Springwell School The Springwell Artist
Intent
Art is a form of communication. Here at Springwell School, the children can be expressive, creative, explore and develop their own unique style. To gain an understanding of art and design, we aim for the children to record their experiences through different design techniques. They are taught to think critically, evaluate and analyse their creative works using artistic language. Throughout the children’s time at Springwell School, we aim for the children to become proficient at drawing, painting and sculpting. The vision is for the children to become proficient at general art, craft and design techniques; to know and discuss great artists, craft makers and designers and to understand historical and cultural context of various art movements.
Implementation
In Art and Design, the vison at Springwell is realised through school trips (gallery and garden visits) and collaborative themed events such as Cultural week, displays to celebrate important events throughout the year (Jubilee, World Book Day, Empathy, Black History, Anti Bullying), seasonal hoops (Autumn, Christmas, Spring flowers), and displays to showcase and celebrate the children's creativity and exceptional work based on the curriculum. Local artists visit the school to share their expertise to inspire the children to express their imagination.
Innovative projects are also undertaken such as a fashion assignment to promote ethical clothing and sustainability, cookery to promote healthy and mindful eating, a Crufts show in which children were tasked with designing and creating dogs from clay and a craft enterprise in which children create and sell handmade products.

Art Through Technology
Responding to Art
A Springwell Artist (Impact)
A Springwell artist is someone who shows passion and confidence to innovate, and endeavours to express themselves using:
⦁ A spectrum of materials and media creatively to design and generate products that celebrate their individuality and personal perspectives with a focus on process and technique.
⦁ A wide variety of art and design skills and techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space, and showing clear progression throughout their primary school journey.
⦁ Drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their observations, interpretations and experiences and how they see the world.
⦁ The broad and balanced curriculum to make cross curricular links and deepen their knowledge of the world around them; past, present and future.
⦁ The work of a range of diverse artists and designers, comparing and evaluating the differences and similarities between a multitude of contrasting disciplines, and making links to their own practice.
Assessment
The children’s learning is assessed using sketches to review and revisit ideas, analysing creative works, exploring ideas and recording observations using the language of art and design. The children work collaboratively by peer and self-assessing their observations, skills and techniques used during the artistic process for further development. The children are also questioned on their skills and understanding, the influences they have taken from artist studies, and their use of multimedia and mastery and control of techniques throughout the process. We also observe the links that they make to their culture, life experiences and across the curriculum. The principal aim for our art curriculum is to foster a love of art and a freedom and outlet of expression and diversity.
