Sisters Mila and Luna Calix are pictured at the weekly summer car show along Atlantic Avenue — a cherished tradition hosted by the Lynbrook Chamber of Commerce that fills the heart of the village with energy and neighborly spirit. Beyond the polished classic cars, the gatherings brim with activities and camaraderie. Mila and Luna delighted in adding their own creative touch to the weekly mural painting, a community masterpiece that will soon find its home at Lynbrook Village Hall.

As your Mayor, it is a privilege to serve and represent the people of Lynbrook — where tradition, progress and community spirit come together in a truly special way.
A Village with an ideal location and timeless charm
Lynbrook is home to over 20,000 residents and enjoys an ideal location — just 35 minutes by train to Manhattan and 15 minutes to the beaches of the Atlantic. Despite being close to one of the largest metropolitan centers on Earth, we remain a village where neighbors know each other by name, families establish roots across generations and our tree-lined streets retain the storybook feel of yesteryear.

As Mayor of the Village of East Rockaway, it’s my pleasure to reflect on what makes our community such a special place to live. Rooted in a rich nautical history and located just a short ride from Metro New York and local airports, East Rockaway offers the best of both worlds: small-town charm and big-city convenience.
Our village is known for its exceptional quality of life. Whether you’re strolling along the waterfront, shopping in our commercial corridors, attending a concert in the park, fishing at the boat basin or spending time with neighbors at one of our many community events, you can feel the warmth and pride that defines East Rockaway. Our community is where people know their neighbors and take care of one another — a true hometown in every sense of the word.
We are proud to offer top-tier municipal services with low tax burden that help keep our community running smoothly. Our Public Works, Building and Recreation Departments, as well as Clerk’s office and Emergency Services are staffed by professionals who are committed to maintaining the safety, cleanliness and integrity of our village. From infrastructure improvements to responsive sanitation and snow removal, we work every day to provide high-quality services that residents can count on.
East Rockaway also takes pride in providing programs and activities for residents of every age. Our Recreation Department offers youth sports, summer camps, senior programming and events throughout the year that
bring our community together.
The Summer Concert Series, Fall Festival, Winter Lightings and active community and fraternal organizations — like East Rockaway Kiwanis, American Legion and VFW Posts, PTA and religious groups — reflect the vibrant civic life we enjoy. Each strengthen our connections to each other and help create the close-knit, service-oriented spirit that defines East Rockaway.
No matter the season, our waterfront areas, marina and shoreline neighborhoods continue to be places where residents gather, boat, fish and relax. This maritime legacy remains a point of pride for our community and a reminder of our enduring connection to the water.
Perhaps most impressive is that all of this is delivered with a relatively low tax burden. We are one of the most fiscally responsible villages in the area, providing high-quality services and amenities without overburdening our taxpayers. Our residents benefit from smart, conservative budgeting that ensures long-term stability and value.

The “Experience Lynbrook” has been very successful every year. We had a great turnout and a wonderful time. Summer then kicked off with our Pre-Prom Celebration on Atlantic Avenue. Our village came out to celebrate our graduating seniors on their special day.You can also join us for family fun and entertainment at our Cruise Nights every Thursday
through August.
Casino Night is another funfilled evening in September. Come out and try your luck at one of our tables while enjoying delicious food and drinks. Our Annual “Evening of Excellence” in January is a wonderful event where we honor some of the most inspiring members of our village and swear in our new officers and board members.

Behind the scenes, a network of dedicated volunteers and business leaders work tirelessly to uplift neighbors, support local causes and keep village life thriving year-round. Whether you’re new to the area or simply looking to give back, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved in and make a meaningful impact. Here are three standout organizations in Lynbrook and East Rockaway— and how you can be part of their mission.
Lynbrook Kiwanis Club: Service Through Fellowship
For decades, the Lynbrook Kiwanis Club has embodied the spirit of "serving the children of the world" through hands-on community work and charitable giving. Part of the global Kiwanis International network, the Lynbrook chapter is composed of local volunteers who are committed to making a difference both locally and internationally. East Rockaway Kiwanis Club members collected nonperishable goods during a community food drive last October, supporting both local veterans and a pediatric center in need — a heartfelt effort to serve those who’ve served and care for our youngest neighbors.
East Rockaway Kiwanis Club: Small Village, Big Heart
Much like it's Lynbrook counterpart, the East Rockaway Kiwanis Club is rooted in service with a unique flair that reflects the village’s close-knit character. The club plays a central role in many East Rockaway events and initiatives, from organizing food collections and clothing drives to supporting youth programs and emergency response efforts. One of its most well-known contributions is its support of local schools and student leadership programs. Whether hosting recognition dinners for student volunteers or raising funds for scholarships, the East Rockaway Kiwanis Club is invested in shaping the future of its young residents.
Kiwanis also partners with other community organizations for seasonal events like Trunk or Treat, the Easter celebration and more often providing the 'volunteer power' that makes these moments happen. Members describe the club as a “second family” and a deeply fulfilling way to stay engaged with village life.

