MX for a Cure

September 7th & 8th, 2012 at Deseret Peak

L

ooking to make a difference? Here’s a cause worthy of your support. Type1Racing, a local nonprofit organization is gearing up for their 4th annual MX for a Cure. You may remember Riley Jensen, a native of Tooele. He is 14 years old, loves to ride his dirt bike, and oh yeah . . . he has type 1 diabetes. MX for a Cure was his dream. Now it’s a reality. He wants to bring hope to every boy and girl out there, who struggles not only with diabetes, but with any illness, and show that life does go on. Riley has proven that not only does life go on, but it gets better! How does he do this you might wonder?? He does this

by jumping on his moto-cross bike and showing the whole world that his disease cannot and will not prevent him from living an adventurous life filled with sports, action and no limits! “Limits are in your mind” says Riley. “You gotta push yourself and make it happen” says this profound young man with a huge smile. “I learned a long time ago that things don’t come easy for anybody. Everybody has something that they are dealing with. Diabetes is mine. What’s yours?” Riley Jensen was 10 years old when he was first diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

Cure

Continued from page 1 Scared and overwhelmed with the lifelong treatment, blood checks, metering, and feeling a lack of control over his own body- he let one personality trait shine though… His Bravery. The dream started out by combining his love for racing moto-cross with a way to educate the community about type 1 diabetes, and also raising money to help find a cure. After 3 years of hard work putting on the race, “MX for a Cure,” the group known as Type1Racing has evolved into a non-profit organization to help further the charitable dreams of everyone involved. No dream can be accomplished alone- Type1Racing has put together an incredible, dedicated team that donates countless hours to raise awareness and money for type 1 diabetic education, treatment and research. We would like to extend an astounding “Thank You” to individuals and businesses who have contributed; past, present and future; as well as the commissioners, County and City of Tooele. Now get ready for some gas-fueled fun!! Type1Racing is proud to be hosting the 4th annual “MX for a Cure … Bringing the Hope” race to be held at Tooele County’s Deseret Peak Complex September 7 & 8, 2012. This event boasts generous contributions from vendors, businesses, and individuals willing to help make a difference.

Packed with fun for the whole family; the vendors, racing, door prizes, possible celebrity involvement, the presence of the entire Type1Racing team, as well as the opportunity to contribute to a worthwhile charity- this race is an event that you will not want to miss. In an effort to further expand upon Type1Racings community involvement and diabetic outreach, we have established a $5000 goal to contribute to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Walk to Cure Diabetes. The JDRF walk will be held August 25, 2012, sign ups begin at 8:30 a.m. at Liberty Park in SLC or you can donate online at www. jdrf.org/type1racing. Type1Racing will be at this walk with a booth set up with information, as well as displaying our bikes an giving you a chance to meet and talk with the riders and the rest of the Type1Racing Team. TYPE1RACING reaches out to the type 1 diabetic community by providing educational information and assistance (an eventual medical fund to help families in need of life-saving medical supplies, such as insulin, syringes, even batteries for their pumps), athletic opportunities & training. Some of our TYPE1RACING riders have also volunteered to help train type 1 diabetics, to ride and ride well. Jake Mitchell, Riley’s personal motoX trainer is the head of our athletic outreach. He has volunteered to be a “personal trainer” of sorts to type 1 diabetics. We hope this will help the families of riders with type 1 diabetes by taking a little bit of the worry out of things for them because their children will be with people educated in diabetes, and know what to do in the event of diabetes issues. For more information on Type1Racing, or to find out how you can help more, please contact us at http://www. type1racing.com If you would like information about being a vendor email: type1racing@q. com Or you can send your monetary donations to Type1Racing, 848 S. 940 W. – Tooele, Utah 84074 Riley Jensen and the entire Type1Racing Team would like to extend an invitation to anyone with a dirt bike to join the MX for a Cure. If you have never raced before, that’s ok too. The fun is in the experience. First timers through to the experienced and professional riders are welcome! Come on out and we’ll welcome you into our Type1 Family! Thanks! From the Type1Racing Team

Texas Hold’em (left) It was a hard fought battle on the poker tables. 10 teams vying for position… The poker faces were abundant in the dimly lit room in the Deseret Peak Conference Center. Competitors literally rubbed elbows with each other trying to get them to go “all in” so they could claim their chips. It was a pretty quiet crowd this year, but in the end, EnergySolutions arose from their chairs as winners in Texas Hold’em. They took both Gold and Silver, while WalMart Logistics won Bronze. Texas Hold’em - Gold Medal Winners Energy Solutions Roger Rowberry, Brandon Burr, John Nelson, JoJo Osbourne 3-on-3 Basketball (right) “Wireless Beehive Dominates... Again.” Three straight 3-on-3 Basketball Gold Medals for the Beehive Broadband team. Since the inception of the Tooele County Corporate Games, they are 12-0. Great job! The Silver medal went to Tooele City who pushed and prodded and fought hard to outplay the Tooele County School District who brought home their first medal in the Tooele Games, the Bronze. This being the TCSD’s first year, it looks like they’re going to be a team to reckon with. 3-on-3 Basketball-Gold Medal Winners Beehive Broadband Brian Barrow, Scott Wilson, Craig Morris, Jacob Warner

