Springwell School

The Springwell Explorer

Intent At Springwell School, we aspire to help develop all children's curiosity in both their immediate surroundings and in places and environments in the wider world, to become informed global citizens. We believe children need to understand the differences between places and their cultures and be able to recognise how these change over time. At Springwell School, children investigate a variety of human and physical characteristics of different places, through purposeful research and careful questioning. We provide our children with many opportunities to use a range of geographical skills to help them understand, present, analyse and communicate a range of information. As geographers, these ambitious and transferrable skills are put into practice both inside and outside the classroom through local fieldwork and trips. Springwell School’s multicultural community is an asset - one which we both celebrate and learn from.

Implementation A geographer at Springwell connects their knowledge from the classroom to the wider world. This is achieved by focusing on four core skills; locational knowledge, learning about human and physical features of places and participating in fieldwork, including recognising features in their local area. Through questioning, exploration, inquisitive enquiry and thorough research, Springwell offers a range of discretely taught lessons focusing on the skill at hand, with cross curricular links (where relevant) and real life experiences to challenge and support. Experiences like trips and outdoor geography in orienteering enrich the learning of our geographers.

Impact A geographer at Springwell aspires to look after our planet, fostering a responsibility to the natural world. As our geographer embarks on this journey, starting to identify as a global citizen is central. Our curriculum structure helps pupils to deepen their understanding of physical and human geographical processes, nurturing curiosity and fascination for the world we live in.

Assessment Children at Springwell are assessed throughout each lesson by monitoring questioning, formative feedback and responses. At the end of each unit of work, pupils participate in an assessment for learning outcome, which can be through: • An in-class task • Celebration of fieldwork/written response • 3D model / practical investigation • Using and applying knowledge in real-life contexts • End-of-unit assessment • Home-learning to assess prior knowledge / extend concepts covered
