El renacer del The Renaissance of

Desde 2009 el Colectivo Plaza Corregidor trabaja para devolver el valor histórico y patrimonial de este sector del centro de Santiago, en busca de que sea declarado zona típica. Un proyecto que lo ha ido transformando en polo del diseño independiente y la cultura. Since 2009, the Plaza Corregidor Collective has been working to restore the history and legacy of Barrio Esmeralda in downtown Santiago, hoping it will soon be named a ‘typical area’: a national heritage site protected by law. The project has made the neighbourhood a magnet for independent design and culture.

lejandra Rosas era la dueña del Café Boa, ubicado frente a la Posada del Corregidor, en el centro de Santiago. Desde allí, durante los tres años que estuvo en funcionamiento, observaba este monumento histórico del siglo XVIII, declarado como tal en 1970 y que marcó el punto de partida del proyecto Barrio Esmeralda. “Nos dimos cuenta que el barrio tenía un potencial mayor al que inicialmente estábamos viendo”, recuerda la periodista y también gestora cultural, pero no sólo por la antigua construcción, sino porque estaban a cuadras de lo que fue la Chimba, del Mercado Central, la Estación Mapocho, del Parque Forestal y del Bellas Artes.
Alejandra Rosas was the owner of Café Boa, across the street from the Posada del Corregidor in the centre of Santiago. For the three years that the Café was open, she would often look across to the beautiful 18th century building, officially declared a national heritage site in 1970, which would later become the cornerstone of the Barrio Esmeralda restoration project. “We are aware that the neighbourhood had more potential than was first apparent”, says Rosas, a journalist and cultural advisor, “not only because of the historical buildings, but also because of its location just a few streets from the Chimba, the Mercado Central, Estación Mapocho, Parque Forestal and Bellas Artes.”
