We attend as many of the ribbon cuttings, Business after Hours, monthly luncheons, and training seminars that we can. We’re also responsible for reaching out to all new members and helping them realize all benefits their new Chamber membership has to offer. Our monthly meeting is fun as well as productive. We’ve become a group of great friends and mentors! Of course, we also help the Chamber Board and Executive Director by serving on subcommittees and helping where ever we can on different projects throughout the year. History of Tooele County

T
ooele County’s history embraces accounts from Native Americans and early explorers to the railroad and mines to the impact of the defense industry. It is impossible to squeeze the rich heritage of our county onto these few pages, but some of the area’s most significant events are highlighted. Prior to the white man settlements in Tooele County’s valleys and deserts, the area was occupied by Native Americans. Evidence in the strata at Danger Cave near Wendover shows that hunter-gather people lived in that area as early as 8000 B.C., shortly after the mammoth and saber tooth tiger. The Fremont people were in the vicinity in 1000 A.D. and about 1600 A.D. there is evidence of the ancestors of the Ute and Goshutes tribes. The Goshutes lived in Tooele Valley and Rush Valley in homes made of logs, sagebrush or cedar branches, or in caves. They lived off of deer, jack rabbits, berries, seeds, grasshoppers and other insects. There were fewer than 200 of the Goshutes when the white man arrived. Several famous Western explorers ventured into Tooele County during the 1800’s including Jim Bridger who was the first white man to see the Great Salt Lake. Jedediah Smith, the senior partner in the Rocky Mountain Fur Company, made a life-threatening cross of Tooele County’s West Desert from California in the summer of 1827. John Charles Fremont, the ill-fated Donner-Reed party, and Captain Howard Stansbury were among the explorers

crossing or visiting Tooele County prior to permanent settlement. On July 27, 1847, just three days after the first company of Mormon Pioneers entered Salt Lake Valley, Orson Pratt left a group of pioneers who were swimming in the Black Rock area. He became the first of Utah Pioneers to enter Tooele County and rode around the shores of the lake. He eventually viewed the valley from Adobe Rock near Lake Point. The pioneer visited the valley on occasion over the next few years as the valley was used for grazing cattle in 1847 and 1848. On Sept. 4, 1849 three families settled on a small stream south of present Tooele City. In November of 1849, four men including E.T. Benson (the great grandfather of LDS Church President Ezra Taft Benson), were granted the right to saw and building timber from Pine, Small (Middle), and Big (Settlement) Canyons. A gristmill was constructed at Milton (just north of present day Stansbury Park). Judson A.Tolman, the son of Judson and Sarah Holbrook Tolson, was the first white child to be born in the county of Feb. 25, 1850. “Tuilla” County became one of the first six counties of the unofficial State of Deseret. This occurred in 1850 while awaiting Congressional approval for statehood and before the official designation of Utah Territory. John Rowberry played a prominent role in Tooele County’s early history. He was desig-
nated as the first presiding elder in the area for the LDS Church, the first probate judge, the first postmaster and also the first mayor of Tooele City. In 1860, the famed Pony Express route crossed Tooele County during its brief, but consequential 16-month history. In conjunction with the settlement of Tooele City, Mormon families also began settling in Grantsville, Pine Canyon (Lincoln), Erda (Rose Springs Fort, Bates Branch and Batesville), Lake Point (E.T. City), Clover (Shambip), St. John, Vernon, Skull Valley, Knollen, Richville (Mills, Milltown, Milton and Millvale). Richville has the distinction of being the first county seat in Tooele County. The settlement of Stockton, Mercur, Jacob City, Wendover, Ophir, Gold Hill, and others came as a result of the influx of mining operations and railroads. Each of these communities has a unique and colorful history. Much of this information can be obtained from resources found in the Tooele City Public Library. Prior to 1908, the City of Tooele was a farming and ranching community of approximately 1,257 people. By 1930 it had become an industrialized city of 5,000 people. This transformation was caused by the construction of the Union Pacific and Western Pacific Railroads, and the opening of the Tooele Smelter, and Combined Metals Flotation Mill at Bauer.

