Final Report The President‚s

After more than four decades with my Revesby Workers’ Club family, the time has come to write my final report for The Journal as President.

My journey with the Club commenced in November 1974 when I was employed as a casual barman and tray steward, which made my attendance at university possible. I remember my first shift, assigned to the now named Whitlam Theatre, serving in the lefthand side bar.

During my employment, I officially joined the Club on the 30 June 1976. Eight hundred people, like myself, were in the theatre being inducted as members.

In June 1978 I ceased my employment at the Club to commence my work in law as a solicitor in the Office of the New South Wales Public Solicitor (later known as Legal Aid Commission), 1978-1987, and as a Barrister (Public Defender), from 1987 to 1990.

In September 1980 I was elected to the Board. During my early years, under the guidance of then President Bill Bullard, a passionate advocate for supporting the local community that is still part of the Club's fibre today. I have vivid memories of attending the Club’s community picnic at Warwick Farm on the 26 October 1980 when I was tasked with giving out free ice cream. By 1987 I was dressed in full costume as ‘Wally the Worker’ a character mascot for the Club that was introduced to entertain children.

In 1982 my fellow Directors voted me into the position of Vice President, and in this same year, the Club celebrated the appointment of its first female Director, Norma Smith, who would in 1995 become the first female President in a large NSW Club. This was hardly surprising given the Club’s policy for the equality of women members from its very inception, which still rings true today.

The Club was also known for hosting quality entertainment. I recall artists like Honorary Member Little Pattie, Johnny O’Keefe, Col Joye, Sandy

Scott, Tina Turner, Jean Pitney, Chuck Berry, Vera Lynn, Julian Jorg, and Tom Jones who

Past President Norma Smith OAM.

performed 12 shows in October 1983 – there were two shows a day across 6 days, with buses coming from as far away as Adelaide to see him.

Over the years the Club went from strength to strength, with the continual growth of its membership, a reflection of the changing community, and recognition of our operational excellence, winning numerous industry awards that included Clubs NSW Awards for Excellence in Restaurant Dining, Community Service, and Entertainment, to name a few.

Fellow Director Pat Rogan assumed the seat of President in 2008, following Norma’s retirement. His leadership and vision laid the foundation for an expansion and diversification plan for the Club.

The Board and Management's commitment and understanding had long been the driving force behind the continual growth of the Club, aware of the strong foundation laid before us, the significance of portraying and preserving the Club’s history to its members while continuing to live and breathe our core values.

of the Club’s history. The Brett Street eastern foyer was revamped and a History Corridor linking the western and eastern foyers was created showcasing a timeline display along the corridor wall.

The History Corridor itself was designed to bring to life the story of the Club from its very beginning in September 1962 when the only “drinking hole” for locals was the Revesby Pacific Hotel, a stone’s throw down the road from where the Club stands.

With every Club renovation, the preservation of our history was an important inclusion. The centrally located café, bar, and lounge were rebranded Café 240 and Bar 240 in recognition of the 240 original members, known as the ‘Foundation Members,’ of which fourteen were women, all with equal rights.

Rogues Sports Bar, which opened in late 2021, was reinvigorated but maintained its historic integrity with half the venue dedicated to the original snooker tables and darts and the other for local sports fan viewing. The name was inspired by the framed Rogues Gallery illustrations that hung in the original Sports Bar, a nod to the rogue well-known personalities of the original Sports Bar.

With the preservation of our history in mind, 2015 saw a new feature assembled in proud commemoration

Daryl’s contribution to the Club over the past 40 years has undoubtedly shaped it into the progressive community-based organisation that it is today. Never in our history will we be privileged to see one person so dedicated to its community Club.

Final Report cont.

The most recently completed renovation is the Function Centre and Whitlam Theatre. Each function room has been named after a significant Labor seat, with the Whitlam Theatre retaining its name in recognition of senior Labor figure the Hon. (Edward) Gough Whitlam AC QC. An Honorary Club Member since July 1996, Gough Whitlam has long been a friend of the Club, officially opening the ‘Big Club’ in August 1973, and later Club renovations in 1993, 1996 and 2000.

The important role our Club plays in the community was evident to me early on and still is today. The Club’s involvement with schools and education began in 1986, and in 1998 The School Subsidy Program was formally established as an annual commitment that has provided more than $2.2m to local schools. Our Tertiary Scholarships Program has supported more than 650 students to complete their studies over the past 25 years with funding now totalling over $300,000.

