Dear neighbours

Seger’s song present the words as a plea for world peace: "a time for peace, I swear it's not too late.”

I wonder what September means to you? My childhood recollections are of returning to school, a new Michaelmas term, a new year ahead, and, around the equinox, a birthday. Mine. I love September!

Peace is in short supply, as ever, as the debacle of the withdrawal from Afghanistan brings yet more horrors to our news and social media. Perhaps we hardly notice? Perhaps we hear and see what is happening without it sinking into our consciousness, just as we heard and saw hundreds of thousands of excess deaths in the UK? Surely if we really took it in, we’d do more than let the season turn, turn, turn? Wouldn’t we want to rise up and protest the inhumanity of it all?

Long before the name (Septem) of the seventh month of the Roman year that began in March was adopted into English, this was Hāligmonath - Holy month - a time for celebrating the harvest of the summer crops. Yet the equinox with its day and night of equal length points to the turning of the seasons, and looks ahead to the beginning of winter at the October full month - Winterfylleth ‘winter full moon’ is Old English for the eighth month October.

Are we content to ddle while the earth burns? To walk by on the other side as the food logistics chains collapse? To wash our hands of any responsibility for the anguished pleas of those who seek asylum?

The turning of the seasons, to every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. Or turn, turn, turn as Peter Seger wrote in his late ‘50s hit of that name drawing almost exclusively on verses from the Bible found in Ecclesiastes 3 vs 1-8.

Will it be an unholy month of pretence or will we be the change we wish to see? I wonder what this September will mean for you?

In Ewyas Harold, the welcome return of Wednesday @ 10.30 brings the number of services at St Michael’s each month up to six. The Rev’d Joy James begins her sabbatical and the Baptist Church now has a monthly service in the church, as well as one on Zoom.

Across the Deanery - fancy church name for our patch (the Black Mountains and Golden Valley) people are getting to meet Angie Kateley who will be with us for the next three to four years of training following her ordination in July.

Walterstone is rst to hold a Harvest Festival, and Bacton look forward to Morning Prayer at the cooks’ favourite time of 11.15 makes it easier to prepare the roast, or so I’m told.

We will have news very soon of the person who will join Luci Morriss, Simon Lockett and me as one of the four (not ve, now that Nicholas Lowton has retired) full time deanery priests. Now I’ve typed that, you can guarantee an announcement will be made any moment. Exciting times.

Dore Abbey welcomes the Unicorn Singers for Choral Evensong on the 26th. This is followed by a short concert. The Unicorns return on Oct 3rd for Holy Communion with the Bishop of Hereford who will commission Diane Bates as an Anna Chaplain.

October will bring the nal stage of our move to Parish Clusters. Each PCC has been discussing with neighbouring churches how best to co-operate in providing not just Sunday services but the whole range of ministry and mission activities.

St Peter’s, Rowlestone, have an autumnal Evening Prayer as they look for a new treasurer, while St Devereux are back in business following oor repairs.

The Gathering on October 19th will celebrate the new Clusters, and set us on track for the next few years. Good news indeed.

Dear Friends,

Anna is named after the faithful prophet and widow who ‘sat by night and by day in the temple’ (Luke 2.26) She was with Simeon when the infant Jesus was brought into the temple by his parents to be “presented”. They recognised him as the Redeemer. She was a prayerful woman constantly on the look out - as we must be.

On Sunday 3rd October at 4pm at Dore Abbey our Deanery will be ‘pioneering’ again, this time with the formation of an Anna Chaplaincy. This is a ‘ rst’ not only for the Deanery, but for the Hereford Diocese and I am pleased to be the rst Chaplain to be commissioned by Bishop Richard.

There are currently 167 Anna Chaplaincies across England, Scotland and Wales and growing all the time.

Offering spiritual care in later life An Anna Chaplaincy is a complementary ministry, and in no way in competition with any of the valuable pastoral work that is already happening within the Deanery of which the Hub in Peterchurch is a shining example.

Anna Chaplaincy is about providing spiritual background support for those in older age, whether they would describe themselves as people of faith or not.

You are cordially invited to come and join us for that service of Evensong and Commissioning . . . followed by a tea party, and to be part of celebrating this new venture.

The right direction It is a source of wonder that God has entrusted the formation of this important ministry to me in the rst instance and, indeed, to us. There were times during the past three years when I could have thrown up my hands and said ‘I can’t do this it is just too dif cult’ and walked away - but all the time knowing it had to happen. He would not let it go and so, after that time of exploration, prayer, lobbying and just knowing it to be the right

It is also a joy to be able to announce that the Borderlands Rural Chaplains are very enthusiastic about Anna Chaplaincy and want to walk alongside us on this formative journey, even to the extent of inviting us to their ‘mucky boots’ meetings! We look forward to drawing on their experience and working with them.

A tried and tested path An initial early task will be to initiate the formation of a network of other Anna Chaplains - this is in no way a ‘one-woman’ show - and indeed this task has already started. It involves a selection process to assess suitability, Anna training and DBS checks but there is a tried and tested path for this and people from all walks of life are engaged in this ministry across the country.

In addition, Anna Chaplains need the prayerful and practical support of ‘Anna Friends’ - could you be one for us? It can be a pleasurable and enjoyable task . . . please think about it.

A Chaplain is an appointed person who takes the love and concern of (continued) God’s Church into the community and an Anna Chaplain strives to draw alongside older people to discover their needs, hopes and aspirations and encourage them to do, and be all that they can be. To give time to lend a listening ear and to befriend and celebrate this time in their lives.

The new Speed Indication Device on Pontrilas Road greets those entering EH with their vehicle’s speed.

