The gardens are open from 2.00pm to 5.00pm.

There will be delicious home made cakes and teas available made by the PCC to raise funds for our local churches In 2020, the NGS donated £2.88 million, and despite the challenges of the year, over 72p in every £1 raised at the open gardens goes straight to the beneficiaries.

EH Arts and Crafts Community Centre - Charity no. 1191455 As you may know, we are working towards opening the former Catholic Church. The Arts and Crafts Community Centre Charity will be the tenants of the Parish Council. As the building was bought by the Parish Council a about 6 years ago on behalf of the community, we are keen to take on the property as tenants and rescue it from its present state of decay and neglect.

We have a quotation and started to gather materials together to do the following works:- provide a one to one room fitted out for use by a social prescribing team; install the necessary electrics around the space in conjunction with the plans for exhibiting work; and to lay new flooring throughout.

As an independent Arts and Crafts Community Centre, we will be bringing our ideas, activities and facilities to the area for involvement by the community. The vision being to have a group of people interested in creating and running the garden – developing this into a space that we can all be proud of, with some outside seating and planting which is useful as well as beautiful. Inside the building the core is delivering facilities to enable arts and crafts and of course a meeting space.

Whilst we are all in the holding position awaiting the finalising of the lease from the Parish Council, our landlords, we would like to offer everyone the opportunity of sharing their support and belief in our venture by contacting us to become a friend of the Arts and Crafts Community Centre. For £1 we will give you a membership card and a drinks token which will be redeemed once we have a space that we can serve you in.

This month the church will be celebrating its 159th Anniversary so we thought we’d share a snippet of how it all began.

The first recorded preaching in this area by a Baptist was in 1862 in the home of Mr James Powell, Lion Row, Ewyas Harold and in that same year Ebenezer Baptist Church, Ewyas Harold, was formed by the Revd. Edmund Edwards (also known as ‘Bombay Edwards’ of Zoar Chapel, Pandy).

In 1864 land was purchased from Thomas Pugh, Bridge Farm for £30 and a Baptist Chapel was built and opened for public worship on 15th June 1865.

As we celebrate our Anniversary we remember all those who have journeyed before us, and give thanks to God for their faithful service. We also in looking to the future thank God for His continued love, faithfulness and goodness, and pray that He will show us how we are to be His church in this generation.

In At The Deep End

By Chris Franks You may be familiar with the prestigious Bromsgrove School in Worcestershire. Well, I didn't go there, I went to the one on the other side of the road, Watt Close Church of England!

It was the sort of school where if you were the short fat kid you always had a regular beating, that was me.

One day one of the teachers, Mr Keepax who taught games and mathematics, I was no good at either and he hated me, cornered me and told me I was to become a prefect.

Prefects had beatings too, so can you imagine, short fat kid and a prefect, no way could this happen. I pleaded with Mr Keepax not to send me down that road. Eventually he told me to stop crying and that he would think of a job for me.

Two days later he cornered me again, twisted my ear and said come with me. We went to a locked cupboard and he told me I was to become the school projectionist. The school had a semi professional 16mm projector with speakers, it was the only thing available in those days to show anything en masse, it was the 1970s.

My mind was spinning, I reckoned that if the others beat the projectionist then they wouldn't get the film and wouldn't miss lessons, I was on to a winner and told Mr Keepax I would do it. It turned out that I still got beatings because if you helped the teachers in anyway that's what would happen to you!

I remember projecting Treasure Island one Christmas for the entire school and on another occasion very boring hockey films for the girls.

One day I had to show a safety film.

Kids were meeting their ends in power stations while flying kites, on train tracks retrieving footballs and falling into pits on buildings sites.

Loads of gory bits, it was quite graphic, absolute gold when you're 11. I was able to freeze frame the image on all the best bits and I simply had to give my mates a preview.

So, at lunch time before our class had seen the film I got Fat Phill, Compost Culverton, Knuckles Pemberton and others together for a look see. While the film was frozen on a gory bit and we were all discussing how they achieved the effect,Miss Feltham, our Form teacher rumbled us and began to rebuke us for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Then Fat Phil said,"Look at the screen".

I had left the projector on while being told off. The hot light bulb in the projector was melting the celluloid film, you’re not supposed to freeze frame for more than 30 seconds and the image was bubbling and dripping. Then the film snapped and the film spool began to spin on the support arm, disaster!

I remember sitting outside the headmasters office when Mr Keepax emerged with a very disappointed look on his face. The projector had to be sent away to a laboratory in Birmingham to have the film gate cleaned of molten celluloid.

I was given an invoice for my father for £54. Not a dismissive sum of money, even for 1977.

Luke 16 chapter 10 tells us that those who can be trusted with the small things can also be trusted with the larger things. In later years, after many years of guilt, I have come to the conclusion that my story is more about Mr Keepax than myself.

He entrusted an expensive piece of equipment to an 11 year old boy. I feel I was thrown in at the deep end, and not given the chance to be trusted with something smaller to begin with. However, if Miss Feltham had not distracted me everything would have been ok!

Jesus is not physically with us but he is in spirit and his teachings are certainly alive and kicking.

As Christians we have the responsibility to administer and adhere to these teachings, spread the word, take responsibility in all aspects and build each other up with trust and confidence in all the things we do and when we come across a Mr Keepax help them to keep things in proportion. Amen.