The Club's commitment to education goes beyond school curriculums demonstrated by its commitment in 2018 to invest $60,000 annually into Whitlam Institutes’ Civic Education Program for the ‘What Matters?’ Writing Competition. The competition, rooted in Gough Whitlam’s vision of empowering young Australians, invites students from years 5 to 12 to respond to the question, by sharing their perspectives on issues that are important to them.

The health and well-being of our Club community was also unwavering. Since 2018 and in memory of Club President Pat Rogan who passed in 2015, the Club has donated annually $45,000 to the Asbestos and Dust Diseases Research Institute (ADDRI) in support of groundbreaking research to improve early diagnosis and treatment of mesothelioma, a deadly cancer linked to asbestos exposure.

The need for a women’s shelter in Revesby became evident in 2018, when the State Government confirmed the area's need for crisis support due to an increase in domestic and sexual assaults within the Canterbury Bankstown LGA. The Club stepped in and provided a property for the shelter, and after essential building works were completed, Biyani House – Revesby Women’s Shelter opened its doors in 2021. Within the first 12 months it had accommodated 127 women and children, and provided 6,108 safe bed nights.

At the heart of our Club lies a vibrant staff community, each member embodying the values of adaptability, teamwork, support, and strength. These values are not just words on a wall but the guiding principles that shape our daily interactions and drive our collective success.

In early 2020 our Club and staff community were faced with something it had never foreseen; multiple forced closures due to COVID-19. During this time, we realigned our focus, developed new strategies, and reinforced the above-mentioned values, which saw our staff receive $2m in payments and the rollout of a separate Hardship Provision for those who were in extra need, which totalled $500k, a decision made without hesitation by the Board and its management to ensure the well-being of our staff.

Hon. Gough Whitlam AC QC.
John Rodwell, Patrick “Pat” Rogan OAM and Christine Butters.

In closing, those today and of the past are recognised on glass panels, proudly positioned outside the Club’s Boardroom. This includes all the Directors, CEO’s, Patrons and Life members of the Club. Their location stands as a reminder to the current Board when making decisions on the future of our Club that we should always remain True to our Traditions.

To my fellow Directors, past and present, who have provided unwavering support and commitment over the years, to Club CEO Scott Bennetts, his management team, and all our staff for continually delivering operational excellence every day to our members and community, and to our members who without you this great Club wouldn’t exist.

Daryl's Revesby Workers’ Club Timeline

David Raper

Nearing the end of my second year as a Director of Revesby Workers’ Club, it continues to be a privilege to work with the Board to serve our members and staff. It is often challenging, but such a positive experience is made easier by a combination of a great leadership team under our CEO Scott Bennetts, and all the fantastic staff that make up our Club.

Like many, with the completion of the Function Centre renovations including the Whitlam Theatre, I greatly anticipate seeing members and visitors enjoying the beautiful new facilities. This was a major project expertly and professionally delivered by our management team. In general, I can see many exciting events planned across the Club over the coming months through the upcoming holiday season.

From a Board perspective, I will continue to collaborate with fellow board members to focus on several priorities. These priorities include supporting our CEO and his team, sustaining our club as a leader in the industry, and making the best decisions in the interest of the Club’s future. This also extends to the value and priority we place on all Club employees in protecting our positive culture. Given my long history as part of Revesby Workers’ before joining the Board, I also have a deep appreciation of the relationships with all our wonderful sub-clubs and the benefits these can have in building life-long associations.

At the time of writing, of course, we face the stepping down of our President Daryl Melham, the heart and soul of the Club for such a long time. To say he will be missed is of course a huge understatement. There will be much more to be said as we celebrate his time of service, and I’m sure his involvement and support for the Club will continue.

the unification of the Men’s and Ladies Clubs. The volunteer committee members work tirelessly to run regular events throughout the year out of Revesby Greens at Spence Street.

‘Twilight Bowls’ is one such social event that commences with Daylight Saving, so if you would like to get involved you would be welcomed with open arms. The Ladies Indoor Bowls are undoubtedly looking forward to resuming play in the new Whitlam Theatre. Billiards and Snooker are looking forward to hosting the Shire Singles event. Darts had a new Club Champion christened in John Savage, and are heading towards the Doubles Championships, and the Spearfishing Club continues to proudly fly the club colours – check them out on social media if you are interested.

Finally, I look forward to being a part of a Club that continues to provide significant financial help across our community. I also hope and trust that we all will have a safe and happy Christmas and holiday season.

Welcome to the last journal of the year and an update as to what’s on offer at the Club this holiday season.

