Betty Ruthven Celebrates 100

Betty Ruthven of Panania recently celebrated her centenary and received a commemorative medal to mark the special occasion!

A dedicated volunteer, Betty contributed over 20 years at the Royal Botanic Gardens and was active in many community groups, including the HiLo Ladies Social Golf Club, Out & About Social Club, Sydney Bushwalking Club, and the Australian Plant Society. She has always enjoyed gardening, baking, sewing clothes, and travelling extensively.

Her daughter Kathy noted that the close friendships Betty made were a significant part of her life. "She enjoyed her centenary celebrations with family and friends at a Centennial Vineyard in the Southern Highlands".

THE YEAR IN REVIEW

With the closing of the 2023/2024 Financial Year this provides opportunity to reflect on the past 12 months, on the key achievements, special events, community contributions, new member facilities and services, future developments and fond farewells.

JULY 2023

Homegrown Cricket Star; Ashleigh ‘Ash’ Gardner emerged as one of Revesby Workers‘ Cricket Club’s finest talents. She developed her all-round game before eventually debuting in the Australian women’s Twenty20 team against New Zealand in 2017. At just 26, Ashleigh played for Australia in the Women’s Ashes Series in England. Ash achieved new heights, claiming an incredible 12 wickets in the opening Ashes Test versus England - a record tally for any Australian woman. In recognition of this incredible performance, she was awarded Player of the Match.

Vale William Pearce; on 3 July 2023, William “Bill” Pearce passed aged 97. Bill was one of the Club’s 8 remaining Foundation Members and living local, he still frequented the Club when he was able.

As a young married man having moved into Sphinx Avenue with his wife Jean, both Bill and Jean established themselves in the community where Bill became a member of the Workers Club. He enjoyed socialising in the Sports Bar, playing snooker and darts and always had a bet on a Saturday with friends.

When Bill reached retirement age, he celebrated with his family in the old dining room upstairs in the Club as you can see highlighted in the photo below. Bill was always very proud of the Club, and to be part of a great Community Club’s history.

AUGUST 2023

Annual Greenkeepers Bowls Day; Head Greenkeeper at Revesby Greens, Craig Tuohy, successfully raised $6,000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

Following his father’s recovery, Craig has been organising this event, with the support of fellow Greenkeeper Daniel Farrel, both the Men’s and Ladies Bowlers and major sponsor, First Class Tree Service for the past 6 years. This year's event will take place on Friday 2 August.

Greg Page's ‘Heart of The Nation’; the Club has continued to support the original Yellow Wiggle Greg Page's life-saving "Heart of the Nation" initiative by providing a further $20,000 through ClubGrants to install another 4-5 public defibrillators around Revesby.

After suffering a cardiac arrest on 17 January 2020 while performing a bushfire relief show, Greg is still with us today due to the life-saving Automated External Defibrillator (“AED”) available at the venue.

During his recovery, he was astounded to learn that 90% of people who suffer cardiac arrest outside of hospital do not survive. In knowing this statistic, he made it his mission to educate all Australians on how to perform CPR and the importance of AEDs being more available in public places

and their key role to surviving cardiac arrest. This is how Heart of the Nation began under Greg’s direction with one key message “Call, push, shock”.

SEPTEMBER 2023

Revesby Greens; the formerly known Revesby Workers’ Sports Club was renamed ‘Revesby Greens’. Along with this change was the introduction of a new caterer, bringing a variety of authentic Chinese meals; Sizzling Garlic Prawns and Sweet and Sour Pork, to classic bistro favourites of Chicken Schnitzel and Burgers. This also saw the introduction of ‘Kids Eat FREE’ every Thursday, ‘Acoustic Arvos’ every Saturday and ‘Furry Friends’ welcome every weekend, to name just a few.

OCTOBER 2023

Welcome Daniel Kurtz; elected by the members at the General Meeting on Tuesday 3 October 2023 as Director to the Board. Daniel is the 42nd Director appointed to the Club, and would be a familiar face to many members due to his current Presidency of the Revesby Workers’ Football Club since 2019. He is also a Director of Bankstown District Football Association and has been since 2022.

Daniel has grown up in the area, attending a local school and is passionate about his volunteer role which enables him to give back to the community through sporting organisations that provide a structured and safe environment for people of all ages to participate and have fun.

Member Anniversary Celebrations; on Thursday 26 October, a special event was held for our members who celebrated their 25, 40 and 50 year member anniversary.

The event started with a morning tea for our 40 and 50 year members followed by a dinner for our 25 year members. The Club’s Board were present to congratulate all members who attended to celebrate these milestones.

