A letter from the

PUBLISHER

Dear Neighbor,

Welcome to the 5 Towns Community Guide. Consider this your go-to resource for all that makes Hewlett, Woodmere, Cedarhurst, Lawrence, and Inwood, along with Atlantic Beach, such vibrant, welcoming and thriving communities to call home. From their rich history to their vibrant present, these are diverse neighborhoods defined by warmth, connection and a true sense of belonging.

We are pleased to present this special annual supplement to the Nassau Herald and to continue our tradition of publishing the 5 Towns Community Guide — a publication designed to celebrate, inform and connect us all. Whether you have been a resident for decades or have recently arrived here, this guide serves as your gateway to local resources and opportunities.

Within these pages, you will discover what makes our communities distinctive and inspiring, including:

• Essential events and activities throughout the year

• An overview of our parks — our neighborhood hubs

• A look at how our schools prepare future generations

• Lifelong learning and resources at the libraries

This year’s cover celebrates the love and acceptance that make our communities special. Five Towns residents are pictured at the weekly summer concert series — a cherished tradition hosted by the Village of Cedarhurst that fills Andrew J. Parise Cedarhurst Park with music and lively spirit. Beyond the gazebo and playground, the park brims with families and camaraderie. Residents of all backgrounds gathered for “A Night of Jewish Music” in August, one of eight themed concerts that include “A Night of Irish Music,” “A Night of Italian Music” and “An Evening of Country Music.”

We recognize the dedication of the Cedarhurst Business Improvement District and the Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association, which both play an essential role in supporting local businesses and fostering community connections year-round. From organizing Arts Below Sunrise and the Sidewalk Sale, to hosting community events and school fundraisers such as Kids Night Out, the Cedarhurst BID and Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association consistently create opportunities for connection and economic growth. Their efforts ensure that the Five Towns remain vibrant and our community spirit remains strong throughout every season.

This guide is produced in partnership with the Cedarhurst Business Improvement District and the Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association and we are honored to serve as their official publication.

We trust you will find the 5 Towns Community Guide both informative and inspiring — and we thank you for making the Nassau Herald part of your week, every week.

P.S. If you're not currently receiving the Nassau Herald by mail each week, please help keep quality local journalism alive in your community by subscribing. See our ad on Page 48 for subscription information, or find us online at LIHerald.com/subscribe, or call (516) 569-4000, ext. 7.

Dear Residents:

The Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association was formed to bring together merchants and professionals conducting business in the hamlets of Hewlett and Woodmere — including North Woodmere — served by School District 14.

Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association members support programs throughout the school district, local organizations and civic associations. We aim to foster awareness from adjoining communities as to our merchandise, activities and services offered in the two hamlets. The Business Association gives our members daily social media advertising posts. We do ribbon cuttings for new businesses.

We enjoy the support of Town Council Member Melissa Miller, Nassau County Legislature Presiding Officer Howard Kopel, County Executive Bruce Blakeman, Town of

Hempstead Clerk Kate Murray, State Sen. Patricia CanzoneriFitzpatrick, and Assemblyman Ari Brown. These public officials and our residents are the ones who look to an active business association to make our community a more attractive place to reside. The Business Association is an integral part of the community. We hold Christmas and Hanukkah celebrations and other community events at our Veterans Memorial Plaza. We organize the Memorial Day Parade and sponsor Kids Night Out, as well as other activities.

Our award-winning school district, excellent library and shopping areas are what help unite us as a vibrant community. We invite you to eat in our local restaurants, shop our boutiques and use our service businesses to help us remain a strong business hub.

Warm regards,

The Five Towns is more than just a scenic corner of Long Island’s South Shore — it’s a vibrant community where neighbors come together to celebrate all year long. From summer concerts in the park to holiday gatherings that light up the season, events appeal to every age and interest. Whether you enjoy lively street festivals, cultural celebrations or time-honored local traditions, the Five Towns is filled with moments that bring people closer and create lasting memories.

