The past two years have been tough for Lynbrook and East Rockaway, but its always-resourceful people came through once again, just as we did after Hurricane Sandy's wake in Neighbors2012. helping neighbors. That’s what Lynbrook and East Rockaway is all about. And what it continues to be. We looked out for each other all through the Covid-19 crisis. Grocery stores and other necessary retailers stepped up during this challenging time, their employees working long shifts under difficult conditions. And we can never thank enough our health care workers for their selfless dedication. Now we understand just how resilient we, as a community, are.
Throughout the crisis, the Lynbrook/East Rockaway Herald has remained steadfast in informing everyone of new cases, hospitalizations, and also all of the great things individuals, stores, police, firefighters, schools and community leaders were doing to keep the two villages moving. Herald reporters were at meetings, and talking to you and your neighbors, to paint a portrait of a village that may have struggled at times, but one that also is winning. Richner Communications, which owns the Herald, was proud to do its part, too. Richner offered thousands of businesses marketing grants so that the merchants — the lifeblood of the community — could carry on. Now we are turning the corner, with vaccines and medical advances in our arsenal. Thankfully, eight out of every 10 people in Nassau County are fully vaccinated.Inthisedition of our annual Living In Lynbrook and East Rockaway, we look at all that is wonderful about Lynbrook and East Rockaway. A special publication of your hometown newspaper, it’s published in cooperation with the Lynbrook Chamber of Commerce. We are honored to mark another year as the chamber's official publication. We hope you find this issue useful and informative, and that you enjoy reading the Lynbrook/East Rockaway Herald 52 weeks a year. Be well and be safe. Stuart PublisherRichner P.S. The pandemic tested all of us beyond our limits. Lynbrook and East Rockaway, however, remains strong. It is a community full of fighters, and as the pandemic shifts to endemic stage and restrictions fully lifted, Lynbrook and East Rockaway are reinvigorated and re-energized.

LIVING IN LYNBROOK / EAST ROCKAWAY 2022-2023 6 www.liherald.com
It has been my honor to serve as the president of the Lynbrook Chamber of Commerce for the past 18+ months. As a business owner and a long time resident of the village of Lynbrook I am so grateful for the opportunity to run our great organization. The job of the president can be overwhelming and no one person can handle it alone. I would be remiss If I did not thank the rest of the Chamber board for all the work they do to keep the Chamber of Commerce moving forward. The goal of the Chamber of Commerce is to help the Lynbrook business community continue to thrive. We have been fortunate to welcome many new businesses into the village within the past year. We continue to see more and more vacant store fronts being filled by unique and exciting new businesses. We are very excited to see real estate development within the village as well. Anyone who has driven past the site of the old feather factory building will no longer see the abandoned eyesore that has sat vacant for far too long. We are confident that the construction of the new state of the art apartment building will help to bolster and further expand the retail and dining options available to the community. These developers could have chosen to go anywhere on Long Island and they have chosen Lynbrook. They see the value in our prime South Shore location that still maintains that small-town feel that we all have come to know and love about Lynbrook. We look forward to welcoming the new residents who will inhabit those apartments and patronize our local businesses.

The Chamber understands that in order to have a strong economic environment we must have a strong community. We are truly blessed to have leaders, business owners, educators, and citizens who realize that we all share in the responsibility of creating economic success and happiness within our Thecommunity.Chamber has the absolute pleasure of celebrating with all our members! Whether that is a ribbon cutting for a new or relocated business, an anniversary, our networking mixers, or exciting events around town, we look forward to supporting and celebrating with you!

Lynbrook’s residential neighborhoods are noted for retaining a distinct “pre-war” architecture of beautiful homes including tudors, Colonials, cape cods, and craftsman-style homes, many of which have been renovated and expanded to meet the needs of the present day while maintaining their historic character. The Lynbrook Building Department plays an important role in ensuring all construction and buildings within the village meet safety requirements, while our architectural review board is committed to ensuring our village retains its beautiful character. Our Public Works department is committed to maintaining and enhancing the lives of our residents through road and infrastructure maintenance, ornamental plantings, trash pickup and much more. The Recreation Center at Greis Park offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities throughout the year for all ages, including sports, classes, clubs and events. The village pool is a destination for many during the warm summer months and a new turf field, providing a big stage for local sporting events, now also anchors the complex. The grounds also host many events throughout the year, including Oktoberfest, the Lynbrook Carnival, and charity events. We have a vibrant and robust business community providing a multitude of goods and services for our residents along the downtown corridor and beyond. Many vacant or underused buildings have been transformed into prosperous new ventures including a new movie theater, restaurants, coffee shops, medical facilities, luxury living spaces and more. On behalf of the village and board of trustees, it’s my great pleasure to extend the warmest of greetings whether you are a new resident or have been here many generations.
As your Mayor, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Incorporated Village of Lynbrook and all we have to offer. Our village of nearly 20,000 residents are situated with quick and easy access to the hustle and bustle of New York City and the sandy beaches of the Atlantic Ocean, while living in a small-town environment where neighbors help neighbors, old established trees line our historic residential blocks, and families establish roots over many generations.
Lynbrook is consistently ranked as one of the safest municipalities in New York State, which is a testament to how residents look out for each other and the hard work of our first responders, including our village police and fire departments.