While Kiwanis clubs emphasize service, the Lynbrook Chamber of Commerce focuses on helping the village thrive economically and socially. Representing dozens of local businesses— from mom-and-pop shops to professional services— the Chamber is a vital part of the village’s economic engine and a consistent driver of community engagement. The Chamber organizes some of Lynbrook’s most beloved public events, including the downtown car shows, holiday celebrations and networking mixers that support both local businesses and residents. Mount Sinai South Nassau is Improving Health Care on the South Shore
The new Fennessy Family Emergency Department at Mount Sinai South Nassau doubles the size of our previous emergency department, o ering 54 private exam rooms with clear lines of sight for physicians, nurses, and support sta . Our new emergency department also o ers a separate triage area, dedicated areas for children and behavioral health patients, and has been designed to reduce wait times and improve patient outcomes.
The Fennessy Family Emergency Department is located within the new Feil Family Pavilion, opening later this year, which will have 40 new critical care suites and nine new operating rooms, designed to support the most complex surgeries on the South Shore.

In the late 1800s, a group of East Rockaway women including Olive Denton, Robert Davison, Amelia and Irene Davison,
Carman, and Ida and Hattie Hewlett began informally sharing books. Their grassroots effort grew into a community library, with books loaned from a table in the post office within the Hewlett Store then located at Ocean Avenue and Main Street.

From July through August, the Lynbrook Chamber of Commerce hosts it's popular car shows that transform the village into a hotspot for automotive nostalgia. Classic and custom vehicles lined up along Atlantic Avenue, attracting car enthusiasts from across Long Island. The shows aren’t just for gearheads — they also serve as fun, family-friendly evenings filled with music, food trucks and local vendors. Stroll past rows of gleaming chrome, chat with owners about their prized rides and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of Lynbrook’s tight-knit downtown.

Mayor’s Golf Outing –Aug. 11
A long-standing tradition in Lynbrook, the annual Mayor’s Golf Outing brings together golfers for a day of friendly competition and civic pride. This event, often held at one of Nassau County’s premier golf courses, is more than just a round of golf— it’s a fundraiser that supports various local initiatives. The funds go toward the Lynbrook Community Chest, which aids underserved Lynbrook residents. Participants enjoy breakfast, 18 holes of golf, raffles and a postgame luncheon where village officials and residents mingle. Whether you're aiming for a hole-in-one or just along for the networking, the outing is a perfect blend of sport and community support.
Oktoberfest at Greis Park –Sept. 27
Fall kicks off in festive fashion with the Oktoberfest celebration at Greis Park. This seasonal event blends traditional German flair with local flavor, featuring entertainment, bratwurst, soft pretzels and craft brews. Families are welcome to enjoy lawn games, inflatables for the kids and performances in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. Casino Night – Nov. 6
One of the most anticipated events of the year is the Lynbrook Chamber of Commerce’s Casino Night. This evening of entertainment and fundraising brings the glitz of Vegas to the heart of the village. Attendees try their luck at blackjack, poker and roulette — and all for a good cause. Tickets cost $95, including food, an open bar and $200 worth in chips. Instead of betting money, the event features raffles, giving attendees a chance to win exciting prizes. Hosted in a festive, high-energy setting, Casino Night is a fun way to support local businesses and enjoy a night out with friends and neighbors.
Village of Lynbrook Christmas Lighting –December 2025
When winter rolls in, the village kicks off the holiday season with its cherished Christmas Lighting celebration. Held downtown, residents enjoy the lighting of the village tree, entertainment, carolers and seasonal treats like hot cocoa and cookies. Santa Claus makes a special appearance, delighting children and bringing holiday magic to the evening.
Families gather to share in the joy, creating warm memories that last well beyond the season. It’s a beautiful reminder of how the village comes together to celebrate what matters most — community, connection and tradition.

Lynbrook Union Free School District
Lynbrook Union Free School District serves students from kindergarten through 12th grade, covering most of the Village of Lynbrook and portions of East Rockaway, Hewlett, Valley Stream and Malverne. The district has around 2,760 students. It is consistently rated among the top districts in New York with high marks for academics, teacher and college preparation. The superintendent is Paul J. Lynch.

HurriCon – Fall 2025
East Rockaway’s homegrown comic convention, HurriCon, is unlike any other on Long Island. Billed as New York’s only “benefit-relief comic con,” the event blends pop culture celebration with a strong community mission. Founded in 2018 by David Donovan at Bethany Congregational Church, HurriCon started as a fundraiser for repairs after Hurricane Sandy — and quickly evolved into a vibrant, inclusive event celebrating comics, science fiction, gaming and creativity in all its forms. Guests can browse vendor tables packed with collectibles, meet local artists and authors and enjoy cosplay contests, panels and more. The church auditorium transforms into a sci-fi emporium, welcoming comic lovers of all ages, backgrounds and identities. As Donovan says, “When you walk through that door, it doesn’t matter who you are — you are welcome here.” It’s a one-of-a-kind con with heart, and a must-attend for fans and families alike.