DECEMBER 2023

Seniors Christmas Concert; this annual event, held on 12 December, once again proved very popular, attracting over 400 senior members. All enjoyed a 2-course menu followed by a series of live festive performances. Special appearances were also made by Mrs Clause and our very own Wally The Worker, sporting a Santa Hat.

Giving to Families at Christmas; every year the Clubs’ foyer plays home to a very special Christmas Tree, the ‘Workers’ Giving Tree’, while our Health Mates Fitness Centre hosts an annual ‘Food Drive’.

Both activities are in support of the local Padstow Community Care Christmas Appeal and each year all members, guests, and staff are invited to participate. The response was overwhelming, with over 200 gifts for children to open Christmas morning and 183.5kg of food products used to create festive hampers for families to enjoy at home with their loved ones.

Thank you to everyone who donated, we know many local families truly appreciate your generous donations.

JANUARY

2024

Vale Terrance (Terry) Semlitzky; we paid tribute to Life Member and former Director Terence "Terry" Semlitzky, who passed away at age 80. Terry joined Revesby Workers’ Club on 13 April 1966, and proudly served as a Director for 25 years from 26 September 1993 until 28 October 2018, whereby he was the Liaison Director for Revesby Workers’ Billiards and Snooker, Darts, Domino, Fishing, Softball Clubs and Revesby Bowling Fishing Club. In 2003 he was awarded Life Membership of Revesby Workers’ for his considerable and ongoing contributions to the Club. Terry will be fondly missed, but remembered as a proud and loyal member, respected Director, a keen competitor, and for his selfless dedication to his community.

Function Centre Renovations; in January the extensive renovation works to the Clubs Level 1, which includes the Whitlam Theatre and Function Rooms commenced, and are expected to be completed by October 2024.

It’s been more than 20 years since the Whitlam Theatre has undergone such a dramatic transformation. The entire Level 1 area over the years has had only minor refurbishments, so these major works will ensure the technology is current, the layout configurations maximise space and we are able to provide state-of-the-art, modern, and flexible facilities.

Thank you to all our extremely understanding members who may have been impacted by disruptions throughout this time. We are certainly looking forward to unveiling the finished centre in the coming months.

Minifit; In January, local children enthusiastically participated in our highly successful 2024 Minifit Clinics session, led by rugby league legend Anthony Minichiello!

These engaging and free educational fitness sessions were fully booked, attracting an exceptional turnout at Milperra Reserve.

This year marks the sixth consecutive year that the Revesby Workers’ Club has proudly sponsored this initiative, actively promoting awareness of the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle and cultivating lasting, healthy habits, while also encouraging children to have fun and build new friendships along the way!

FEBRUARY 2024

Tertiary Scholarship Program; during February the Education Committee met to review new applications for the annual Tertiary Scholarship Program.

For 2024 the Club had a huge 37 previous recipients receive their $500 scholarship for ongoing studies providing a total of $18,500 to previous recipients, 9 of whom were in their final year of studies.

Similar to last year, we received 8 applications achieving ATARs of over 90, which made 2024 an extremely competitive process.

The committee awarded 1 male and 1 female with a $3,000 scholarship and 12 applicants with a $500 scholarship totalling $12,000.

These 2024 recipients will receive a further $500 for each subsequent year of their degree upon submission of successful results.

This took the total of Tertiary Scholarship payments in 2024 to $30,500. Congratulations to all of our previous and new recipients.

academic learning, offering benefits to both students and the entire school community.

Sydney FC Disability Program; in partnership with Sydney FC's grassroots disability programs, the Club contributed $15,000 to extend this initiative into the CanterburyBankstown LGA.

Many children with disabilities may express interest in participating in sports but face limited opportunities to find inclusive activities and sporting organisations in their local communities.

Recognising this need, the new program was launched at Caroline Chisholm School during February, providing a platform for children to explore and develop skills through engaging in physical activities with a dedicated Sydney FC representative.

Through weekly sessions, each child was given the opportunity to participate in interactive group soccer play, specifically tailored to their abilities. These sessions not only aim to enhance physical skills but also prioritise the social well-being of the participants, fostering a sense of inclusion and belonging.

Broderick Gillawarna Sensory Garden Project; funded via the ClubGRANTS scheme, the Club generously donated over $25,000 to transform Broderick Gillawarna Schools Smell, Touch, Look, and Listen –Sensory Garden. This significant contribution revitalised the space to incorporate elements stimulating all senses for students with disabilities. The use of fragrant plants, textured foliage, vibrant colours, and ambient sounds create an immersive experience.

A new accessible footpath was constructed to ensure inclusivity for individuals with mobility or physical disabilities. This initiative not only promotes environmental awareness but also supports

MARCH 2024

International Women’s Day (IWD); this March marked our fourth annual IWD event, held at the vibrant Miss Iggy’s. Beyond celebrating women, the event also raised funds to support Biyani House – Revesby Women’s Shelter.

