November begins as a season of remembering and ends with a new beginning as Advent Sunday heralds a new year. We begin the month with tears of sorrow and thankfulness, and end it sitting in the darkness waiting for the light to return. It’s a month shrouded in mystery, holding the secret to our desires and longings, that in turn reveal who we are.

This November also begins with COP26 - the fears and desires of all that inhabit the earth writ large amid the posturing of modern day kings, emperors, jesters and fools. Thank God for Her Majesty the Queen, for David Attenborough and Greta Thunberg.

May God bless us with a restless discomfort about easy answers, half-truths, and super cial relationships, so that we may seek truth boldly and love deep within our hearts.

May God bless us with holy anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people, so that we may tirelessly work for justice, freedom, and peace among all people.

May God bless us with the gift of tears to shed for those who suffer from pain, rejection, starvation, or the loss of all that they cherish, so that we may reach out our hand to comfort them and transform their pain into joy.

May God bless us with enough foolishness to believe that we really can make a difference in this world, so that we are able, with God’s grace, to do what others claim cannot be done.

Ten years ago or so I started opening my house on Wednesday for quiet, re ection and prayer, with the support of Churches Together in EH.

Some of you will remember and will have been. It continued during all that time with the help and support of a small group of leaders and regular attenders, until the interruption we have all experienced of ‘lockdown’.

Not being able to receive people into my house, House of Prayer came to a full stop.

I’ve forgotten how it happened now, maybe someone suggested it to me, but I started sending a short re ection and prayers by email to those who used to come.

I guess we should never be surprised at the unexpected, for within two or three months a handful in number turned into twenty who met together for an hour each Wednesday morning, or when they were able, from across the country and the Atlantic!

It will be quite clear to you that should we return to the ‘old’ format of meeting at my house many would be excluded, so the emails continue each week.

Included in the emails is a re ection, usually a short piece of music, and prayers.

Some of our number, contribute a re ection week by week while others are happy just to receive.

So, House of Prayer is now called ‘Houses of Prayer’, as we share together from our own homes.

Making Peace

by Denise Levertov A voice from the dark called out, “The poets must give us imagination of peace, to oust the intense, familiar imagination of disaster. Peace, not only the absence of war.”

But peace, like a poem, is not there ahead of itself, can’t be imagined before it is made, can’t be known except in the words of its making, grammar of justice, syntax of mutual aid.

A feeling towards it, dimly sensing a rhythm, is all we have until we begin to utter its metaphors, learning them as we speak.

A line of peace might appear if we restructured the sentence our lives are making, revoked its reaf rmation of pro t and power, questioned our needs, allowed long pauses. . . .

A cadence of peace might balance its weight on that different fulcrum; peace, a presence, an energy eld more intense than war, might pulse then, stanza by stanza into the world, each act of living one of its words, each word a vibration of light—facets of the forming crystal.

The current Covid level in Herefordshire is high and we are continuing to take great care with the cleaning regime. Going forward we are looking at signi cant improvements to the toilets. Watch this (small) space!

2. Overall, The Recreation Ground continues to be a huge E.H. success story and we are delighted to be able to report that it won’t be long before the new zip line is in situ. Many of have also commented on the lovely new fencing that has been installed.

3. Finally a big shout out to the football club who have had great success attracting lots of keen new members recently including a high proportion of girls so well done to all involved. Now if we can just persuade everyone to keep it tidy and dog mess free…

4. Cattle Grid in Dark Lane. The cattle grid at the Ewyas Harold Common end of Dark Lane is about to be replaced, with a new one being fabricated by Collins as we speak. This should make crossing it by car or by foot a bit less hairy than at present.

5. Anyone else for tennis? After the last post enquiring about levels of interest in a potential tennis club for the area we are delighted to report that we have been contacted by at least one interested party so please do get in touch if you want to partner up!

ABBEY DAFFODIL BULBS

I would like to say a big THANK YOU to all those involved in planting 500 native da odils in the grounds of Dore Abbey on Saturday 9th October.

Thank you to the PCC; Sue Young, for sourcing the bulbs; and all those lovely people who came along to help. Not forgetting Sarah Roberts and Hazel Prowse who provided co ee and cake. Thanks too, to all those who made generous nancial contributions. The cost of bulbs was funded by the Abbey PCC, therefore any further donations would be very welcome.

Looking ahead to Advent Sunday, 28th November Advent can simply be consumed by the run-up to Christmas, or it can be the beginning of the season that stretches through the darkness of winter to the feast of Candlemas on February 2nd.

The trauma of the pandemic, and the stark realities of climate change ll us with fears, anxieties, frustrations, pains, regrets, shame and confusion. In the watching and waiting of Advent, we watch the struggle of new life emerging and wonder about our capacity to bear it. We watch in hope not sure of the form the future will take. We watch in joy, expectant in the possibilities of freedom, delighting in the gift of new birth.

This year there are two opportunities to celebrate Advent Sunday. The rst at Dore Abbey at 10.30am will draw on the beauty of the church; the wisdom of the bible; the tradition of prayer and silence; and the senses through bread, incense, movement, music and song. Dress warmly, bring a wrap or a rug. 45 mins, plenty of space. Please remember a face-covering.

Then at St Michael’s, Ewyas Harold at 5pm Advent Light and Winter Darkness is a candlelit time of music, poetry, prayer and silence. A warm welcome awaits as we herald the mystery of the light shining in the darkness, singing, ‘O come, O come Emmanuel.’

