Calhoun New-look Colts a potential surprise

ith a new offensive and defensive scheme, and several fresh faces in their starting lineup, loyal Calhoun football spectators may have a hard time recognizing their Colts team this September. And as far as head coach Brian Moeller is concerned, that is a very good thing. A rather forgettable 2015 season led Moeller to make some big changes to his club this offseason. And with opening day just around the corner, he is excited with the way his team is shaping up. “We have had a very productive summer,” Moeller said. “We’ve gotten a lot of work done, and are very pleased. We’re bigger and faster too, so that’s a good thing.” Calhoun enters the fall as Conference II’s No. 10 seed. While the Colts still have much to prove, Moeller believes that if the new prostyle offense is run effectively enough, they just might be able to surprise some people. “We changed the offense up a bit, and made it more dynamic,” Moeller said. “Because of that, guys now have more responsibilities. But, if our offensive line moves people, and our trio of running backs runs behind them and our quarterback is able to run our play action plays, we’re going to be a difficult team to beat.” Leading the offense on the field will be senior quarterback Alex Cruz. Over the past few years Cruz has shown real commitment to his team, making the transition from defender to quarterback after his sophomore year, and then battling back from a torn ACL 8 — September 8, 2016

Even with three talented backs, Calhoun’s running game will only go as far as their offensive line takes it. The O-line group THOMAS CUMMINGS for the Colts is projected to be made up of Matt DeFalco, Jack Appello, Austin Olson, Dean Paoliseasons,” Moeller said. “If lo and Zach Kaminski. East Rockaway Rocks can roll despite challenging numbers

E

By ANDREW MccLURE

ast Rockaway exceeded expectations in 2015 and hosted a playoff game for the first time since 2010. Despite losing to West Hempstead in the opening round of the postseason, it was a successful year for the Rocks. Once again, the Rocks are the No. 8 seed in Nassau Conference IV, which means they face a very difficult schedule. East Rockaway will have matchups with No. 1 Seaford, No. 2 Locust Valley, the defending conference champions, No. 4 Clarke, and No. 5 West Hempstead. Low numbers are usually a problem for the Rocks, but this year there is virtually no margin for error. East Rockaway will suit up anywhere from 18 to 22 players, with nearly all starters playing both ways. With very few linemen on the roster, the team will rely heavily on a strong backfield. Russ Pajer, in his 22nd season as head coach at his alma mater, expects his team to be competitive, but knows that staying healthy will be imperative. “We’re very much like we were last season, but we don’t have the size or experience on the line,” Pajer said. “We’re going to have a real tough time battling upfront with the bigger and stronger teams in the conference. We will be competitive, because that’s just who we are. These guys just like to play football and get after it.” Tommy Rogers, who earned All-County honors as a junior at tight end, takes over at quarterback. Rogers is athletic and sees the field well. Elmont Spartans boast plenty of skill

F

By TONy BELLISSIMO

or as long as Elmont head coach Jay Hegi can remember, Conference II has never been as deep as it is this season. “I feel we’re a very talented No. 6 seed,” he said. “There could be seven or eight pretty strong teams. We expect to be better than last year, but it’s going to be an extremely competitive conference and schedule.” The Spartans split eight regular-season games in 2015 and lost to eventual county champion MacArthur in the opening round of the playoffs. Hegi is optimistic his skillful club can take a step forward come November and reach the semifinals. “We’re looking to get to Hofstra and maybe do some damage,” he explained. With senior quarterback Aaron Ruthman returning with a season of experience under his belt, one that saw him average 27 attempts per game, opposing defenses should expect a high volume of air traffic. Ruthman completed 132 of 241 passes for 2,130 yards and 23 touchdowns with 14 interceptions. “We’re probably going to throw the ball more than any other team in Nassau County,” Hegi said. “Aaron has an excellent arm and he’s going to do a better job reading defenses. He’s intelligent with a great work ethic, and he’s got an incredible cast of receivers.” While Elmont lacks game experience at wideout, Hegi said each one has something different to offer. “We’ll be praying for good weather every game so we can play to our strengths,” he said. “The first thing I said at the coach’s meeting last spring was our quarterback is returning and 18 — September 8, 2016

Senior center Chad Muscadi is the lone returning starter on the offensive line. “He’s a quality shot-gun snapper,” Hegi said. Freeport Red Devils stocked at skill positions

F

By ANDREW MccLURE

reeport got the 2015 season off to a strong start, but ran into a buzz saw in eventual conference champion Farmingdale in the final week of the regular season, and had a repeat meeting with the Dalers in the opening round of the playoffs. In each of the games, the Red Devils were able to put plenty of points on the board, but couldn’t slow down a Farmingdale offense that averaged nearly 40 points per contest. Graduation left Freeport needing to fill a lot of holes on the line on both sides of the ball, but the Red Devils are as deep at the skill positions as they’ve been in a long time. If they stay healthy, expect Freeport, along with Farmingdale, East Meadow, and Oceanside to be among the teams to beat in Nassau Conference I. Head coach Russ Cellan likes the makeup of his team. “We lost everyone on the line, but it’s been awhile since we’ve had this many guys at the skill positions who can create like this group,” Cellan said. “You’d love to have experience both on the line and at the skill positions, but if you have to pick one or the other to be strong, I’ll take it at the skill positions every time.” Quarterback Rashad Tucker is back for his third year at the helm of Freeport’s vaunted spread attack. Tucker is as remarkable an open-field runner as you’ll see at the high school level, but he is far from one-dimensional. He threw 13 touchdown passes as a junior, and, with the weapons he’ll have in 2016, opposing defenses will have their hands full. Tucker is a shutdown corner on the defensive side of the ball. 20 — September 8, 2016