As part of the Women's Community Shelters network, Biyani House offers short-term and emergency services to women in need, providing a safe environment for them to rebuild their confidence, self-esteem, and take control of their lives.

event sponsors, board members, and attendees, Revesby Workers’ Club was thrilled to announce that we achieved our highest donation to date, exceeding $24,000, to support this crucial cause.

Thank you to all who generously donated and attended, not only to celebrate the achievements of women but also to recognise the ongoing journey towards a more inclusive world. Save the Date for 2025, Friday 7 March.

Revesby Workers' Little Athletics; on 15 March celebrated the opening of their new facilities at Kelso North Regional Sporting Precinct.

The Official opening acknowledged the hard work of Revesby Workers’ Vice President Christine Butters and the committee, who were heavily involved in making this new centre possible.

The opening festivities showcased parent races, a tug of war, and race from the energetic under 6’s! Congratulations to Revesby Workers’ Little Athletics Centre on their new home!

Sydney FC She Can Program; in alignment with International Women’s Day and the #InspireInclusion movement, the Sydney FC Foundation's "She Can" program launched in the Revesby Workers’ Football Club with members of the 12-15 Girls team.

This program aims to dismantle the barriers faced by young girls during their early teenage years, a period that often sees a high dropout rate in organised sports, particularly in comparison to young boys of the same age.

Through both theoretical and practical approaches, the 8-week project seeks to enhance retention rates in sports and provide more opportunities for girls to enjoy the benefits associated with participation in sports.

APRIL 2024

Anzac Day 2024; On 25 April, Revesby Workers’ Club hosted a memorable ANZAC Day event, drawing nearly 300 community members, including the Padstow Rotary Club, Revesby Workers' Little Athletics, St. Luke’s Primary School, and many others.

The morning began with a march from the Bankstown YMCA to the Revesby Workers’ Club Cenotaph, led by the 9th Regiment of the Royal Australian Artillery, followed by the Governor Macquarie Memorial Pipe Band.

A special thanks to all of the club members and community who attended to show respect and honour our veterans and their families in the local district.

Music Therapy for Children with Disability; this year, the Club supported the Morris Children's Fund to provide music therapy sessions for children with disabilities.

These sessions took place weekly during the school term

The major sponsor on the team jersey was CTC Cruises, a subsidiary of the CTC Shipping Line Company, who set up a small travel business at Revesby in the mid-1970’s. Later known as Revesby Travelscene, this was the first private business to operate from a Club precinct.

MAY 2024

Sub Club Appreciation; held on Sunday 19 May to coincide with Volunteers Week, Revesby Workers' Club hosted our annual Sub Club Appreciation BBQ at Revesby Greens to celebrate the efforts of the volunteers who form the backbone of our community.

With over 60 attendees from a variety of Sub Clubs, including Cricket, Swimming, Seniors Golf, Men’s and Ladies’ Bowls, Garden Club, Hockey, Netball, Little Athletics, Toastmasters, Indoor Ladies’ Bowls, and Soccer. SCHOOL SUBSIDY SUCCESS STORY

The Revesby Workers’ School Subsidy Program is dedicated to collaborating with 28 local schools to support essential educational initiatives. As part of this program, Broderick Gillawarna School has been awarded a subsidy of $5,000.00 to contribute to the 'Music Makes a Difference' project. This initiative is specifically aimed at enriching the lives of students with multiple disabilities through the transformative power of music education.

The allocated funds were used to facilitate a specialised music program that has been tailored to accommodate the diverse learning styles of the students. The Music Instructors adapt teaching methods to address the unique challenges faced by each individual student, ensuring that all learners receive the support they need to thrive.

The program creates an inclusive and supportive learning environment where students with disabilities can engage in meaningful musical experiences. By focusing on both skill development and personal enjoyment, the program will encourage the children to build a love for music and help students build confidence and express their creativity.

As part of our ClubGRANTS community initiatives, Revesby Workers’ Club continues to support Kidsplay@ Revesby, an integrated, intergenerational playgroup that actively encourages and supports children,

including those with additional needs, and their carers to participate. With over $8,000 donated within the last 12 months, we are proud to support 27 registered families in the group, comprising 23 parents, 10 grandparents, and 29 children. This funding has provided a support worker, a significant asset, especially with a larger number of younger children and two children needing additional assistance.

Kidsplay@Revesby is a vibrant, multicultural group where over eight different languages are spoken, reflecting the rich diversity of our community. The playgroup has celebrated International Women’s Day and Harmony Day with morning tea events this year. These gatherings allow children to learn through play, developing language, social, and educational skills while building friendships. The intergenerational aspect of the playgroup is particularly delightful. Parents and grandparents engage in activities such as tea parties, puppet plays, and crafts, enjoying meaningful interactions with each other. This fosters social interaction and builds support networks for families within the local area.