Our new Function Centre and renovated Whitlam Theatre, located on Level 1 of the Club, were formally opened in late October with an event that officially recognised and honoured the long-term service of the Club’s immediate past president Daryl Melham AM. We thank him for his service to our Club, the industry in general, and to our community.

Daryl’s guidance has been instrumental in developing a club whose major focus is providing for its members and community.

With our community in mind, Revesby Workers’ Club has been committed to investing in education for many years, an incentive I am passionate about from my background in both education and community service. Our Tertiary Scholarship program has been running for 27 years and has provided financial support to over 670 students in achieving their academic goals. As Chair of the Education Committee, I congratulate all HSC students on completing their studies and encourage them to apply for our scholarship program. Applications can be submitted through our website.

Another longstanding initiative is our School Subsidy program, which began in 1986 as an annual contribution of $11,000 to 22 local schools and has since expanded to offer support to 32 local schools. Last year, the Club contributed over $65,000 in crucial funding through this program, enabling schools to enhance their facilities, introduce new programs, and provide additional resources. This ongoing program directly improves the quality of education and

The Board of Directors

opportunities available to students in our community year after year.

As we head into the next few months the club will be offering a great range of festive activities and services from Photos with Santa, Kids Toy Raffles, Ham and Pork Raffles, our annual Worker’s Giving Tree and Health Mates Food Drive supporting Padstow Community Care as well as Christmas Day lunches for family celebrations.

The lineup of 2025 events and activities can also be found in this issue of the Journal, from Australia Day, Valentine’s Day and International Women’s Day, all designed to bring our club community together.

I would like to wish all our members and staff a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Please take care throughout the holiday season.

Community Our Club

EMPOWERING OUR COMMUNITY: CLUBGRANTS 2024

The ClubGRANTS program, a collaboration between local clubs and the NSW government, plays an essential role in community development by providing muchneeded funding for projects that directly benefit the local population. This year, the Canterbury-Bankstown ClubGRANTS Committee received an overwhelming 301 grant applications, with requests totalling more than $7 million from community groups in need of support. After a rigorous evaluation process, 97 deserving projects were selected for support, resulting in a collective investment of over $2.5 million from 12 clubs throughout the Local Government Area (LGA).

Revesby Workers’ Club took pride in contributing to 15 of these community projects, focusing on a diverse range of sectors that meet the needs of vulnerable groups and enhance community well-being. The funded initiatives span across vital areas such as, Community Welfare and Social Services, Family Support, Community Health Services and Health Promotion Initiatives, Community Education and Development, Aged, Disability, and Youth Services.

These contributions align with Revesby Workers’ Club’s core mission to give back to the community in meaningful ways. The Club continues to be a strong advocate for communitydriven projects and remains committed to making a difference in the lives of Canterbury-Bankstown residents through, sustainable investment in local initiatives to build a healthier, more inclusive, and supportive community.

SCHOOL SUBSIDY SUCCESS

STORIES: MENAI PUBLIC

One of the standout success stories from our School Subsidy Program is Menai Public School, which received funding to purchase two Main Learning Displays for its K-2 classrooms. Given the diverse needs of their students, schools like Menai often face tough choices between investing in essential technology and allocating resources toward wellbeing programs. This funding provided a solution, allowing the school to enhance the learning experience without compromising student support services.

The interactive learning displays have transformed classroom engagement, equipping teachers with powerful tools to deliver high-quality educational programs. Each setup includes an interactive panel, a mini PC, a webcam, and a wireless keyboard and mouse, offering a comprehensive, user-friendly solution for both educators and students.

With the large screens and integrated speakers, teachers can present a wide range of digital learning materials, use digital inking tools to annotate directly on the screen, and connect seamlessly to cloud-based applications.

This technology enables students to interact with their lessons in dynamic new ways, fostering greater engagement and supporting diverse learning styles. By bridging the gap between traditional teaching methods and modern technology, Menai Public School has been able to create a more immersive and interactive learning environment, significantly enriching the educational experience for its young students.

Over the past year, the Revesby Workers’ School Subsidy Program committed $65,580 to various initiatives aimed at enhancing student outcomes.

A NEW BEGINNING: REVESBY COMMUNITY OP SHOP REOPENS WITH LOCAL SUPPORT

In June 2024, the BEHHA Op Shop in Revesby closed its doors, leaving a significant gap in the community. However, thanks to the dedication of 18 original volunteers, the support of the local community, and funding from Revesby Workers' Club, the space is now being revitalised under a new name—Revesby Community Op Shop (RECOS).

