Springwell School The Springwell Historian
Impact
At Springwell School our history curriculum aims to inspire our pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past. History helps pupils to understand the process of change, the diversity of societies as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time. Our history curriculum will equip the children to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgment. Three main areas regarding history that will facilitate this desired outcome are:
Research
Understanding Bias
Chronology
Each lesson should look to incorporate at least one of these three themes.
Students at Springwell School will engage history lessons which are both linked to the wider curriculum and are also rigorous in developing enquiry skills and securing and retaining knowledge. Our creative curriculum approach means that some English lessons are linked to the historical time period being explored and high quality texts are chosen to develop both English skills and widen the knowledge of the time period, contextually. e.g. Year 6 study 'Letters from the Lighthouse by Emma Carroll alongside their learning about Wartime Britain. By engaging with characters from those stories, the students are able to empathize and consider social and cultural experience of those from the past. Furthermore, the link to English encourages quality writing outcomes. Moreover, we deepen our historical knowledge by further linking our other foundation lessons e.g. Year 4 construct Mayan temples in design and technology.
Students will enjoy practical lessons which include chariot racing, food tasting and responding to air raid sirens. This enables our children to have an immersive experience which encourages them to engage with their learning on a multi-sensory level.

Curriculum Coverage
Story engagement: stories enhance the learning of each historical unit. Stories are a way of transmitting knowledge in a memorable way and to give meaning to the topic. Stories are used to expand knowledge and understanding and prepare children for the historical period they are studying.
A wealth of knowledge: Children are introduced to a rich history curriculum, providing them with opportunities to reason with historical concepts throughout a unit.
- Each year group sequences and explores units which leads to core understanding.
--topic specific historical vocabulary is used to help children engage and develop their understanding of the period. -pupil books display high quality outcomes of their understanding of the topic.
- Children’s cultural capital will be enhanced through rigorous engagement with influential sources of historical content and thinkers. This allows children to navigate between historical documents and fictional texts. Contextualised- our history curriculum is contextualised through many visits to places of historical significance so that pupils can make tangible links and connections between past and present.
History days- are important part of each topic, children dress sup in historical costumes, participate in drama activities linked to periods and designs and construct an artefact or prepare food from the period to enthuse their theoretical and historical knowledge in a practical context they can understand.

Assessment
Children at Springwell are assessed throughout each lesson by monitoring questioning, formative feedback and responses. At the end of each unit of work, pupils participate in an assessment for learning outcome, which can be through:
• An in-class task
• Celebration of skills acquired/written response
• 3D model / practical investigation
• Using and applying knowledge in real-life contexts
• End-of-unit assessment
• Recount of school trips/workshops
• Home-learning to assess prior knowledge / extend concepts covered
