ALPHA SCHOLARS AND PROJECT ALPHA
Following the MLK parade and celebration on January 18th, the Rho Nu Lambda chapter, in collaboration with the Xi Tau Lambda chapter, successfully completed Project Alpha – a national initiative of our fraternity that empowers young minds. For the first time in our chapter's history, female participants were included as part of the discussion with our Alpha Scholars and guests to enhance the quality of our dialogue.
This program is designed to educate, motivate and equip young males aged 12-15 with knowledge and skills on issues of responsibility, relationships, teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. The chapter extended our outreach to teenage young ladies this year. The conversation focused on three goals:
1. Sharing Knowledge
2. Changing Attittudes
3. Providing Skills
Program Overview
Following an overview of the program by Bro. Myron Brown and a representative of the March of Dimes, the program was broken into an ice breaker on myths surrounding sexual activity. The group then participated in two major modules. Each module was led by a professional in the respective focus area. There was a capstone exercise for each module that provided a question-and-answer period that was open to all guests, panelists and brothers.
Module 1: Interpersonal Relationships
• Ms. Daralyn Plains
• Bro. Anthony Calime
Module 2: Birth Control and STIs
• Dr. LaSteshia Ekeocha
The Dallas-Fort Worth division of the March of Dimes participated in the Project Alpha event. Their organization provided opening remarks, giveaways for participation and sponsored the food and beverages.
We thank the local team and appreciate their support of our national program and partnership.

ALPHA SCHOLARS - FINANCIAL LITERACY SEMINAR
On January 18th, our Director of Education and Brothers gave our Alpha Scholars valuable insights into adult financial management. We gave each scholar a specific amount of money, allowing them to make decisions on allocation. They had various options including: rent, utilities, personal care, hobbies and entertainment. While eating pizza, some scholars jokingly expressed a desire to remain teenagers forever.
ONWARD AND UPWARD EMPOWERMENT FOUNDATION
The Onward and Upward Empowerment Foundation serves youth by providing mentoring and scholarship opportunities. The foundation also serves our broader Dallas-area community by providing resources to families facing financial hardship.
The next mentoring seminar will focus on Professional Dress and Dinner Etiquette on March 8.