We are not counsellors, just a friendly group of people who enjoy craft and a natter …

Arts and Crafts Community Centre

Here at St Mary’s Kentchurch we are pleased to report that “Net Zero Carbon” emissions were well and truly achieved at our harvest festival service, with all the owers and produce displayed being grown within the parish. Also due to the sunny afternoon the refreshments (all sourced within Abbeydore Deanery) were enjoyed outside with no necessity for heat or light. Thanks to everyone who provided produce/ owers, all you helped clean the church and everyone who purchased goods in aid of church funds.

In recognition of the achievement of Roland Watkins being awarded The Order of St. Ethelbert, the bells were rung by a group of regular ringers.

Several of us were fortunate to attend the evensong service at the cathedral for Roland’s presentation and if you have a spare moment whilst visiting Hereford do pop in the cathedral as the building is something to be admired and of course it’s only just on our doorstop.

Bishop Richard is hosting a number of listening events across the diocese. He will be in Abbeydore Deanery on Wednesday 10th November between 5.30pm and 7.00pm at Escleyside Hall.

The purpose of this event is for the Bishop to af rm the prayer life of our churches and to encourage the mission and ministry of the diocese as well as listening and learning rst hand to the challenges and opportunities faced in our parishes. He will ask four key questions at the event – details of this can be found on the diocese website – www.hereford.anglican.org A huge thank you to those who already support Hereford Food Bank through the collection points in many of our churches…the need continues to grow, so if you can make a donation, it is much valued.

Abbeydore McMillan Coffee Mornin We had a lovely morning and so good to be together again and revisiting our coffee and cake making skills! In spite of it being a rainy morning everyone had a jolly time and we raised a very heartening £535 for the wonderful work done by McMillan nurses caring for people at the end of life in their own homes.

Sorry Day Dawson was a local who if you got on the wrong side off and upset, you could end up having a very sorry day indeed. I however didn't know the person and had never heard of him.

Sorry Day stopped and chatted to us as the others new him and he kept looking over at me. Eventually he said,"Hello Chris, how's the bike going?" I then recognised him as one of the bikers who had helped me in Builth Wells. The others were bemused and shocked at the fact that I knew him and was on such good speaking terms.

A Brief Encounter by Chris Franks Many years ago,I was about 16,I got around on this 50cc motorbike which wasn't all that reliable. One day I broke down in Builth Wells of all places and was stuck on the side of the road wondering what on earth to do next. I have no idea how stuff works,I just use it.

I was trying to figure out what was wrong with my high powered ride in a vein attempt to convince passers by that I new what I was doing when I heard the rumble of a dream machine pull up next to me. Astride this motorbike were the two roughest individuals you could have possibly met. They were a few years older than me I had no idea what was going to happen next.

Eventually Sorry Day walked off and the others turned to me and asked how I knew him. I was thinking ahead here to try and gain an advantage,"Who Sorry Day, yeah we've been mates for ages, we go way back." From that day on I never had any abuse from anyone on the council due to the word spreading that I was a big friend of Sorry Day Dawson.

My fears soon dissolved when they dismounted and asked me what was wrong and if they could help, phew!

They looked at my bike and we chatted about stuff as they beavered away on a solution.

I expect you've got the gist of my theme, books, covers, judging. Well how true that saying is and how often we all still get the wrong end of the stick when it comes to appearances. We all do it, all the time, admit it! Just because the two in my story rode a motorbike and looked as rough as a rat catchers dog doesn't mean they were bad or worthless. They turned out to be two individuals who could see someone in need off assistance and had the consideration to stop and help. No one else stopped to help me that day and I don't know what I would have done if they hadn't.

Eventually my bike fired up into life with the usual hair dryer power. I thanked them for their help and offered them a fiver, all I had on me at the time. They politely refused at first, then accepted, in those days a fiver could buy you over eight pints of Welsh bitter.

Some months after this event I was working in Brecon town centre,I had a job with the council. The others were always taking the mickey because I was English not Welsh and giving me all the rough jobs as I was the youngest. When walking down the road came this really dodgy looking individual and all the others said,"Watch it, it's Sorry Day."

How often do you find out that someone is to marry, you ask about the bride or groom and what they do. Within a nano second of finding out you place them into a pigeon hole due to finance or how

our society judges their worth from their occupation. It takes too long and too much effort to bother to get to know someone and what they're really like to judge their true worth or potential, doesn't it?

bleep bleep do you think you are, going to a dinner lounge." ( Talk about knowing your place).

Look at the story in John chapter 4 about the Samaritan woman by the well, she judges herself by her own cover. She was a member of a hated mixed race, she had broken many moral codes and was in public.No respectable Jewish man would speak to such a woman in those days under those circumstances but Jesus did. Jesus asks her for a drink, she replies by saying,"How is it that you a Jew, ask me, a woman of Samaria for water?"

We even judge ourselves by our own covers sometimes and are judged by people around us within that cover also, limiting our potential to breakout and perform. The waste of human potential, the potential to do good for others because we are held back by perception is,I think, the biggest waste of all.

The Irish comedian, Roy Walker, he did the game show Catchphrase,"Say what you see," you remember, told a story once about such an incident. He'd got a job as a host at a club in the local town.

He emerged from upstairs for the first time dressed in a dinner jacket. His working class family asked what on earth he was doing. He said he was doing a gig at a dinner lounge. The reply from his family was," A dinner lounge, who the

Christianity teaches us that the gospels are for everyone, despite social position, race, past sin or appearance. Jesus crossed these barriers and as Christians we have to do the same to share his teachings with others helping us to love our neighbours as we love ourselves.