One of the dedicated volunteers, Judy Camac, reflected on the challenges they’ve encountered while preparing for the reopening, particularly in sourcing new stock and equipment after the original closure left the space empty. Low-cost community shops like RECOS play a vital role in supporting those facing financial hardship, offering affordable goods and providing a sense of community.

RECOS is determined not only to meet the needs of those struggling but also to contribute to the broader community. Once operational, the shop plans to become self-sufficient, using its revenue to continue assisting local groups like Biyani House – Revesby Women’s Shelter and providing essential services to residents in need. With the support of volunteers and the community, RECOS is set to be a cornerstone for local support and outreach.

“We want to keep providing an inclusive, welcoming space for everyone, especially for those doing it tough,” Judy added. “If anyone has donations, please hold onto them until we’re ready to start collecting ahead of our grand reopening.”

With the community and Revesby Workers' Club standing behind them, the Revesby Community Op Shop is ready for a new chapter in supporting residents and building a sense of belonging.

A LEGACY OF ART: BANKSTOWN ART SOCIETY 64TH ANNUAL EXHIBITION SUPPORTING LOCAL ARTISTS

Founded in 1958 by renowned artist and tutor Ronald Peters, the Bankstown Art Society stands as one of Sydney's oldest art societies. With over 200 members, the Society has played a pivotal role in building artistic expression and creativity within the community.

Its first exhibition took place in 1959, and since then, the Society has grown considerably, thanks to enduring support from Bankstown Council, local community groups, and local clubs including Revesby Workers' Club.

A major milestone in the Society’s history came in 2009 when the federal government announced a $3.15 million grant for a community infrastructure program including the construction of Bankstown Arts Centre, a state-of-theart facility designed to nurture local talent and serve as a cultural hub for the LGA.

Daryl Melham AM, a former president of Revesby Workers' Club expressed his support for the continued development of the Arts Centre, stating, “The centre is already a great place for people to meet, learn, perform and be inspired. This will make Bankstown Arts Centre even better.” In recent years Daryl Melham has been honoured with the position of Gallery Patron – and with the club, sponsored the contemporary submission category for the Society’s 64th Annual Exhibition.

The annual exhibition, a hallmark event for the Society, continues to attract attention from the broader Sydney community. With categories ranging from traditional to contemporary, the exhibition not only highlights the diversity of artistic talent within the Bankstown area but also reinforces the importance of ongoing community and institutional support for the arts.

Every year, National Early Childhood Educators' Day offers a moment to pause and reflect on the profound impact that early childhood educators have on the lives of young children. This day is not just a calendar event; it’s a heartfelt recognition of the educators who dedicate their lives to nurturing the development and well-being of our littlest learners.

On Wednesday 4 September, The Tree House community came together to celebrate these remarkable individuals who shape the foundation of education for many children. It was a day filled with appreciation, recognition, and a shared love for the mission of early childhood education.

To mark the occasion, The Tree House educators enjoyed a delightful morning tea while exchanging heartfelt messages of support and appreciation, acknowledging the hard work and unwavering commitment that define their roles.

“Today is about more than just celebration; it’s about connection,” shared one of the lead educators. “We all come together to support each other and recognise the importance of our work in fostering a love for learning in children. It's truly rewarding.”

S U P P O R T I N G E AC H O T H E R : C E L E B R AT I N G R U O K DAY

On Thursday 12 September, the staff came together to observe RUOK Day, an important initiative aimed at raising awareness for mental health and suicide prevention in

Australia. This day serves as a poignant reminder of the vital importance of connection and community, encouraging everyone to check in on those around them.

While our team continually supports one another in dayto-day operations, RUOK Day highlighted the significance of actively reaching out and ensuring that every staff member feels valued and supported. The initiative aligns perfectly with our ongoing commitment to fostering a culture where open communication about mental health is not just encouraged, but embraced.

“Our workplace is not just about achieving goals; it's also about creating a supportive environment where everyone feels safe to share their thoughts and feelings,” shared a member of our leadership team. “RUOK Day reinforces our mission to look out for each other, reminding us that sometimes, a simple conversation can make a world of difference.”

B L O O M I N G W I T H H O P E : DA F F O D I L DAY

On 22 August, our staff came together to proudly support the Cancer Council’s Daffodil Day, an initiative dedicated to raising crucial funds for life-saving cancer research and providing hope to those affected by this illness. This day not only highlights the importance of community involvement but also serves as a beacon of hope for individuals and families battling cancer.

