Three cheers for Her Majesty the Queen! Welcome to the Platinum Jubilee edition, in which we pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth II and highlight some of the events due to take place in local communities over the long holiday weekend at the start of June. In February the Queen marked the 70th anniversary of her ascension to the throne – a truly remarkable achievement. We all need something to look forward to: since I last wrote this column there’s been so much bad news. The terrible war in Ukraine needs no introduction. It’s been humbling to witness the resilience of the people, as well as the humanitarian work being undertaken by certain individuals locally. The situation has exacerbated further the rising cost of energy – see our Spotlight article for ways to mitigate the increase in bills. On a happier note, one place with lots of good news is Twyford’s Rural Pie Co! Read on to see why congratulations are in order. Also within these pages are updates from a number of local community organisations as well as the charity Understanding Dementia, who are making a difference through their training courses for carers. Enjoy the jubilee: catch up with you later in the summer!

Understanding Dementia News from local dementia charity In 2020, the Covid pandemic forced everyone to make adjustments, including suspending many activities. Wishing to provide the support that unpaid carers needed so badly, Twyford-based charity Understanding Dementia launched a free online training programme in autumn 2020. Last year, it began delivering paid-for courses to dementia professionals. With fundraising still a challenge, the charity held two online quizzes which enabled them to continue to provide training free of charge to family carers this year. Understanding Dementia was delighted to be nominated Charity of the Year 2021 by Sonning Golf Club Lady Captain, Elspeth Cooper – pictured on the left, next to charity founder Shirley Pearce, at the cheque presentation in early March.

Courses for professionals and family carers Understanding Dementia has now completed 11 training courses for family carers and five for health and care professionals. The charity has received very positive feedback from both. They have now joined with Age UK Berkshire and the Link Visiting Scheme in a consortium of local charities providing dementia services commissioned by Wokingham Borough Council. The funding received will equip them to extend their free training for family carers across the borough, both face-to-face and online. They are also launching a Train the Trainer programme to build their own team of trainers and increase their reach. Family carers from outside the borough can still contact Understanding Dementia directly to join their online courses free of charge. Anyone considering joining a future course is invited to contact the charity to register their interest, and to follow their Facebook page for the latest information.

If your organisation would like to make them your charity of the year, please get in touch using the contact details below.

The Understanding Dementia website has been revamped – do take a look! It now includes a number of testimonials from family and professional carer trainees. There's also a raft of helpful information, such as how memory works and the effects of dementia on wellbeing. www.understandingdementia.co.uk 07743 501149 lucy.w@understandingdementia.co.uk

Energy crisis How to minimise rising costs in 2022 by Helen Say, www.cblservices.co.uk

either manually or using sockets that can be controlled via your phone. Or use cheap timer plugs to schedule turning appliances on and off.

It cannot have escaped your attention that our energy bills are set to rise by over 50% this year. A worldwide squeeze on energy supplies has pushed the price of gas up to unprecedented levels. The UK is particularly hard hit because about 85% of our homes have gas central heating, and gas generates a third of the country’s electricity. In the past, we could shop around for lower energy bills, but that option is no longer available due to the collapse of many of the smaller providers. This means we’re having to look for more creative ways to save on our fuel bills. Even the smallest of changes – when done consistently – could help offset rising prices and keep bills at more manageable levels. Here are our top six tips for saving energy at home, courtesy of the Energy Saving Trust. Adopt them all and you could save around £200 to £300 per year on your fuel bills! 1. Turn off standby appliances at the plug: Estimated average saving of £30 a year. Switch off unused appliances at the wall,

2. Install a smart thermostat: Estimated average saving £75 a year. Smart thermostats can make your heating more efficient by only warming rooms you are using. They work by learning how long it takes to heat your home, so they can get it to the right temperature at the right time. They can also be controlled by your phone, so you can come back to a warm house. 3. Turn down your thermostat: Estimated average saving £80 per year by turning your heating down by just one degree. 4. Buy energy efficient appliances: Estimated average saving between £7 and £65 a year. If you need to renew an appliance, choose one with a high energyefficiency rating. An A+++ washing machine will typically cost £65 less to run than an A+ one over an 11-year product lifespan, and you could save around £7 a year with a modern, efficient dishwasher. 5. Wash clothes at a lower temperature: Estimated average saving £5 a year by washing at 30 degrees rather than 40. (Most detergent brands produce a perfectly good wash at 30 degrees.) 6. Invest in some draft proofing: Estimated average saving £35 a year. Use draught excluders or draught-proofing kits to seal cracks in skirting boards and floors. If you don’t have double glazing, consider buying special plastic lining for your windows.