Revesby Workers’ Club is committed to enhancing these community connections and supporting the developmental needs of all children involved.

EXPANDING SUPPORT FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTIMS

Revesby Workers' Club is dedicated to aiding community services that support individuals, children, and families affected by domestic violence. As part of our ClubGRANTS commitments and building on our ongoing support for initiatives like Biyani House - Revesby Women’s Shelter, we have recently invested over $20,000 to enhance

the counselling services provided by the Coolaburoo Neighbourhood Centre.

This investment addresses the growing demand from local shelters and women's services to hopefully reduce the current waiting list for Domestic Violence (DV) counselling. With the funding provided, Coolaburoo have expanded their successful program for Family and Domestic Violence victims, reaching more individuals in need within the community.

‘Coolaburoo has been able to create and offer a safe space for clients, where they feel comfortable to unload in confidence and without judgment.’

SUB CLUB APPRECIATION

On Sunday 19 May, the Revesby Workers' Club hosted our annual Sub Club Appreciation BBQ at Revesby Greens, coinciding with Volunteers Week. This event celebrated the efforts of the volunteers who form the backbone of our community.

The highlight of the day was the heartfelt appreciation expressed by Revesby Workers' Club directors. Club Vice President Christine Butters delivered a warm welcome speech, emphasising the crucial role these groups play in supporting the families and community members in the local area.

The event also featured a hugely successful raffle, organised by the Bill Bullard Charity Committee and hosted by Director Christine Benham, to raise funds for various deserving projects within the community. Liaison Directors, Linda Downy, David Raper, Daniel Kurtz, and Ex Directors Baden Kirgan, Dennis Hayward, and Ian Stromborg were all in attendance to support their associated Sub Clubs.

The Sub Club Community Appreciation BBQ at Revesby Greens was a small gesture of our appreciation, reaffirming the club's commitment to community, connection, and care.

JOINING THE LAWN BOWLS COMMUNITY: A PERSONAL JOURNEY - JULIA HENRY

Revesby Greens stands as a local community hub, home to both the Revesby Workers Men’s and Ladies Bowling Clubs. These clubs not only provide a venue for engaging in lawn bowls but also offer valuable social interaction and physical benefits, especially for the senior community. Julia Henry, a new member, shares her heartwarming journey of finding physical activity and discovering the welcoming community through lawn bowls at Revesby Greens.

“After my partner passed away, I was left feeling alone. I needed to find a way to connect with people again, and that's when I discovered lawn bowls. It turned out to be the perfect fit. Everyone at the club was so friendly from the start. I've made quite a few friends among the ladies there, which has been fantastic. Not to mention, getting out and playing has been great for staying active and enjoying the outdoors.

Deciding to take up lawn bowls wasn't hard. It’s a game that’s suited for both the young and the old, and it's easy to see why it's loved by so many. It's given me a chance to meet new people and enjoy some friendly competition, all while getting a bit of exercise in the fresh air. It's just what I needed to help me find my feet again.” – Julia Henry

Revesby Greens continues to be a beacon of community spirit, bringing together individuals of all ages to enjoy the camaraderie and physical activity that lawn bowls offers. Julia's story is a testament to the club's supportive environment and the positive community impact.

SCOUTS AUSTRALIA EXPEDITION

During the April School holidays local Scout and Revesby Workers' Football Club member, Cobalt Walsh, led a group of 5 other Scouts on a hiking expedition along the Larapinta Trail in Central Australia.

The Scouts are all attached to 1st Picnic Point Scout Group and aged 14 - 15 years old. The expedition was largely adult-free! The Scouts were responsible for planning the hike, including the itinerary, activity plan, risk assessment, funding, transport, equipment, and food. The group completed stages 1-3 of the trail that runs between Alice Springs and Standley Chasm in the West MacDonnell Ranges. They covered a distance of 70km over 5 days through challenging terrain while carrying all their supplies on their backs.

Before and after the hike they also visited the Partjima Sound & Light Festival, had a tour of Alice Springs Telegraph Station, a guided walk with a NT Parks Ranger at the sacred site of Emily Gap, and participated in an Aboriginal cultural education session with Traditional Land Owners.

The adventure was supported by the Dick and Pip Smith Leadership Through Adventure Fund and Revesby Workers' Club, to encourage young people to set greater adventurous challenges and goals that will develop their selfconfidence, resilience, and leadership capabilities.