The eastern section of Tooele, “Newtown” was built on Plat C for residences and business of many of those 1,000 smelter workers. Many families from the Balkans, Italy, Mediterranean, Greece, Asia Minor and the Near East lived in this area and formed their own community. Newtown included its own school church, and culture, including a wide variety of languages. The military played a significant role in the county’s early history with the stationing of military camps under the direction of Lt. Col. Edward J. Steptoe, Col. Patrick E. Conner, and Johnston’s Army. The outbreak of World War II brought the establishment of military bases that strengthened the nation’s defense, boosted the local economy, creating a dramatic change in Tooele County’s history. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, a 25,000 acre tract southwest of Tooele was selected as a site where Tooele Ordnance Depot was built in 1942. The Defense Department also ordered the construction of a storage depot for chemical weapons in Rush Valley, 20 miles south of Tooele City. In the same year, the Army Chemical Warfare Service established Dugway Proving Ground of 1,300 square miles of barren land in Skull Valley. Wendover Air Force Base opened in 1940 and by late 1943 the base had a population of 17,500 military and about 2,000 civilian personnel. After the war concluded it became known that Wendover was the training ground for the Enola Gay which dropped atomic bombs in Japan and brought an abrupt end to World War II. Although these military bases have had a dramatic impact on the communities of Tooele County, the nation has benefited from the dedicated workers that Tooele County has furnished to defend liberty. The men and women of Tooele County played vital rolls in supporting the soldier in the field. Tooele County has enjoyed moderate, steady growth since the opening of the Tooele Army Depot and Dugway Proving Ground. The expansion of the International Smelter and Refinery brought many Hispanic families into
the area in the 1950’s and 60’s. Tooele enjoyed a spurt of growth in the late 1970’s when the Anaconda began mining copper at the Carr Fork Project east of Tooele. Anaconda Carr Fork employed about 800 miners, however after only three years of production the project was halted when copper prices fell drastically. The opening of the Barrick Mercur Mine as well as development of industries in the county’s West Desert helped broadened the local tax base. Barrick closed in the 1990’s and the site was reclaimed. By 1993, the federal government remained the county’s largest employer because of Tooele Army Depot and Dugway Proving Ground. However, with the announced re-alignment of Tooele Army Depot (a proposed net loss of 1,800 jobs) and possible cuts at Dugway Proving Ground, Tooele County’s employment picture changed rapidly. During the realignment, the Depot downsized from more than 3,000 employees to 624 employees. Although the realignment of TAD resulted in a few business closures and some people moved away, the huge economic collapse never occurred. Instead, people began moving to Tooele County because of lower land prices and property available so close to Salt Lake City. Tooele County was named the 25th fastest growing county in the nation during 2001-2003 by the U.S. Census Bureau. A 1,707 acre portion of the Tooele Army Depot was transferred to the Tooele City Local Reuse Authority , and many of the government-constructed buildings in that area are now filled with manufacturing facilities, warehouses and offices. This area is currently owned and operated by the Utah Industrial Depot. Tooele County boasts of a proud past and anxiously awaits an even brighter future. One of the tests to determine if a person is a native to the area is if they can correctly pronounce Tooele. The correct pronunciation is Toowil-ah. Newcomers, however, often pronounce it Tool, Too-lee, or Too-illee. Tooele County was originally known as Tuilla County. The spelling was changed to Tooele in 1852 when the boundaries of the State of Deseret were extended to the California border. The origin of Tooele has been disputed since the area was settled. Most historians agree that it refers to the name of the Goshute Indian Chief Tuilla who lived in the valley years before the arrival of the Mormons. This version is documented by the maps of Captain Howard Stansbury who surveyed the area for the U. S. Government in 1850 and also by oral histories of early Mormon Pioneers. There are, however, other versions of origination. One is that Tooele took its name from “tule”, the abundant weed or bulrushes in the swampy areas of the valley. It is claimed that the name was misspelled by Thomas Bullock, secretary to Brigham Young, and the corruption of the word became Tooele. Arguments against this are that Bullock was an educated man and would hardly misspell so simple a work as “tule”. The third version is that LDS Church Apostle Orson Pratt, the first Mormon Pioneer to enter Tooele Valley, remarked that the valley resembled an Austrian village “Mat Tooele” that was located near the Adriatic Sea. LDS Church Historian Andrew Jensen points out however, that Orson Pratt did not visit that village in Austria until 20 years after the naming of Tooele. Another belief is that an Englishman on seeing the many hills that surrounded the valley remarked that the valley was “too ‘hilly” or that due to the thick growth of willows, the valley was “too willy”. 11

