un vínculo de vida Pensando en las madres A link of life. Thinking about mothers Mayo es un mes muy especial en Paraguay, Perú, Chile, Uruguay y Bolivia por la celebración que se realiza en estos países a las madres y a cualquier figura femenina que esté en nuestras vidas. La revista Amaszonas las conmemora de una forma diferente: con una campaña de concienciación sobre la lactancia materna. Sabemos que amamantar a un niño no es solo ofrecerle nutrientes sino también darle amor, vida y fortalecer la relación con él. El vínculo que se genera entre madre e hijo es maravilloso. Dar de lactar proporciona una experiencia singular afectiva tanto para la mamá como para el hijo: los hace a ambos estar más cerca uno del otro, conocerse durante el día y la noche, y brindarse momentos de amor y entrega mutua. Celebre a su madre, se lo merece. No son necesarios los regalos materiales y menos aún los costosos. Un abrazo, una comida juntos o una simple llamada telefónica serán suficientes. Ella y usted guardarán el momento en sus corazones. Por otro lado, en esta edición abordamos dos temas que atañen a nuestras sociedades, como el maltrato a los caballos, que, felizmente, tienen acérrimos defensores que nos invitan a unirnos a su causa. La expansión del uso de la bicicleta en urbes dinámicas y de tráfico conflictivo es otro asunto que deberíamos de empezar a imitar por salud propia y para bien de nuestras ciudades. En el sector de viajes y turismo, le sugerimos disfrutar de los parques y resorts de Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Si la ciudad por sí misma ya es un jardín, estamos seguros de que centros pensados para el turismo lo cautivarán en sus próximas vacaciones. ¡Bienvenido a bordo! May is a special month in Paraguay, Peru, Chile, Uruguay and Bolivia because it is when we celebrate mothers and other female role models in our lives. Amaszonas magazine is commemorating them in a different way: with an educational campaign about breastfeeding. We know that breastfeeding not only provides nutrients, but it also provides children with love, life and a strong bond. This connection made between mother and child is wonderful. Breastfeeding provides a singular emotional experience both for the mother and son: makes them both be closer to each other, get to know during the day and night, and provide moments of love and mutual surrender. Celebrate your mother, she deserves it. Material gifts and even less the expensive are not necessary. A hug, a meal together or a simple phone call will be sufficient. She and you saved the moment in their hearts. On the other hand, in this edition we tackle two issues concerning our societies, like the mistreatment of horses, which, fortunately, have staunch defenders who invite us to join their cause. The expansion of the use of the bicycle in dynamic cities and conflicting traffic is another matter that we should begin to imitate by own health and for the good of our cities. In the travel and tourism industry, we suggest you enjoy the parks and resorts of Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Amaszonas celebrates mothers in Paraguay, Peru, Chile, Uruguay and Bolivia with messages that encourage breastfeeding; an act of love and responsibility that gives life and health.
En mayo, cinco países de la región homenajean a las reinas del hogar. Bolivia lo hace conmemorando a las mujeres cochabambinas que defendieron su terruño durante la Guerra de la Independencia, el 27 de mayo de 1812. La revista Amaszonas quiso celebrar a las madres de Paraguay, Perú, Chile, Uruguay y Bolivia con un mensaje de concienciación sobre la importancia de este acto de amor y responsabilidad materna. La Organización Mundial de la Salud y Unicef recomiendan el inicio de la lactancia en la primera hora de vida del niño. La leche materna es prácticamente un alimento mágico para el bebé, especialmente en los primeros seis meses de vida. Durante ese tiempo, dar el pecho se convierte en la mejor manera de cuidar su salud y desarrollo. Prácticamente todas las mujeres pueden amamantar, siempre que dispongan de buena información y del apoyo de su familia. A continuación, siete madres bolivianas indican por qué amamantar es dar lo mejor de ti. 10

In May, five countries in the region pay homage to the queens of the home. Bolivia does on the day that commemorates the women of Cochabamba who defended their land during the War of Independence, on May 27, 1812. Amaszonas Magazine wants to celebrate the mothers of Paraguay, Peru, Chile, Uruguay and Bolivia with an educational message about the importance of this act of motherly love and responsibility. The World Health Organization and Unicef recommend beginning breastfeeding during the first hour of life. Breast milk is practically magical for the baby, especially during the first six months of life. During this time, breastfeeding is the best way to care for the health and development of a baby. Almost all new mothers can breastfeed, given they are provided with good information and the support of their families. Below, seven Bolivian mothers share why breastfeeding is a way to give the best of themselves.

