summer

I’ve been preparing this edition during some fabulous early summer weather in June. Who doesn’t love a bit of warm sunshine and blue skies? Luckily there was time to put together several pages of photos showcasing some of the wonderful events that were held locally over the Platinum Jubilee, bringing people together to celebrate and create special memories. Thank you to the photo contributors and all those who made the events happen. This edition has a health and wellbeing theme, from advice on coping in hot weather (for both humans and animals) and looking after our feet, to exploring the joys of swimming. Enter our competition for a chance to enjoy a trial family membership of the superb health club facilities at Castle Royle! Many people do not go away during the summer – me included. Turn to our interiors feature for ideas to create that holiday feeling at home, and try out the caponata recipe for a true taste of the Mediterranean. As regulars will know, RG10 is a stalwart champion of everything local – whether businesses, events, charities or community organisations. This issue features S Green Plumbing & Heating, Twyford Comets FC, Daisy’s Dream and Marvellous Festival, plus seasonal updates from the neighbourhood policing team and Twyford Together. Wishing everyone a happy summer!

No place like home Create that holiday feeling by Katherine Sorrell

S

materials you may be able to tackle most things, but if necessary get a list together and book a tradesperson.

1. Clear your clutter

Give your garden furniture a spruce up, maybe adding some fresh outdoor cushions and solar fairy lights. And for a warm welcome every time you come home, sweep the front step, polish any metal knobs or handles on the door and pop some fresh plants in a couple of pots by the entrance.

taying at home this summer? Or been away and already missing that holiday feeling? Either way, there’s no reason to be wistfully imagining the crisp, fresh sheets of a fancy hotel or the decorative charm of the perfect getaway cottage. Here are ten top tips to create that holiday vibe at home.

One of the key differences between a holiday cottage and a full-time home is the amount of ‘stuff’ that inevitably takes over everyday life. A sense of clear space and organisation really helps create a relaxing environment so, without taking away too much character, have a thorough clear-out. Donate, throw away or tidy as much as possible into cupboards so it’s out of sight. What’s left can be turned into attractive displays in bookcases or on shelves.

4. Remember your outside space

A unified colour scheme helps a living room feel elegant and relaxed. Houghton corner sofa in Tweedy Blend Blue, £1,725; storage footstool, £450; cushions, from £12; all Next. www.next.co.uk

2. Clean from top to bottom It goes without saying that you expect any holiday home or hotel to be immaculately clean, but in real life it’s hard enough just to keep on top of the regular dusting, vacuuming and mopping. However, if you can devote some time to cleaning those extra bits that don’t get done too often – tops of door frames, backs of radiators, behind chests of drawers – your home will feel completely refreshed – and hopefully you will, too. 3. Pay attention to detail Sort out all those little niggles and minor repairs that you’ve been meaning to get on top of. You wouldn’t want to stay in a holiday let where things are broken or worn, so why should you do so at home? With basic DIY 12 rg10 July/August 2022. To advertise please call 0118 907 2510 or email nikki@rg10mag.com

5. Create a unified colour scheme. What can set a great holiday cottage apart from an average one is the interior design. A holiday home or hotel is often designed with a great deal of thought as to how everything will look together, rather than full of items collected over time, which is usually the case in one’s own home. However, with some tweaking it should be possible to pull together a coherent colour scheme, using coordinating cushions, throws, lampshades, vases and other accessories, and perhaps a quick repaint of some key areas. Blue and white is reminiscent of sea and sky, a refreshing look that works everywhere, while white, creams and other neutrals can provide a minimal background that’s very calming.

Create a calm, relaxing bathroom with good quality toiletries, towels and accessories. Loxwood stool, £49; Dorma Sumptuously Soft towels, from £10; Dorma Luxurious Memory Foam bath rug, £40; all Dunelm. www.dunelm.com

6. Make sure your mattress is up to scratch Nothing is more vital, whether on holiday or at home, than a good night’s sleep, and a quality mattress is the best start for this. An alternative (or perhaps an addition) is to add a really good topper, which provides an extra level of comfort without breaking the bank. 7. Sort out your bed linen One of the greatest pleasures of a good hotel or holiday cottage is top quality, matching, pristine, pressed bedding. If yours needs attention, now could be a good time to mend or replace it, looking for at least 200 thread-count cotton, perhaps with Oxford-edge pillowcases and a beautiful bed throw that coordinates with the colour scheme of the room.