r. George Craner was the builder of a two story rock house for his family from stones he gathered from local hillsides south of Tooele. The home was located at 154 South Main Street, Tooele on property that George acquired in 1873 from Tooele City. Although the exact date of the construction of the home is unknown, it is estimated that it was built during the late 1800’s. Mr. Craner lived in the home with his mother who helped to raise his 4 living children after his wife passed away following the birth of their 12th child. On March 22, 1907 the home was purchased by Dr. Emil Isgreen for $1,200. Dr. Isgreen presented the home to his sister Mrs. Ann Isgreen Pocock who lived in the home with her husband Charles and their 10 children. The home was sold in 1946 to Dr. J. Herbert Millburn and Dr. Joseph L. Mayo. These two doctors opened the first fully equipped clinic in Tooele in May 1947 after completing an addition to the rear of the home. In remodeling the building the two doctors were very careful not to disturb the outside appearance of the front of the structure. The two front rooms were
converted into one large waiting room with the large fireplace left intact on the south wall. The spiral staircase on the north side of the room was not changed. A new addition that was added to the rear of the building included an office, laboratory, a nurse’s station and x-ray rooms in the center. Doctor’s offices and examining rooms were located on both sides of the building. The rear area of the building included a fully equipped operating room and two recovery rooms.

The front lower level of the main home will be used as a Welcome Center for visitors and residents to obtain information about the Tooele County area and its many offerings as a recreation area. Information will also be available to potential businesses who are interested in locating in the Tooele County area.
The Tooele County Chamber of Commerce purchased the property in November 2009 after the building had been left empty since December 2006. The roof on the old home and the back section of the building were in complete disrepair and damage had been done to several rooms inside the structure.
The Chamber has taken great care to repair and maintain the existing staircase and to keep the original fireplace unharmed, as well as saving other unique parts of the building including the original inside wooden doors. The windows and outside doors have all been replaced with energy efficient products and ADA accessibility standard products. The remodel is expected to be completed during the spring of 2011. The building will be used for community functions, Chamber activities and a “welcome” center for visitors.

eorge was born 1 June 1829 in Maxstoke, Warwickshire, England. He was the sixth child and the fourth son of George Benjamin and Elizabeth West Craner. George’s parents did not think it was necessary for their children to receive an education through the schools, but believed in hard work and experience. They secured a job for him following a plow, filling a position known as a “ClodHopper.” However, there was a lady living in the same community where George was who took a special liking to him, and she paid for him to have a three-year course under a private tutor. That was the only formal schooling he received. When George was 21, he took passage on a small sailing ship George W. Bourne from Liverpool England for America. He was the first in his family to come to America. He left England, 22 January 1851 and landed in New Orleans on 20 March 1851 (57 days). George then journeyed on to Council Buffs (Kanesville at the time). On 21 September 1851, the Saints in Kanesville were given an order by letter by President Brigham Young to come to
Salt Lake City, Utah. The next season after receiving President Brigham Young’s order, George Craner crossed the plains with the Eighteenth Company with James C. Snow as Captain. The company crossed the Missouri River on 2 July 1852, arrived in Salt Lake City 9 October 1852 (about 4 months crossing the plains).
Throughout George’s life he was found giving service to others. He assisted in building a wall around Tooele City during the troubles with the Indians there. He helped to build the beautiful dirt walks in Tooele. He was a City Councilor in Tooele for six years, Alderman for four years and City Treasurer for six years.
George Craner came out to Tooele Utah in October 1852. He established himself in Tooele by securing a ten acre farm where he built an adobe house. He worked hard to establish a home and earn money to send to his family in England. In 1854 his mother, father and four of his brothers and sisters were able to immigrate to Utah from England. His father, George Benjamin lost his life in route.
He has been successful as a farmer and a fruit grower. He has been recognized for raising the first peaches and currants in Tooele County. He built a beautiful two story rock home and provided for his mother as well as his own family throughout the years.
It was in Tooele on John Rowberry’s farm that he met Sarah Emma Jenkins. They were married 1 January 1857 by Bishop John Rowberry. Sarah was only 14 and George was 27. George and Sarah Emma were the parents of twelve children: George, John Jenkins, Eliza Elizabeth, Edward, Emma, Joseph, Mary Ann, Harriet, Martha, Sarah, Emeline and Clara.
He lost his wife, Sarah Emma (age 37), a few days after their last baby girl was born, 14 February 1880; he was 50. His integrity and industry has been recognized by the citizens and businessmen in Tooele County. He died on 17 July 1904 at the age of 75 in Tooele Utah leaving a host of family and friends to “mourn his demise” (Deseret News, 18 July 1904). Tooele County School District With a student population of over 13,400, Tooele County School District ranks as the 13th largest of Utah’s 40 school districts. The district employs 1,750 employees and operates 27 schools in seven locations: Tooele City,

