We’re marching into March! And so excited to be doing so! I’ve got so many things to tell you and I can’t wait any longer. So with no further ado: Tasting New York, our 1st Annual Food Festival is almost here! We are working with Toshi of Flatiron Hotel to produce an event that won’t be easily forgotten. day of good eats, good drinks, good company, and good times! Ernie Anastos is the master of ceremonies and Claire Thomas will be presenting a special food demonstration.

Speaking of Claire Thomas, she is our cover feature this month! Her name may not be well known to you, but I’m sure it’s a name you’ll hear more and more frequently. A native of LA, creator of the successful blog, Kitchy Kitchen, and host of Food for Thought (produced by Litton Entertainment; airing on ABC on the weekends), she has already accomplished much at a young age. We sat down and spoke of how she got into the business, her passions and what’s next for her. I know you are going to love the piece!

Claire Thomas: Sugar, Spice & Everything Nice

Claire Thomas is not a name you may know, but it’s one you should. And it’s likely that in the near future it is one you may hear often.

Creator of the successful food blog, Kitchy Kitchen and host of the new hit show, Food for Thought with Claire Thomas (produced

by Litton Entertainment and airing on ABC on the weekends; check your local listings), Ms. Thomas has been on a roll.

We are very happy to introduce you to her and ecstatic to announce her as our special guest at our Food Festival on March 24 at fascinating as I do; come out to meet her in person at Tasting New York. For tickets: Resident: Tell me a little about yourself.

Claire Thomas: I was born and raised in LA and grew up very much a California girl - I don’t look it since I’m pale and a redhead – but I have always been surrounded by delicious, wonderful food.

My mother and aunt are amazing cooks and we just grew up eating really wonderful California cuisine. I wouldn’t say my mom was a super creative cook, she would just draw from a Betty Crocker or Martha Stewart recipe, but I always really enjoyed it.

I never felt like I really needed to be in the kitchen because it always felt like I was taking up space when my mom was in there – and why bother when your mom and aunt are such great cooks!

commercial director and owns a production company, so I’ve been a Production Assistant since I was 12 years old. I did everything from to doing runs to Burbank to pick things up making and advertising.

When I was in high school I thought I wanted to be a director. The more I thought about it, the sillier it sounded because it’s so hard to break into. I ended up being interested in development work since I love storytelling and working with directors. I worked a few jobs in college and after I graduated I got producers. Unfortunately, I thought they wanted a story editor, but they more wanted a secretary. They were really nice guys but the job was quite boring and being there from 9am-8pm really drained me creatively.

My mom saw this and told me I should to it was right around this point when I started baking my feelings!

After a long day of being frustrated or annoyed, I would start tinkering around in the kitchen. I got very much into food history play around, and I started baking stuff and a food blog – which is hilarious since I still have to help my mom put attachments to emails, so I have no idea how she knew what a food blog was!

I started Kitchy Kitchen. Not understanding how the Internet really worked, I had assumed that there would be an audience three months I started picking up the camera and started to shoot food, still deciding what kind of food this blog was going to be about.

I decided that this was going to be about original recipes as well as my photography because I knew that if I was going to put something out there it was going to be about something new and truly original. I do love restaurants and I do love chefs, but I’m not into restaurant gossip, which is big in LA, so I thought that I would focus on my goofy stuff that I found really interesting. The blog all of a sudden started getting really popular because of my photography and I was able to get a job as an assistant food stylist on different shoots. Soon after I started work as a food photographer. Meanwhile, I picked up any odd job I could possibly get in food, so while I was a food photographer I became also a personal chef for some families in the entertainment industry, I was a hostess – I did whatever I could to make a buck. That kept me busy, but as I kept working on the blog I decided to create some cool food videos.

They began as interviewing people or talking to the camera while doing different recipes.

One day a good friend came over with an HD camera that could shoot live action the from there. Before the DSLRs, the only real options to shoot food the way I wanted to

shoot was to use something like a wedge, which, unless you’re a very professional photographer, that’s a very expensive camera to rent.

I taught my friend how to shoot food the way I wanted to shoot food, so we posted that video and it became my calling card very shortly after. I started shooting food the way I saw commercials do it, in short, to the point, 30-45 second intervals. Since I’m not a trained chef, I thought that if I could take a recipe and show people how to make it in under a minute, it’s going to make me want to make it regardless of skill level. If you can be taught it in

under a minute, there’s a good chance you will want to do it. I liked the idea that even for people who weren’t going to make the food it was entertaining, it was a quick bite, and and watch a boring demo. You could watch something with beautiful visuals, fun music and cool graphics. You don’t have to listen to anyone explain it to you – you just watch and enjoy it.

In the last 10 years there’s been a big change; the mainstream has become very interested in food and you can see it on the Food Network and all these different YouTube channels, Pitnerest food blogs and the like.

It makes the consumer want to see food in a way that feels natural, organic, fresh and accessible, like something they would see in their own kitchen. And that’s how I shot food.

R: Tell me more about the show.

CT: The show’s fantastic! It’s really exciting for me because the show and my blog are so very different, and it allows me to get back to the basics. I get to focus on foods that are really delicious, simple, and yet fun to cook.

My blog was initially very regional, about a foodie who lives in LA, and because this show speaks to a national audience I needed to connect with everybody and try to let everybody feel like they can make the food and be a part of the experience. cool for me to take over the Facebook page.