REVESBY WORKERS SWIM CLUB

As we dive into the Winter Short Course competition for Revesby Workers Swim Club and before highlighting our incredible results so far, I’d like to thank Jane Davis and Gail Cauchi (Swimming Club Life Member) for their hard work and dedication as they stepped down from the

committee at our Annual General Meeting in May 2024. A big thank you also goes to our 13 committee members who have taken on roles within the swim club.

In May, the club participated in the Metropolitan Southwest Carnival with 76 competitors over the two-day event. We saw many personal bests, amazing results, and plenty of smiles. Special congratulations to Joash Dante for breaking the 50-meter freestyle record and Blake Waugh for setting a new 50-metre backstroke record.

A huge congratulations to Abbey Connor for her outstanding achievement at the recent Australian Olympic Swimming Trials, where she placed second in the 200m butterfly. Abbey began her swimming journey with Revesby Workers Swim Club under head coach Alex Clarke. Finishing fourth at the Commonwealth Games in 2022 at just 17 years of age. Now swimming with the USC Spartans in Queensland, we wish Abbey all the best of luck at the Olympic Games in Paris.

Congratulate the following swimmers for qualifying for the NSW squads from their National performances in April:

• NSW Open Water Squad: Nicholas Macher

• NSW Sharks Squad: Jiazi Chen, Lola Pittams, Marli Broughton, Samuel Skrabak, Jacob Whitton.

Finally, good luck to all our swimmers competing at the Metropolitan competition in July and State Championships in August/September.

Plenty of smiles for the Revesby Workers' Swim Club.

This significant event within the Australian powerlifting calendar, focuses on showcasing the talents of young powerlifters across the country. These championships cater specifically to athletes in the Sub Junior (14-18 years old) and Junior (19-23 years old) age categories, providing them with a platform to compete at a national level and demonstrate their strength, skill, and dedication to the sport.

Maybelle was awarded first place in her weight division in the under 69kg class and was also awarded ‘Best Female Lifter’ overall.

• Squat - 166kg (National Junior Record)

• Bench - 85kg

• Deadlift -190.5kg (National Junior record)

Total - 441.5kg (National Junior Record)

STRENGTHENING MENTAL FITNESS

On 10 May 2024, staff representatives had the privilege of attending the esteemed Gotcha4Life Mateship Luncheon held at Bankstown RSL. This event, hosted by the notfor-profit foundation Gotcha4Life, marked an important occasion dedicated to advocating for mental fitness as a cornerstone of personal well-being.

Gotcha4Life stands at the forefront of a movement aimed at fostering mental resilience and well-being. Their mission is clear: to inspire and empower individuals to prioritise and build their mental fitness, just as they would their physical fitness. The Mateship Luncheon provided a platform to discuss strategies and initiatives that can make a tangible difference in the lives of many.

The luncheon was not only a forum for thought-provoking discussions but also a celebration of community and camaraderie.

Attendees enjoyed a beautiful lunch, with all ticket purchases directly contributing to the cause of mental fitness advocacy.

UNITING FOR A CAUSE

In a heartwarming display of community spirit and generosity, our club recently gathered on 23 May 2024, for the annual Biggest Morning Tea in support of the Cancer Council. The event, a longstanding tradition that brings together our Club family, transformed our staff room into a vibrant sea of yellow and blue.

The morning commenced with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and an array of treats prepared by our Food & Beverage team, from delicate pastries to homemade cakes and savory delights. Adding a personal touch, several staff members contributed their own baked goods, ensuring there was something to satisfy every palate.

In the spirit of giving, each staff member who indulged in morning tea donated a gold coin, with all proceeds pledged to support the Cancer Council's vital initiatives. This year, our collective effort will assist in funding crucial research, cancer prevention programs, and support services for those affected by cancer.

Reflecting on the success of the event, our club reaffirms its commitment to making a positive impact beyond our walls. Throughout the year, we actively engage in various charitable activities, striving to support causes that resonate deeply with our staff, and will continue to do so.

THE NEWTOWNER

POP UP BAR

AVAILABLE AUGUST TO OCTOBER

The Newtowner is a beer produced by Young Henry's Brewery, that reflects the cultural backdrop of its Newtown location in its craft beers. In a nod to the suburb’s past and present influences, the brewery used a blend of Australian malts. Then added three varieties of local hops to make it fun, fruity and even a little bitter - just like Newtown. The Newtowner is classified as an Australian Pale Ale (APA), it's a refreshing and approachable beer, making it a popular choice.

Benefits OF EXERCISING WITH OTHERS THE

THE POWER OF GROUP EXERCISE CLASSES

Group exercise classes, from Yoga, Cycle and HIIT, all offer more than just physical benefits. Let’s take a look at why working out with others, especially in classes, is so advantageous.

