Both spoke openly about the importance of their roles within the local community, engaged individually with members and wished everyone a safe and festive holiday.

Executive Report

Dear Members,

We hope you all enjoyed a lovely festive season and holiday period. Whether you hosted Christmas or if you visited family, holidayed interstate or overseas, we hope you started 2023 in a positive way.

WELCOME DAVID RAPER AND LINDA DOWNEY

Following the retirement of John Rodwell and Ian Stromborg OAM at the conclusion of the 2022 Annual General Meeting, the results of the election for Board of Directors was announced confirming that David Raper and Linda Downey would be joining the Board of Directors at Revesby Workers’ Club.

David has been a member of Revesby Workers’ Club for over 35 years and was previously the Vice President of the Revesby Workers’ Men’s Bowling Club until his commencement on the Board. Born and raised in Revesby, David Raper now resides locally in Panania and has done so for the last 15 years. David has taken over the Liaison Director duties for the Revesby Workers’ Billiards and Snooker Club, Revesby Workers’ Darts Club and Revesby Workers’ Spearfishing Club.

Linda is no stranger to the Club having been awarded Life Membership on 27 October 2019. Linda is a Councillor of Canterbury Bankstown City Council and served as the Mayor of Bankstown in 2014-2015 and Deputy Mayor in 2021.

Linda is a careers advisor at a local High School and has been associated with Revesby Workers’ Club for many years.

It must be recognised that with the addition of Linda to the Board of Directors, it is the first time in not only the Club’s history but also amongst large Clubs in NSW that female Directors outnumber the males.

We have welcomed both David and Linda to the Board and hope you join us in congratulating them and wishing them all the best for their term.

NEW CLUB VICE PRESIDENT

Following the AGM in October last year, the Board elected Christine Butters as Vice President unopposed to replace John Rodwell. While Christine has said on a number of occasions that she believes she has big shoes to fill, we are extremely confident that the right person for the position has been appointed.

Christine Butters was elected to the Board on 29 September 2010. Her service not only to the Club but to the community is immeasurable. Christine is the Liaison Director for Revesby Workers’ Garden Club, Revesby Workers’ Ladies Group, Senior Athletics, Marine Rescue, Mooney Mooney Bowls Club and Money Mooney Fishing Club. Christine is also our Liaison Director for the Mooney Mooney Club and she holds strong ties with staff and members in that area.

Christine is a Life Member not only of Revesby Workers’ Club but also the Revesby Workers’ Little Athletics Club where she is also the President. Her dedication and support for all things community made it a very easy decision to elect her as the Vice President to recognise her tenure to date. Her passion for the Club and its members will ensure a very positive future for the Revesby Workers’ Group.

SCHOOL SUBSIDY PROGRAM

As outlined in our last Journal, the cheque presentation ceremony for our school subsidy program took place on 7 November 2022. Our Directors had the privilege of providing the $3,000 subsidy to each local primary and high schools in the local area. These donations help fund key projects and/or initiatives in our local schools which benefit students

from kindergarten all the way through to Year 12. We would like to thank those who attended the cheque presentation ceremony and look forward to seeing them again next year and determining what they plan to use their 2023 funding on.

CLUB RENOVATIONS

In recent times it has been our goal to offer a wider range of venues to introduce a new demographic into the Club while maintaining and improving current areas of the Club for our regular longstanding members. With the opening of Rogues Sports Bar occurring on 14 December 2021, renovations to the gaming floor and Miss Iggy’s commenced shortly thereafter, with the main gaming floor aiming for a completion date in April 2023.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful staff involved in the numerous renovations throughout the Club in 2022 and into the early part of 2023. These projects are not completed by a handful of staff, they require input from all areas of the business. From Marketing, Food and Beverage, Gaming, Maintenance, IT through to Operations. Our Senior Managers and their teams contribute significantly to the work and without their contribution, the renovations and opening of new outlets in the Club would not be possible.

We continually look to improve our Club for our members and guests and are very excited to see the hard work pay off as these new venues open. Looking to the future, we have plans to undertake a much needed upgrade to our Auditorium and Functions area in 2024 and will provide more detail as the scoping of the project commences.