Since then I have been on the Facebook page every single weekend, every Saturday morning, responding to questions and connecting with fans. I remember when we - I couldn’t believe 100 people were watching my show! And now we have over 26,000 fans on Fa c e b o o k and it’s amazing

to see this community growing and I’m able to relate to people and their families from anywhere in the world. The fact that every weekend they would watch me with their family and let me be part of their week in that way is so special. It’s a very emotional thing for me that people are trying and liking my recipes since they are so personal. I’m always asking people about how my recipes turned out and to get them to take a photo because it’s so exciting when a family posts something they cooked of my recipes and post it to the Facebook page! It makes my heart skip a beat.

R: How do you compare the food and restaurant scene here in contrast with LA? CT: I love New York! I get to go about four times a year and this past year I spent a month in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I rented a little the majority of my cookbook out of a small apartment in Williamsburg, than everyone can make these recipes! And I was just using Ikea equipment that any 20-something would have in their apartment.

I love New York food, but it’s very different than LA food. I think that New York has this history and there’s a level of expectation that comes with New York. There’s a certain way that you see things done. There are so many good restaurants that come from this rich history and culture, like Sauce on Rivington Street, which is very new, but it feels like its been there for 100 years. I don’t think you would have that experience in LA. New York food is a slightly different palette; you can

tell that it’s food that exists in weather. You can tell that there’s a fall, there’s a winter, a spring and summer, whereas in LA it’s the land of perpetual summer.

There are lots of fresh greens, lots of fresh cultural references. In New York there’s a heavier palette, richness, and you know that if there’s a way to be over indulgent they’ll go for it and it will be so fun and so fabulous.

Eating in New York is one of my favorite things to do – well, eating in general is my favorite thing to do – but LA and New York are different, but two sides of the same coin.

The coin being delicious food, of course.

R: If there was one misnomer about being a home cook, what is it?

CT: It’s probably that you can’t cook exciting cooked meal means a crock-pot has been and salt rather than with fresh herbs, spices me, I love “homey” food. My mom’s chicken potpie is absolutely delicious. But I love making food that I like to eat without having to go out every night. I like making exciting hadn’t thought of before. For me, its all about going to the farmers market, getting what’s in season, talking to the farmers about their best it can be. Never be afraid to experiment.

The nice thing about food is that it’s just food. It’s not this thing that needs to be super precious or something that you should worry

The opportunity to visit Egypt comes at a time of transition and turmoil. Kitty Pilgrim explores the ancient and modern threads that connect two very different societies.

Everyone fantasizes about at least one travel destination – a place where mystery and adventure blend with the touch of the exotic. Some people hope to visit the elaborate splendor of the Taj Mahal, or the soaring heights of Machu Picchu, the romantic lagoon of Venice, or the bohemian cafes of Montparnasse - all in the interest of experiencing a different culture, expanding horizons and learning something new.

My fantasy destination has always been Egypt. I have always wanted to contemplate the pure symmetry of the pyramids of Giza, stand awestruck over the legged across an ancient frieze in the Valley of Kings.

My obstacle to seeing these wonderful sights in situ has always been my busy schedule.

Surely that kind of travel would require weeks of vacation and months of planning.

More than I was willing to invest. So instead, hand – the superb Egyptian collection at the Metropolitan Museum and the Brooklyn Museum in New York, the British Museum in London or Edinburgh’s National Museum of Scotland. go to Egypt. The catalyst was a novel. I was in the middle of researching my book, The Stolen Chalice – a romantic thriller with an ancient Egyptian theme. As I started to write, I realized that I could not conjure up the proper images without putting myself on the scene. I needed the vibrancy of life, not the just glass cases in a museum. So tickets were bought, itineraries planned, hotels But not so fast. The so-called “Arab Spring” arrived with unexpected force - an event so sudden, it took even the foreign policy experts by surprise. As crowds were storming Tahrir Square, the U.S. State Department issued a “travel warning” urging all “non-essential travel” be postponed.

Thwarted by circumstances, I cancelled my bookings and watched the coverage on TV and the Internet. Egypt apparently was not in the cards. Yet, one year after the uprising, I reconsidered my trip. Cairo seemed quiet.

The presidential elections were planned; the political scene was, if not stable, at least in hiatus until voting could take place. Travel companies had started advertising steep discounts on tours. Perhaps this was the time to go.

Accompanied by my professional cameraman, (and son) Will Croxton, we set off for Cairo in the spring of 2012 with the intention of photographing as much as possible and researching my book.

It proved to be a wonderful time to go.

Hotels in Cairo were hard hit by the turmoil and vacancy rates were high. The lobbies In an entire week at the Four Seasons in Cairo, I did not encounter a single American and only a handful of Europeans. Service could not have been better and people were grateful for new business. I was repeatedly thanked for coming to visit. The entire hotel staff was at my disposal for any whim.

Hiring a car and driver, as well as a guide for the duration of our trip, proved very simple, and we set off to see everything we could.

Was I concerned about unrest? Certainly.

But the dynamic of the situation was in my favor. Egypt’s economy is dependent on

tourism, an industry that provides more than 2 million jobs a year and produced more than 10% of economic output. Workers in the hotel services industry have a vested interest in keeping guests protected and as safe as possible. Walking around the streets, dressed conservatively, accompanied by my police or passers-by would ask our guide who we were. He’d reply, “They are special visitors, who have come to see our country and understand our culture.” At that suave and diplomatic reply, we were often politely invited into places that were normally closed to most tour groups.