MOTIVATION & ACCOUNTABILITY

Exercising with others boosts motivation and creates accountability. The collective energy and social expectations make you less likely to skip workouts and push you to work that little bit harder.

STRUCTURED WORKOUTS

Led by trained instructors, group classes provide effective, varied and safe workouts. This structure helps to keep your sessions interesting and prevents plateaus, keeping your fitness journey exciting and progressive.

SOCIAL INTERACTION & SUPPORT

Group classes foster a sense of community, leading to new friendships and a support system. The social and motivational aspects of group exercise improve mental health by reducing anxiety, stress and symptoms of depression. It is also thought that social contact helps with resilience against the effects of Alzheimer's disease.

SKILL DEVELOPMENTS

Group classes introduce new exercises and techniques that help you to learn and develop new skills. Instructors offer modifications for different fitness levels, ensuring appropriate challenges for everyone.

FUN

Best of all, group exercise classes are fun! With lively music, enthusiastic instructors and the energy from the group dynamic, exercise becomes an activity you look forward to, rather than a chore, helping to create a healthy lifelong habit.

At Health Mates Fitness Centre, we offer classes for everyone’s needs;

Strength: Cardio: Dance: Mobility, Mind & Core: Gentle: Specialty: Load Up, Tone Up, Strong Set and Booty Burn. Fight Fit, HIIT, Cycle and Step. Zumba and Move to Music. Pilates, Stretch, Hatha Yoga and Vinyasa Yoga. Lite & Lo, Active Over 50s and Strong & Stable. Mums & Bubs and Kids Bootcamp.

Liaison Director: Christine Butters Illawong Revesby Workers Athletic (IRWA) Summer and Winter Presentation was held on Sunday 19th May at the Ridge athletics track, we were very lucky to have a sunny afternoon to conduct our Presentations. We had a lot of our members there to receive their awards. The federal member for Hughes Jenny Ware. Ms Ware was instrumental in helping IRWA secure a Federal Government Grant supplying the track with bench seats outside the track to give more spectator viewing areas to watch the high jump, discus and hammer throw.

We have 4 major awards every year, Cross Country Champion, Graham Kearns Award our Pierre De Coubertin Sportsmanship, Ian Kearns Award Best Cross-Country Performance of the year at State Championships and Max Wilkinson Award for best track and field performance. Our winners were Brendan Ebejer, Rosie FloydKerry & Holly Carr (joint Graham Kearns winners for sportsmanship), Billy Herb for best country performance and Abbie Taddeo for best track and field performance.

We were also able to recognise Tallara JosephRiogi who broke the U16 National Javelin record with a massive personal best throw of 51.69 Illawong Athletics INC held its AGM on the following Thursday 22nd May where IRWA officially appointed a new President in Michael Dooley and welcomed 3 new general committee members.

One of our open male 400m sprinters Teri Fragiadakis competed in the 400m at the Coral Coast Carnival breaking the meet record in a time of 47.95. A huge clap to all our IRWA athletes and their families who attended the Athletics NSW Cross Country Relays on Saturday the 1st of June in the torrential rain and muddy conditions at the Armoury course at Sydney Olympic Park .

It was a busy day with lots going on, the rain adding a new level to the experience!

Our U12 girls Ivy, Ruby, Lily and Katie ran first finishing 16th in the 4 x 1500m. Next our U14 boys Billy, Archie, Koby and Hunter finished 4th in a very tough race missing the medals by a minute!!

Last for our cross-country relay teams were the U20 girls Amelia, Aiesha, Anneka and Rosie saw the best or one would say the worst of the course conditions with very heavy rain and slops of mud along the way finishing 5th only a minute outside the medals.

Thank you to their families for bringing them out to Sydney Olympic Park on the day and for the athletes showing up to race.

Earlier in the morning in somewhat drier conditions but perhaps more chilly weather Nicolle C won the 10km race walks for the 50-59 age group.

On Saturday June 22nd we thought we were about to see a repeat of the Armoury weather at Nowra for the Cross Country Championships however the rain stayed away all day!

Congratulations to Archie who won the U11 boys 2km race, Billy finished 5th in the U14 boys in a close race for 3rd and Milly finished 7th in the U20 race.

Tomysha Clark placed 2nd at Athletics Australia National championships in the long jump with a leap of 6.35 metres to inch her way closer to Olympic Selection for Paris 2024. As a result of her second placing she was selected in the Australian team to compete at the Oceania Championship in Fiji. In Fiji she jumped 6.36 metres and gained valuable bonus points to aid in her getting closer to selection in the Olympic team for Paris. After Fiji Tomysha competed in 3 competitions in Europe trying to improve on her long jump personal best. Unfortunately she encountered bad weather and some illness and couldn’t improve on her personal best.