Our remarkable Food and Beverage team went above and beyond in their efforts to contribute to this worthy cause. They crafted a delightful array of treats – pastries, cakes and snacks. In exchange for a simple gold coin donation, staff and visitors were treated to the mouthwatering selection, all while knowing that their contributions were directly supporting vital cancer research.

“We wanted to create an enjoyable experience while also making a real impact. Every bite mattered!”

The much-anticipated major renovation to the Club’s Function Rooms and Whitlam Theatre has been completed.

The project commenced in January this year and within weeks saw the old facades of a much-loved space torn back to its bare frame.

It had been over 20 years since the Whitlam Theatre had undergone such a dramatic transformation. The entire function area over the years has had only minor refurbishments, so these major works will ensure

the technology is current, the layout configurations maximise space and the Club can provide state-of-theart, modern, and flexible facilities for years to come.

The Melham Function Centre and Whitlam Theatre were officially opened on 27 October 2024 by our then Club President, Daryl Melham AM.

The function centre comprises three (3) purpose-built flexible event rooms that can easily function as one room due to the convenient operable walls, a prefunction space with a decorative dome skylight and well-appointed bar, and a versatile outdoor terrace providing soft natural lighting to its adjacent interiors or the perfect setting for an evening cocktail party.

The Whitlam Theatre is a fully equipped room, offering superior audio, visual and lighting capabilities. Featuring three (3) marble bars, theatre-style seating in its Gallery, three (3) well-appointed dressing rooms, and a stage, prime for live performances, with motorised extension.

• Gifts do not need to be wrapped. This helps identify which child your gift would most suit.

• We appreciate gifts for all ages, from babies to teenagers and through to adults.

• Rolls of paper are also a great option, so the recipients can wrap the gifts for Christmas day.

• Shopping Gift Cards are also a good option, if you are unsure what to get.

Gifts can be dropped off from Friday 8 November until Sunday 1 December 2024. We encourage you to all get involved and help us make someone’s Christmas just a little bit more special this year.

How to Stay on Track All Year

As the excitement of a new year sets in, many of us create ambitious resolutions, eager to make the most of a fresh start. However, as weeks go by, maintaining these goals can often feel like an uphill battle. Sticking to resolutions requires more than just good intentions; it calls for practical strategies and a commitment to steady progress. We’ve put together five essential tips to help you turn your New Year’s resolutions into lasting habits, ensuring that in 2025, your goals stick for the long haul.

01. Set Specific and Achievable Goals

Instead of vague resolutions like ‘get fit’ or ‘eat healthier’, make them specific. For example, ‘exercise 30 minutes a day, 3 times a week’ or ‘swap sugary drinks with water’. This makes it easier to track your progress and stay committed.

02. Break It Down into Small Steps

Large goals can feel overwhelming, so break them into smaller, manageable steps. Celebrate small wins along the way to stay motivated. If your resolution is to lose 15kg, start with small targets, such as 2kg per month.

03. Create a Plan and Set a Routine

Develop a structured plan that fits into your daily life. Consistency is key, so try to integrate new habits into an existing routine. For example, if you want to de-stress by adding meditation, allocate a specific time each day for it.

04. Stay Accountable

Share your resolution with your friends or family who can help keep you on track. Alternatively, join a support group or use apps to monitor your progress. Our group classes and app can certainly help you with this.

05. Be Patient and Forgiving

Change takes time and setbacks are natural. Don’t be discouraged if you stumble, just get back on track. Focus on your progress rather than perfection and keep moving forward even if things don’t go exactly as planned.

ATHLETICS (JUNIOR)

Liaison Director: Christine Butters

Our 45th season is currently underway, and it is our biggest yet, with 498 registered athletes, ranging in age from our 5-year-old Tiny Tots through to our 17-year-old senior athletes. This is our third season at our new grounds at Kelso Park North and we are proud to see our club going from strength to strength.

We have had a number of outstanding performances already this season, with some long-standing Centre records broken, including:

Grace Delander broke the 14 Girls 3000m record, which had previously stood for 13 years

Matilda Richards broke the 17 Girls 3000m record, which had previously stood for 15 years

Max Farrugia broke the 15 Boys 100m Hurdles record, which had previously stood for 28 years

This season we welcomed two new committee members Sara Brennan and Carmel Hanna. We have also had a changing of the guard, with Erin Austin taking on the role of President.

Four long standing members of our Centre were recently recognised for their outstanding service and commitment to the centre and were awarded life membership. Congratulations Erin Austin, Jackie Bottrill, Peter Bottrill and Tony Tahhan.

Our athletes have been busy competing at various carnivals and championship events, including regional and state school athletics championships, NSW All Schools championships and various gala days.