Most astonishingly, at the highest panorama in Cairo, the Great Mosque of Mohammed Ali, we were invited to remain inside during the call to prayer – Will was urged to stand in the central portion of the towering space beside the ranks of men, myself invited to sit with other women behind the green curtain.

My journey also took be back several millennia. I traveled to the ancient city of Saqqara where the oldest pyramid still stands, shored up by scaffolding. We descended into subterranean tombs, the walls covered with beautiful carvings. We rode camels out into the desert, and understood the pace of ancient times, which has its own rhythm – that of the soft padding of a camel on shifting sand. We went to old markets and souks, and ate exotic foods, drank strong tea and sampled sweet puffy breads that were carried by bicyclists who rode through the streets balancing the trays on their heads.

How interesting that the same real-time communication technology that brought me images of Tahrir square during revolution, was now showing a live opera performance at the Met to the citizens of Cairo. How little we anticipate the cross-cultural effects of our modern communications.

During intermission the people sitting next to me introduced themselves and we had a satisfying exchange of ideas. They were curious about what was happening in New York and I took the opportunity to inquire about the changing political climate in Egypt.

And in the royal mummy chamber, the recently discovered remains of a woman believed to be Queen Hatshepsut, once the most powerful female ruler in the world, lay silent and diminutive in death.

Returning that night in the taxi I looked out at the sleeping city of Cairo. I was glad I had come. I had learned so much about the beauty of Egypt’s ancient culture. But the insights into its modern society were every bit as valuable.

E x o t i c Marrakech with its eclectic mixture of modern and ancient, desert and city, Arab, African and European, has always attracted savvy honeymooners and jet setters. Now, with an unprecedented boom in the luxury building market, there’s even more reason to journey to (Moroccan residences or palaces with garden courtyards) are popping up, vying against each other and perennial favorites for the title of most fabulous. It’s fashionable to buy a riad and have it renovated into a vacation getaway for yourself, friends and paying guests. This makes an impressive array of design, décor and amenity options amid the utmost luxury. The wave of artists, designers and tastemakers with swanky riads make it fun and fascinating to riad hop, or at least dine or cocktail at a few.

A pink walled medina, historic ‘old city’, lively Djemma El Fna Square, a huge vibrant souk perfect for indulgent retail therapy, tasty tagines, a cultural biennale attracting eminent international artists and swanky riads with pools and spas - Marrakech may be the chicest place on the planet.

Djemaa El Fna Square, the heart of life in the medina, has been designated a Unesco World Heritage Site.

It comes alive at sunset. Acrobats, astrologers, magicians, jugglers, snake charmers, henna artists, Gnaoua musicians with drums, castanets and ginbis (3 stringed banjoes) storytellers, and potion sellers chanting cures for arthritis and broken hearts, perform in the open air extravaganza. You can get up close and personal with the entertainers, which I prefer. Or you can watch the non-stop action of the street theater from a terrace at one of the many ringside cafés such as Café de France. Check out the famous food stalls for soups, snails, couscous, tagines ( stews ) and barbecue goat and lamb smoking on the grillades. Water sellers in fringed hats drag heavy metal dispensers around the plaza. Forget Ringling Brothers, this is the greatest show on earth.

Behind the bustling square colorful souks specialize in a variety of goods and trades. Tourists and locals wander from stall to stall, buying olives, nuts, dates, freshly squeezed orange juice, incense, cosmetics, pungent spices and ingredients for spells. Following the labyrinthine alleyways and tunnel-like streets, a fantastic world unfolds of beautiful rugs, kaftans, lamps, stunning antiques, jewelry, pottery, leather belts, handbags, instrument makers, designer clothing and beautifully embroidered slippers (babouches).

Beware of mopeds and donkey drawn carts passing.

My preferred mode of travel is the legendary caleche – horse drawn carriages with horns and bells. Enjoy the shopping wonderland, but don’t forget to haggle.

It’s expected. I recommend a savvy guide who knows the au courant souk shops.

Beyond the hoopla and chaos of the square and the souks lies the world of the cool, calm luxury riads.

Lolling by the pool in the afternoon and receiving royal treatment at the spas and hammams is de rigueur at these oases of relaxation and pampering.

A class in its own, The Royal Mansour, built by King Mohammed VI just over two years ago to showcase Fifteen hundred workers spent over three and a half years creating this palatial masterpiece. Minutes from the main square, the design replicates a classical medina with Moorish gardens, courtyards, fountains designed riads with exquisite artisanal work, boast antiques, posh fabrics, bespoke furnishings, art and roof terraces with plunge pools. It was hard to leave my riad; I loved languishing in my posh palace.

Close by is charming Villa Des Orangers, where owners with lush fabrics, furnishings and pillow cases embroidered with gold thread. This Relais & Chateaux Riad features spacious rooms whose roof top terraces have views of the Atlas Mountains. After a dip in the pool and a visit to the spa, I feasted on mouth-watering Mediterranean-Moroccan fare in the cozy candlelit restaurant. For those who want to be in the busy medina where the action is, this trendy riad features seven plush suites with luxurious Moroccan décor, butler service, spa and a rooftop restaurant with the best lamb tagine I had in Marrakech. www.riadjoya.com A highlight was my lunch at Jnane Tamsna located in the exclusive serene date grove and olive tree Palmeraie area, twenty minutes by car from the medina. The stylish twenty four bedroom luxury sanctuary with Moroccan décor and stunning antiques is owned by esteemed interior designer and Grande Dame of Marrakech Meryanne Loum Martin, known for her house party gatherings and salons. Guests enjoy swimming pools, tennis courts, and a vegetable and herb garden – used for meals. A favorite of celebrities, like Giorgio Armani, Brad Pitt, Donna Karan and David Bowie, you never know who will be at your dining table.