5 Billiards (left) It was a hard fought battle between the Gold and Silver winners in the Billiards event. The TEAD Spartans went undefeated until the EnergySolutions Isotopes came along. The Isotopes got behind the eight ball by losing to the Spartans earlier in the round, but they got their sticks on and came back to beat the Spartans twice for the Gold. Of course, the Spartans didn’t give it up easily but had to settle for the Silver while Tooele County A pocketed the Bronze. Billiards 8-ball-Gold Medal Winners Energy Solutions Jo Jo Osborne, David Larson

Volleyball (right) Tooele County A was not happy they lost... any games mind you... but they sure were all smiles in the picture of the Volleyball Bronze Winners! The Tooele County School District were undefeated until they met Tooele City, who schooled them on how to play. TCSD dug hard for the Silver as Tooele City had to beat them twice to win the Gold. Volleyball (Coed)-Gold Medal Winners Tooele City Trish Cox, Tawny Dewsnup, Adrian Day, Morgan Evans, Aracelly Garcia, Cory McKendrick, Lisa Carpenter, Cassidy Riding, Michelle Pitt, Barry Pitt

Swimming (left) Tooele City was on the beach and dry before the other teams even started the last leg of the race giving them the Gold while Tooele County A1 & 2 teams paddled their way in for Silver and Bronze respectively. Swimming-Gold Medal Winners Tooele City Chelsea Smaellie, Chase Stoddard, Skyler Smith, Kylei Riding Trap Shoot (left) Trap Shoot started the weekend off and the weather didn’t play nice. The first five teams were able to beat the rain, the next five caught the wind and a little bit of rain, but the last four were drenched before they finished shooting. With all said and done, Broken Arrow/Birch Family Pharmacy won Gold by hitting 229 out of 250 birds. Silver went to Walmart Logistics, who shot 228 and TEAD Titans A team brought home the Bronze by hitting 219 birds. Trap ShootGold Medal Winners Broken Arrow/Birch Family Pharmacy Wes Allred, Colton Allred, Kami Clarke, Jeff Ekins, Dustin Murphy

Fishing (right) Fishing got off early Saturday morning. Cargill Salt sunk the competition by 13.59 lbs. Obviously they snagged the Gold by catching eight fish weighing a total of 21.21 lbs. TEAD Titans snuck in 7.62 lbs of fish reeling in the Silver and Tooele County banked 6.16 fish for the Bronze. The largest fish was caught by Jared Anderson (Cargill Salt), a whopping 3.68 lbs, while Mandy Angelo with Walmart Logistics caught her limit in the shortest time (44 minutes). Fishing- Gold Medal Winners Cargill Salt Dirk Giles, Chad Williams, Jared Anderson

Dodgeball (above) Cargill Salt bombarded the competition by not losing a set definitely earning the Gold. Detroit Diesel caught a few wrenches, but were able to throw them back to save Silver as the Tooele County School District pulled out all the punches and survived the brutal attacks to win Bronze. Dodgeball-Gold Medal Winners Cargill Salt Jaime Hulsebusch, Travis Turgeon, Joel Lee Baker, Dirk Giles, Ryan Giles, Tony Orton, Ryan Samora

Softball (left) And then there was Softball Saturday afternoon. Weather was a little better than Friday evening, although one game was played in a slight drizzle. I’m certain the players welcomed the refreshing rain to chill them off since both teams were on a hot streak… But in the end, Tooele City batted the Gold away from Cargill Salt (who I’m sure says I jinxed them) who caught Silver while the newcomers, Detroit Diesel slid in with the Bronze. Softball (Coed)-Gold Medal Winners Tooele City Cory McKendrick, Lisa Carpenter, Aracelly Garcia, Michelle Pitt, James Lawless, Chuck Lawrence, Sam Cox, Connie Race, Ace Ruybal, Morgan Evans, Trish Cox, Cody Lopez

