Chamber Business Expo a great success

I

t’s an annual tradition, the Taste of Tooele and Business Expo, hosted by the Tooele County Chamber of Commerce & Tourism. Each year, dozens of businesses setup booths in droves at Tooele City Park and provide a simple exposition of their products and services. They inform those who take a stroll through the park of what our own comBusiness Expo munity has to and Taste of Tooele offer; how folks can save money on gasoline by shopping locally instead of driving to the Salt Lake Valley. As committee chair Carrie Cushman, of Holiday Inn Express, stated, “Rapport was built between local businesses and residents who attended”. The Taste of Tooele is the equivalent for local food vendors too.

As with each year before, many local eateries and caterers brought delicious samples of their staple dishes. They offered a heaping plate full of food to hungry attendees for a mere five dollars! There was such an eclectic mix of food: pizza from Papa John’s, African inspired flavors from Mama Africa, Lupita’s Tacos, Cream of the Crop Cupcake Shop, Macey’s, Denny’s, Dimitri’s Cafe, samples from Allstar Lanes Grill, Good Fork Catering, and sliders from ManCave too. The smell of grilled meats, pastries, and other yummy temptations wafted through the booths and mingled in the air along with music - tempting booth attendants; but they were too engaged with prospects to leave their posts. Ron Baum, with Dead End Alley Entertainment, supplied the music and interviewed each participating business to let them give a shout-out about their services or wares.

Message from the Board

I

n light of the recent change the Board made with our Executive Director we felt it was appropriate to share a few thoughts with you, our membership. First, despite the differences and misunderstandings that seemed to distract and divert the Executive Director and Board over the last few years, we want to wish Debbie all of the best in her new endeavors and know that she will continue to be a great asset to our community. She did so much for the Chamber and we appreciate and acknowledge the great things she did while Executive Director. She has been, and will continue to be a friend to many of us. Second, the Chamber is poised and

capable to re-focus our core mission and purpose. We stand ready to be an advocate for the business community and Chamber members. We exist for you! We are you; and we are a band of owners, managers, and civic leaders who desire to run profitable businesses, give back to the community we live in, and make a difference in the lives of those around us. We have united under the banner of the Chamber of Commerce to stand up for free enterprise and industry. Third, we are committed as a Board, with the help of the Ambassador Group and the office staff to redouble our efforts in making your membership valuable. We seek to provide useful events, programs,

Expo

Continued from page 1 This year the Business Expo featured sixtythree booths, up from the fifty-eight of 2011. Likewise, the Taste of Tooele went from six featured eateries in 2011 to ten. However, public attendance was off only slightly from last year. Speculation about unexpectedly cooler temperatures and/or and the possibility of rain was thought to be responsible. Still, the prize drawings were plentiful and donors readily stepped-up to provide incentives for the attendees who took their chances with the weather. Slightly dampened numbers only increased the odds of winning a prize. “Donated prizes from the community were generous and substantial,” added Cushman. There was a wide range of businesses represented, from banking services, insurance, and party rentals, to medical supplies and cleaning services. Among the many donated prizes attendees had an opportunity of winning were flatpanel TVs from both WalMart Distribution Center and Click Audio Video, alignments from Les Schwab, one year of Grand Slam breakfasts from Denny’s, a weekend-get-away package by Holiday Inn Express, free pizza from Domino’s, and more. Of the hundreds of event-goers, there were only 108 prize cards redeemed and the odds of winning one of the prize drawings was better than one in ten. Add to that the loads of promotional items, candy, and prizes individual booths gave away and there’s little doubt that most folks left with a small bag of goodies from the event. Chamber Executive Committee member Kris King from MACU said, “My favorite part of the Expo is making it around the event to meet the various business members. Every year I end up buying something, hiring a new service, or being genuinely surprised and impressed by what some of our local businesses do for our community.” This year the biggest hit was probably the cotton candy provided by Royal Wholesale Electric. Anyone who went couldn’t help but notice as branch manager RD was covered in wisps of cotton candy all over his face. Even the Transcript Bulletin photographer had to include a picture in a recent edition of the paper. Crystal Allred, interim Chamber Director said, “RD made me smile every time I walked by.” As with each year before, the Business Expo and the Taste of Tooele owes a lot of the success to the many volunteers and donors that help make this tradition happen. Tooele City has always offered use of a park, first Veterans Memorial Park and now the Tooele City Park due to the growing turnout, use of facilities and utilities, and their staff is always very helpful. Students participating in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) at both Tooele and Stansbury High Schools helped with the set-up and tear-down of the chairs and tables for booths. And, there were several Chamber staff and members that stayed well past dark to ensure the park was cleaned-up at the end of the day. We thank all those who participated, attended, volunteered, sponsored, and donated prizes. Without your generosity this annual event wouldn’t be possible. Committee chair Carrie Cushman said it best, “The event was fun for all involved and is something to be excited for next year!” I agree, it was a success! by Shawn Milne