It was here that I met Italian Princess Letizia Ruspoli, who owns an elegant, contemporary riad, Dar Seven, in the medina. I also met Vanessa Branson (sister of Richard) who owns Riad El Fenn in the medina, with suites with private pools and an amazing art collection. They told me about Le Salama near the main square, where everyone from Paloma Picasso to Roberto Cavalli dined, Sidi Ghanem, the new hip shopping area, 33 Rue Majorelle, boutique for the best of the best, and The Lotus Club, a cheeky burlesque club. Vanessa is also the founder of the Marrakech Biennale art festival, which attracts

GALAPAGOS AT ITS BEST

Ah:

life on the steamy equator. In Guayaquil on my way to the Galapagos, we were bombarded by condoms in the check out lines, potions for el sexo in the pharmacias and diapers for sale everywhere around the Hotel Oro Verde, the best hotel in the heart of town. In the Galapagos, on the Ecoventura ten-cabin yacht we cruised, we described the barnacles on Frigate Rock as having disproportionately huge male organs.

Maybe we glazed over a little more than most when listening to nature lectures about the wind and sea currents that cause the two main seasons in the Galapagos: hot and warm; or the migration/adaptation habits that created the species varieties that drove Darwin to distraction. But, we never tired of hearing about the courtship and mating habits of the the exotic birds, iguanas, tortoises and sea lions who invited us into their homes.

Here, then, is our takeaway from the Ecoventura nature guides!

THE BLUE FOOTED BOOBY DANCE:

“I’m too sexy for my feet,” the Blue Footed Boobies seem to be singing as the do their courtship “dance.» They lift one and then the other maturity. Isn›t that what we look for when we want to settle down? Boobies share baby duties, so this is important. Extra points for Boobies water shoes kept exclaiming. Her girlfriend winced. They were from Portland. Enough said.

Only on one Island, Espanola, are there monogamous hawks. Possibly, we wondered, since Espanola was formed before the other islands, their hawks are older and more traditional? Fueled by Chilean wine one night on the Ecoventura, a girl confessed her boyfriend of three years had adopted an openly “polyandrous lifestyle” when they broke up.

LONESOME GEORGE, ON THE OTHER HAND, COULDN’T RISE TO THE OCCASION:

Poor Lonesome George: seemingly the only animal not doing it in the Galapagos. He was the last male Pinta Island tortoise. But, he just didn’t know what to do with the ladies. The Darwin Institute actually put a 21 inch TV, showing tortoises humping, into his pen. The tortoise porn didn’t work. Scientists started looking around the world and found a more studly Galapagos Tortoise in the San Diego Zoo.

CORONADO, CALIFORNIA’S CROWN JEWEL

We experienced a feeling of escape from New York upon reaching Coronado, the beautiful beach town a bridge away from San Diego.

Despite locals calling it Coronado Island, Coronado has been a peninsula for the last 30 years. Spanish for “the crowned one,” it has a semi-arid climate and a population of 26,000.

One sunny afternoon, we dined under a gazebo at Current restaurant in the Coronado Island Marriott Resort & Spa. The Grilled New York strip steak was unusually soft and succulent. Chef Frank Sanchez explained, "It is sliced against the grain, creating an easier way to tear it apart and chew."

We upped the relaxation factor while swimming in the heated pool and enjoying the hot tub at the Loews Coronado Bay Resort. The grounds and lobby exude a lightand-airy, tropical feel. Signature restaurant Mistral—our favorite on island—offers Mediterranean cuisine and sweeping ocean views.

Its chef, Patrick Ponsaty, has become the 51st “Master French Chef ” in the U.S. His Santa Barbara Blue Prawn with ricottapresentation was elegant and understated.

Another night, the Coronado Brewing Company served up cheer. We were intrigued with the vat of Blue Ridge Coffee Stout in the backyard brewery. The Ale House black-farm

The most memorable part of the trip was bike riding along the coast from the Marriott to the Stephen Clayton Gallery, located at the Coronado Ferry Landing. We viewed the colorful exhibit, “The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss,” paintings for adults that were released posthumously. “Surly Cat Being Ejected,” an example of surrealism, features a topless woman and a distraught feline. The work is reminiscent of Edvard Munch’s “The Scream.”

Meeting with photographer, Dan McGeorge, was another special experience. He masterfully captures vibrant nature scenes using dramatic exposures.

Sitting down with us to discuss her new book, Living Desert, was entirely pleasurable. Not only is she an immensely talented photographer, but a wonderful person. I hope you enjoy the piece as much as I enjoyed interviewing her!

Resident: How photography?

Dana Buckley: I went to a boarding school for high school and they had an emphasis on the arts, but I didn’t like the way I drew. My father had a roller-cord camera and I picked up the camera and started taking pictures. it’s been so long!

R: Where are you originally from?

DB: I’m a born and raised New Yorker! I grew up in the city and went to boarding school for 11th and 12th grade – and that’s when all the photography began.

R: What is your work known for if you had to describe it yourself ?

DB: Well, I know at this point for my nature photography. I was in a commercial world for 25 years and my expertise was in children’s photography. So I did advertising and children were my specialty. In the commercial world that’s what I’m known for.

But side projects and photography are things that I’ve always done, kind of paralleling my commercial growth. I decided now that move away from commercial. I had a gallery in New York at the Howard Greenburg gallery, so my focus is really on my personal expression at this point, where it’s just the camera and me. After many years of slaving away, it’s a wonderful place to get to.