Por las noches los paseos son una delicia gracias a la hierba perfumada, la brisa húmeda lograda por las piscinas y el cielo plagado de estrellas. Abierto todo el año, este espacio ubicado en las cercanías del pintoresco pueblo de Porongo, brinda la posibilidad de pasar jornadas o fines de semana de increíble relajación. Sus restaurantes Las Palmas y Santa Rita satisfacen los más refinados paladares con platillos típicos e internacionales que los chefs alternan periódicamente. Tres salones con capacidades para 200, 70 y 25 personas están disponibles para eventos corporativos con los equipos de multimedia que se requieran y para la celebración de cumpleaños, aniversarios nupciales, baby showers y bodas. ABSOLUTE COMFORT During the day, all the areas of Güembé are open to the light and the luxury of nature fills them, giving the guest the impression that he or she is on a solitary and exclusive island, where nothing is contaminated and all is organized around him/ her. At night, the walkways are delicious, thanks to the scents of herbs, the fresh breeze blowing off the lagoons, and the sky covered in stars. Open year-round, this space is located on the outskirts of the picturesque town of Porongo, which offers the possibility to spend a single day or just a weekend filled with incredible relaxation. The restaurants of Las Palmas and Santa Rita satisfy the most refined palates offering local and international dishes that are periodically changed by the chefs. There are three rooms with capacity for 200, 70 or 25 people and they are available for corporate events (as they have the required multimedia equipment), and for celebrations such as for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, baby showers and others. Ninguno de los animales que alberga fue capturado para estar allí; están en custodia tras ser recuperados de situaciones de maltrato, tráfico y abandono. Al haber sido mascotas no son aptos para vivir en libertad, por lo que están bajo el cuidado de biólogos, veterinarios y botánicos. En entretenidas caminatas, los visitantes pueden conocer tortugas, capibaras, ñandúes, urinas, iguanas, monos y pavos reales, y descubrir el fascinante mundo de las mariposas (Güembé ha logrado reproducir 52 especies nativas de la zona), abejas, hormigas, termitas y hasta tarántulas. Los guías explicarán la importancia ecológica de las especies. Con todo esto, tienes asegurada una vacación diferente, con educación incluida, la próxima vez que visites Santa Cruz. El Biocentro Güembé (que en guaraní significa bejuco o planta) es un auténtico paraíso al alcance de todos... y encanta vivirlo.

SO MUCH TO SEE Respect for nature is the biggest part of Güembé. None of the animals that live here were captured. Instead they live here because they have been saved from situations involving abuse, trafficking or abandonment. As they were once pets, they are no longer apt to live in the wild, and thus are under the care of biologists, veterinarians and botanists. During entertaining strolls, visitors meet up with turtles, capybaras, rheas, iguanas, monkeys, and peacocks, and discover the fascinating world of butterflies (Güembé has achieved reproduction of 52 native species), bees, ants, termites and even tarantulas. The guides explain the ecological importance of these species and their function in the ecosystem. So, the next time you visit Santa Cruz you can be assured of a different type of vacation, one with education included. The Güembé Biocenter (which in the Guarani language means reed or plant), is an authentic paradise within everyone’s reach… and it is a joy to experience.