Tomysha has indicated she has learnt so much from competing against some of the best long jumpers in the world and is already looking to build on this to fulfill her dream of representing Australia at the highest level of competition. IRWA has had a very successful season across all summer events and cross country championships.

Illawong holds weekly cross country on Saturday afternoons starting at 2pm at various courses around our local area. We have 2km, 3km, 5km and 10km races available each week.

BOWLS – LAWN (MENS)

Liaison Director: David Raper

Revesby Workers Bowling Club Hosted the Metro South West Region Ladies Senior Pairs in July and August. New season Kicks off with Minor and Major Pairs championships for current financial members. The Metro South West Region Pairs and Fours Championships will be played over the next 2 months.

Revesby Workers Bowling Club are looking to explore unification of the Men’s and Ladies clubs. We are also after new bowlers that can be drawn from current members of Revesby Workers Club. Lawn Bowls is a highly competitive sport and is more difficult than it looks. There are only two areas to perfect e.g. line and length. However, to combine these two areas together is extremely difficult. It's also a very strategic game that requires a lot of thought and predicting what the other team will play and then counteract that strategy. It has many health benefits including low impact exercise. RWC members that we are looking to try a game at Spence St are competitive players who can no longer play their chosen first preference sport due to injury, age, etc.

Revesby Workers Bowling Club plays social bowls on a Wednesday (names in by 12pm, bowls starts at 1pm), Thursday Ladies morning starts at 9.30am. We also play Saturday Social bowls for those who work, again names in by midday with bowls starting at 1pm.

During Summertime, we also play a relaxing game of Twilight Bowls, names in by 4.20 and bowls starts at 5pm finishing no later than 7 pm to accommodate the Bill Bullard Charity meat tray Raffle. It's a terrific learning opportunity for new bowlers and was well supported during the 2024 Summertime season.

There is a reasonably small fee per game ($12 socials to $15 for Twilight).

Please come down and give it a go... it is very addictive!

We were finally able to hold the 2022-23 and 2023-24 Senior Presentations in late June. With all the renovations underway at the Club, we held the Presentations in Element, with a great three-course dinner.

For the 2022-23 season Chris Caccamo took out the President’s Award with batting of

509 runs at an average of 72.71 and taking 18 wickets at an average of 23.72 runs, achieved in 2nd Grade. The Vice President’s Batting Award was awarded to Alan Willmore hitting 648 runs at an average of 64.80 runs in 6th Grade, and the winner of the Keith Heaslip Bowling Award was Troy Shean who took 26 Wickets at an average of 13.92 runs in 2nd Grade. For the 2023-24 season Ryan Guthrie took out the President’s Award with batting of 377 runs at an average of 34.27 and taking 10 wickets at an average of 21.60 run in 1st Grade. The Vice President’s Batting Award was awarded to Warren Habak hitting 650 runs at an average of 65.00 runs in 7th Grade and the winner of the Keith Heaslip Bowling Award was Mohammad Chokr who took 29 Wickets at an average of 12.41 runs in 5th Grade.

Great results, and congratulations to all the Award winners.

We have a team playing in the Winter Masters Cup at present. Unfortunately, the weather has not been kind to the players, with many ground closures. The competition will finish in August ahead of the summer competition. We will start signing on for the next summer competition from 1 July on-line – just visit the “Play Cricket“ site and enter your postcode –Revesby Workers Cricket Club will be one of your options, which I hope you choose! It is compulsory to register on-line and we encourage all seniors to be members of Revesby Workers’ Club.

For any enquiries, please contact Chris on 9773 7157. We look forward to an enjoyable 2024 – 25 season.

DARTS CLUB

2024 is off to a good start, we have had a few good events so far and got a few coming up soon, starting with our annual darts day with Revesby Workers verse Wattle Grove Hotel Darts Club held at Revesby in the Rogues Sports Bar. Not long after that Revesby will do the bus trek to Newcastle to play our annual darts event that has been going on for 55 years. We will be trying to retain the A grade, B grade and the coveted guzzlers cup which Revesby has after a solid 2023 campaign.

Our club championships are coming up later in the year and the singles championship will be held on Sunday 8th September and the doubles championships will be held on Sunday 13th October, and our next meeting will be Sunday 8th September and we will be holding our championships after the meeting concludes.

Our Thursday night social darts is going well with good numbers. Jun Park hit a 180 at

social darts on 27/6 well done to him he is becoming quite the regular on Thursdays and playing quite well. Thursday social darts is a fun night and visitors and new darties are more than welcome to join in on the fun, doesn’t matter if you’re a seasonal veteran or just starting out. The night is run on a drawn doubles format with a 6-game round robin, which we have prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, highest scores and a highest peg prize which is kindly donated every week by one of our members Craig Barton and his Fix-It-Glass team.