R: Tell me the difference between commercial photography and art photography. Also tell me the impetus on the desert book.

DB: The difference between art and commercial photography is that when you’re doing commercial work, it’s a collaboration with a group of people. Ultimately they’re looking for you to express through your vision what they need to sell. You have to follow directions and there are certain restrictions and desires, and you have to take that information and create a product.

It’s really about - in my case of advertising - about selling a product.

DB:

In the personal work – well, to get the commercial work they looked at my more personal work with kids – you don’t always end up doing 100% what you want to do.

You have to listen to what they want and make them happy. In my personal work I don’t have to do that! Generally, when I start on a project, it’s a series of pictures about something that moves me. Something will give me a message that this is what I’m supposed to be doing right now. In the case of my desert book, I was going down to Palm Beach, Florida, to do talk on Photography For Collectors and I had to bring down a body of my work. At that time all I had was

sudden I had to learn this new medium. I like digital for color, but I’m not quite convinced on it for black & white. I still feel like black

I obviously needed to show them something relevant, as the industry was changing to digital, so I photographed a picture of some cactus when I was out in California. So I have one picture that was a digital picture, and the other of about thirty were primarily in black and white. I then I ran into one of these collectors and he referred to me as “The Cactus Photographer.” I was little shocked! But I thought, maybe I should go

I think we operate a little faster than the average person. We’re always moving, doing, and accomplishing something. I feel the best when I’m accomplishing something and I’m much happier when on the move, doing things and exploring new venues.

I have always bee drawn to the desert. In ways I believe it’s reminiscent of the city, in that the dry desert is like pavement, the mountains like skyscrapers. Clearly this is an abstract vision, translating a cityscape to a desert, but there is a similarity.

So I went down to California and started taking pictures of the different desert life and I found it so amazing that under these

DB: You get spoiled here because you can get anything at any time – quickly – that you want. There’s pretty much the best of

Once this started happening and began photographing places where cacti or different desert life actually had plaques so I knew what I was photographing.! The book is a combination of those two things. It was a truly enriching experience.

R: In the book you mention that you mostly transition to digital?

Manilow on Broadway, Dusty Off-Broadway

anilow on Broadway, at the St. James Theatre, is a fun evening hanging out with a few hundred lost friends from youth and an eminently youthful looking balladeer. The Brooklyn native croons and chats, showing pictures of his Williamsburg childhood, album covers from the 70s, In the course of 110 minutes and three quick changes, Manilow does more than sing standards (and a few jingles, to show his roots just as much as a long lost tape of his grandfather trying to prompt the toddler to sing). He takes the audience on a journey back to misspent youth, singing at concerts, dancing in aisles and – at least on the night that I was there – declarations of love shouted out from both women and men, which he returned with self-effacing charm and mock horror.

As hilarious as this was, the absolute line of the night I attended was “I was the Justin Bieber of the 1970s, really.” This brought the house down, just audience was recovering from Manilow’s woebegone comments about his hair on one of his album covers.

Manilow’s endearing presence and commentary are interspersed with songs ranging from Mandy to I Made It Through the Rain to I Can’t Smile without You (though I admit the smiley face image, circa 1970-something, may have been a tad much, even for die-hard Fanilows).

Background vocalists Kye Brackett and Sharon Hendrix sing, dance and make the

man who writes the songs look good while he makes the music.

If Manilow on Broadway is a visit to a pleasant past with a slight Nick at Night feel (rather than an MTV one), then Forever Dusty is like a sad Lifetime for Women Special. Kirsten Holly Smith stars as the one-time Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O’Brien, a shy Catholic schoolgirl who is partially goaded into becoming a backup singer for a local group by a brother whom she soon outshines as she goes on to become Dusty the group her brother founded). A frequent family story, but this one adds the element of groundbreaking Motown meets Brixton (which the play does not explain would have been an almost completely Afro-Caribbean enclave of London at during the 50s and 60s, notwithstanding Dusty’s peaches and cream complexion and blond locks).

Smith, who also wrote the book (with Jonathan Vankin) for Forever Dusty, has a tremendous voice, as do her co-stars, especially Christina Sajous as Dusty’s lover, Claire. This prompts the unlikely critique that sound designer Matt Kraus might want to dial it down a notch to let the stars shine in the off-Broadway house at New World Stages.

Resident: Where did you grow up?

Hunter Herdlicka: I grew up in Dallas, Texas. Actually it was Plano, but close enough. My family moved all over: New York, in Texas. I graduated from Plano West Senior High School in 2005.

R: When did you come to New York? How do you like it compared to your hometown?

HH: I moved to New York City the day I graduated college in May of 2009. It was that which was for the musical I would later make my Broadway debut in, playing Henrik Egerman in Stephen Sondheim’s “A Little Night Music,” playing opposite Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury, followed by Bernadette Peters and Elaine Stritch. New York was certainly louder, faster, but not funnier than visited in the 2nd grade.

R: How did you get into musical theater?

HH: a church production in Seattle. All I remember about the show was walking down the aisle with a large, living sheep and waving to everyone I knew (or didn’t know) in the audience. That’s - the Broadway production of Cats, directed by Sir Trevor Nunn, who would later become my R: What have you starred in?