Junto a peces de colores, en su laguna convive la victoria amazónica, un nenúfar originario del Amazonas, descubierto en Bolivia en 1801. En febrero de 2012, el libro de récords Guinness registró sus gigantescas hojas de 3,20 m de diámetro como las más grandes del mundo. La página web de este parque-restaurante tiene un tentador reto: “Si ama la naturaleza, el aire puro y la buena comida, visite este sorprendente oasis de belleza y buen gusto”. ¿Te parece una exageración? Te aseguramos que no. La Rinconada está ubicada en la ribera oeste del río Piraí, a 11 km del centro de Santa Cruz de la Sierra. The Rinconada has an enormous attraction that has given it world fame. Together with colorful fish, in the lagoon you will also find the victoria amazónica, a water lily species discovered in Bolivia in 1801. In February of 2012, the Guinness Book of World Records recorded the giant leaves of this plant at 3.2 meters in diameter, as the biggest in the world. Noel Kempff Mercado, el más notable naturista boliviano, también creador del Jardín Botánico y del plan de arborización de Santa Cruz de la Sierra, cumplió su sueño de abrir un espacio dedicado a destacar la biodiversidad de la región el 19 de agosto de 1979. El Zoológico Municipal Fauna Sudamericana cuenta en la actualidad con más de 200 especies y 2.000 animales en cautiverio. Su gran fuerte son las aves, de las que hay más de 120. Es un lugar, que como su fundador proclamó, “fomenta la educación, la recreación y la investigación”.

Noel Kempff Mercado, the most notable Bolivian naturalist, is the creator of the Botanical Garden and the plan for tree planning in Santa Cruz. On August 19, 1979, he fulfilled a dream when he opened an area dedicated to showing off the biodiversity of the region. The Municipal Zoo of South American Fauna currently has more than 200 species and 2,000 animals in captivity. Its strength is the birds, of which there are more than 120. It is a place, as declared by the founder, “that foments education, recreation and investigation”. 32

Desde 2010, el zoológico está en una etapa de transición para convertirse en un centro de investigación y por ello ya inauguró hace dos años su clínica veterinaria. Además, es el único parque de su tipo especializado en fauna sudamericana de todo el subcontinente. Los fines de semana llega a tener hasta 10.000 visitantes, logrando superar el medio millón de entradas al año. Los jaguares, la isla de los monos, el tatú grande, su colección de víboras y serpientes, su observatorio de aves amazónicas, el acuario, su hábitat de lagartos y tortugas, la montaña de los cóndores y los osos perezosos y jochis sueltos, además de su renovado patio de comidas, sus parques y áreas verdes, son las principales razones para no dejar de visitar este clásico de la urbe cruceña. In 2010, the zoo began a transitional phase to convert itself into a center of investigation and therefore two years ago it inaugurated a veterinary clinic. Additionally, it is the only park of its type in the whole subcontinent specialized in the fauna of South America. On weekends, up to 10,000 visitors arrive, thus reaching over half of million tickets per year. The jaguars, the island of the monkeys, and the native armadillo, the collection of snakes, the observatory of birds of the Amazonas, the aquarium, a habitat for lizards and turtles, the mountain of the condors, and the uncaged sloths and hochis, plus a renovated food court, the parks and green areas -- these are the main reasons not to miss visiting this classic in Santa Cruz.

estudio y deleite Botanical Garden, Study and delight El Jardín Botánico de Santa Cruz de la Sierra se encuentra a ocho kilómetros de la ciudad (camino a Cotoca). Es un lugar dedicado al análisis, conservación, crianza y exhibición de la flora de todo el país, con énfasis en las plantas del oriente boliviano. Sus orquídeas y su colección de más de 37 tipos de palmeras (la más completa del país) son sus grandes orgullos, junto con su jardín de cactus, una laguna, un mirador y un vivero. Son 186 hectáreas divididas en dos partes: una de jardines y de esparcimiento y otra de vegetación autóctona al natural.
The Botanical Garden of Santa Cruz is located eight kilometers outside the city (on the road to Cotoca). It is a place dedicated to the analysis, conservation, breeding, and exhibition of the flora of the entire country, with emphasis on plants of eastern Bolivia. The orchids and collection of more than 37 types of palms (the most complete in the country) are a source of great pride, as are the cactus garden, lake, vantage point and nursery. Se ofrecen visitas guiadas y se llevan a cabo paseos escolares, prácticas universitarias y estudios de tesis e investigación con museos y otros organismos. Cuenta con una mancha de bosque subtropical, caracterizado por un gran verdor, árboles frondosos con plantas trepadoras y muchas aves. También tiene una parte de bosque chaqueño, mucho más seco, espinoso y con vegetación típica de pradera y pantano estacional. En la laguna se crían peces y alrededor se pueden observar lagartos y tortugas. Un lugar ideal para que los más jóvenes aprendan sobre la importancia de la conservación y el respeto de las especies autóctonas y, a la vez, disfrutar en familia de actividades al aire.