The Rural Pie Co. Further accolades for Mr & Mrs Smith The Rural Pie Co. in Twyford must be familiar to most RG10 residents by now. Having spent four years establishing a good local fan base for their food through offering event catering and delivery services, founders Philip and Amy opened their café/restaurant off Wellington Square in the centre of the village in September 2020. They chose to focus the offering on their pies, as these had been in constant demand since the start – perfect rounds of crisp pastry encasing a generous and succulent filling, whether meat based or vegetarian. As Amy explains: ‘We love the diversity of what a pie can be. Nothing is off limits, which we love, as we can think outside the box while still providing true comfort food.’

British Pie Awards 2022 Even before opening, they’d entered the British Pie Awards and come away with their first prize. This year they won no fewer than four awards across various categories, making it their third year in a row to gain recognition from their industry peers. Well done, guys! In case you are wondering if your favourite pie was among the winners: the Venison won Bronze, the Chicken, Pancetta, Brie and Cranberry won Bronze and Silver, and the Steak and Onion won Bronze.

Awards are given out based on an overall score covering an array of criteria. Team Rural Pie were complimented on their pastry thickness and taste, their flavour combinations and the quantity and quality of ingredients used. In fact, the Chicken, Pancetta, Brie and Cranberry pie was only one point off winning a gold award! Belated congratulations Regarding the Mr & Mrs Smith in the title, yup - Philip and Amy tied the knot last September, finally getting away for a short honeymoon last month. As Amy explains: ‘Rural Pie started with Philip’s love of food and grew from there. I helped out from a very early stage, and as the business blossomed, so did we – cheesy I know, but it’s true!’ Now available in Charvil

Amy and Philip at the British Pie Awards

Good news: you can now enjoy food from the Rural Pie Co. at the Heron on the Ford at Lands End in Charvil. On their menu the pub currently offers the Brisket, Stout and Shallot pie alongside the Mushroom, Shallot, Brie and Garlic pie, and occasional specials are added.

Evening dining

Sharing the love

On Fridays and Saturdays the Rural Pie Co. offers the perfect solution for a convivial meal with friends, hassle-free family dining or date night with your beloved. Open until 10pm, the restaurant is fully licensed with a range of local craft beers plus wines and spirits, full pie meals (of course!) with a choice of starters, side dishes and desserts. Book now to experience the evening vibe at Rural Pie!

The couple are incredibly grateful for the support received from the local community, which enabled them to get their business through the pandemic. Amy says: We were welcomed with open arms, then as we had to change our business model to respond quickly to the restrictions, the customers adapted with us, continuing to pop by for takeaways or to place orders while dining in was off limits.’

Private hire

It works both ways: the pair have always demonstrated a desire to give back. They ran a soup kitchen offering free lunches for children and those in need through the second coronavirus lockdown. They support grassroots football by sponsoring the Woodley Football Club ladies’ and men’s player of the month awards, the Miami Belles U15 team and Football in Berkshire, aiding with their awards presentation this year. They have also run multiple fundraisers for Happy Hours Pre-School and Cancer Research.

There is also the option to claim exclusive use of the premises for a private event – perhaps a birthday party, a reunion or a business get-together. Plan ahead and enquire for more details.

Most recently they have been helping to raise funds for the Red Cross Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal by facilitating the sale of crochet creator Sonia’s cute blue, yellow and white animals through the shop.