shower curtain over the bath for a smart glass screen can make a big difference. Add a set of sumptuously fluffy towels, some luxury toiletries and a scattering of scented candles, and you’re set for a blissful bathing experience every day. 9. Organise your kitchen Mend or replace any worn or mismatched implements, reorganise your cupboards and drawers, and if storage is an issue add a rail, shelf or trolley to display selected items attractively. Overall, aim for a coordinated, pristine look that will make cooking a pleasure, with everything in its own neatly allotted space.

8. Revamp the bathroom

10. Add an amazing aroma

The bathroom is what often sets a top-notch hotel apart from the rest, and you can replicate the experience at home. If your bath and basin taps have seen better days, it’s not enormously expensive to replace them with a set of gleaming new ones. Swapping a

Nothing creates an upmarket effect quite as easily as a space that smells divine. Place scented candles, oil diffusers or a simple vase of fresh flowers in your hallway and main rooms, and enjoy walking into instant luxury. Please mention rg10 when responding to advertisements

Home Instead Staying cool during the summer months drink plenty of water or fruit juice to replace fluids lost through perspiration. Avoid caffeine or alcohol which increase dehydration. Keep some ice lollies in the fridge as a cool treat! 3. Think lightweight Choose clothing which is loose, lightweight, light coloured and breathable such as a white linen shirt. And think layers, as early mornings/evenings can get nippy! As we hit the summer months, many of us will be happy to throw open those windows and enjoy the summer sun. The sunshine makes us feel happy, and it offers a great source of vitamin D to keep us healthy. However, we also need to be careful in the heat, as it can have some negative effects on our bodies, especially for those of us of an older vintage! Higher temperatures and humidity can present risks to health, particularly in older bodies which are often unable to adjust to sudden changes in temperature. This can lead to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. With this in mind, here are a few tips on how to make the most of the summer weather but stay safe and cool in the process:

4. Cool down Take cool showers and baths when possible. If you’re out and about, use a cotton hankie soaked in cool water and place it on the back of your neck and on your wrists. 5. Sleeping When the weather is warm, sleeping can be uncomfortable. Run a thin cloth or muslin in cold water to lay on your skin as you sleep, and leave windows and curtains open if safe to make the most of any breeze. 6. Cover up In addition to wearing cooler clothing it’s also important to remember a hat. No matter whether it’s a cotton baseball cap or a straw boater, headwear will help to keep your face in the shade. Remember to apply sunscreen to any exposed skin when outside.

1. Avoid the hottest times of the day (between 11am – 3pm) If you need to venture out during the midday sun, make sure you aren’t outside for long periods of time and find shady spots when you can.

7. Pick the perfect spot Seek out the coolest areas of your home during warmer weather. Keep curtains and blinds closed to prevent sun heating up rooms, especially your bedroom.

2. Keep hydrated Even if you’re not thirsty, it’s important to

Following these simple steps will enable you to enjoy the best of the British summertime safely.

Swimming The joy of the water by Jules Lang As I wade gingerly through the reeds into the river at 6.30 in the morning from the safe haven of the little wooden pontoon, I hear my fellow swimmers exhale sharply in unison as the icy fingers of water creep up into our wetsuits. I feel apprehensive as I stare up the uninviting stretch of the Thames towards a destination I can’t see. Suddenly, like a little pod of eager mermaids, we’re off, and I get that familiar feeling. Muscle memory kicks in, breathing stabilises, endorphins flow and the joy of moving through the water dispels all traces of earlier trepidation. It’s the same sense of contentment, whether I’m swimming in the river, a lake, the sea or a pool. Like champagne in the veins! Swimming is one of those life skills that we take for granted. We learn to swim as children and enjoy splashing around the pool with our friends. Many of us lose the habit as we grow older and other parts of life take over. It becomes a faff to get your togs together and get yourself to the pool, not to mention all that changing kerfuffle. As a regular swimmer, I can tell you that the benefits of swimming are legion. It’s a full body workout, be it a doggy paddle, a gentle breaststroke or full-on hammer butterfly. Thirty minutes’ activity in the pool is worth 45 on terra firma. Swimming regularly is great for general wellbeing as it can lower stress levels, reduce anxiety and depression, improve sleep patterns and boost energy levels. And all of these with just a light swim – you don’t need to channel your inner Tom Dean, although this would increase those benefits to Olympian levels. It’s a superb form of exercise for all abilities and ages, particularly notable for the fact it’s non