HH: Aside from starring on Broadway for nearly two years, I’ve had leading roles around a new production of The “Tempest” at Dallas Theater Center and a production that ended in December of the Broadway musical “Something’s Afoot” at the historic Goodspeed Opera House. I recently debuted a new solo cabaret at the Austin Cabaret Theatre in Texas for a sold out engagement in January, and am excited to announce that the show will be playing at New York’s hottest new cabaret club, 54 Below, on March 25th. I’m really very proud of the show and couldn’t be more excited about it. It’s very funny and touching as I tell stories from growing up in Texas to moving to New York and meeting my idol, Stephen Sondheim; the show also features music from esteemed composers and lyricists such as: Porter, Jerry Herman, Comden and Green, among others.

R: Favorite role you haven’t been in yet?

HH: I just saw a wonderful play in London called “The Judas Kiss” by David Hare. I wouldn’t mind being in that at all. Or “The Goat” by Edward Albee. “Sweeney Todd” is also amazing Anything Shakespeare. I could go on and on.

R: Favorite people you’ve worked with?

HH: Elaine Stritch, Bernadette Peters and Hugh Jackman. David Hyde Pierce is great to work with! I’m so blessed I’ve gotten to do so much at such a young age and I am so thankful that I am constantly surrounded by these wonderful artists who have been such idols, and now mentors, to me.

R: What part of the city do you live in? What do you like about it?

HH: I live in the center of the Theatre District...Hell’s Kitchen. I recently moved into an awesome new apartment with a large, outdoor patio and garden, imagine! Needless to say, I haven’t been able to enjoy it in this cold weather, but I’m very excited about spring. I can’t imagine living anywhere else; I love the noise, the hustle and bustle, and let’s face it, the convenience of this crazy neighborhood.

R: Any charities that you’re involved with?

HH: concerts for various charities i.e. The Actors Fund, Broadway Barks, Broadway Cares and the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative.

By Kayla Baken Alex Donner has inherited Lester Lanin’s title as America’s top society bandleader.

During his illustrious 25-year career as an entertainer, he has performed with his orchestra for President George W. Bush, the Queen of Sweden, Donald Trump, Tony Bennett, Harry Belafonte, Itzhak Perlman, and the Rockefeller and Roosevelt families. Donner has come a long way in 25 years, having headlined at the Café Carlyle, The Algonquin’s Oak Room, and Club El Morocco, where the Vanderbilts and Hearsts mingled with Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, and Ethel Merman. Just as intriguing as his accomplishments is the path that led him there. No stranger to high society, Alex grew up on Fifth Avenue in New York City and attended Princeton University.

Following college, he went on to Fordham Law School and became a divorce lawyer.

His passion for performing, however, was never lost. “I was doing divorces during the week and playing weddings on the weekend with the band,” he explains. This unusual

professional combination generated lifestyle stories in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal and his business boomed. signed on as a client. “Whenever there was live music to be played there I got the call because the owners, Ian Schrager and Steve Rubell knew I loved to perform.”

This exposure led him to sing at even more mitzvahs and garnered him opportunities to play parties for celebrities, including Mick Jagger, Andy Warhol, Truman Capote and Halston, an accomplishment most rising artists can only dream of.

When asked about his “big break,” surprisingly, singing for Sinatra or Jagger wasn’t it. He gained international recognition after performing at a lavish second-time-around wedding in India for a former divorce client who happened to be a famous oil heiress. A Moveable Feast: Palm Beach Food & Wine Festival F

ive food trucks competing on the back nine of a golf course ... Is this the setup for a joke? No, it really happened at the sixth-annual Palm Beach Food & Wine Festival.

Country Club painted a dramatic backdrop for the opening event, “Food Truck: Impossible.”

Food Network star, Robert Irvine, revealed chefs who began drumming up their dishes.

Meanwhile, he played in the Golf Digest Celebrity Chef Golf Cup with the other judges.

At 5:30 p.m., Irvine announced the winner to the satiated crowd. Curbside Gourmet took the prize with lemongrass-Asian steak tacos, avocado, cilantro-lime slaw and mint cucumber. This was paired with heirloom tomato salad, Argentine steak, rocket lettuce and beer-battered shallots with basil vinaigrette.

The following day, we were off to Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach for “Burgers by the Beach.” Brinkman grills packed Champagne comprised the scene on the oceanside patio.

The second course was prepared by Le Cirque alumnus, Daniel Boulud, who anchored the legendary New York eatery for six years. His crispy paupiette sea bass with Barolo sauce was prepared to perfection — the skin and sauce were divine.

Pamela Fiore, co-author with Maccioni of A Table at Le Cirque: Stories and Recipes from New York's Most Legendary Restaurant, stated at the podium, “When Daniel was the chef, it was the strongest kitchen in New York. Sirio hired people like Daniel and ignited their careers!”

Three superb courses later, another alumnus, Chef David Burke (David Burke Townhouse, New York) seduced everyone with his dessert — butterscotch panna cotta with crunchy curry and cocoa meringue.

The following morning we participated in Ferrari’s “Ride and Drive.” It was fun commanding a limited edition, silver Ferrari FF — one of ten built exclusively for the Neiman Marcus Christmas Book. Although the $400,000 masterpiece soars from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, an omnipresent Palm Beach police force quelled all temptations.

Another beautiful day, another fascinating affair — “FOOD4THOUGHT: A Farmto-Table Lunch.” Under an enormous party tent, we dined at Swank Farm in Loxahatchee, a local-restaurant supplier of organic and hydroponic vegetables, greens and herbs.

The fourth course showcased the adept talent of Chef Irvine. His braised, boneless short ribs with goat-cheese sabayon, roasted root crops, hominy hash and collard jus were succulent.