Tooele Applied Technology College TATC’s mission is to provide its students with hands-on technical training and certification to prepare them for successful careers in Utah’s job market. The institution works closely with local employers to determine the latest skills required for jobs in demand. Programs include Cosmetology/Barbering, Healthcare, Information Technologies, and Business Technologies. The TATC serves high school students, adults and businesses residing in Tooele County, including Dugway, Grantsville, Stansbury Park, Tooele City and Wendover. Students may take single courses or entire programs in a compe-
tency-based instructional setting that allow students to work at their own pace, allowing for all types and ages of learners. The TATC is an open-entry / open-exit institution; it allows students to schedule course work on the days and times that work best for them. Students enjoy affordable tuition (free for high school students and $1.50 per hour for adults) and flexible scheduling. USU Tooele Regional Campus The Mission of Utah State University’s Tooele Regional Campus is to provide quality student centered academic programs responsive to the needs of Tooele County residents and surrounding areas, foster academic excellence and superior student services, and to enable students to achieve their educational goals at home while contributing to their families and community. Utah State University has been reaching out to the citizens of Utah through regional campuses since 1960. Regional campuses and educational centers are located in 35 Utah communities besides Logan. The USU-Tooele Regional Campus opened in 1984 in a rented store front classroom and then moved to the current location on West Vine Street in 1995. In 2010, USU-Tooele currently had approximately 1,000 students enrolled, a 13% increase from the previous fall semester and 27% increase in the past two years. Students consist of young and old, traditional and non-traditional learners. Afternoon and evening classes are offered Monday through Friday with

some Saturday morning classes are also available. Over 300 courses are available and students can select from 35 different degrees and certificates at USU- Tooele. Ten full-time faculty and more than 30 adjunct instructors provide a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses each semester. A recent expansion of the building has doubled the number of classrooms and labs. Financial aid and scholarships are available; two academic advisors are ready to guide students on to degree completion. USU-Tooele recently acquired an additional 54 acres of property adjacent to the Tooele County School District Community Learning Center and plans to partner with Tooele Applied Technical College to construct a 65,000 sq ft building by 2012. The campus is located at 1021 W. Vine Street, Tooele. Come see what USU-Tooele has to offer. Excelsior Academy Excelsior Academy opened August 24, 2009. The Charter school serves kindergarten through 8th grades. The mission of Excelsior Academy is to
educate scholars with a broad classical foundation of knowledge, assisting them with opportunities to learn at their challenge level in an intentionally inviting environment to help scholars acquire a life-long love of learning. The Tooele County Business Development and Resource Center The Tooele County Business Development and Resource Center (BDRC) is a one-stop location for local business advising and consulting. The Center offers pre-venture business owners assistance with the steps required for business licensing, obtaining start-up capital, market strategizing, demographic studying, and business plan writing. For companies that have already started, the BDRC is able to analyze and consult in most business topics including, but not limited to, human resources, financing, expanding, contracting, marketing, inventory control, and lean office/manufacturing. Due to the professional certifications required to provide legal and tax advice, the Center cannot consult in these areas. Aside from providing one-on-one consulting for both individuals and companies, the BDRC provides seminars and classes regarding topics known to be needed in the business commu-
nity. Such topics for these classes include, but are not limited to, customer service, marketing, financing, general economics, demographics, business plans, and business start-up capital. The BDRC operates on funding from local, state, and federal governments, and therefore provides the consulting services to local businesses for free. Dugway Proving Ground provides the quality testing today necessary to keep our nation’s defense strong for tomorrow. Our test experts are qualified and eager to support your test needs, from initial planning and test conduct through test evaluation and reporting.
Readiness and response to prevail in a changing world
The Department of Defense has designated Dugway Proving Ground as a major range and testing facility, and the primary chemical and biological defense testing center under the Reliance Program. Testers here determine the reliability and survivability of all types of military equipment in a chemical or biological environment. The Proving Ground is located in the Great Salt Lake Desert, approximately 85 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah. Surrounded on three sides by mountain ranges, the Proving Ground’s terrain varies from level salt flats to scattered sand dunes and rugged mountains. Dugway Proving Ground covers 797,974 acres: an area approximately the size of Rhode Island. It is an ideal environment to be the Defense Department’s leader in chemical and biological defensive testing, environmental characterization, and remediation technology testing. Such tests evaluate the reliability and survivability of all types of military equipment in a chemical or biological environment. In addition to Chem-Bio testing, Dugway also tests unmanned aerial systems and the Joint Land Attack Cruise Missile Defense Elevated Netted Sensor System. Advanced chemical biological training of National Guard Civil Support Teams, military units, police, firefighters and other emergency first responders is also accessible through the Department of Homeland Security or available to other qualified applicants. Geographically, Dugway is located in the eastern Great Basin desert region of the American West. The mean elevation is 4,350 feet above sea level. Dugway sits under a huge invisible container of protected airspace known as the Utah Test and Training Range, controlled by the U.S. Air Force. Military Flight Operations in this area are very frequent. NASA has also used the combined air/land space for critical recovery operations of its Genesis and Stardust Mission Craft. The word “Dugway” comes from a reference to wagon trains traveling through the area in the 1800’s. To avert major trail grading required to stabilize heavy wagon loads, the up-slope side of a wheel trail would be dug into the hillside to minimize the tilt on wagons. Thus to travel up or downhill safely, wagons would often take this dug-way trail. The nearest major national-scale city is Salt Lake City, Utah, 85 miles northeast. Major population regions within 500 miles include Boise, Idaho; Reno and Las Vegas, Nevada; and Denver, Colorado. 5 National Parks, including Yellowstone, Bryce, Zion and the Grand Canyon, along with a dozen or so National Monuments and many recreation areas are all within 8 hours driving time. 30