weight bearing and therefore one of the few ways to stay active during injury or illness. You can go it solo or enjoy an all-encompassing swim with friends and family. Because, most importantly, swimming is fun. It’s the one activity that my kids always vote for. It tires them out in a good way. Summer is the perfect time to get your cozzie on and immerse yourself. Plus, we’re spoilt for choice locally, with the Polehampton Swimming Association pool in Twyford, the recently refurbished 25 metre pools at Bulmershe and Braywick, or the brand-new Carnival pool, part of the new Wokingham Leisure Centre. Caversham Lakes offer all-day open water swimming: here you can discover the benefit of swimming freely without having to turn round every 25 metres, while the kids get wet and happy in the aqua park. Or for a special treat, book yourself a swim session and feed that hungry post-swim body at the beautiful Thames Lido in Reading. Or of course, you can brave the river with me. 6.30am tomorrow. But I’m not telling you where – we river swimmers have our favourite spots and keep them a closely guarded secret!

RG10 resident Jules Lang is a broadcaster and journalist whose voice is familiar to listeners of BBC Radio 2 and Radio Berkshire. She is also a regular open water swimmer. At the end of June she took part for the second time in the Henley Classic, an early-morning 2.1km swim up the course of the Henley Royal Regatta, helping to raise funds for Starlight UK: see www.justgiving.com/fundraising/jules-lang2. Pets in summer Hot dogs (and other animals) position of their cage regularly. Take extra care ahead of leaving the house for some time. Too late? Signs that your pet has overheated include panting (a very strong sign in cats), red gums, vomiting or displaying a lack of coordination. If they show any of these symptoms, it is essential to act quickly.

Animals are not able to release heat through their skin as humans do, which makes them particularly susceptible to overheating during the summer months. Avoid leaving your dog in a car during warm weather, even for a short time. Even if it doesn’t seem that hot to you, and you’ve left the windows open and provided water, they may be at risk of heat stroke within minutes.

Move them into a well-ventilated, shady spot. Offer them cool (not cold) water. With larger animals wrap them in cool damp cloths, particularly the head. Finally, don’t just assume your pet will recover. Contact your vet immediately and be honest with them about what’s caused the problem. They’d rather work towards saving your animal’s life than judge you for a mistake.

Equally, walking your pet in full sun, even for a relatively short period of time, is not at all good for them. It also comes with the added risk of burning the pads of their feet on the pavement. Early morning and evening are better choices during the summer months. Cats don't normally pant until they are already in distress. While most cats instinctively move to cooler locations as soon as they feel too warm, they may become trapped in a hot area such as a greenhouse, garage, shed or conservatory. Smaller caged animals can’t move out of the sun of course, so it is essential to check the 20 rg10 July/August 2022. To advertise please call 0118 907 2510 or email nikki@rg10mag.com

Community update Keep burglars out of your property this summer Simple steps to take this summer:

Some facts about burglars: • Burglars are often opportunistic thieves who prey on houses and flats. • Burglars will target homes they think contain valuables. • Burglars often look for homes with windows or doors left open, or with vulnerable features they can exploit. • Burglars are aware of times people expect to be away from their homes, such as during the school run or holidays. • Burglars typically do not want to be seen or heard, so if they feel they would be noticed by a neighbour or passer-by they are more likely to move on. • Burglars often choose a home because they have spotted a specific vehicle, motorcycle or bicycle they want to steal – and the keys are more than likely to be inside the residence.