Inwood Santa Marina Feast – July

Each summer, Inwood bursts with tradition and celebration during the Santa Marina Feast — a two-day carnival and religious tribute hosted by the Santa Marina Society, now more than 100 years strong. Held the second weekend of July, the event honors Santa Marina, the patron saint of Filandari, a small town in Italy’s Calabria region from which many local families trace their roots. Everyone enjoys lively music, classic carnival games, thrilling rides and mouthwatering Italian food on Friday and Saturday nights. At the heart of the weekend is a deep sense of faith, with Novena masses at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, followed by a special Italian mass and a solemn procession through the streets carrying the saint’s statue.

Hewlett-Woodmere Arts Below Sunrise – May

Each spring, Broadway in Hewlett and Woodmere transforms into a lively celebration of creativity and community during the annual Arts Below Sunrise festival — the largest outdoor event in the Five Towns. Now in its 12th year, the street fair stretches from the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library to Franklin Place, drawing crowds with its mix of music, STEAM activities, food and family fun. Presented by the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Schools Endowment Fund, with support from the Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association, this year’s event embraced a “Star Wars” theme in honor of “May the Fourth,” complete with appearances by Darth Vader and a storm trooper. Entertainment, robotics demos, a petting zoo, and hands-on science experiments make it a can’t-miss day for families, students and folks of all ages.

Hewlett-Woodmere Memorial Day Parade – May

The HewlettWoodmere Memorial Day Parade is an annual community event proudly honoring the men and women who lost their lives while serving in the United States military. The parade begins at the Woodmere firehouse on Irving Place and travels along Broadway to Hewlett High School. Local organizations, student groups — including the HewlettWoodmere Public Schools marching band — civic groups, scout troops, veterans, first responders, and fire departments all participate. It concludes with a postparade ceremony and community gathering at the high school, bringing residents together in remembrance and patriotic celebration.

Cedarhurst Sidewalk Sale – August

Cedarhurst's Summer Sidewalk Sale is an annual four-day shopping extravaganza hosted by the village’s Business Improvement District, transforming Central Avenue into a hub of bargains and community activity. Known as the South Shore’s fashion center for more than a century, Cedarhurst draws shoppers from the Five Towns, across Long Island and even neighboring states to explore discounts from more than 80 participating stores. Sidewalks are lined with racks of clothing, tables of sale items and unique finds from local boutiques, offering everything from fashion and jewelry to home goods and gifts. The Sidewalk Sale not only boosts local business but also reinforces Cedarhurst’s reputation as a vibrant shopping destination with fully occupied storefronts and a diverse mix of merchants.

Rock Hall Country Fair – October

Rock Hall Country Fair is a two-day celebration of early America, held at historic Rock Hall Museum in Lawrence on the third weekend of October. The fair highlights colonial life with historical demonstrations, crafts and entertainment, while also blending in fall traditions that include a pumpkin patch, scarecrow-making and pony rides. Now in its 39th year, the fair draws more than 1,000 visitors to explore one of Long Island’s oldest surviving Georgian homes and connect the past with the present.

Looking to make a difference in the Five Towns? Whether you're passionate about community service, advocacy or supporting local initiatives, there are plenty of ways to get involved.

Here are some great organizations to consider:

Join the Inwood Civic Association

The Inwood Civic Association is dedicated to advocating for local residents and enhancing the community. The group meets the first Thursday of each month at 8 p.m. at Sons of Italy Hall on Wanser Avenue. A stone memorial honors the Inwood Civic Association and those who serve to protect their community as police officers and volunteer fire fighters, donated by Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg in 1998. The association plays an important role in community engagement and recognizing local service members in Inwood, supporting the hamlet's civic life and community partnerships with local emergency services and elected officials.

Volunteer with the Marion & Aaron Gural JCC

Marion & Aaron Gural JCC is a community center that serves people of all ages in the Greater Five Towns through varied offerings including Jewish culture, recreation, education, and socialization. The JCC welcomes tweens, teens, adults of all ages and families to assist in ongoing programs, participate in special one-time service projects or contribute professional skills. Specific volunteer opportunities include the Friendly Visiting program where volunteers spend time with seniors in their homes on a weekly basis to engage in conversation and activities.

To volunteer, contact the Volunteer Services Manager, Laurie Stone Brofsky, at (516) 569-6733 ext. 205 or at laurie.brofsky@guraljcc.org.