More recently, we answered the call to support our troops in the harsh deserts of Iraq. We provide specialized services in ammunition equipment prototype design, development, fabrication and fielding. This support includes innovating ammunition peculiar equipment used for demilitarization, renovation, modification, modernization and maintenance of conventional-type munitions. The depot also receives, stores, issues, renovates, modifies, maintains and destroys conventional munitions for all of the DoD.
Deseret Chemical Depot Creating a safer tomorrow . . . today

The Detonation of Ammunition in a Vacuum Integrated Chamber (DAVINCH) is a proven Explosive Destruction Technology that will dispose of more than 300 mustard agent-filled munitions that are badly deteriorated or have leaked in the past and are now safely stored in overpack containers.
When disposal operations began in August 1996, Deseret Chemical Depot’s original stockpile totaled 13,617 tons of chemical agent stored in more than 1.1 million munitions and bulk containers. Today, less than 10 percent of the original agent tonnage remains. DCD’s accomplishments are outstanding—especially considering that its stockpile was the single-largest and most diverse stockpile in the United States, consisting of rockets, bombs, mines, bulk containers, spray tanks, cartridges and projectiles containing nerve and blister agents. To date, all of DCD’s GB and VX nerve agents have been destroyed. The mustard agent destruction campaign has been underway since August 2006, and is expected to be completed in early summer 2011 when the last mustard ton container is processed in the Tooele Chemical Agent Disposal Facility (TOCDF). While Deseret Chemical Depot has achieved great success and is close to completely eliminating its chemical weapon stockpile, many challenges still lie ahead. For example, not all of the munitions can be destroyed at the TOCDF. This includes approximately 300 mustard agent-filled projectiles and mortars that are badly deteriorated or have leaked in the past and are now safely stored in overpack containers. These munitions will be destroyed using a type of Explosive Destruction Technology (EDT) system known as the DAVINCH, or Detonation of Ammunition in Vacuum Integrated Chamber. The DAVINCH was chosen because these munitions cannot be processed using the existing demilitarization process at the TOCDF without increased risks to workers. The DAVINCH is a proven EDT system. There are four DAVINCH systems currently in operation—one
in Japan; one in Belgium; and two in the People’s Republic of China—and they have successfully and safely destroyed more than 5,400 chemical weapons. The DAVINCH at DCD will be located within the depot’s secure storage area, known as Area 10, where the munitions are safely stored in earth-covered igloos. Site preparation for the DAVINCH has started and operations are expected to start in mid 2011. Another challenge is the disposal of DCD’s GA nerve and lewisite blister agents—the only U.S. stockpile of these chemical agents. The U.S. Army’s Chemical Materials Agency (CMA) thoroughly examined disposal options, considering safety and efficiency. CMA determined that a separate incineration system is the best process to dispose of DCD’s stockpile of GA and lewisite, which is limited to bulk containers. The planned small-scale liquid incinerator will be constructed and operated in DCD’s Area 10, and is aptly named the Area Ten Liquid Incinerator (ATLIC). The ATLIC is similar to TOCDF’s liquid incinerators yet it is smaller in scale. Workers will drain and decontaminate