A life of service by Catherine Rose June’s Platinum Jubilee will celebrate 70 years since Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne: an extraordinary milestone, surpassing the 63-year reign of her great-greatgrandmother, Queen Victoria. Born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary on 21 April 1926 in Bruton Street, London, the girl nicknamed Lilibet wasn’t destined to be Queen. She was the older daughter of Prince Albert and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, the Duke and Duchess of York. It was the Duke‘s older brother, Edward, who was heir to the throne. The Yorks were anticipating a quiet life for their family, without the heavy responsibilities of rule. However, an event that shocked the nation was to propel Elizabeth into the spotlight and take her on a different path. Less than a year after becoming King in 1936, Edward VIII’s love for Wallace Simpson led him to abdicate. Back then it was strictly taboo for any member of the royal family to marry a divorcé(e) – let alone for the sovereign to marry a twice-divorced American. As next in line to the throne, Prince Albert took his place, becoming King George VI in December 1936. Princess Elizabeth, aged ten, became heir, her life focused from that point on the fact she would one day be Queen. In 1947, Elizabeth married Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten in Westminster Abbey. They settled in Clarence House and Prince Charles was born two years later. Although still only 55 years old, King George’s health began to fail in the summer of 1951. The young princess undertook her first official duty by stepping in to represent him at the Trooping of the Colour.

Photo: Jacob King, PA Images

In January 1952, Elizabeth and Philip embarked on a trip to Australia and New Zealand, hoping to repeat the success of their first tour the previous autumn to Canada and Washington DC. However, en route in Kenya, Elizabeth received the news that the King had died of a coronary thrombosis on 6 February at Sandringham. She flew back immediately, now Queen Elizabeth II at just 25 years old. After three months of private mourning, she moved into Buckingham Palace and took on the routine duties expected of a monarch. She conducted her first state opening of Parliament in November and her coronation was held at Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953. Controversially, Prince Philip was instrumental in having the ceremony televised. Together, the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh worked to modernise the monarchy while retaining its traditional sense of public duty and creed of ‘never complain, never explain.’ Like anyone, Queen Elizabeth has lived through difficult times. Last year she lost her husband and life companion. However, despite bouts of ill health herself, she has steadfastly continued her official duties. Now aged 96 and still head of the Commonwealth, she has lived a life of serviceand is admired, respected and loved around the globe.

There is also a website highlighting the ever-growing list of public community events taking place across the nation: visit www.platinumjubilee.gov.uk/events. Not to be outdone, local communities in RG10 have been busy making festive bunting to garland their roads, planning street parties and jubilee picnics, and arranging fun events for all ages to enjoy. Hurst Parish Council is behind a series of events in the village, supported by Stanlake Park Wine Estate. One of the highlights will be Saturday’s Family Festival on the green, with live music, bar and BBQ. St Mary’s Church in Wargrave is organising a Big Jubilee Lunch on Sunday on Mill Green, before the village turns its attention to the biennial Wargrave Festival starting the following week. The Queen’s Green Canopy Since The Queen’s Green Canopy initiative was launched last year, many people have responded to the call to ‘plant a tree for the jubilee’. Individuals, community groups, schools, businesses and councils have all taken part in a bid to green up the UK. The idea of planting more trees, of course, is to help fight the climate crisis. Trees are not only beautiful but also beneficial for absorbing pollution, storing carbon, producing oxygen, stabilising the soil, helping to prevent flooding, and improving biodiversity by providing a source of food and shelter for many species of birds, mammals and insects. Their eco-credentials vary, but oak, beech, London plane, black walnut, many larger maples and eucalyptus are among the best for carbon storage. Larger trees generally make a greater contribution than smaller ones, and broadleaved species perform better on photosynthesis – effectively cleaning the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. For wildlife, oaks are kings of the habitat providers, but smaller trees, including a wide range of birch, are excellent too. Some of the smaller trees and shrubs that are normally found at the edge of woodland excel at this particular role, including elder, spindle, blackthorn, wild cherry, crab apple, hawthorn and holly. So the key is to have a diverse mix of trees available in our parks and gardens. As well as inviting the planting of new trees, The Queen’s Green Canopy is dedicating a network of 70 Ancient Woodlands across the United Kingdom and identifying 70 Ancient Trees to celebrate Her Majesty’s 70 years of service. www.queensgreencanopy.org