Later that night, PB Catch Seafood & Raw Bar was the scene for the “SUSTAIN” event. We were hooked by three sumptuous

The Mohegan Sun arena has a 10,000-seat capacity and is the home of the WNBA Connecticut Sun. There is the more intimate Cabaret Theatre with less than 350 seats and the 300 seat Wolf Den, in the center of the Casino of the Earth, where one can see free nightly shows. Coming with the family? In 1996 on the banks of the Thames River in Southeast Connecticut the history of Mohegan Sun began with the 180,000 square-foot Casino of the Earth. It was a tribute to the heritage of the Mohegan Tribe. The casino was circular with four entrances representing the four seasons of the year. In 2001 the Casino of the Sky opened with four quadrants representing and water. It contained the world’s largest fully functional indoor planetarium dome and added 119,000 square-feet of gaming space. In 2002 the 34-story, 1,200 room hotel tower was completed. It included the 20,000 square-foot Elemis Spa and a 10,000 square-foot indoor pool. The Casino of the Wind opened in 2008 and added 45,000 square-feet of gaming space. It symbolizes the tribe’s history and contains a 55-foot tall waterfall.

The festivities started for the 10th Annual Sun WineFest Friday night with a Bourbon tasting ($90) and the use of a cigar lounge. Saturday featured a trade and press hour, followed by the Grand Tasting ($80-repeated on Sunday-$70) with over 1,000 wines, craft beers and spirits. Both days had chef demonstrations, including Todd English, Mary Ann Esposito and Donatella Arpaia. I heard the late Saturday afternoon grape stomp was fun for both the participants and spectators. I was told that the Elite Cru Tasting, with a separate admission of $200 (including admission to the Saturday Grand Tasting), was less crowded than the Grand Tasting. Wineries poured included: Duckhorn, Terlato Wines International, Moet Hennessy USA, Gloria Ferrer and Willamette Valley Vineyards.

Approximately 10,000 people attended the two days of the Grand Tasting. Saturday night featured a Celebrity Chef Dine Around with separate food, wine and spirits stations ($185). Between the sessions there were winemakers’ seminars and book signings.

The Mohegan Sun has over 40 different restaurants, bars and lounges including: Michael Jordan’s, Todd English’s Tuscany, Bobby Flay’s Bar Americain, Ballo Italian Restaurant & Social Club and Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritville. There are 36 shops and specialty stores as well as Mohegan Sun Country Club at Pautipaug. The 18hole course is less than 30 minutes from the casino.

What was different about The Sun Winefest was the multitude of beer tables, in a separate section, up one person I did have to try one of Brooklyn Brewery’s offerings. Interspersed among the wine tables, lifestyle and restaurant (extra charge) exhibitors were several spirit exhibitors including: The Balvenie, Beam, Hendrick’s Gin, Kahlua, Sailor Jerry Rum and Reyka Vodka.

The weather forecast was for light snow so I decided not to drive but to take Amtrak to New London (2 1/2 hours) very early on Sunday morning. A casino limo picked me up and in 20 minutes I was relaxing in my room getting ready for the Sunday press and trade preview of the Grand Tasting. It was a great learning experience for me. The 11AM-Noon time also had All Things Food with Bobby Flay ($50 including a copy of his book- Burgers, Fries & Shakers). Since even I could not be in two places at once I chose the early entrance into the Grand Tasting. I sampled a Massachusetts apple ice wine from Still River and learned about the Taste of Massachusetts Wine Festival this June. Mead from the New Hampshire based Moonlight Meadery was another newcomer for me. I was charmed by the handcrafted ceramic wine charms by Dani Titterton.

A half hour after the doors opened for center, Jacuzzi and pool resting my aching feet. Refreshed, I returned to the Convention Center in time for the 9th Annual Mohegan Sun Oyster Open. The nation’s best oyster shuckers competed for a $5,000 purse. Dinner was at Ballo Italian the weekend- Bubbles and Bon Bons ($95).

I watched Yannick Passemart, Connecticut on-premise manager for Moet Hennessy USA, saber several bottles of Moet & Chandon Imperial Champagne. Three incredibly talented pastry chefs paired their desserts with Grand Marnier and Moet & Chandon Imperial Champagne. There were chairs and banquets throughout the Cabaret Theatre to sip and nibble. It was a most relaxing way to end the weekend.

Then it was a restful night, breakfast at Tuscany and a reverse limo ride back to the New London Amtrak station. The ride back was relaxing and uneventful as the predicted light snow did arrive but had no effect on my ride home. I look forward to

The blinged-out lounge, restaurant and nightclub is Jay-Z’s brainchild, along with the help of his partner, Juan Perez. The club has recently been renovated to the tune of $10 million under the direction of designer, Jeffrey Beers. It’s a dream come true for any sport lover.

This is just the beginning of the 12,000 square foot nightclub-meets-sports barmeets-lounge Mecca. In addition to the many TVs showing any and all sporting events one could wish for, there’s your basic bar food menu, incorporating baseball terms such as First Base and Dug Out, which are all very tasty and surprisingly well prepared for a nightclub. The drinks are top notch offering everything from Strawberry Martinis to the ultimate indulgence, bottle service, which will cost you a pretty penny. Prices are high but really quite standard for prices in New York City. Upstairs there are 5 VIP lounges, perfect for a private event. They feature state of the art audio/visual equipment, HD TVs, billiard tables, iPod docking stations and lounge seating.