Presentation date and end of year events will be confirmed later in the year, but we look forward to seeing you all on the oche line soon.

GARDEN CLUB

Liaison Director: Christine Butters Winter has arrived with its colourful camellias and other winter blooms!

Catherine continues to present us with her monthly research on the flowers of the month. She covers flowers of the western hemisphere and also our very own natives.

A change in format now sees our guest speakers start during the first part of each monthly meeting.

Our June speaker was Colin Hollis from the Rose Society of NSW. He augmented his talk with a very practical and most helpful Question and Answer segment.

Bruce Elder is a travel writer, journalist and commentator. He gave a talk on Aussie towns last July.

We have a very interesting lineup of speakers for the following months. For August we have invited Julie Evans from the Sydney Harbour Trust, who will give a talk on Cockatoo Island. The site was opened to the public in 2007 after restoration by the Trust.

Our September guest speaker will be Helen Etheridge from the Stroke Foundation. This is a national charity that works with the community to prevent stroke, save lives and enhance the recovery of stroke victims.

October’s guest speaker will be Paul Kearney who will cover the History of 50s Music. Apart from music, he also has various interests, having worked as a chef and a manager as well.

November’s speaker, Peter Hey, will discuss clivias. He appeared on Gardening Australia on their 14th June 2024 TV show where he was called King of Clivias. Clivias are very hardy and produce a wide variety of beautifully coloured blooms.

We are hoping to have a Spring Coach Tour towards the end of this year. Our Autumn Coach Tour to the Wollongong Botanic Garden last May had to be cancelled due to lack of numbers.

Membership is open to gardeners and nongardeners alike. Guests are always welcome! We meet on the first Saturday of the month (except December and January) at the Lawson Room (while upper floor renovations are going on) from 9.30 am. Meetings start at 10 am sharp till 12 noon. We have a plant sales table, raffles and monthly plant and flower competitions. For more information, refer to our website rwcgarden.com

GOLF (MENS’)

The club was formed in 1961 and is a thriving sub-club of the Revesby Workers Club. The golf club currently has more than 50 members and is run by a very dedicated group of elected officers. For further information, please visit our informative website www.rwcmensgolf.org.

We are now at the halfway mark for the year and so far, it has been smooth sailing for the club.

In April, the club staged its first major championship of the year being the 2 Ball Best Ball Championship, which was played over 2 rounds at Camden Lakeside GC and Links Shell Cove GC. The 2024 campions were the team of Claude Poletti and Steve Vaughn with an aggregate total of 93 points. Claude had a memorable round of 49 points on his own which went a long wat to ensuring their victory. The runners up were John Varrica and John McDonald with 88 points.

On May 17, 36 members travelled to the Hunter Valley for our annual tour championship to be played over 3 rounds at The Vintage GC and Cypress Lakes Resort. The going was a bit tough due to the wet conditions on day one at The Vintage but improved dramatically at Cypress Lakes for the remaining two rounds. Everyone had a great time as usual, and the resort was amazing.

The Hunter Valley Tour Champion was Manny Petris with an aggregate score of 100 points. Congratulations Manny on a wellplayed tournament.

There are too many regular club event details to document but they are available on our website if anyone is interested.

In the coming months we will be conducting the 4BBB Club Championship and in august we will be travelling to Goulburn for part 2 of our annual challenge against Goulburn Workers Club.

In October, we will be hosting this year’s Merv Pell Cup and Lawson Cup against Blacktown Workers Club and Cabramatta Leagues Club. This will involve our committee to organise golf at Cabramatta Golf Club for 54 players and this will be

followed by a presentation lunch to be held at Revesby Workers Club. These two events have been running for over 50 years and Club Revesby is going for a threepeat this year. Wish us luck.

Until next time, keep swinging and keep happy.

LThis year the Hockey Ladies moved to the MSW Competition and have hit the ground running! We are currently sitting in the top 4 with our eyes firmly set on being there on Grand Final Day. The Committee are pretty proud of how the team have handled themselves in the new competition.

The midyear sees a number of our Masters Ladies playing at the state championships held in Moorebank in July. Good luck ladies.

We have one of our Masters Carnival team members, Nikkers, play at the Masters Women’s National Championships for NSW, congratulations on your well-deserved selection. The end of year sees us celebrate our season at our annual Presentation Day, we will also be celebrating our clubs 45th birthday!

To round out the year, at the end October, we are heading back to the Central Coast for the Masters Carnival where we always have plenty of fun!

Our attention is also looking to May 2025, as we are sending two teams to compete at the World Masters Games in Taiwan. We are working hard at raising funds to help cover costs for things like uniforms. We last competed at the WMG in 2017 when it was held in Auckland.