Local news Help for Ukraine Most of us have felt powerless to act in response to the crisis in Ukraine. Not Debbie Martin from Twyford, who felt compelled to do something to help innocent civilians suffering under the Russian invasion. As an executive assistant for a multinational corporation, Debbie is no stranger to planning, deadlines and hard work, and she quickly put all her skills to good use. First she asked a Ukrainian friend how she could help. He told her about a depot in Hounslow where the Ukrainian community in London was receiving, sorting and sending items donated for the humanitarian effort. Having identified what was needed most urgently, she set about galvanising support through local Facebook groups and collecting donations at her home. The initial focus was on helping people keep warm, healthy and connected to the outside world. As needs changed over time, the list started including items such as medical supplies, rucksacks, hiking boots, tinned and dry food. The response from the local community has been overwhelmingly generous. With the help of Mike Pearson, Debbie spent an exhausting few weeks making deliveries to the depot. Then, following a suggestion from a local supporter, she started collecting ‘shoeboxes of smiles’ for Ukrainian children. The idea was to send brightly decorated boxes containing thoughtful gifts to bring a little happiness in the hardest of times to children who had had to flee their homes. Individuals, families, schools, youth clubs and sports teams all rose to the occasion, providing boxes carefully packed with a selection of small toys, pencils, booklets,

hats, gloves, and other items. Many included drawings and messages from local children. In late March Debbie helped deliver a vanload of 529 shoeboxes of smiles to a toy company warehouse in Folkestone, generously given over its owner to the relief effort by Canterbury Help for Ukraine and Kent Help for Ukraine. The boxes were soon loaded on to one of the lorries headed for Lviv for onward distribution. Debbie is continuing to post updates on local Facebook groups, at the time of writing collecting for another consignment of shoeboxes to go out in April. Well done to this local hero for so quickly becoming a focal point and facilitating the generosity of spirit shown by RG10 residents. Let’s Sing! Divorce Recovery Workshop A Wokingham based charity that helps people after relationship breakdown is launching its first course in two years due to the pandemic. Volunteers are looking forward to celebrating its 30th birthday by helping more people face to face. The very first UK course, held at Berkshire College of Agriculture, was life changing for John Kemp, now 68. He says: ‘I felt my world had come to an end when my 16-year marriage collapsed. The workshop helped me put things into perspective. I needed to work things through, see my future and not look back.’ John went on to help set up DRW across the UK and adds: ‘It’s great to see DRW still flourishing.’

There’s plenty of free parking at Brookside and you will be warmly greeted with a cup of tea or coffee before every session. All DRW’s volunteer leaders have been through the courses themselves. A modest charge covers costs including Saturday lunches. Topics covered include: • • • • • •

Is this really happening to me? Coping with your ex-partner Assuming new responsibilities Letting go and forgiveness Family matters Thinking about new relationships.

Anne shares her experience of the course: ‘After my divorce, I struggled to come to terms with bewilderment, loss, anger, bitterness, and betrayal. It’s a horrible, tough, awful time. DRW showed me a way through. I never imagined I could live life to the full again.’ For more information, call Seamus on 07887 800521, email reading@drw.org.uk or follow @readingdrw on Twitter or Facebook. You’ll find helpful advice at www.drw.org.uk. Wargrave Literary Festival It’s back and it’s bigger than ever before! Wargrave Village Festival is delighted to announce a stunning lineup and a great new venue for its summer literary evening.

The next local course will run on Friday evenings 10–11 June and Saturdays 17–18 June at Brookside Hall, Earley.

Taking place on Thursday 16 June 16 at the Marquee on Mill Green, ticket holders will be treated to talks by renowned authors Amanda Jennings, Will Carver and Nick Butterworth, who each have a connection to the local area.

DRW’s courses are for anyone whose relationship has broken down, whenever it ended, and whether they’re divorced or separated.

There will also be a chance to talk to a literary agent, a representative of Red Door Publishing and to learn from successful self-published author John Nixon.