the bulk containers using two specially designed glove boxes. The ATLIC will then dispose of the GA and lewisite, as well as the spent decontamination rinsate. ATLIC operations are expected to take approximately six months and are scheduled to be completed in time to meet the April 2012 international treaty deadline. The dedication to this project by the entire workforce at Deseret is the cornerstone of the many successes that will be celebrated with the completion of disposal operations. An Economic Hub in Tooele County During the current economic downturn, real estate has taken a huge hit. When we think of real estate, the image of homes comes to mind but commercial real estate has taken just as big of a hit as residential. When companies look at their annual expenses, real estate is one of the top expenses they incur. A local business park, Utah Industrial Depot, has a solution to the bottom line. With some of the lowest rates available in Utah, the Utah Industrial Depot is a low cost leader in the state of Utah. Utah Industrial Depot, formerly a portion of the Tooele Army Depot that went through a Base Closure and Realignment (BRAC) process in the 1990’s, has been privately owned and operated since 1999. With shovel-ready land, rail service, low rates, flexible terms and a business friendly community, they have turned a vacant 2.5 million square foot business park into a bustling 4.3 million square foot business park with 66 companies employing over 1,000 individuals. One of their newer tenants can attest to that. El Paso Corporation has retained 25,000 square feet and 66 acres of outside storage for a pipeline fabrication facility and distribution center. El Paso Corporation is the parent company of Ruby Pipeline, L.L.C. which has commenced a pipeline project that includes
approximately 675 miles of a 42-inch natural gas transmission pipeline, beginning at the Opel Hub in Wyoming, and terminating at interconnects near Malin, Oregon. Burly Seal, a company that relocated from California in 2002, has made their home in the business park with continued success. Leasing 32,000 square feet, they have found success with the labor force and steady lease rates. Carlisle SynTec also made the Utah Industrial Depot their distribution hub of the west. They purchased 50 acres of land and developed 500,000 square feet of manufacturing and distribution space. Some of the attraction for them was the low land rates, rail service and labor force. Utah Industrial Depot also offers spaces for small and medium companies. An east coast concern, Ski Mountain Supply, recently leased 3,000 square feet to fit their manufacturing needs. Also, Electronic Recycling Solutions has signed a lease for 3,000 square feet with the ability to expand as needed. With a business friendly community, flexible terms, rates and sizes, The Utah Industrial Depot is a significant economic engine in Tooele County.

Oquirrh Mountain Mining Museum Tooele County’s close ties to mining—both past and present—are shown with pride at the Oquirrh Mountain Mining Center. Learn about how Ophir, Jacob City, Mercur and Gold Hill diverted thousands of miners who were originally bound for California’s gold fields to strike it rich. Utah State Firefighter’s Museum and Memorial The Utah State Firefighter’s Museum and Memorial is over 50,000 square feet in size and features 55 restored vintage fire trucks, early-day uniforms, protection equipment and other related memorabilia and artifacts. The museum is open Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Parties and special gatherings are available. 34