T he end of Wilbur Street in Lynbrook is home to many of the village's annual traditions and summer activities. Lynbrook’s Greis Veterans Memorial Park includes a lush green trail for runners and bikers, known as the Hudson Exercise Trail. It was built in 2010 on vacant land that was deeded to the Village of Lynbrook in 1989 by Nassau County, which had obtained it from New York City as part of the city's effort to dispose of many unused parcels that it owned in the county. Before the 2010 improvements, the dirt paths of the heavily wooded area were used for decades for walking and bicycling. The upgrades, spearheaded by Brian Curran — a former Lynbrook mayor and Assemblyman — included new landscaping, attractive lighting, seven exercise stations, benches, and an asphalt path that follows the original halfmile dirt path loop, while still maintaining the natural flora of the area.
Take in some of the sights and sounds of Greis Park
Lynbrook mayor Alan Beach has continued the beautification of Greis Park, bringing the addition of turf sports fields to the area. The hockey rink at Greis Park is expected to be redeveloped as recreation programs continue to expand. Not only does the park hold athletic fields, trails, picnic areas and playgrounds, but it is one of the few places in the area where locals can come and cool off after a long day in the hot summer sun. Greis Park is visited annually by over 20,000 patrons and is the home of the Aquatic Center which includes a pool, spray park, and kiddie pool for the youngsters still learning how to swim.

Lynbrook Bagels offer a colorful array of options to pick from. Long Island is, after all, known for its bagels.
These businesses are the lifeblood of Lynbrook. Local shoppers don't have to go far. Atlantic Avenue is also home to Needle and Groove, a vinyl record store, an ideal spot for any audiophile. And at the end of the block, at the intersection of Merrick Road and Hempstead Avenue, movie buffs can enjoy watching the latest and greatest Hollywood has to offer at the Lynbrook Regal Theater. This state-ofthe-art movie theater first opened back in June 2018. A $21 million face-lift replaced the old, antiquated facility. The new theater includes 13 auditoriums, which attracts crowds from near and far, who come to enjoy the theater's lounge-type seating and select screenings. After taking in a movie, go back out and enjoy all of the restaurants and local businesses on Atlantic Avenue, that the community has come to know and love. The East Rockaway Grist Mill in Memorial Park is a 325-year-old mill that was used to grind cereal grain into flour and wheat middlings.Joseph Haviland was the Gristmill’s first owner before Alexander Davidson purchased it in 1818. The museum displays include an old fire engine pump from the 1800s named "Tootsie," along with period costumes, Indian and bay exhibits, and store settings from the 19th to early 20th centuries.Themuseum underwent extensive exterior repairs on wooden siding panels in 2018 as well as doorjambs, windowsills, shutters, and gutters. These repairs were funded by grants. The Old Grist Mill museum is open to the public from 1 to 5 p.m., every weekend during the summer, and is wheelchair accessible.Whilethe museum has come a long way thanks to the upgrades made, it still needs funding to help maintain as well as provide support to the mill's annual Huckleberry Frolic.Grist Mill Museum chair Regina Cunningham and the museum committee are working to obtain additional grants to help with maintenance and upkeep. “The poor thing is a 1680 building," Cunningham said. "It needs painting and a whole lot of work."Ifyou get the chance, the annual Huckleberry Frolic, is a great way to kick off the summer months. It is held every June and includes entertainment, food, and more.

The annual festivities included more than 30 different vendors, food trucks, a live DJ, a 22-foot slide, and inflatable attractions for kids, as well as a karate demonstration, games, and a petting zoo filled with ducks, sheep, rabbits, and other animals.

T he youth of Lynbrook and East Rockway feel right at home on Union Avenue (Lynbrook) and Ocean Avenue (East Rockaway). Both streets proudly display their school spirit throughout the year. But certain moments stand out. Every March, East Rockaway and Lynbrook students and neighbors look forward to their battle of the classes: Lynbrook High School’s “Class Night” and East Rockaway High School’s “Rock Rivalry.” Both events inspire camaraderie, and have become beloved traditions in each school’s community. Class Night, which originated at Lynbrook High School in 1924, pits each class against one another in art, scenery, skit and dance competitions. The points accumulated during this event — added to the points from each class’s homecoming banner and performances in sports night competitions — determine which grade wins the coveted silver cup. The events are entirely student-run, which plays a big part in their enthusiasm for the tradition. In 1936, 12 years after the birth of Class Night, East Rockaway High School began a tradition of its own: Rock Rivalry. This event encourages students to join together as a class to battle others in a variety of athletic, academic and artistic competitions.