Long Beach Marines pack plenty of potential

W

By TONy BELLISSIMO

ith numbers near its norm of 30, health is again the top priority for a Long Beach team looking to reach the Conference II semifinals at Hofstra a year after sneaking into the playoffs as the final seed following just a pair of regularseason victories. “For the most part, we played well shorthanded last year,” head coach Scott Martin said. “We battled through a lot of injuries. We’re bringing back a lot of talent, but it’s important we stay healthy.” The Marines, seeded fifth in the 14-team conference, open Sept. 9 under the lights at home against Herricks. Winless in five road tries in 2015, including a 24-7 firstround playoff defeat at Garden City, many of their tougher tests this season require a bus trip. Long Beach visits No. 4 Mepham, No. 3 Carey, and No. 2 Garden City. “We’ve got a lot of potential, but it’s never an easy schedule,” Martin said. “If everything falls into place, we’re expecting to have a fun and successful year.” The offense has some major pieces of the puzzle in place, led by senior quarterback Sam Brown (1,400 yards, 12 passing touchdowns), senior running back Tyreek Bromley, and senior receiver Vincent Deale. The 6-foot-1 Brown earned All-County honors a year ago and is a smart decisionmaker with a strong arm and quick enough feet to escape pressure situations. “His abilities allow us to open up the playbook,” Martin said. “There’s nothing we can’t do offensively. eaford fell just short of a county title last year and is primed for another deep postseason run. The Vikings reached the Conference IV finals for the first time since 2013 when championship hopes were dashed by Locust Valley in hard-fought 20-6 setback. Seaford lost some key pieces from last year’s 8-3 team, but the Vikings enter the new campaign seeded first in the league and head coah Rob Perpall said the potential is there for a special fall. “We go into every season with the mindset we’re going to do everything we can to win a championship,” said Perpall, who guided the Vikings to four straight county titles from 2007-10 and a Long Island championship in 2009. ‘If we play with enthusiasm we can win every game.” Seaford brings back important skilled players from last year’s explosive offense that scored 30 points or more in eight games led by senior quarterback Andrew Cain. The third-year starter has a strong arm and threw for 130 yards and a touchdown on only five pass attempts in a 43-3 victory against East Rockaway last year. “He’s really an outstanding quarterback that every team would be lucky to have,” said Perpall, who shined at quarterback at Island Trees High School and CW Post. “He has all the tools.” Cain will be handing off plenty to senior running back Danny Roell, who achieved over 2,000 yards last season despite missing one game and often getting removed early in the second half when Seaford held big leads. outh Side experienced growing pains last year with a young team and the returning players are motivated for a breakthrough 2016 season. The Cyclone seniors took a leadership role during offseason training that resulted in 11 program records broken in the weight room. “Our senior class has really taken control for the accountability of everyone on the team,” said South Side’s sixth-year head coach Phil Onesto. “Hopefully that translates into some success.” South Side boasts huge depth on the offensive line with 20 linemen on the roster. Onesto is expecting contributions from seniors Jimmy Barrett, Matthew Seganti and John Cisario along with juniors Tygah Scott, and Peter Gibney. He said many younger players who competed on JV a year ago are also in the mix to start. “There is going to be some good competition,” said Onesto, who was a wide receive on South Side’s last county title team in 2001. “It’s a good problem to have.” The line will look to protect senior quarterback Shane Batyr, who takes over as signal-caller after serving as backup last year. Batyr earned experience as starting JV quarterback two years ago and brings a strong arm to the table. “He really did a nice job transitioning from JV to varsity,” said Onesto. “We’re looking for a lot of good things out of him.” Batyr has plenty of weapons to turn to led by senior running back Jonny Pickett, who is also a strong safety on 44 — September 8, 2016

WeSt HemPSteAd Rams revamped after semifinal appearance

A

By ANDREW MccLURE

fter a disappointing 2014 season, West Hempstead had a bounce back year, finishing the regular season at 5-3 while earning the fifth seed in the Conference IV playoffs. The Rams went on to fall to top-seeded Locust Valley, the eventual county champion, in the semifinals at Hofstra. With perennial power Seaford expected to be the team to beat, No. 5 West Hempstead, along with Locust Valley, Clarke, and North Shore, should be in the hunt in a league that figures to be wide open. The Rams lost a ton of seniors to graduation, but hope that a few key returnees and newcomers from a successful JV squad will fill the void. Numbers are down at West Hempstead, leaving head coach Dom Carre with a roster of just over 20 players, but he’s happy with the work ethic of those who are committed to playing football. “These guys are throwbacks in terms of their approach,” Carre said. “They’re gym rats. They showed up every day to hit the weights, and were usually there before I even arrived to open the doors. You don’t see that very much nowadays. We have a bunch of good, tough kids who work real hard.” As always, the team’s ability to run the ball will be the key to West Hempstead’s success. Junior Timmy Shanley takes over at quarterback for the Rams. Shanley, who Carre says has improved significantly each season he’s been in the program, is an intelligent, hard-worker player who knows the system very well. Shanley was the starting signal caller on the JV in 2015. TO ADVERTISE CALL 516-569-4000