Our athletes are currently preparing for the Southern Metropolitan Zone Championships, being held in December and we wish them the best of luck in their events.

For any information or enquires please contact Erin on 0404 120 088

ATHLETICS (SENIOR)

Liaison Director: Christine Butters

Recently 2 of our junior athletes Archie Herb and Amelia Behringer were selected to represent NSW at the National cross-country

Championships held in Launceston, Tasmania on 31st August.

Archie and Amelia were selected based on their excellent performances over the cross-country season.

The conditions were like nothing else, heavy rain, extreme winds and the grass turned into mud which could be seen for kilometres.

Amelia ran an amazing race in very challenging conditions, finishing 27th overall and the 4th NSW athlete to cross the line just 4 seconds behind the 2nd NSW athlete.

Unfortunately, due to injury Archie was unable to compete.

Late September - early October Athletics NSW held the NSW All Schools Competition at Sydney Olympic Park. Illawong Revesby Workers Athletic had 22 athletes competing in a range of events in both track and field.

Of those 22 athletes we had 12 athletes’ medal. The medallists were:

Tamia 1st 13 years Javelin

Max 1st 14 years 100m Hurdles and 1st 14 years 200m Hurdles

Charlie 1st 15 years High Jump

Tallara 1st 15 years Javelin (Meet Record) and 1st 15 years Shot Put

Niamh 1st 16 years High Jump

Lowami 2nd 14 years Discus and 2nd 14 years Shot Put

Alex 2nd 19 years Shot Put

Bryon 3rd 12 years 80m Hurdles

Holly 3rd 15 years High Jump

Tallara 3rd 15 years Discus

Nova 3rd 16 years High Jump

Jasmine 3rd 17 years Discus.

Tallara Joseph-Riogi set a new Meet Record for the 15 years Javelin with a throw of 50.02.

Our summer season of athletics has just begun with some outstanding results at NSW All Schools with the 1st and 2nd placings automatically qualifying for the National All Schools Championships held in Brisbane in December this year. We can’t wait to see what all our members can achieve this season!

We will also hold our High Velocity Meets on 2nd November, January and February and a Throws Meet in December. Dates will be confirmed shortly!

BOWLS – LAWN (LADIES) Liaison Director: David Raper

So much has happened lately in our Club. Our Ladies Club has been amalgamated with the Men’s Club and we are united as Revesby Workers Bowling Club. This has been a long and effective process, but we are finally amalgamated as one. Dianne Oliver, now Vice President, Pat Tate, now Committee member and Ellie Atme, now Treasurer, are the women’s representatives on the combined Management Committee. They will work collaboratively with Geoff Went, now President, Peter Went, now Secretary and Ray Fitzpatrick, now Vice President, from the Men’s Club. This is a great achievement for both clubs.

The Women’s Club has been involved in Regional Pennants over the past weeks. Two teams were entered in Grade 4 pennants this year. Both the Maroon Team and the White Team have performed well in their games, representing the club with pride. Despite our efforts, the Pennants were won by St John’s Park and Ingleburn who will now play off to be Regional Grade 4 Pennants Champions.

We had a very successful Spring Triples Carnival this year. It was great to see so many Clubs participating in the day. Competitive bowls played in good spirit, a delicious lunch and raffles, 100 board, tombola and our stall made for a fun and enjoyable day.

A big thank you to the bar staff, Rob and Nick, who were a great support prior to and on the day.

We are currently preparing for our Club 5 years and under contest and we have encouraged all of our rookies to enter. This will take place on Thursday, 10 October.

Our next event is the Club Pairs championship, which will be played in late October.

Following amalgamation, our ladies are

able to enter the Club Triples, Club Open Minor pairs and the Open Veteran’s pairs. Good luck to all participants.

Our healing thoughts go out to Elizabeth MacFarland as she recovers from a very serious broken bone in her leg. Recover quickly, Liz, as we miss you.

We love to celebrate major birthdays. Congratulations to Phyllis Merrill who celebrated her 90th birthday and is still an active bowler. We also congratulate Betty Graham who recently chalked up 80 years. Betty has served as President of our Club on two occasions.

We are always pleased to welcome new members to our Club. Ladies are welcome to play on Thursday mornings as well as Wednesday and Saturday afternoons.

Once daylight savings begins, all members are welcome to play on Friday Twilights. New members will receive coaching and lots of encouragement. If interested, please contact

Dianne Oliver (0412 738 4201) or Pat Tate (0408 006 404)

As this is my last report from the Women’s Bowling Club, I thank all those who read my reports and supported our Club. It has been a pleasure to share our achievements and events.