The police presence at the School was a reminder to all who park in School Road of the dangers of parking on pavements and in the school drop-off zone. As well as posing a danger to children and parents, access by emergency vehicles is impeded.

As Christians we are called to journey together and not on our own, and at EHBC as we do this we seek to place our trust in God and to follow Him. Sometimes the journey isn’t easy and we’re not sure which way we are to go, but as we move forward we can be assured of God’s guiding hand and His presence with us.

In Memoriam The Rev Dr Christopher Armstrong

Longtown Historical Society was established in 1971 to

promote knowledge of local history in an area of southwest Herefordshire between the Golden Valley and the Black Mountains.

This includes much of the ancient Hundred of Ewyas Lacy, now centred on the village of Longtown.

In 1967, Christopher and Meriel bought the mill at Rowlstone, a few months before their wedding in Rowlstone church in that September.

Thereafter, the mill was their treasured home whenever Christopher’s ministerial commitments elsewhere allowed.

They looked after the property, kept bees, planted trees. This continued until they moved north to be nearer to their daughter in 2006.

We are pleased to report that Longtown & District Historical Society will be restarting its programme of talks in September.

The rst meeting will be at 7.30pm on September 6th in Longtown Village Hall, when Tim Hoverd of Herefordshire Archaeology will be telling us about his latest excavations at Snodhill Castle.

Christopher felt a deep commitment to the bene ce, and leaves two lasting memorials. The Abbey Dore to Craswall pilgrimage was his idea, and he and Meriel fought hard to prevent Llancillo being made redundant and instead recognised by the Friends of Friendless Churches.

Tim is a regular and popular speaker at the Society and will get us off to a very good start! Please spread the word to others you know who may be interested.

"That's an old tree, when was it planted?"

"I think it was a Thursday."

"Er, Ashley, the chap reading Jesus, do you think he's totally appropriate?"

"Who, Chris? Yeah, no problem," Ashley replied. The authoritarian chap wandered off looking very bemused. I don't know why because in Ireland I would imagine most bible readings are read with an Irish accent. During the reading the look on the chaps face was priceless, the anticipation for him was excruciating. Of course, I spoke as I normally do, and his relief was more than visible.

Some of you may remember a few years ago at Wormbridge, BBC Radio Hereford and Worcester came to record a morning worship. We had a rehearsal then the actual recording that was broadcast. As usual all are welcome and there were many people at both events, some I had never seen before and many I have never seen since. I was taking part in a group reading and of course had been chosen to read the most important part.I can't remember if this happened during the rehearsal or the recording but I was approached by an unknown, white haired, authoritarian style gentleman, I'm sure you know the type!

My second story involved me doing some work for a well to do elderly lady in her herb garden around a new ground oor kitchen extension to her country house. The double doors were open, and I could clearly hear Terry Wogan’s morning radio programme. Eventually she came out,"Would you like a cup of tea young man?"

I replied,"Yes please, that's very kind of you. Are you a TOG?" Just an attempt to make conversation. She looked at me with total bemusement but I had to go through with it I was committed.

He said,"Hello, are you taking part in this, performance?" in his most arrogant and pompous tone.

I replied in the strongest Irish accent I could muster,"I'm going to read the part of Jesus."

"I beg your pardon young man?"

If the authoritarian guy had been using a monocle it would have fallen out, "Good lord," he said and shot straight over to the then vicar Ashley Evans who hadn't heard any of this.

"Are you a TOG, one of Terries Old Geezas?"

I think I'm correct in saying that that was what he called his listeners.

Prolonged bemusement, then, ”Would you like a Digestive?" I thought I’d make it a chocolate one after all this effort!

Talk about misunderstandings or getting the wrong end of the stick. In the rst story, I probably manufactured the misunderstanding but I always give people the opportunity to express a sense of humour, it doesn't always work though does it. Not everyone appreciates a Scooby Doo or decent Kenneth Williams impression,"Oh Matron, no."

The Bible is full of misunderstanding and people getting the wrong end of the stick. I nd the Parables are a good antidote to this problem. A Parable is a short, simple story of common life that conveys a spiritual truth. Jesus used earthly stories to teach but only those who sought the truth were able to understand them.

The listener is forced to see the truth, to make a decision or come to a moment of faith. The Parables of Jesus reveal to us the nature of God. The wisdom within the Parables can calm the re within us, curb our enthusiasm for con ict, iron out misunderstanding.

A good example of explaining a misunderstanding, from a spiritual point of view,I think is the story of the vineyard workers in Mathew 20 verses 1-16. Those who were hired to work at the start of the day were payed the same as those hired at the end of the day. Those hired at the start complained that they had worked all day for the same as those who had only worked for a few hours and it wasn't fair.

You could say it isn't fair from a practical point of view but the

essence of this story is not about payment it's about salvation. The vineyard owner can be as free as he likes with his assets, God can be as free with his rewards as he likes. If you have followed the path for longer than others don't be jealous of those who also receive Gods reward having seen the truth later in life or even at the very end.

It is said that if one sinner repents, he or she is worth a hundred righteous people. The rst shall be last and the last shall be rst! The wisdom or nature of God is revealed here to us in this parable, this wisdom does not come from a human mind, it clearly comes from somewhere else!

This last and rst business is blatantly demonstrated to us during the cruci cation.Two robbers are cruci ed alongside Jesus. One of them rebukes Jesus saying that if you are the son of God, use your powers to save yourself and us. The other robber rebukes the rst telling him that he does not understand in who's presence they hang. We are justly condemned but this man has done no wrong.

This robber, this criminal gets it. He understands the concept of Jesus's ministry. Jesus tells him he will be with him in heaven that day, the robber receives redemption almost at the point of death. What happened to the other criminal - who knows what - will happen to you. We have free will to make the choice!
