The Springwell Digital Learner

Intent

“If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow.”

At Springwell School we have a clear and simple vision: the children should be online-safe, online-inspired and online-confident. By the time they leave Springwell School, we want all of our children to be fully aware of the significant risks (and benefits) of the internet and to know how to safeguard themselves in this area. We want every child to have a thorough understanding of computing science and to be ‘digitally literate’ to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through digital technology. Our children will be able to use these skills to enhance their learning in other curriculum areas. As well as covering the basic IT skills, e.g. making a simple Word document or using Paint programs, we also equip our children with the confidence to blog, make web pages, create computer games and animation. As they go through the school they explore augmented reality and social networking, coding and generate content for younger children as well. We believe it gives them all the experiences they need to prepare them for 21st century lifestyles.

Implementation

At Springwell School we have a clear and simple vision: the children should be online-safe, online-inspired and online-confident. This is achieved through a broad and enriching curriculum, in which the children are given opportunities throughout the curriculum to use computing skills to complete a variety of tasks.

Throughout the school the children focus on four main areas of computing; Computing Systems and Networks, Programming, Data and Information and Creating Media. These skills are taught and consolidated in specific computing lessons and then applied in other areas of the curriculum, allowing the children to apply their knowledge in a range of situations, enabling them to be online-safe, online-inspired and online-confident.

Children with a real interest in computing are given the opportunity of attending extra-curricular sessions including; photography club, purple mash club and computing club.

Curriculum Coverage

The curriculum follows a progression of skills throughout the children’s time at Springwell.

E Safety

We recognise that we are living in an increasingly digital world and as such we committed to ensuring the safety of the children and staff when working online.

A Springwell Digital and Friendly Learner (Impact)

At the beginning of their digital journey the online world is a place of endless opportunities where ‘you can do anything.’ Before they even learnt to read, most can navigate through devices to play games and watch cartoons. Although they may be full of curiosity their understanding of what being digital means and how, why and who puts content there is limited. They are not yet equipped to evaluate whether something is good or bad. So guidance from parents, carers and teachers is key. At Springwell School we aim bridge this gap and give children the understanding and knowledge of where and how information is uploaded onto the internet. By the end of Year 6, children will be able to safely navigate relevant technology.

Children are proficient in the use of a variety of hardware and software to complete a range of tasks. Through their time at Springwell School they become more independent and efficient in selecting the relevant tools in order to complete a task. They are digitally competent, possessing a set of skills, knowledge and attitudes that enable the confident, creative and critical use of technologies and systems.

Assessment

Children are assessed on their progression in computing in the following ways:

• Talk tasks

• Group presentations

• Project outcomes

• Questioning by adults and group discussions

• Quizzes

• Self and peer evaluations – children test and judge how successful the outcome is against the purpose and intent

Teachers will judge pupils work and knowledge against an assessment Rubric, identifying next steps and recording this information on target tracker.