Hopefully see you on the green.

Maureen Higgs Publicity Officer

BOWLS – LAWN (MENS) Liaison Director: David Raper

As President of the Revesby Workers Men’s Bowling Club, the 7th of September was an historic day. I was a part of seeing the men’s club dissolve, the women’s club dissolve, to join forces not 20 minutes later to become one single club.

While I had the honour of being the last President, I also have the honour of becoming the first to lead our club into the future. This was a great achievement for our little club. Our members unanimously agreed on this direction.

Within our club, this can only be a positive force to drive us forward. I want to thank

all our members for their support and agreement on our direction. I’m excited for our future of Lawn Bowls within our community.

On the same day we also held the Final of the men’s Major Singles which saw Col Heaslip and Darryl Oehlman do battle on the green to see who would take the title of Club Champion 2024/25. In a seesawing game, in which the lead changed hands several times, Col Heaslip took the title in a fantastic game in very windy conditions.

Congratulations to both players on a great game and more importantly great sportsmanship. Col can now enter the State Champion of Champion Singles early in the new year.

On Saturday 7 December we will be holding our Annual Olsen`s Xmas Triples. This is a great day with over 80 bowlers at Revesby Greens battling out for the title and some great prizes.

On 11 October the Friday Twilight Bowls will be starting, and it is available to all who would like to try bowls or would like a quick game on a Friday night. The games start at 4:45 and go for about 2 hours. Come along and give it a go, it is great fun, and you will meet new people every week. This runs every Friday during Daylight Saving Time.

Geoffrey Went President CRICKET

Liaison Director: Christine Benham

The senior and older junior teams in our district commenced their seasons on 21 September.

Regrettably, Revesby Workers’ Cricket Club has no junior teams for season 2024-25 as a consequence of poor decisions made by Cricket Australia and Cricket NSW over the last several seasons, specifically relating to juniors. Again, they are only offering the Junior Blasters Program for the tiny ones and then Stage 1 for kids effectively who are at school and who have to play modified matches with older kids.

We did see more juniors sign with our

Club this season, but we have had to direct them to other clubs, as there were not enough in any age group to form teams.

This season we have less senior teams than last season, having lost two of last season’s 7th grade sides (who came last and second last in their grade) and several players from two other sides who came last in their respective grades. Unfortunately, inappropriate grading can often result in players not returning.

So this season we have three quite full teams – 3rd grade, 4th grade and 5th grade. The 3rd grade side is an amalgamation of last year’s 1st and a 5th grade sides that came last on their ladders.

We encourage anyone looking to play cricket to contact us – Ray or Chris on 9773 7157. Park cricket, like we play, is fun for everyone!

On the other hand, we would like to congratulate our Over 35’s (Winter) Masters Cup team on taking out their Shield. It is great to see the Shield return to the Club after several years’ absence.

By the time you read this article, we will be heading down the path to the 2024-25 finals series. Let’s hope we see our teams be more competitive this season.

I hope you make the most of your summer and enjoy some beach cricket with family and friends!

FOOTBALL (SOCCER)

Liaison Director: Daniel Kurtz

Revesby Workers' Football Club have had another wonderful Season. The Football Club would like to extend a very special thank you to the RWC for their ongoing support of the Football Club.

Despite another wet start, the season was extended by 3 weeks, but all competitions managed to have all games played and a completed final series.

Our season was extended with plenty of mid-week games right across the

association, but we had 35 teams this year and just under 600 Players all representing RWFC.

This season certainly wouldn’t have been possible without our volunteer committee, coaches and managers - you are the backbone of our club, and we can’t thank you enough.

The Club had 10 teams making semi-final and 4 making grand finals. 1 of those teams went on to take out the Premiership. Well done and congratulations to all those teams. We have 2 teams that will be representing the club in Champion of Champions.

The Club held its junior and senior presentations in September, where our major awards were presented and those that have put in extra special efforts were acknowledged and celebrated. Both events were a great way for all members to come together and celebrate an enjoyable season.

Congratulations to all our major award winners.

Revesby Workers' Football Club is a Club for all seasons with our focus quickly shifting to Summer Football where it will see us host Girls and Ladies Summer Competitions at Milperra Reserve.

Early signs are showing a growth in our

All-Age Ladies Competition for 2024 Summer Football.

We can’t wait to see what 2025 will bring for RWFC. On behalf of Revesby Workers' Football Club, I would like to again thank all our volunteers and wish everybody a safe and happy holiday season.