The last few years have brought huge changes to the world’s gastronomy. Restaurants fill their menus with innovative offerings created to seduce people and chefs work hard to uncover culinary secrets and to deepen the sensory experiences of mankind. This is the premise for Jardín de Asia, reinvented in 2013 by the hand of Chilean Chef, Jaime Barbas. The restaurant, that began in Santa Cruz in 2008 and that has a franchise in La Paz, is proud of its Asian kitchen that is influenced by the Amazon and the Andes, thus giving value to the products of the Bolivian Andes and jungle. In a paragraph on its webpage, guests are given a summary of what they will find in the dishes: “Each recipe is developed through investigation, interchanging experiences, discovering techni-

Es un equipo de cocineros y clientes-amigos del restaurante que son invitados a viajar en busca de ingredientes autóctonos. “Además, nos acercamos al proveedor de productos que ya utilizamos y aprendemos de ellos sus técnicas culinarias”, indica Jaime Barbas, que en el campo enfrenta a los mosquitos en su afán por saber de donde proviene lo que sazona en su cocina. DESCUBRIENDO SABORES Desde hace 60 años, los colonos de San Juan de Yapacaní (al norte de Santa Cruz) se alimentan de las almejas de las lagunas de la zona. Its team is made up of cooks and clientfriends of the restaurant who are invited to travel in search of native ingredients. “Moreover, we reach out to the local producers of items we already use and we learn culinary techniques from them”, says Jaime Barbas, who confronts the mosquitoes in order to learn more about where the items he seasons in his kitchen came from. DISCOVERING FLAVORS For 60 years, the settlers of San Juan de Yapacani (northern Santa Cruz) have eaten the clams found in the lagoons of the region. When this information reached the ears of Jaime Barbas, he thought that this shellfish might end up on the menu of Jardín de Asia, and that it would be enjoyed by more people if they knew where it came from:

Sin esta bebida hubiese sido difícil preparar el batayaki de mariscos salteados con el que se embelesan los asiduos al restaurante. APRENDER Y ENSEÑAR Jorge Calvo Rojas, director de Alimentos y Bebidas de Jardín de Asia, forma parte de Laboratorio 360º y se entusiasma contando que el proyecto, por otro lado, está educando a los proveedores. “Antes el pescado llegaba en bolsas plásticas comunes; ahora la gente lo empaca al vacío en paquetes especiales”, dice. “Ya empezaremos a visitar poblaciones y comunidades para instruir a personas que con puestos de comidas y restaurantes viven del turismo”. Jaime Barbas enfatiza: “Nos interesa aprender y también enseñar, sin ningún afán de lucro de por medio”. 56

The same thing happened, again in San Juan de Yapacani, with fish like the paiche, boga, pacú, pilapia, which although well known in Bolivia, are not used to create international or gourmet dishes. The 360º Laboratory also “discovered” for the recipes of Jardín de Asia the singani moscato (alcoholic beverage), which is made by traditional methods in Santiago del Valle, located close to Samaipata (western Santa Cruz). Without this beverage, it would have been difficult to prepare the sautéed seafood batayaki, which has captivated regulars of the restaurant. LEARNING AND TEACHING Jorge Calvo Rojas, the Food and Beverage Director of Jardín de Asia forms part of the 360º Laboratory and is enthusiastic when talking about the project which also includes educating the providers. “Before, the fish arrived in ordinary plastic bags: now people use special bags”, he says. “We have started visiting populations and communities to give instruction to people who have food stands or restaurants that make their living serving tourists”. Jaime Barbas emphasizes, “we are interested in learning and also in teaching, without any intention to make money off of it”.

