Intent

At Springwell School we believe that the learning of a foreign language provides an opportunity to foster children’s curiosity and develop their understanding of the world. Our intent is to equip pupils with basic skills to communicate for different purposes which allow them to express their thoughts and ideas. We aim to teach pupils to express ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. We recognise that competence in another language enables children to interpret, create and exchange meaning within and across cultures.

Implementation

At Springwell School our children have the opportunties to explore and develop their understanding of the Spanish language. Children begin their Spanish journey at the start of Key Stage 2. The scheme ‘Language Angels’ was introduced during the acacdemic year 2021/2022 and will be reviewed yearly.

Each unit has been chosen with our cohort of children in mind, whilst ensuring progression year on year to ensure we have confident and coherant Spanish speakers.

The children develop their phonetical knowledge as well as their conversational Spanish ensuring they have the opportunity to listen to, speak and write in the language.

Curriculum Coverage

Children learn the language of Spanish during Key Stage 2. Below is the progression of skills which the children will follow.

A Springwell Linguist (Impact)

We try to make links by speaking it wherever we can throughout the school; this includes when we are answering the register, thanking people for holding doors open and following simple commands in the classroom throughout their topics they will learn to maintain a simple conversation about daily experiences. Teaching will support their abilities to decode any new language and contexts by using acquired knowledge. They will develop their abilities to express their ideas from simple into more complex sentences and spoken language. Children will learn to understand and identify key words in familiar and unfamiliar situations and transfer these skills in real life circumstances.

Assessment

Children are assessed on their progression in the Spanish language in the following ways:

• End of topic interactive quizzes.