TRHA update In late March, the Twyford and Ruscombe Horticultural Association held their Spring Show for the first time in two years. Although smaller than in the past, the event went well. The beautiful weather meant that teas could be taken on the terrace and an enjoyable afternoon was had by all. A proportion of the entries were judged by the visitors. This idea proved a success and will be continued at the Summer and Autumn Shows. The Summer Show will be held at Loddon Hall, Twyford, on Saturday 11 June. Details are in the TRHA Show Schedule and on the website, so get your entries ready! Prior to that there will be a willow stripping experience at the TRHA Store in Loddon Hall Road on Sunday 1 May. All members and their families will be welcome. On Sunday 29 May a Bring and Buy Plant Sale will be held at the Store – a chance to

share your cuttings and seedlings and, perhaps, find something new for your garden. The Store is well stocked for all your horticultural needs, with advice also available from knowledgeable volunteers. Annual household membership of TRHA is £8 a year or £7 for those over 65. Apply at the store, or email Jenny Wager at trhamembership@gmail.com. A newsletter with topical tips and updates on the activities of the association is published monthly and can also be found on the TRHA website: www.trha.org.uk. Yeldall Manor open day The Yeldall Manor open day is back! This is a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre for men, set in beautiful grounds in Wargrave. The (usually) annual open day is the Christian charity's way of saying 'thank you' to friends, supporters and neighbours. They are very much looking forward to being able to welcome supporters on site for the first time since March 2020. The event kicks off with lunch in the grounds, where there will also be a range of stalls and games. After open-air worship on the lawn, there will be time to enjoy a strawberry tea. The service will be live-streamed, as in 2021, to enable others to join in wherever they are. All are invited to Yeldall for fellowship, fun and food as the centre celebrates 45 years helping to rebuild lives. www.yeldall.org.uk Please mention rg10 when responding to advertisements

Twyford Twinning Association Les dernières nouvelles (news update) Did you know that Twyford has recently celebrated four years of its twinning with Cuincy (pronounced Kwansee) in northern France? So far there have been a few reciprocal visits, a football tournament, school exchanges, and a joint concert between their Mélodie choir and our High Voltage Singers – plus we are exchanging sketchbooks of local scenes by our artists. Sadly, just as we were getting going with regular visits, we had to cancel a number of events due to the pandemic, and there have been no visits in either direction for two years. However, thanks to Zoom, members of the Twyford Twinning Association have been able to keep in touch with our friends from Cuincy to mark special occasions such as Christmas and Bastille Day. Here in Twyford we have also held a few events, such as coffee mornings, to raise awareness of the twinning relationship and involve more members and groups from the local community.

the village. I had great fun attending this in 2019. A football tournament was established the same year, with our own Twyford Comets winning the first Twinning Cup! I’m looking forward to supporting the Comets U12 and U13 teams in June, when we travel to Cuincy in the hope of retaining the trophy. One of the activities we have been promoting during lockdown is to get together some English books to donate to the new library in Cuincy. Happy Hours Pre-School and Dolphin School kindly responded to my request, as did Audrey Curtis of the Twyford & Ruscombe Local History Society, who donated two of her books: Twyford and Ruscombe Through the Ages and Wartime Memories. Cuincy had already given us some books in French, which are available in Twyford Library, so it will be good to be able to reciprocate on my next visit. In the meantime, I have been contacted by an English teacher in Cuincy interested in setting up regular video calls with Twyford residents to enable his students to practise their English. I have a few people keen to join these sessions, but if anyone else is interested, do contact me. There are lots of other ways our links with Cuincy could be used: for example, we hope to arrange a cycle tour to Cuincy (only 50 miles from Calais) and to promote more school visits, such as those by Dolphin School. There are also opportunities for exchanges between table tennis, archery and other interest groups.

Coffee morning in March at La Fontana

The principal idea behind twinning is to develop social, cultural and sporting links between two locations in different countries for the benefit of all. Cuincy holds a fête each year in June, with the most amazing carnival procession through

Contact me if you would like to try to set up an exchange of any sort, and we will explore the level of interest from Cuincy. (Line dancing, anyone? Cuincy apparently has a very active society!) The Modern Gardener – Frances Tophill – published by Kyle Books If spending time outdoors has got you itching to make some changes to your garden, this book is a good place to look for inspiration. Five-minute practices, three times a day. One for your heart. One for your body. And one for your mind. He also gives top tips for creating better habits and getting to the root of what’s holding you back. Twelve Secrets – Robert Gold Fed up of ‘churn them out’ crime series? News update Business mentoring project

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

Six groups of Piggott School GCSE business students were shortlisted for the finals, held in early April at Rural Pie Co. Their presentations to the panel of three judges were of a particularly high standard, including some fantastic, well thought out ideas.