The experiences I have gained through my professional career, and as Chair of the Board for BankstownCanterbury Community Transport organisation has given me a great grounding of delivering for our wonderful community, and if elected I will continue to work hard for the people of the East Hills electorate.

The Revesby Workers’ Club has a rich tradition of supporting our local community. This club was formed over 60 years ago by the workers in this area and has a strong connection to the Labor Party. I am honoured to be running for NSW parliament as the Labor candidate in the seat of East

While living and raising my family in the East Hills area for nearly 35 years I have made many great friendships and connections with community organisations. Also, as a long time volunteer in this area I recognise the importance of giving to communities to help them thrive and grow.

I’ve spoken to thousands of local residents over the past few months as

the Labor candidate. I want to thank our community for the support and openness I’ve received. People have been sharing their concerns with me and what I’ve heard is you are rightly troubled by the demise of our public education and hospital systems. You are against the privatisation of government assets that has made the cost of living worse by causing road tolls and electricity prices to increase exponentially. You also hold grave concerns for the loss of valuable education assets like the Western Sydney University campus at Milperra.

I share your concerns and will work hard for this community. After 12 years of a tired Liberal government our community deserves a fresh start with a Labor government led by Chris Minns.

2023 has dawned on us all bright and clear. Unfortunately, toward the end of 2022 the Covid statistics increased again but it seems we have once more come through, and like the resilient community we are life moves on.

At the Annual General Meeting in October last year two new members were elected to the Board and have fitted in very well. We have had several Board meetings where they are getting to know the workings of the Board and the Club. I was very humbled to be elected Vice-President upon the retirement of John Rodwell and look forward to serving our members to the best of my ability while holding this role.

Along with the new Board members there have been some reconfigurations of Liaison Director roles, with some sub clubs getting new Liaison Directors. I urge all members of sub clubs to work with their Liaison Director for the betterment of the group overall.

Your Liaison Director is available as a source of information, a link between the sub club and the parent club and to assist when and if problems may arise. See them as your group’s friend and you will all benefit.

Some of our sub clubs are seasonal and those such as Cricket and Little Athletics will be winding up their season just as Netball, Basketball and Soccer take on registrations and start to gear up for the winter season of sport. We wish all the players well and hope you have a season filled with fun and learning new skills while improving those already gained.

When you read this journal, the planning will be well underway for what has become our Annual International Women’s Day function on the 8 March, with guest speakers, entertainment and raffles there is lots of fun to be had at the luncheon and remember it may be International Women’s Day but we welcome our male counterparts too.

Wednesday 8 March

Funds raised assist to support Biyani House, our local Women’s’ Shelter. Refer to page 11 for full details.

The Club will also be holding an ANZAC Day service and this too is an event which I encourage you to attend. The service will be preceded by a March and is a poignant reminder and recognition of those who fought for the freedoms that we enjoy in our Country today. It is an opportunity for members of our sub-clubs to also participate in their club colours and honour the servicemen and women of Australia.

Here we are in 2023 already! After several years of disruptions due to the Coronovirus Pandemic, we seem to have settled into a “new normal”, learning to live with the virus. What a difference having a vaccine has made.

2022 was a year of major disruptions to many of our sporting sub clubs with flooding and ground closures causing major inconvenience. However, our thoughts and prayers go out to those throughout the country who have been extremely impacted by flooding, losing all they own, their homes, livelihoods, crops, stock etc. Nature certainly can be very cruel at times.

Australians are a very resilient lot, and, as they say... life goes on! Throughout our sub clubs there were lots of great achievements and celebrations - be it Lawn Bowls, Little Athletics, Cricket, Swim Club, to list just a few. There was great excitement in the Presidents’ Lounge during the Commonwealth Games when Revesby Workers’ Swim Club’s young swimmer, Abbey Connor swam for Australia and did the country proud.

Abbey was not the only Revesby Workers’ representative in the Australian contingent at the Commonwealth Games. Former junior cricketer, Ash Gardner also represented Australia in the star-studded Australian women’s cricket team.

There are many sporting and common interest sub clubs within Revesby Workers. Focus is on participation, so if you are looking to get active or broaden your interests and friendship groups, I invite you to explore the list of subclubs included in this Journal.

