother that she appreciated exactly why. Mums catch up with friends – either at the café, looking for gifts or buying produce. All this, while keeping an eye on their kids cavorting in the playground. “People are drawn for a common reason of community. What the McMahon family created here however, is far deeper than what’s on the surface. Gary and Pam instilled values in their daughters that made a good story extraordinary.” Twenty-two years ago, there was virtually nothing when the family arrived in Tamahere. Emma remembers just the strawberry patch. Growing up, the girls worked on the farm after school, weekends and holidays. Christmas was always the busiest, of course.

All three daughters eventually joined the family business - morphing into the diverse ventures here now. The Country Providore was Emma’s dream. Starting almost 13 years ago, she runs it with her younger sister Kate. Haley – the eldest - has owned Punnet Eatery for 10. Run separately, each are as symbiotic as the relationships within this tight-knit family and the synergy between staff and customers alike. The Providore encapsulates the essence of what it means to supply goods. This store doesn’t simply supply; it surprises with the extent of bespoke items and produce. Homeware, gifts, accessories, and baby ware; pantry preserves to fresh berries and ice cream – there is something for everyone. Carefully sourced giftware – much from around New Zealand- includes exclusive pieces designed especially for Providore. For Emma, it’s all about creating an experience. As with any story of twists and turns, Covid was a huge speed bump for both Providore and Punnet. Having built their businesses as a hub for the community, both teams hit a crossroad when forced into lockdown in March 2020. Emma knew closed doors meant a new approach.

“It was a turning point. We never had a web presence up until then and we realised something had to change.” Bringing an IT specialist on board, within four weeks, they had a website up and running, complete with click and collect. Emma says it wouldn’t have worked – firstly, without the IT specialist who now co-ordinates the website – but mainly their customers.

Legendary in Tamahere, the McMahon name spreads wider afield thanks to the unique experience here.

“We couldn’t have done it without the community. The support was overwhelming.”

“It’s a family joke that we live on a commune; the houses almost touch,” laughs Haley.

Punnet Eatery has its own chapter in this story. Haley’s early career was event management and hospitality. Based in Sydney when her father called about possibly buying into the café he started almost 14 years ago, the timing was right.

Emma and Haley both agree that passion drives their respective businesses, but it’s the people around them with the same passion that is key. An extended family and contagious ethos shared by everyone involved with Providore and Punnet.

Acknowledging her father’s vision for the café’s creation, Haley has taken Punnet to new heights and the reward speaks for itself. Not only a loyal customer base, but loyal staff. Haley’s analytical business mind might underpin the café’s success, but she says it’s the people working alongside her who make it work. With a team of 35 – 25 of those full-time – the commitment to fresh, chef-prepared cuisine sets Punnet apart. Testament to this café’s popularity, their signature dish has been on the menu for 10 years.

Community spirit has long arms within Tamahere. Haley, Emma and Kate might have surrendered their maiden names, but the McMahon heritage remains true. All with children of their own, each family is entrenched in the familiarity it brings within the entire community.

Like Emma, Haley had to pivot, continue serving great food – and survive; where others would ultimately fail. Punnet Eatery has not only survived, it has gone from strength to strength take home meals, catering boxes, functions and workshops all part of Punnet’s distinctive platter. Haley is also the first to praise the incredible community support they received. Like Emma, a mother of three herself – juggling pre-schoolers and a baby during lockdowns while keeping business alive – Haley feels like she’s just emerging from the haze. Both businesses open seven days a week, 364 days a year. Christmas is their only break. Such is the family closeness, Haley and Emma live with their husbands and children within cooee of their parents. Kate and her husband and kids live around the corner.

It’s the same for all three husbands. Haley quips they have no choice. As it turns out however, Emma and Kate’s husbands have a business that links loosely with their wives. As beekeepers, they supply raw honey around the country, but make an exclusive Earth Soldiers honey for Providore. Like a hive, the busy-bee intricacy inside this Tamahere pocket knows no bounds. With Providore already in the Christmas spirit and festive gifts sparkling, this story continues. With many chapters to envisage yet - turning the page, only whets the appetite for more.

Getting The Bank to Say ‘YES’ to Your Home Loan If you’re considering applying for a home loan, understanding what banks look for in the approval process is crucial. Banks meticulously assess your financial standing and ability to manage a mortgage. Your level of risk determines the amount they are willing to lend. In this update, we’ll delve into the key factors banks consider, boosting your odds of securing that coveted home loan approval. Income: Demonstrating Your Financial Stability When evaluating your income, banks go beyond the mere sum you earn. They scrutinize your employment history, tenure in your current job, and whether you’re a PAYE earner or self-employed. Your employment status, be it full-time, part-time, casual, or permanent, is also a significant factor. Selfemployed applicants might face additional criteria due to a perceived higher risk.

To enhance your mortgage approval prospects, maintaining a stable income and showcasing a consistent employment history are essential. These factors instill confidence in banks, assuring them of your financial stability to meet mortgage repayment obligations. Working with a Mortgage Advisor can provide invaluable guidance throughout the process, maximising your chances of success. With thorough preparation, you can navigate the home loan landscape with confidence and achieve your homeownership dreams. Reach out if you need a hand!