• Lock all doors and windows when away from home and at night. For uPVC doors, remember to lift the handle and lock with the key. • Install a video doorbell, alarm or CCTV system. • Keep all valuables and keys, including car keys, out of sight and reach of windows, doors and letterboxes. Double check vehicles are locked and store keyless fobs in a security pouch. • Cut back shrubs and hedges to aid visibility. • Do not leave your home in darkness if you go out in the evening. • Ensure side and rear gates are in good condition and locked to prevent access to the rear of the property. Move bins away from side walls and fences. • Ensure sheds and garages are secure, and security mark and register tools and other items you have stored there. • Keep ladders and gardening tools securely locked away. Do not leave them outside, where they could be used to break into your home. • Do not advertise you are away from home on social media – wait until you return to upload any holiday snaps. Please ask a trusted friend or neighbour to keep an eye on your home while you are away. You can find further information and crime prevention advice on the Thames Valley Police website at www.thamesvalley.police.uk. It’s not just about the wish the charity fulfils for a child but also creating a fantastic memory for them to treasure in difficult times.’ Not surprisingly, Justin has found running consecutive marathons over many weeks an incredibly tough experience so far, but says that the support has been fantastic and it will be worth it when he crosses the finish line in London! A father of three from Twyford, Justin Malin (50), is well on the way to completing 52 marathons in 52 weeks, finishing with the London Marathon in October. ‘I’d been thinking of doing a challenge for a long time,’ said Justin. ‘I started running on Saturday mornings, and the runs just kept getting longer and longer. So, then I thought: why not run some marathons?’ After getting a place in the London Marathon a year in advance, he decided to complete a marathon each week, culminating in the London event. Justin hopes to raise at least £5,252 for Make-A-Wish UK, inspired by his daughter Eva, who works for the charity. ‘She would tell me all these stories about the wishes they were granting for critically ill children,’

Charvil wildlife designation The green spaces of Charvil Country Park and Charvil Meadows have recently been designated Local Wildlife Sites by the Thames Valley Environmental Records Centre. Wokingham Borough Council is installing information boards this summer giving an overview of the wide range of species that live there. Here is some of the wildlife that can be spotted: • Several rare and often colourful species of bees and wasps • Otters inhabiting the burrow created especially for them • Grey herons breeding on the wooded island in the lake to the south • (In winter) gadwall and smew, two nationally important types of wildfowl, along with several wetland bird species including bitterns. Nordic walking at Cantley Park If you are aged 55 and over and want to spend time outdoors, improve your health and meet new people all at the same time, you might like to consider joining the Nordic walking sessions held from 10am every Thursday in Cantley Park, Wokingham. These are run by SHINE, the borough council's programme offering a wide range of activities to suit all abilities, from gentle indoor exercise for beginners right up to Nordic walking (which uses two lightweight hand-held poles).

The Nordic walking sessions last about an hour and are open to anyone able to walk between six and eight kilometres. The focus is on improving core muscles, balance, stamina, and enhancing both physical and social wellbeing. SHINE activities are now open to more people, as the qualifying age has recently been dropped from 60 to 55. They include Tai Chi, yoga, Pilates and seated exercise and are held in several locations – Loddon Hall in Twyford is the venue for ballroom dancing at 2pm on Thursdays! For more information, visit www.wokingham .gov.uk/sports-and-activities and look for the SHINE programme within the section about activities for adults. If you’re planning to take part in any of the races, note that the deadline to enter is 7pm on 12 July. Also, the online booking system has been updated, so even regulars will need to create a new log in and add competitor names from scratch. This historic regatta is one of the highlights of local summer events, with generations of families representing the rival villages either side of the Thames coming together to watch or race in the traditional watercraft: skiffs, punts and canoes. Nearly 1000 individuals compete in 400 races in two days over the short but arduous course. The highlight for many is the hotly contested Dongola class, involving mixed teams of six kneeling in three-foot wide punts, notoriously difficult to steer at the same time as paddling in sync.

Others may delight in watching the antics of those brave enough to try punting in canoes… difficult enough for an individual – what about pairs!? It’s all brilliant fun to watch from the riverbank in Shiplake, where plenty of refreshments are available if you don’t take your own picnic. Vehicle access and pre-bookable parking is via Mill Lane, Shiplake, or there’s a special ferry service laid on for pedestrians from the St George & Dragon in Wargrave (no parking available). PLUS: The regatta’s Open Water Swim takes place on the Saturday morning before the racing starts, with options for 1km, 2km and Go-With-The-Flow distances. The swim event has gone from strength to strength since it was introduced a decade ago. It attracts entries from swimmers of all standards, who get to enjoy a breakfast roll and hot drink afterwards. For all the information, race entries, spectator tickets and parking, visit www.wsregatta.co.uk. Twyford Village Fete A date for your diary: the next Twyford Village Fête, Dog Show and Classic Car Show will be held on Saturday 20 August at Stanlake Meadow Recreation Ground.