The Club’s Charity Committee (which I am privileged to Chair) has continued to raise funds to assist the local community. The last few years have provided little opportunity for fundraising events, however after several postponements due to COVID, we were finally able to hold our Christmas in July dinner, and had lots of fun in the process.

We are most grateful for the support provided to the Charity by Revesby Workers’ Club through our Friday night Meat Raffles at Revesby Workers’ Sports Club and through ticket sales for Seniors Concerts.

We look forward to a great year for Revesby Workers’ Club in 2023.

CHRISTMAS WRAP UP Community Our

The Club saw over 3,000 families visit from all over Sydney to capture those special festive memories in a set that featured a full-size sleigh with reindeer.

And let’s not forget our many fury friends who also enjoyed their visit with Santa at the Club’s outdoor set.

Christmas Day Lunches proved very popular once again with members, with three (3) package options to choose from, Firestone's full 'Festive Buffet' of traditional ham and roasts, fresh seafood and delicious desserts, Element's intimate 'Festive Feast' with beverage package and the final option to kick back and let us do the cooking, just pick up and serve with our 'Christmas at Home'. Our chefs had all your preferences covered.

Our Club Community Gives at Christmas

In 2022, the Clubs’ foyer played home to a very special Christmas tree, the ‘Workers’ Giving Tree’ and our Health Mates Fitness Centre hosted its annual Food Drive.

Supporting the local Community Care Christmas Appeal 2022, we invited all members, guests, staff and wider local community to generously donate a gift or food item and help make someone’s Christmas just a little bit more special. Community Care Christmas Appeal distributed over 250 Gifts and Food Hampers to households in the community who will be doing it tough over the festive season. They also host a Christmas Day Lunch, now in its 15th year, catering for over 150 people who normally would spend this important day alone.

Christmas is often a critical time for these families and the Community Care Appeal provides not only an opportunity to bring a little cheer during this time through Christmas presents and food hampers, but to create important community connections that often develop in long term friendships that further assist in identifying additional support services that can assist their situations.

Community Care supports families and individuals across the Bankstown LGA but more specifically in Padstow, Panania, Revesby, Picnic Point, Milperra and East Hills.

Thank you to the ongoing generosity of the Revesby Workers’ Community for continuing to give to others.

Photos with Santa the always popular annual event that sees the Club’s Brett Street Foyer transformed into the North Pole didn’t disappoint. Clockwise: Santa display setup, children chatting with Santa before photos and family (with fury friend) getting their photo taken at the Club's outdoor set.

THE RECOGNITION AND CELEBRATION OF STAFF ACHIEVEMENT

On Thursday 24 November, the Club held their bi-annual Club Wide Staff Meeting for all employees. The purpose is to bring the whole team together to thank them for their incredible support throughout the year. It also provides opportunity to reflect on the year that was and to communicate any new ventures for the Club. The meetings keep the whole team on the same page and in the know.

The recognition and celebration of milestone work anniversaries features throughout the meeting. This year, we proudly recognised 42 employees with anniversaries ranging from 5 years of service all the way up to 35 years of service! Our staff’s dedication to long service at the club clearly reflects the success of our core values; Adaptable, Teamwork, Supportive and Strength.

For the first year, we were also excited to congratulate 24 staff members who completed a variety of qualifications supported by the Club. Some of the courses undertaken included, Certificate IV and Diploma in Leadership & Management, Certificate III in Hospitality, Certificate III in Customer Engagement, Gaming Management Development and Data Visualisation.

A big congratulations also goes to our first 3 lucky recipients of the new Staff Scholarship program! These 3 staff members will receive $3,000 each to help them on their journey to attain the required credentials for their chosen field of study.

A successful day was had by all, with a great catered breakfast, organised by our Food and Beverage Department, plenty of prizes plus our wonderful guest speaker Greg Page who educated staff on his newest mission after leaving The Wiggles, which is to introduce Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) within communities.

ANZACDay Tuesday 25 April

ANZAC Day is the solemn day of remembrance of those Australian and New Zealand Army Corps soldiers who fought and died at Gallipoli in 1915. It is also a day of remembrance for all soldiers who died while fighting for their country.