Pero la imagen de pintoresca pasó a ser cruel. El tiempo cambió bueyes por caballos, los que circulan por la ciudad con los cascos de sus patas heridos por el asfalto y con los lomos desgarrados por el peso que llevan a cuestas a punta de latigazos. Animales agobiados por el calor, la desnutrición, las enfermedades y la impaciencia de conductores de vehículos que arremeten contra la parsimoniosa carreta que jalan. In consequence, that person also does not respect the rights of his animals. It has to do with the administration of the city and cultural topics because these carts pick up garbage which is the job of the garbage service or which citizens have improperly disposed of,” explain the volunteers who have asked not to be identified. Todos ellos jóvenes anónimos que luchan contra enemigos tan fuertes como la burocracia, la indiferencia y la falta de compromiso, pero que, incluso en momentos adversos, siempre vencen porque su lucha es por la vida y la vida, siempre prevalece.

La hostigaron tanto que se vio obligada a renunciar. En nuestra región, la lucha de belleza contra racismo también se ha dado. En 2001, Vanessa Mendoza fue la primera afrodescendiente en ostentar el título de Señorita Colombia. Pese a comentarios racistas en el inicio de su reinado, ella se ganó el cariño y respeto de los colombianos que la apodaron “Barbie Negra”. Ahora piensa que desde su elección “hay más diversidad en la televisión y en las pasarelas”. Un verdadero triunfo de la razón. Era 2001 y la “Biblia de la moda” inauguraba el nuevo siglo con la mirada puesta en el vestuario de las mujeres indígenas de Perú. Cuatro años después no solo la Vogue de España mostraba tradiciones ancestrales, el inmenso talento creativo y la belleza incomparable de los textiles andinos, las páginas de esta publicación en varios idiomas se llenaron de color con la colección de alta costura de John Galliano, para la casa Dior. Recientemente le tocó el turno a los textiles bolivianos, conocidos como aguayos, estar en la mira de los “fashionistas” internacionales. El cantante, compositor y productor estadounidense Pharrell Williams se inspiró en ellos para diseñar una línea de zapatillas deportivas en colaboración con la reconocida marca Adidas. Lo que para muchos sería un complicado rompecabezas, para los amantes de este deporte el armado de sus aeroplanos termina siendo una simpleza absoluta. Felipe Talavera considera que para considerarse un auténtico aeromodelista la persona debe articular personalmente su artefacto. “Volarlos es lo de menos”, dice. Alfred Romero, from Cochabamba, is a retired engineer, who now dedicates himself to making furniture and… airplanes! Yes, scale model airplanes. He makes them based on orders he receives and he has his own, a Cessna 152. It appears so real that even the seatbelts and seats are of leather. Hundreds of pinheads make the rivets on the wings. MAKING “LITTLE JEWELS” For seven years, Gary Ibatta has been making model airplanes. “It’s something that fills me with satisfaction”, he says. From La Paz, and a chemical engineer by profession, he says that the best part is putting together the helicopters that he orders from the USA. What for many would be a complicated puzzle, for the lovers of this sport, putting model planes together ends up being completely simple. Felipe Talavera thinks that in order to consider oneself an authentic airplane modeler the person must personally put together his model plane. “Flying them is the least of it”, he says. (Santa Cruz de la Sierra, 15 de abril de 2015) El rostro de la hermana Angélica devela la emoción que siente al volver a pisar las instalaciones del antiguo colegio Santa Ana. “Eran solo aulas”, repite dos veces, mientras sale “maravillada” del trabajo que hicieron los 42 profesionales que transformaron el inmueble construido en la década de los 50 y que este año se llama Casa Cor Bolivia 2015. Los arquitectos, diseñadores, decoradores y paisajistas que asumieron el reto de “revivir al Santa Ana” trabajaron en 32 espacios distribuidos a lo largo de más de 2.000 metros cuadrados. Allí se han creado desde lofts, baños, dormitorios,
hasta el comedor de la superiora, una piscina y una cava secreta. El reto no fue fácil, los trabajos de restauración y puesta en valor de este inmueble empezaron en octubre del año pasado y demandaron una inversión aproximada de $us 2 millones, monto que contempla el esfuerzo realizado no solo por Casa Cor, sino también por los profesionales y por los más de 20 patrocinadores que aceptaron este desafío de imponer tendencia, nuevos materiales y propuestas que invitan al “buen vivir”. “Son ambientes más grandes e integrales. Al entrar a Casa Cor queremos que la gente sienta que es como visitar una casa”, dijo Quito Velasco,