Present

Archery (right) There were 10 pairs of archers testing their upper body strength, trying to steady their bows to shoot an arrow in a 1” orange circle from 15 different locations. There were trees strategically placed in front of several of the targets, and distances that ranged from only a few feet from the shooter to what seemed like a mile. Arrows were crossing each other left and right as the bows released and then you’d hear the sound of the “whoosh” and then the “thump” as the arrow would hit the targets (hopefully). Poor stuffed, plastic critters. I don’t think the turkey had a chance! But in the end, Tooele County outshot the rest of the archers to win the Gold medal by damaging all 15 critters and earning 524 points combined, of which 14 were in the hot spot. EnergySolutions Nukes were close behind with 519 points with 11 perfect targets winning the Silver and Tooele City had 489 hits (with five being perfect) bringing home the Bronze. Archery-Gold Medal Winners Tooele County Lynn Higley, Ron Johnson

Sponsor Football (left) There were 17 Football teams this year. Around 85 men and women ran up and down the fields with flags on their hips trying to outrun their opponents by either carrying a little brown oblong orb or chasing it. Tooele County Deseret Peak came out on top of the pile and stood proudly holding the Gold while the TEAD Spartans put up a good fight through to the end losing by only one point. Congratulations to the Tooele County School District for sticking it out for the Bronze, another newcomer to the games. Football-Gold Medal Winners Tooele County Jeff Newton, Shane Heath, Logan Poyner, Devin Park, Jason Rollie, Robert Adams, Isaiah Arellano, Matt Hilderman

Go-Karts (right) The weather was great. A bit of a breeze flowed through the tent which was set up for pre-race briefing and where we stationed ourselves for registration and scoring reviews. Cargill Salt led the race through to the home stretch for the Gold with EnergySolutions drafting them to win Silver, followed by Tooele County B rounding the final corner for the Bronze. Go-Kart Racing (Coed)-Gold Medal Winners Cargill Salt Shane Johnson, Becky Miner, Mark Tate, Collin Smith

OVERALL WINNERS

SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD

Kickball (left) Kickball was on Saturday and it went pretty smoothly. Tooele County A had two teams entered into the event giving them 12 points for the day, with the Deseret Peak team winning the Gold. Cargill Salt enjoyed being kids so much they played the most games (7) of the day to earn the Silver while Detroit Diesel ran around the bases enough to scramble for the Bronze. Kickball (Coed)-Gold Medal Winners Tooele County/Deseret Peak Misti Williams, Devin Park, Airica Stewart, Breanna Bunderson, Shane Heath, Jason Rollie, Jeff Newton, Isaiah Arellano

1st Place: Tooele City 2nd Place: Tooele County 3rd Place: Cargill Salt Congratulations to Tooele City who won the Corporate Cup with a total of 124 points! Tooele County won 2nd place with 107 and Cargill Salt won 3rd place with 92 points. Honorable mentions go out to TEAD Spartans and EnergySolutions who tied for 4th at 90 points.

Scavenger Hunt (right) 11 teams of sleuths searched high and low, checking the internet or with friends and family and were unable to come up with just one item out of 65 on the list. Snoopy hid himself very well on an electric toothbrush and nobody could produce him at checkin time. There were three teams who were only missing one other item, all different, but each with a designated point value. EnergySolutions found the Bronze by not being able to provide a Farrah Fawcett poster for 100 points giving them 2225 points. Tooele County misplaced their 2012 Tooele County Magazine valued at 50 points and just barely edged past EnergySolutions with 2275 points to win the Silver, and TEAD Spartans could not locate an unused deer tag from 2010 worth 20 points giving them 2305 points out of a possible 2400 to win the Gold.

VOLUNTEER AWARD Horseshoes (left) Luckily, there was plenty of shade as we pitched Horseshoes Saturday morning. TEAD Spartans brought home the Gold for the 2nd year in a row. Detroit Diesel leaned in for the Silver and Tooele City had a couple of double ringers to slide home with the Bronze. Horseshoes-Gold Medal Winners TEAD Gary Porter, Kyle Porter

Unloading Your Plug Load Rocky Mountain Power; Questline

P

lug load is the energy used by electric equipment while plugged into an electrical outlet. Plug loads present a great opportunity to cut energy costs at your business. Here are some ways to get started: • Turn off equipment at night and on weekends. Just one PC shut down nightly and on weekends will save nearly $100 in annual energy costs. Even for office equipment with low-power sleep mode, you will save more energy by shutting it off. • Install power strips. This allows employees to plug multiple devices into one place and makes it easy for them to shut

off the power at the end of the workday. Be careful not to overload any single circuit. • Use sleep or standby mode. During working hours, the use of sleep or standby mode on copiers and printers will help you save significantly on energy use. • Discourage personal energy devices. Personal space heaters, task lighting and coffee makers can waste a substantial amount of energy. Discourage the use of these devices and remind employees who do use them to turn the devices off when not in use. Visit www.rockymountainpower.net/ wattsmart for more energy-saving tips and information.