ANZAC Day has been celebrated in Australia since October 1915 (in South Australia) then nationally on 25 April 1916. It has been a public holiday across the country since the mid-1920s.

ANZAC Day’s phrase ‘Lest We Forget’ is uttered after the reading of the Ode of Remembrance, taken from a poem called ‘For the Fallen’, written by Laurence Binyon in 1914 in England.

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.”

BASKETBALL

Liaison Director: Christine Benham

What a triumphant season! It was fantastic to see our basketball club get back into full swing. Some of our senior teams will sadly see the end of their primary school basketball as they move on to high school. However, we will have some of our high school teams play on Saturday mornings and Friday nights which is excellent news for the growth of our club. We have also had a lot of interest in new teams being formed next year.

It is worth acknowledging the influence the club has had in the development of our kids. We have a strong contingency in the Bankstown Bruins representative squads. This is a testament to the coaches and managers who have given up their time and energy to the development of those children’s talent.

We had a number of teams make it to the grand finals of the summer comp, with two teams taking out the win. The club has been busy at the beginning of

the year forming 12 teams for the 2023 Summer Comp.

Revesby Workers Basketball Club continues to grow its members and is going from strength to strength. We have a new Sponsor that joined us in 2022 –Sydney Rubbish Services, assisting us on providing new shorts to our members for the season.

Our committee has grown with the addition of three new members. We’d like to thank them as well as our volunteers who make the running of our club possible week in week out.

These are exciting times for the club and we look forward to seeing our ideas come to fruition next year.

BOWLS – INDOORS (LADIES)

Liaison Director: Daryl Melham

As the year draws to an end we say farewell to Ian Stromborg OAM as our Liaison Director and welcome Daryl Melham AM who has taken over the role.

As with many social clubs participation numbers were down most of the year but our members were determined to keep going and we certainly did. It meant each week team numbers and combinations were dependent of however many ladies we had to play.

There was fantastic competition, lots of cheering, lots of laughing and enjoying each other’s company.

1st. M. Roger s/P.Merrill/J.Hansen

The Presidents Cup knockout competition was completed on 30 November 2022 with Mavis Hall winning and Cheryl McDonald runner up. Congratulations ladies and well done to all who competed.

We held our annual Christmas Party on Wednesday, 7 December 2022 when we partied hard to end our year on a high note. The food was fabulous, we all ate too much and we’d like to thank the Revesby Workers’ Club staff for the great service as well.

Thanks to also Roger for wonderful music which had the ladies up and dancing like no one was watching. We only get better with age! As he has every year Ian Stromborg attended our party where we all had the opportunity to thank him for the many years of support to our Club.

Whilst the year saw us losing two of our beautiful ladies and quite a few others suffering ill health it was fabulous to see Cathy Packwood join us after many months off, she looks forward to resuming bowls in the New Year.

It was also a delight to have Miss Phyliss Merrill back only a day after she left hospital having spent 7 weeks there. She was presented with the trophy for winning the Achievers Award and had us entertained by shaking it up on the dance floor. Go Girl.

We wish everyone a safe and Happy Christmas and all the best in 2023. Bowls resumes on Wednesday, 11 January 2023. If you would like to join our wonderful Club give me a call, new members are very welcome.

BOWLS – LAWN (LADIES) Liaison Director: Daryl Melham

A special highlight of our year was winning the District Grade 4 pennants. We were delighted that District President, Margaret Wicks, came to our club to present us with our pennant badges and our pennant flag, which now flies high on our flag pole.

We appreciated that Revesby Workers’ Club President, Daryl Melham AM, joined

us for the presentation and morning tea. Our club played the annual friendship day against Club Picnic Point recently and after a great day of competition, we were successful overall. A lovely lunch ensured a good day was enjoyed by all.

Pat Tate, Elizabeth McFarland and Jan Calderon were successful in winning the district triples tournament in a thrilling final, narrowly defeating Grandviews. Due to illness Pat Tate had to pull out, being replaced by Maureen Higgs for the Zone playoffs. The team played against St John’s Park and were sadly beaten on the day.

Our club major singles final has had to be postponed until 2023 due to injury. The club pairs and triples will also be played in the New Year.