First Days 5.3 Run Event Following the success of its inaugural 5.3 Run Event earlier this year, Wokinghambased charity First Days will hold another family running day at Bracknell Athletics Track on Saturday 6 August. Why 5.3? Because there are over 5,300 children living in poverty in Wokingham Borough Council. First Days works hard to reduce this number, whilst supporting their families by providing the essentials they need to have fun, be safe and grow in confidence at school. The 5.3 Run Event is open to all ages, with entrants choosing their own challenge based on the number 5.3. For example: • • • • •

Run 530 metres Run 5.3 laps (2.1km) Run 5.3km (13.25 laps) Run 5.3 miles (21 laps) Ultimate challenge – 53 laps, equivalent to a half marathon, which could be tackled as a relay with friends • Or come up with your own 5.3 run challenge! New for this event:

Organised by Twyford Parish Council, the event is popular with families from all around the local area, with plenty of stalls to browse, activities to join in, live music and other entertainment and various food and drink options available.

• Soft play equipment and games from the charity's toy library on the track in-field • Pre, mid and post-run fuel and refreshments from Unholy Donuts, Phantom Brewery and Sir Whippy • Prizes for most ‘on brand’ outfit, most unique take on 5.3 and smiliest child!

For full details, see the leaflet delivered with this magazine to local households or follow @TwyfordVillageFete on Facebook.

Twyford Comets Football Club Celebrating 50 years Twyford Comets parents, coaches and committee members past and present celebrated the club's 50th anniversary with a dinner-dance in May at Sonning Golf Club. Around 80 guests were treated to good food, wine and live music, and with lots of club memorabilia on show, a great evening was had by all!

banner. Incredibly, Reading FC Women now play at the very highest level and acknowledge their roots can be traced back to the early eighties and Twyford Comets. Today the club once again has a thriving girls' section, with over 50 young players and more now keen to join. Steve Green has been with the club for 20 years, first as a team manager and committee member, and for the last six years as Club Chairman. He says, ‘So much is owed to the managers and coaches who organise and inspire the boys and girls each week. Without their time and dedication, the club would simply not be what it is today.’

Head Coach Brian Rogers enjoying himself

It all began back in 1972, just six years after Bobby Moore famously lifted the World Cup at Wembley. With the English FA celebrating its Centennial Year, local resident Ray Jones put together a boy's football team and formed Twyford Comets FC. Soon more teams were added, and the club started to grow. Then in 1981 Twyford hosted a team from Ulestraten in Holland for what became an annual exchange program that's still going strong today, much due to the tireless efforts over the years of club stalwarts Peter Kelly and Dean Cooper, and more recently Resh Thorpe. But it hasn't just been about the boys… The first Twyford Comets Girls’ team was also formed around that time by another local resident, Doug Cunningham. A few years later this was renamed Reading Royals LFC, training and playing under the Reading FC

Twyford Comets is run entirely by volunteers with 400 players signed to 28 teams. ‘We're also immensely grateful to our team sponsors, most of them local businesses,’ continues Steve. ‘Their financial support goes towards buying new kit for each team and helps keep player subs as low as possible each season.’ Most players start out at the Mini-Comets Soccer School that runs every Saturday morning from 10.15 to 11.30 on King George's Field near Loddon Hall under the watchful eye of the club's head coach, Brian Rogers. Children aged four to six years old are invited to come along and join in. The cost is just £3 per session, and there's no need to book! If your son or daughter is aged seven or over and interested in joining Twyford Comets, then email Club Secretary Andrew Farmery at clubsecretary@twyfordcomets.com, or contact the age group manager directly. Visit www.twyfordcomets.com for all team contact details.