T

he Law Office of Spencer P. Call, PLLC opened its doors for business in August 2012 to serve individuals and businesses in the Tooele County Area. I, Spencer P. Call, am the principal owner and sole practitioner at the firm. I grew up in Tooele and graduated from Tooele High School in 1998. A decade later, after getting a bachelor’s degree from B.Y.U. and a juris doctorate from the University of Toledo College of Law, I began my legal career as an associate attorney at a downtown Salt Lake City law firm. As an associate attorney I routinely handled cases ranging from as small as a couple of thousand dollars up to a million dollars. Working in Salt Lake City was a great experience, as I was able to develop a clientele that included several businesses and individuals. I was also able to practice and gain significant experience in several areas of law, as well as interact with numerous attorneys, judges and courts along the Wasatch Front. However, in the back of my mind I always wanted to come back and practice law in my hometown and fortunately the timing to do so was just right. I take pride in the fact that I have legal

expertise in several areas of law so that I can provide quality legal services to a wider array of individuals and businesses. The main practice areas of law I focus on are family and divorce law, criminal defense, immigration law, contract disputes and bankruptcy. When someone is faced with an important legal issue, deciding whether you even need an attorney and choosing the right attorney can be a difficult task. To assist individuals and businesses in such a process, my firm offers a free 30-minute consultation to discuss and explore the available legal options. I believe that honest and sound legal advice allows my clients to make the best decision for themselves to protect their legal rights and have peace of mind. Although my firm has only been open for two months, the response I have received from the community has been overwhelmingly positive and I look forward to establishing a reputable and honest law firm here in Tooele County. Sincerely, Spencer P. Call

Ribbon Cutting: Saks Thrift Avenue

S

aks Thrift Ave has been in business for about three months. We have learned so much in the short time as new business owners. I want to take a few moments, and tell you a little bit about us, and how the store came about! Roughly two and a half years ago, my fiancé and I decided to live our lives together, and we knew we wanted to start a little family, from day one! Joe and I both worked in an open pit copper mine in Nevada, when we first met. After talking about starting a family, I knew I wanted to be a stay at home mother, and raise my children myself, rather than having a sitter. In the meantime, we started collecting together, and ended up with a whole lot of “stuff ”. We started off, by buying storage auctions, and collecting things that interested us at yard sales and other auctions. After numerous doctor visits, Joe and I found out on July 8th 2011, that our dreams were finally coming true! We were pregnant!!! We always talked about opening our own store, so we could both be around our baby, to see him grow and learn every day. We had storage units full of stuff in California, Nevada, and Utah. After Baby Joey arrived, we decided to start planting some roots somewhere. I have a lot of family in the Tooele area, and we came to visit with the baby in May. We drove down Main Street, and saw a “For Rent” sign in the window, and the rest is

history! We threw the store together in about a month, and opened the doors, to our second home, Saks Thrift Ave. We tossed around the name for a while, before deciding on Saks Thrift Ave. We wanted to send a message that we were a Thrift store, but had nice things as well.

We want our customers to know they are going to get nice things, at low prices. Since we’ve opened the doors, numerous people come in just to see what we have, and to tell me how much they LOVE the name! We’ve had the pleasure of meeting so

many people, and they share stories of their lives with us every day. I love having my own business. I love spending every minute of the day with my little family. And I love the support that we have received from the community!