The club fours were played in good spirit with Betty Davidson, Jan Pennell, Joy Pavey and Ellie Atme successfully taking out the championship. The runners-up were Maureen Higgs, Jeanette Donkin, Norma Gray and Jan Calderon.

Another event which resumed after COVID was the “teapot” day played against the bowlers from Ingleburn Bowling Club. The teapot trophy, beautifully polished by the reigning champs from 2019 - Ingleburn - was this year won by Revesby Workers’. It now takes pride of place in our locker room. The games were competitive and a good day was had by all.

With the year winding down, we will enjoy our Christmas break and look forward to another great year on the greens in 2023. We really appreciate the wonderful work Craig and Daniel put in each week, keeping our greens at their best.

We always welcome new members and coaching is provided for inexperienced bowlers. Our bowling year resumes on 12 January2023. We play every Thursday morning and many of our ladies bowl with the men on Saturday afternoon.

We would love to see you on the green. If you are interested, please contact our secretary, Pat Tate on 0408 006 404 or our president Dianne Oliver on 0412 738 320.

CRICKET Liaison Director: Christine Benham

This summer season is well underway, with the finals being played in March. Performances have been good, generally, and we are having fun, which is what park cricket is about! Thank you to our wonderful band of volunteers – coaches, captains, scorers and managers. Cricket cannot be played without people stepping up to take on these roles.

All players, junior and senior, have been doing the Club proud, with some great performances and displaying the true spirit of cricket!

The Woolworths cricket programs for the very young – Junior Blasters for 5-7 year olds and Master Blasters for 8 -10 year olds - are again being run at an Association level this season, with sessions being held on Tuesday evenings at Amour Park, Revesby.

Numbers have been substantially lower this season, but we are delighted to have dedicated volunteers involved in the program. There has been an absence of promotion of the programs by Cricket Australia and Cricket NSW.

The FORCE – Fathers Of Revesby Cricket Eleven – have not played any matches yet this season, but there is still enthusiasm to get on the park and, indeed, to play in any festivals that come along.

We hope everyone had a very happy Christmas, and wish you all a wonderful 2023, now that we have been learning to live in the new COVID environment.

Take care and stay safe.

GARDEN CLUB

Liaison Director: Christine Butters

The Garden Club will usher in the New Year with its first monthly meeting in February. We welcome gardeners and non-gardeners alike. Quoting the great poet William Butler Yeats “There are no strangers, only friends you have not met yet.”

Last year was a resounding success with an increase in membership and the resumption of our twice yearly bus tours.

A Service Award and also Lifetime Memberships were awarded to the faithful, highlighting the fact that our members are indeed stayers. Kudos to the committee members and the members themselves for making all of this possible!

We rounded up 2022 by reprising last year’s successful Christmas lunch. The buffet was generous as were the lucky door prizes. Live entertainment was provided by Russell Churcher who crooned his way into everyone’s hearts.

President Val Kennedy took this opportunity to thank Liaison Director Christine Butters for her dedication to the club. Whenever possible, Christine always came to judge our floral competition entries even straight after working a night shift! In response, Christine praised the club for going strong despite COVID --- blooming, so to speak, in more ways than one!

Our monthly speakers will resume in March. They will cover diverse topics, not necessarily only about gardening. There will also be the usual floral competitions, bargain plant table, raffles, coach tours, and gardening books to borrow.

We meet every first Saturday of the month (except for December and January) at the Revesby Workers’ Club from 10am to 12 noon.

the last quarter. We have had a festive fashion event, brilliant guest speakers and made our charity donation from our annual fund-raising efforts.

Our Ladies Group held their annual Christmas event on Wednesday, 14 December 2022. The day started early in the Macarthur Room followed by the Christmas luncheon in the Acacia Room. The group had a relaxed and enjoyable day.

We now reflect on the year and the friendships which we have developed over time with our group. We also had a visit from the local member, Wendy Lindsay during the event.

I would like to thank all our committee members and volunteers who have provided support to the Ladies Group during the year. Without you and your dedication we would not be able to have such a wonderful experience together.

The Ladies Group will take a break and return to the Macarthur Room on Wednesday, 8 February, 2023 from 9:30am.

Should anyone wish to come and visit or may be looking to join our group, please contact us through our email address revesbyladiesgroup@outlook.com