GARDEN CLUB

Liaison Director: Christine Butters

Springtime is Mother Nature at its best, bringing new growth and more colour everywhere. We give thanks to propagators like the birds and the bees and green thumbs too!

And what better way to celebrate spring than a coach tour to Bowral’s Corbett Gardens’ Tulip Festival in September! Tulips and pansies surrounded us with colour and variety. Lunch was at the Mittagong RSL followed by a visit to the nearby Welby Nursery.

Our next tour will be our winter tour early next year. Our guest speakers continue to cover disparate topics of interest, variety being the spice of life.

Last September we had Helen Etheridge from the Stroke Foundation. She highlighted the importance and immediacy of recognising the first signs of a stroke. In the absence of an October speaker, we had a video presentation instead.

November’s speaker will be Peter Hey. In a June episode of Gardening Australia this year, he was introduced as the King of Clivias. His talk will cover the hardy clivia with its wide variety of beautiful, coloured blooms.

In December we will round off our year with our Christmas luncheon at the Revesby Workers Club. It will be a buffet with live entertainment and lucky door prizes.

There will be no meetings this December and January so we would like to wish everyone a Happy Christmas 2024 and a Prosperous New Year 2025! Thank you

one and all for making our ever-growing club a success.

We welcome gardeners and nongardeners alike. Monthly meetings resume in February at the Revesby Workers Club. Pre-registration opens at 9:30 am. Meetings are from 10 am (starting with our guest speaker) until 12 noon, with a break for morning tea.

We have raffles, monthly plant/flower competitions, a plant table with cuttings/ seedlings/seeds at giveaway prices, and a library. For more information, do refer to our website rwc.garden.com

HOCKEY (WOMENS’)

Liaison Director: Christine Benham

The Hockey Ladies have ended their winter season on a high.

This season saw the ladies move to the Macarthur Hockey Association Competition and compete in the Ladies C Grade.

After a somewhat eye-opening first round loss, we were wondering if we had made the right move. As it turns out, yes, it most definitely was the right move. After only 3 losses for the entire season, we made the Grand Final, which we won, and are now C Grade Premiers on debut!

We are so thankful to all our supporters who came out to watch our grand final game, many of whom play with other clubs during the season, but play for Revesby when we travel to Masters carnivals.

We had so many great moments this season, with Mikayla O’Dwyer named second highest goal scorer in the division, 5 team members representing MSW at the State Champs, being honoured by another club for our sportsmanship, and our team supporting others while enjoying a wine after our game.

We are looking forward to our end of year Presentation to celebrate the wonderful year.

Next year we will be travelling to Taiwan for the World Masters Games, we are so very excited for this trip! We have been fundraising all season with more activities being planned for early next year.

If you are interested in playing hockey, please contact us at revesbyworkershockey@gmail.com

Our guest speakers have been very information this year: Liz Cater from the Red Cross Phil McGower, Ex-Police Diver Stephen Cassettari – Artist Michelle Latham from Heavenly Celebrations

Gillian Lewis, Norfolk Island.

We are planning for many more trips and guest speakers for the for the New Year.

On a sadder note, our member Gwen McGrath passed away. She was a member for many years, she loved her cooking, travelling and family. She will be missed by those who knew her.

I would like to thank all our committee members and volunteers who have made this year so enjoyable and memorable. Thank you, Ladies.

Our group will be on break from Wednesday, 18th December 2024 and will resume on Wednesday, 5th February 2025 in the MacArthur Room.

At the NSW Junior State Championships in early September, Revesby Workers'

Swim Club continued its success. Congratulations to Ryder Pittams for earning a bronze medal, as well as our top ten finalists: Jewel Maddison Aguilar, Ava Donnelly, Jasmine Bochenek, Jaimee Hugo, Ryder Pittams.

Revesby Workers' Swim Club held its first interclub carnival on Saturday 14th September at Max Parker Leisure & Aquatic Centre. The day was filled with energy, camaraderie, and thrilling races as we brought together the vibrant swimming communities at our Inter-club carnival with Menai Swim club, Bankstown Sports Swim Club, Peakhurst Swim Club, Mounties Swim Club, Atlantis Swim club & Camden Amateur Swim club. It was a wonderful opportunity for swimmers to enjoy a variety of activities and connect with other clubs. With such great feedback on the day, it will be an annual event on our calendar next year.

As our swimmers return to their training, we wish them all the best as we head into the summer season, beginning with the Area Championships in October, Junior Metropolitan Championships in November, and concluding with Senior State and Open Water Championships in December.