Make a difference with the Kiwanis Club of the Five Towns

Kiwanis Club of the Five Towns is an active community service organization that has been serving the area for over 75 years. Kiwanis is known for its community engagement, including honoring Nassau County police officers and civilian crime analysts at their annual Police Officer Appreciation Night. Like all Kiwanis Clubs, it focuses on serving children and the community through volunteer efforts. The Five Towns Kiwanis operates as part of the larger Kiwanis network, which consists of local groups of volunteers dedicated to making a difference and strengthening their communities through various service projects and charitable initiatives.

Support small businesses with the Community Chest South Shore

The Community Chest South Shore has deep historical roots in the Five Towns area. Founded in 1931, it was also known as Five Towns Community Chest before rebranding as Community Chest South Shore in 2016 to expand into surrounding South Shore communities. Today, the organization continues its charitable mission, recently making a significant commitment to the local business community. Community Chest is making an impact by committing to loan $1 million interest-free to qualifying small businesses in the Five Towns. The organization partners with other local groups to provide essential services, including food assistance and support for neighbors experiencing financial hardship.

of Best the Parks in the

hether it’s the scenic views at Andrew J. Parise Cedarhurst Park, the recreational facilities at North Woodmere Park or the walking paths in Inwood Park, all serve as vital green spaces for residents to relax.

As the demand for public outdoor space continues to grow, these parks have become more than just spots for leisure — they’re hubs of local life.

Andrew J. Parise Cedarhurst Park

Andrew J. Parise Park — often simply called Cedarhurst Park — is the centerpiece of the Village of Cedarhurst, offering a beautifully maintained green space right off Cedarhurst Avenue.

At just under five acres, it combines manicured landscaping with functional amenities, all designed to serve the needs of the community. Visitors enjoy walking and jogging paths winding through lush lawns, sports facilities, including a basketball/handball court and baseball field, plus a playground. Its signature gazebo anchors the park visually and socially — host to Cedarhurst’s long-running “Under the Gazebo” summer concert series, a free Tuesday evening musical tradition that draws thousands in July and August.

Herald File Photo Cedarhurst Park has been a staple of the Five Towns since the early 1990s. It was renamed Andrew J. Parise Cedarhurst Park in 2011 in honor of the former mayor.

Grant Park

Grant Park, a Nassau county park, in Hewlett covers roughly 35 acres and stands out as a well-rounded recreational hub within the Five Towns.

The park features three synthetic baseball and softball fields — lighted and fully enclosed for organized youth leagues — plus adjacent basketball, tennis, handball/paddleball courts, and horseshoe and shuffleboard areas, along with an adult fitness station with rowing, step-climbing and skiing apparatus.

It's also home to a seasonal ice skating rink that operates throughout the winter, offering public sessions seven days a week, with extended evening hours on weekends. Residents can also fish along designated areas of the six-acre Grant Park Pond, which is surrounded by a paved one-mile walking loop that provides a scenic and relaxing route for walkers, joggers and families alike.

North Woodmere Park

North Woodmere Park, also a county facility, is a major athletic destination in the Five Towns for an array of athletes, offering a wide range of lighted sports facilities for residents.

The park includes 10 lighted tennis courts, six handball/paddleball courts and two basketball courts, ensuring plenty of options for racquet ball and court sports. Golfers enjoy a 9-hole, par-30 course and a lighted driving range.

There's also an Olympic-sized pool, a diving pool with boards and a large water slide — open from late June through early September. Younger swimmers can enjoy a training pool, a wading pool and an interactive water-play area with ground sprays, water guns and spray jets — all tied to a play structure.

North Woodmere Park hosts free outdoor movie nights under the stars throughout the summer, a beloved community staple.

Inwood Park

Nestled at the end of Bayview Avenue in Inwood, another county park, Inwood Park spans 16 acres of waterfront greenery and recreational amenities.

Around the perimeter, there is a waterside jogging and walking path that offers a flat, stroller- and bike-friendly route with views of the bay. The park also offers saltwater fishing, crabbing, boating, and a Blueway Trail launch point for kayakers (permit required).

The Inwood Marina is a seasonal operation running from mid-April through mid-November. With 66 boat slips, a launch ramp for boats up to 21 feet, and limited transient slip availability, it's tailored for both regular and visiting boaters.
