Throughout the crisis, the Malverne / West Hempstead Herald remained steadfast in informing everyone of the impact of the pandemic, and also all of the great things individuals, stores, police, firefighters, schools and community leaders were doing to keep moving forward. Herald reporters were at meetings, and talking to you and your neighbors, to paint a portrait of a village and hamlet that may have struggled at times, but communities that are also winning.

The past two years were tough for Malverne and West Hempstead, but its always-resourceful people came through once again, just as we did in Hurricane Sandy's wake in Neighbors2012. helping neighbors. That’s what Malverne and West Hempstead is all about. And what it continues to be. We looked out for each other all through the Covid-19 crisis. Everyone stepped up during this challenging time: grocery stores and other necessary retailers, community organizations, civic leaders, local officials, etc. And we can never thank enough our health care workers for their selfless dedication. Now we understand just how resilient we, as a community, are.

Stuart Richner

The pandemic tested all of us beyond our limits. Malverne and West Hempstead, however, remains strong. It is a village and a hamlet full of fighters, and as the pandemic shifts to endemic stage and we fully resume our lives, we are all reinvigorated and re-energized.

At the heart of West Hempstead’s slice of Cathedral Gardens is St. Thomas the Apostle Church, a Roman Catholic parish. St. Thomas recently welcomed a new priest, as the church’s previous pastor, Monsignor Francis Maniscalso, stepped down after over a decade of service. The new pastor, Anthony Stanganelli, likely took the same drive down Westminster Road to get to his new parish, previously serving at St. Brigid’s Church in Westbury. Stanganelli brings an extensive background in theological education to his new post, having studied at Cathedral College in Huntington and Gregorian Pontifical University in Rome, among other bona fides.Stanganelli delivered his first Sunday service on July 3, expounding on his well-defined views on faith and pastoral care. To West Hempstead’s Catholic community — which stands at just over 50 percent of the town’s residents, according to BestPlaces.net

The enduring charm of Hall's Pond

Last April, Nassau County Legislators John Giuffré and Laura Schaefer arranged a cleanup to in celebration of Earth Day.

C

oming off of the Southern State Parkway into West Hempstead, travelers are immediately greeted by a peninsula of grass and trees extending southward between Hempstead Avenue and Nassau Boulevard. Formed by Mill River flowing south toward Rockville Centre, Hall's Pond has been a notable feature of the West Hempstead area since at least the late 1800s.Changing hands and names a number of times throughout the early 20th century, the pond and surrounding land was eventually bought up by Nassau County in the late 1950s before Hall's Pond Park was formally dedicated in 1961.Today, the park has walking paths weaving through the paths and trees surrounding the pond dotted with memorials to veterans and first responders, including a piece of the World Trade Center towers.

An excellent gathering space for the community, the park occasionally holds events like live music that all ages can enjoy. The park doesn’t stay in its pristine condition in a vacuum. Twice a year, local officials organize a park cleanup, where residents come together with their rakes, gloves and shears to ensure Hall's Pond remains a point of community pride.

In 1956, the government purchased the Hall’s Farm and estate to construct Cornwell Avenue School. Colonists in the West Hempstead area declared their loyalty to George III in 1775

In 1975, a referendum was held to change the name of West Hempstead to “Mayfair Park,” which failed.

West Hempstead was given its name in 1891 by LIRR president Austin Corbin. Norwood Chapel was built and began holding services in 1890, for decades as the sole location for public assembly. Prominentpoliticiansbusinessmen, andartists, established opulent mansions and estates at the eastern end of Cornwell Avenue in the early 1900s. The George Washington School was named in 1932, honoring the bicentennial of Washington’s birth, and commemorating his tour of Long Island in 1790.