Como dice el director del Centro y Patrimonio Histórico de Santa Cruz, Jery Dino Méndez, “el concepto de Casa Cor no solo es restaurar, sino también rehabilitar los espacios. Le cambia el uso al inmueble, pero mantiene la estructura patrimonial; entonces, se garantiza años de vida a la edificación, se potencia la recuperación de los elementos más significativos y, sobre todo, se convierte en un patrimonio vivo”. VALOR ARQUITECTÓNICO La obra de Pablo Nuyttens construida en los 50 sobre la calle Ingavi esquina Velasco es de un gran valor arquitectónico. La congregación Hijas de Santa Ana lo contrató para ampliar 12 aulas para el nivel secundario con sus respectivas áreas complementarias. Así, Nuyttens marcó un cambio en la arquitectura cruceña, que significó el paso del barro al hormigón armado. “Este sector del excolegio Santa Ana se ha convertido en un ejemplo clave de la modernidad arquitectónica cruceña, porque ha significado la incorporación a las ideas de progreso tecnológico de la segunda revolución industrial, con nuevas formas y materiales inéditos relacionados con el expresionismo funcional de la época, integrando la ciencia y el arte, en el marco del respeto las condiciones ambientales locales”, explicó el arquitecto Virgilio Suárez, coordinador de Extensión Facultad de Arquitectura, Diseño y Urbanismo de la Universidad Privada de Santa Cruz de la Sierra (UPSA).

Prepare your children so that the flight is a good experience for them and a pleasure for you. Usualmente volar es una aventura para los niños pequeños y es poco frecuente que sientan miedo. Si tu hijo lo hará por primera vez es buena idea contarle lo que sucederá apenas lleguen al aeropuerto, como el paso por los controles de seguridad que suele poner a los chicos algo nerviosos. En lo posible, ya en el avión, es mejor mantener al niño en el asiento con el cinturón de seguridad abrochado, incluso si está dormido. En algún momento del vuelo puede ponerse inquieto. Tenderá a llorar, a querer pararse, a patear el asiento delantero… Ponle límites del mismo modo que lo harías en tu casa. Lo que más irrita a los pasajeros no es un niño inquieto, sino ver que sus padres no hacen nada por calmarlo. Es recomendable llevar alguna clase de snack (galletitas, cereales, etc.) para entretenerlo o para evitar rabietas cuando tenga hambre. Su juguete favorito, si no es demasiado voluminoso, puede ser otra alternativa para tenerlo calmado durante el viaje. El Club de Golf La Vitoria, con el apoyo de la Municipalidad y el Gobierno de la Provincia de Salta, organizó la Copa Integración Amaszonas Tarija-Salta. Al encuentro deportivo que reunió a un centenar de amigos golfistas tarijeños y de otras ciudades bolivianas, se unieron los llegados de Argentina, que, al final, quedaron encantados con el buen trato recibido. La premiación estuvo enmarcada en un almuerzo servido en el mismo club. Hubo chancho al palo y otras exquisiteces de la cocina tarijeña. Se premió a los ganadores de las diferentes categorías con plaquetas y trofeos. Amaszonas obsequió boletos en todas sus rutas. 96

The Vitoria Golf Club, with support from the city and provincial governments of Salta, organized a tournament called the Integration Cup, Amaszonas, Tarija-Salta. This sporting event brought together a hundred golf players from Tarija and other cities in Bolivia, who met up with their counterparts from Argentina, who, were charmed by the wonderful experience and treatment they received. The prize ceremony involved a luncheon served at the Club. The menu included pork and other excellent dishes from Tarija. The winners in different categories were awarded plaques and trophies. Amaszonas gave away tickets.