Dugway-Skull Valley Area Iosepa Settlement Cemetery This Polynesian Settlement was named after Joseph F. Smith, then president of the LDS Church. What remains of Iosepa can still be visited. Pronounced Yo-say-pa, (Hawaiian for Joseph) this small, remote village survived the harsh desert atmosphere for 28 years. The little colony began in 1889 by Hawaiian LDS converts who came to Salt Lake City beginning in 1875 to be close to the LDS Temple. However, because of a lack of available land with water in Salt Lake Valley, and the converts desire to live as a group, the LDS Church bought property for them in Skull Valley. By 1917 the community was abandoned after it was announced that an LDS Temple was to be built in Hawaii. In August 1989, LDS President Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated the cemetery as the final resting place for the Hawaiians. All that remains is a cemetery and a few cement foundations. Located 14 miles south of I-80, Exit 72.
Orr’s Ranch Lincoln Highway In 1913 the Lincoln Highway came into being, the first coast-to-coast “motor road” that linked New York City and San Francisco. Its 3,389 miles of mostly one-lane dirt road passed through the heart of Tooele County, with a major stop at Orr’s Ranch in Skull Valley. The ranch still stands today, with an intact Lincoln Highway marker on site. Anyone who wishes to view the bridge must make arrangements through the Dugway Proving Ground public affairs office.
Grantsville Area Donner-Reed Museum The museum contains relics from the infamous Donner-Reed party that rested here prior to their ill-fated journey across the Great Salt Lake Desert in 1846. Artifacts left by the party are displayed along with other pioneer and Indian relics. Benson Gristmill Originally built in 1854 to grind wheat and other grains grown by local farmers, the gristmill was lovingly restored by local history buffs, and today serves as a visitor’s center, valley landmark and community gathering place. The Benson Gristmill is open May 1 through Nov. 1 for tours and special events. Ophir-Mercur Area Ophir Historic District A portion of the old mining town’s buildings has been lovingly restored, including a post office and a train filled with period antiques and artifacts from the past, including photos and historic articles. All of the furnishings reflect life in the late 1800s to early 1900s. The site is open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day from Memorial Day until the end of September. Stockton Area Stockton Historic Marker This marker, erected by the 1976 Bicentennial Commission, points out that the oldest mining camp in Utah, the first smelter west of St. Louis and the first electric light in the state, were all located in the Stockton area. The marker is located in the center of town.

Tooele Valley Railroad Museum The Tooele Valley Railroad Museum features treasures from the area’s early railroad and mining days. The Settlement Canyon Chapter of Sons of Utah Pioneers created this monument at the mouth of Settlement Canyon to complement a special memorial garden for early pioneer graves that had been periodically disturbed by construction projects, and then relocated further away from state Route 36.
Wendover Area
Steptoe Military Camp Monument Located at two miles south of Stockton, this monument recaps the history of the first detachment of the Army to enter the Rocky Mountain area. An overland stage was also located here between 1868 and the early 1870’s. On the north side of the monument is a slag pot used in Globe’s Chicago Smelter.

Stockton Daughters of Utah Pioneers Museum Located inside Stockton City Hall, the museum’s displays and artifacts tell the story of how the community was founded by miners in the mid1800s and briefly became a major mining center in Utah before 1900. The Wendover Airbase Museum is filled with artifacts, photographs and interpretive displays that tell the story of how the airbase played a crucial role in ending the war with Japan over 60 years ago. The museum and displays are in the Operations Building. Bonneville Salt Flats The famed 26,000 acre flats are five miles east of Wendover off of I-80. Automobile and motorcyclists converge on the Wendover area each August for the annual Bonneville Salt Flats Speed Week.
Ibapah Historical Monument On Dec. 20, 1997 the Ibapah Historical Monument was dedicated. This beautiful edifice, erected by the residents of Ibapah, includes four plaques that explain some of Ibapah’s most intriguing history, including Deep Creek Station, the Goshute Tribe, Early Settlers and the Lincoln Highway. 35

Simpson Springs Campground Location: About 60 miles southwest of Tooele City next to the famous Simpson Springs Pony Express Station. Facilities: 14 campsites with tables and fire rings. Vault toilets, but no water, hookups or garbage service. Trash must be packed out. How to get there: From Tooele City head south on SR-36 for 24 miles to Faust. Follow signs and turn right onto to Backcountry Byway, which is also the original Pony Express Trail. Road is asphalt for five miles and then becomes gravel. Proceed over Lookout Pass. Vernon Reservoir Campground Location: Approximately six miles southeast of Vernon and nearby the Sheeprock Mountains. Light, non-motorized boating is permitted on reservoir, which is stocked with trout. Facilities: Ten campsites with tables and vault toilets. No water or garbage service. Trash must be packed out. How to get there: From Tooele City proceed south on SR-36 for 30 miles to Vernon. At Vernon the state highway turns left and heads east.