Haunted Grist Mill
– October 2025
When spooky season arrives in East Rockaway, the historic Grist Mill Museum becomes the centerpiece of fright during the annual Haunted Grist Mill event. In October, guests can brave the full haunted experience as the mill transforms into a spine-tingling walk-through of scares and surprises.
Additionally, younger children can enjoy a “Not Too Spooky” version, offering a gentler Halloween experience perfect for younger ghouls. Later that evening, the full haunted experience returns for brave visitors.
Hosted by the East Rockaway Historical Society and local volunteers, it blends eerie fun with local heritage, giving families a festive way to enjoy Halloween while celebrating one of the village’s most iconic landmarks. Enter if you dare…
Trunk or Treat – October 2025
Organized by the Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Centre, Trunk or Treat is a fun, interactive Halloween experience that’s perfect for families with young children. This hands-on activity allows kids to safely explore and discover all kinds of vehicles — from fire trucks and police cruisers to construction equipment and more — while collecting candy from creatively decorated car trunks. Costumes are encouraged, and smiles are guaranteed.
It’s a great alternative (or addition) to traditional trick-ortreating and helps foster meaningful connections between local families, first responders and the wider community.
East Rockaway Historical Society and Grist Mill
get in the Halloween spirit, weloming residents of all ages for some seasonal fun. Once a grist mill, now a museum, this 325-year-old mill was burned by an arsonist in 1990 and has been completely restored.

It’s a lighthearted, joy-filled morning that reflects the village’s commitment to creating meaningful moments for its youngest residents.

Huckleberry Frolic –Summer 2026
History and fun collide at East Rockaway’s annual Huckleberry Frolic, held at the historic Grist Mill Museum. Guests can enjoy historical reenactments, food booths, pony rides and games for kids — all while learning about the heritage of the area. The Frolic brings hundreds of residents and visitors to Memorial Park each June and continues to be a signature celebration of East Rockaway's roots.

This year has been a landmark chapter for the Lynbrook Public Library — a historic gem revived by community passion and poised for new recognition. With its nomination to both the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places, the nearly century-old institution stands as a testament to architectural beauty and civic purpose. And it's not just history on display — the library’s modern energy, community programs and youthful spirit keep it both relevant and vital today.
A historic win and community triumph
On March 21, Governor Kathy Hochul approved the nomination of the Lynbrook Public Library for both state and national historic registers. The library became the only location on Long Island to receive this nomination among 20 recognized sites across New York State.
Designed by renowned architect Hugh Tallant, best known for iconic New York City theaters like the Brooklyn Academy of Music and New Amsterdam Theatre, the library was completed in 1929. Its neoclassical façade, featuring carvings of the goddess Athena and original 1929 lampposts, reflects Tallant’s architectural vision and enduring symbolism of wisdom and light.

The library, a 1929 architectural treasure, stands proudly at the heart of the village. Recently nominated for state and national historic recognition, it's thriving as a vibrant center for learning, connection and community.
From crisis to preservation
The library’s survival owes much to community resolve. In 1985, it faced demolition due to size constraints just 9,000 square feet including the basement and safety concerns. But residents voted 61 percent in favor of preserving and expanding the building, handing a victory to heritage over relocation. By 1992, a carefully designed 11,000 square foot addition complemented the original structure and ensured the library’s continued role as a community cornerstone.
The nomination effort began in 2020. It was led by Village Administrator John Giordano and Adult Librarian Kathleen Curran, inspired by both Tallant’s architectural legacy and the library’s foundational roots in early women’s organizations that valued literacy, including the local women’s suffrage groups that launched in 1913.
A living institution, energized by youth
Library Director Robyn Gilloon puts it simply:
“It’s a beautiful building, and beautiful in its architecture… we still live by the standard ideology set back in 1929.”
That ideology community access, learning and gathering shines in the everyday presence of young library pages who keep the stacks organized and bring fresh perspective to the institution.
Three high school alumni Kerry Cullen, Chloe Brown and Nora Kane work as paid pages, shelving materials, helping with events and interacting daily with patrons. Brown, former book club president in high school, emphasizes how young staff help children connect with reading.
“It brings out the joy in the kids using the library.”
Assistant Director Kathy Buchsbaum notes that engaging youth ensures the library’s relevance:“Young people are the future… we need to keep the young people engaged.”

Programs bring the library to life
Even without exhaustive listings, the library’s 2025 calendar shows a vibrant range of offerings. From Book Club meetings and discussions, to mini art show receptions, family book kick-off dances and Dungeons & Dragons nights, the library nurtures creativity and connection for all ages. Summer programs like Chi Gong,Yoga Kids and Family Craft Build & Play signal a commitment to wellness, play and intergenerational engagement.
What’s next — and why it matters
With the historic nomination pending final approval, Giordano notes grant opportunities could help fund necessary stonework restoration, potentially amounting to several hundred thousand dollars. Should the library gain official listing status, it would unlock new preservation funding and bolster Lynbrook’s proud architectural legacy.
For Gilloon, the nomination underscores what Lynbrook residents have always known: the library is a “jewel” not just because of its design, but because of the people who made and continue to sustain it. From its origins with the suffragist-led Friday Club to today’s young pages and public programs, the library stands as a model of resilience, service and civic pride.