Daisy’s Dream Alleviating isolation in bereavement young people are more likely to experience future health, social and educational difficulties and disadvantages. This is in addition to any effect on their emotional health and wellbeing. The Daisy’s Dream service is tailored and delivered entirely free of charge by professionally trained therapeutic practitioners. The service includes telephone advice and support for a parent or carer, one-to-one support for children at home or school, group events and a host of information available on the charity website. Group events offer the opportunity for children to come together, which often helps to relieve the sense of isolation that a bereaved child can feel. The charity has only recently been able to restart group sessions following the pandemic but has already received some amazing feedback from both parents and children about their positive impact. It’s a stark statistic that every 22 minutes, somewhere in the UK a child is bereaved of a parent. That equates roughly to one child in every school class. For the past 26 years, local charity Daisy’s Dream has been offering advice and support to children, young people and their families who have been affected by the death or critical illness of someone they love. In the last year alone, Daisy’s Dream has supported over 800 children from nearly 600 families in Berkshire and surrounding areas. The demand for their service continues to grow every year. ‘At Daisy’s Dream, we believe that no child’s future should be defined by a death or a life-limiting illness within the family,’ says Gill Stevens, Director. ‘Given time and support, we believe that children and young people can learn to cope with the changing dynamics of their life and ultimately move forwards in a positive way.’ Research shows that without the opportunity to explore their grief and express their feelings,

‘I liked getting to know each other… it made me realise I am not alone,’ was one of the wonderful comments received from a child who went along. ‘Being able to relate made her feel less of an odd one out,’ commented the parent of another child. ‘She also mentioned that it will help her going forward in how to deal with things and how to talk about something if she is upset: absolutely invaluable, as she came away empowered and supported.’ Although the charity receives a small amount of grant funding from other charitable trusts, it does not receive any money from central government or local authorities. Sarah Pilbrow, Fundraising & Communications Manager, explains: ‘We rely on the amazing support of our local communities and businesses to help us raise the majority of the £450,000 we need annually to continue supporting local children going through the toughest of times. This presents us with a formidable task, particularly this year, but one which we are tackling head on!’

Al fresco reading For avid readers, there are few things more pleasurable than lounging in the sun (or shade) with a good book. Silverview – John le Carré John le Carré’s final book was published posthumously with the help of his son. It’s everything you’d expect from the master of spy fiction, and more. The story centres on Julian, who’s moved to the English countryside for a quieter life, Edward, who seems to know an awful lot about Julian’s background, and Proctor, a British spy trying to uncover the source of a leak. Fast-paced, tightly plotted and intriguing, this short book is a worthy contender for your list of holiday reading.

Charred – Genevieve Taylor Whether you’re a fully-fledged vegetarian or just want to expand your barbecue repertoire, you’ll find plenty of inspiration in Charred, subtitled ‘the complete guide to vegetarian grilling and BBQ’. Here you’ll find everything from veggie kebabs to Miso Grilled Aubergine or Smoked Mushrooms With Sherry & Garlic Cream. Simple to follow and with mouth-watering photos, this could quickly become your go-to summer cookbook.

S Green Plumbing & Heating Boiler man with a conscience This fundraising initiative has enabled S Green Plumbing & Heating to donate hundreds of pounds each year to the members of Twyford Charities Together: Age Concern Twyford & District, ARC Counselling, Building for the Future, Camp Mohawk, Daisy’s Dream and Twyford District Youth and Community Centre. The idea is a win-win for everyone: • • • Ruscombe-based heating engineer Stephen Green is at it again! He’s donating £10 to local charities for each boiler service booked in July and August. A standard service costs just £84, and getting the boiler checked over the summer gives peace of mind ahead of the heating going back on in the autumn.

Homeowners and landlords potentially save time and money S Green Plumbing & Heating have fewer callouts for emergency repairs over the winter The charities receive a much-needed boost at a time of reduced fundraising opportunities.

Book in your boiler service today! Also, ask about minimising the risk of costly repair bills through an annual maintenance contract (available to homeowners in RG10).

twyford together

News update So many people worked hard behind the scenes to make all the events happen – too many people to mention, but thank you all. Finally, thanks to everyone who came along: you made it all worthwhile. Summer events The last Sunday in June saw the first Gordon Storey Memorial 5-A-Side Football Tournament at King George V Field. My thanks to Lisa Fouweather of Kitchen & Bathroom Place and Kurt Charge of Twyford Comets for putting this event together, and all those who volunteered and took part on the day.