Planning is at an advanced stage for a series of events to be held at Stanlake Meadow from Thursday 2 June, culminating in Twyford Beer Festival over a week later.

Well done to all, especially the prize winners: 1st – EnCake Neve Csemiczky and Georgia Boonham 2nd – Greenfoods Kiran Sangra and Josh Mundy 3rd – Temptations To Go Avneet Jhheent and Grainne Hefferon Many thanks to the judges and everyone else involved: without your time and feedback, the project simply wouldn’t work. Thanks also to Ashley Pearce for his continued support for this project, which undoubtedly benefits all his students. A special mention for Kevin Lancaster at Right at Home for his ongoing sponsorship of Twyford Together, as well as mentoring students for another year.

There'll be something for all ages to enjoy from children to pensioners! See events covered elsewhere in this magazine. More details will be posted on www.twyfordtogether.org and www.twyfordbeerfestival.co.uk. If anyone would like to help with any of these events, please feel free to get in touch. And finally There are more events planned over the summer and into the autumn, so keep your eyes peeled for further announcements. Rob Yeadon Twyford Together Chairman

Remembering Gordon Storey We are planning a fun event on Gordon's birthday weekend - do join us! On Sunday 26 June, Gordon’s Memorial Football Tournament will be held at King George V Field. There will be matches of 15 minutes each way for different age groups, with prizes for the winners. You‘ll be able to buy hot dogs and burgers or you could BYO picnic. Keep an eye on the Twyford Together website and Facebook page for more details nearer the time. Well done to eight-year-old Martha Tomnie who completed a sponsored reading challenge during the February half term. She managed to read 12 books, raising over £100. She chose to donate the money to Age Concern Twyford & District in honour of her Granny JoJo and Grandpa Gordon Storey, who both worked so hard for this local charity. Recipe Twice cooked cheese soufflés These lovely individual soufflés are relatively easy to make, and you can even cook them in advance, completing the second bake when required (see tip). Ingredients: 25g butter, plus extra for greasing 2 tbsp panko breadcrumbs 1 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese 25g plain flour ½ tsp mustard powder 200ml milk 75g mature Cheddar cheese, finely grated 2 medium egg yolks Salt and freshly ground black pepper 3 medium egg whites 1 tsp olive oil Fresh herbs and mixed salad, to serve

TIP

Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 190C/170 fan/gas mark 5. Use the extra butter to thoroughly grease four 200ml ramekin dishes. Line the base of each dish with a circle of baking paper. Mix together the breadcrumbs and Parmesan cheese and use to coat the inside of the dishes. 2. Melt the butter in a small pan, stir in the flour and mustard powder and cook for 1 minute. Remove from the heat and gradually stir in the milk. Cook, stirring, over a moderate heat for 2–3 minutes until the mixture forms a thick sauce. Stir in the Cheddar cheese. 3. Allow the mixture to cool for a few minutes then beat in the egg yolks and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Whisk the egg whites in clean grease-free bowl until stiff. Stir 1 tbsp of the whites into the mixture to loosen it slightly then gently fold in the rest of the whites. 4. Divide the mixture between the ramekins. Place in a roasting tin, half fill with boiling water and bake for 15–20 minutes until risen and golden. 5. Cool for 10 minutes then turn the soufflés out onto a greased baking sheet and remove the lining paper (see tip). Brush the tops with olive oil and return to the oven for 6–7 minutes until golden brown. Serve garnished with fresh herbs and with a mixed salad, if liked. After turning out the soufflés onto the baking sheet, they can be left to cool, then covered and chilled for up to 12 hours. When required, bake for 10–12 minutes until piping hot.