The colourful umbrellas are back! Thanks again to Nick Wheeler of NW Property Maintenance for the expert installation of the umbrellas provided by Benedict Charles Financial Planning. The Queen's Platinum Jubilee Thanks to Ian and Sue Wisdom of Twyford Beer Festival for providing the facilities and hosting some brilliant events over the extended Jubilee holiday in early June. Ian set up the Beer Festival site a week early so that other events could be put on. Fantastic! The Fearlessly Odd Festival kicked things off on the Thursday, which was terrific fun: great work from joint organisers Sabrina Findlay of Music Made Fearless and Jack Trimble of Oddbody Tattoo Studio. Big thanks also to Emma Saville for providing scones, cakes, and strawberries and cream on both Friday and Saturday. The Street Party in The Park on Saturday was a big success, blessed with glorious weather. Thanks to Boxset for some great live music – also to DJ Wizz for reminding us about gold lamé!

On Monday 11 August we will be holding the first meeting after a long break of the Twyford Together Business Forum. This is an informal event open to all Twyford-connected businesses, retailers, charities and community clubs. Just come along to Buratta’s for a 5.30pm start. There’ll be a short but interesting talk on the Dark Web and how to protect data, and plenty of time for networking. There’s no cost other than buying your own drinks, but please bring some cash in order to make a donation towards the cost of the food laid on by Buratta’s. Looking further ahead, we’re delighted to confirm that the Twyford Together Charity 5k and Fun Run will return on Sunday 9 October – save the date! Also this autumn we will be bringing back the Twyford Together Community Awards, so watch this space! In the meantime, enjoy the summer folks.

Foot care Looking after your feet Our feet are our first point of contact with the world, and yet too often we cram them into ill-fitting shoes and leave them until last when it comes to self-care. From athlete’s foot to ingrown toenails, there are a variety of issues that can crop up as a result of poor foot care. So, what can you do to – literally – put your best foot forward, and how can you resolve any issues should they arise?

Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection that is often picked up by walking barefoot in communal spaces such as changing rooms and swimming pools. It usually starts between the toes and can cause significant discomfort and itching.

Prevention is better than cure

Ledderhose disease is a rare condition that causes connective tissue to build up and create hard lumps on the soles of the feet, which can can cause pain when walking. Remedies include wearing soft shoe inserts, stretching, massage and anti-inflammatory drugs, but doctors might also recommend surgery in more serious cases.

The best place to start is with your choice of shoe. A good pair of shoes should support and protect your feet and allow natural movement when walking. Look for breathable fabrics, roomy toe-boxes, cushioned soles and low heels. Although wearing high heels once in a while won’t do much harm, long-term use has been linked to ingrown toenails and even arthritis. Once you’re wearing the right shoes, keeping your feet in good condition should be fairly straightforward. Using a pumice stone or foot file on pressure points and around the heel will keep hard skin at bay, and applying a moisturising foot cream daily will help prevent cracking. It’s also a good idea to check your feet regularly for cuts, sores, redness or swelling. This is especially important if you’re diabetic, because raised blood sugar levels can lead to a reduction in the blood supply to the feet, making it take longer for wounds to heal.

Over-the-counter fungal creams are the best solution, but it’s also important to keep your feet clean and dry between treatments.

Foot care professionals If you’re experiencing any aches, pains or symptoms in your feet, consult a specialist to help diagnose any issues and advise next steps. A chiropodist is the same as a podiatrist – the former name comes from British English, whereas the latter American name is more widely recognised internationally. Having regular chiropody treatments becomes more important as we age, not least because it becomes more difficult to take care of our feet ourselves as we lose flexibility.

When it comes to foot care, toenail trimming is key. The trick here is little and often. Experts recommend trimming your nails every six to eight weeks, cutting them straight across using clean, sharp clippers. The best time is just after a bath when they’re softer, but be careful not to cut them too short. Foot problems Ingrown toenails are often the result of over-trimming: besides being extremely painful, the worst cases may need minor surgery to resolve.