If you try to go on a weekend night, be prepared to wait in line…big time. I much prefer to stop by during the week with friends for a few drinks and a bite.

You’ll receive better service without being cramped with other patrons. The club recently opened another location in the new Barclay Center, which has received nice reviews. Reservations at their Barclay Center location are required and can be made up to two weeks before each event.

And the term 40/40? As any baseball fan knows, it’s the term used for the exclusive achievement of attaining 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in one season.

Our prayers were answered when KTCHN opened last year. There may be some letters missing in the name but nothing is lacking in the ambience or delicious dining under executive chef Dale Schnell. There is a bustling bar in the front room and then a more spacious dining room in the back.

The tables are spaced well apart, so you can carry on an intimate conversation without the nearby diners listening in. The cuisine is labeled New American but has a Mediterranean bent, both from Southern Europe and northern Africa. The dishes are tasty and are artfully presented. Just look at the Duck Breast with broccoli rabe, cranberry bean ragout, and nicoise olive and the East Coast Oysters with leek fondue and basil caviar in warm champagne sauce.

We began our feast with the luscious Crispy Maine Lobster Risotto Cubes and the addictive Sexy Fries (which were a bit spicy and could be ordered as a side dish).

Another unique starter suggested by our knowledgeable waiter Jefferson was Braised Cherry Wood Smoked Bacon with crisp artichokes, golden polenta and blue cheese vinaigrette. For main courses, KTCHN has all the bases covered. Sea food lovers will

Black Sea Bass with gnocchi noir, green beans, crispy bacon, and poached squid in sorrel sauce. For meat eaters, there is a classic Grilled Filet Mignon (served medium rare as ordered) with wild mushroom ravioli and baby spinach in pinot noir sauce.

Vegetarians have such delectable options as Moroccan couscous with golden raisins, harissa and root vegetables. We left room for dessert: Fresh Donuts (for two) with chocolate, salted caramel & raspberry sauce, which brought back memories of beignets at the CafĂŠ du Monde in New Orleans. KTCHN is open for brunch, dinner, and late night snacks. Keep your eye open for special events, such as evenings with live music or a DJ. The show and prix have been a hit. KTCHN is worth a trip

Gowned in my burgundy Akris and matching Manolos, I headed out to celebrate the nuptials of the ‘couple of the year’. The bride, beautiful, and social, was a business associate of my boyfriend.

Warm and personable with a great sense of humor, I adored her. The groom, a handsome, outgoing, hugely successful international consultant, could not have been nicer. Together, they were the essence of cool and all anticipated a knockout bash. The lovely ceremony, written by the bride and groom, was romantic and poetic. We laughed, we cried; it was sublime. We proceeded to give well wishes to the delightful duo. Then, entering a generic looking room for the reception we were served doughy hors d’oeuvres followed by a tasteless dinner and the dullest band I ever heard. What started out as an enchanting evening quickly turned into a dud event. This was not the wedding that the fabulous couple would have wanted. What were they thinking, I wondered. Clearly, they were savvy, stylish and lived the good life? It was not surprising when I discovered that they had planned it themselves. Lesson learned: For a memorable event leave it to the experts.

I always remember the ‘wedding that could have been’ when any noteworthy occasion arises. Which brings me to my was my best friend’s combination birthday and new career celebration and I wanted it to be special. I had been hearing rave reviews about this catering company, notably that the food was superb, the service impeccable– that they were a class act.

There is an actual “Marco” at Marco Polo Ristorante.

This 29-year old haute Italian restaurant is, in fact, named after the youthful and engaging Marco Chirico (as well as the Venetian explorer, of course), son of original owner Joseph and current chef. The restaurant, located in the heart of Carroll Gardens, also has a tremendous discretion in not disclosing details).

Tables are spaced amply, but not in isolation, allowing for diners to “visit” other tables and patrons, or to have privacy. This theme is evident with the superb staff, which does not hover, yet is instinctively at the ready if a bottle of sparkling water or basket of bread needs replenishment, or if plates need to be cleared.

Ultimately, whatever the atmosphere, people go to Italian restaurants for the food and stay for the company. handmade mozzarella) is served on thin slices of tomato, and bright basil leaves, with an olive oil and balsamic reduction that leaves a memorable kick. True green brightness is in the tricolore salad, which goes beyond the traditional radicchio, endive and spicy arugula, to include tomatoes and olives in a pleasing (and healthful) mound. There is also a Bloody Mary raw bar and a variety of oysters Rockefeller and traditional baked clams. All make for great eats.

One feature that I like is that the hand made fresh pastas (made with organic eggs) are also available gluten free, which makes a whole array of dining opportunities available to some who have thought they bit into their Marco Polo made with Manila clams). However, the seafood could make even the most dedicated pasta lover look away toward salmone scotatto (seared salmon with lemon and capers) served in thick pieces with a variety of sole encrusted in potatoes) is a standout for delicate cherry tomatoes.

Desserts at Marco Polo are exceptional. The Italian ricotta cheesecake is replete with cheese and has just enough cake to make it stand on its own, proudly wearing its strawberry embellishments. The lady coffee and tea are available with, or after, dessert (a nice but not overbearingly so.

That the restaurant is encased in a lively neighborhood and a block from the subway makes it all the more convenient to Manhattan dwellers (such as the person who accompanied me on my visit), and Brooklynites.

Brooklyn’s Home Away From Home

By Bob & Sandy Nesoff Residents of Brooklyn’s Clinton Hill section nearly went into mourning in 2011 when their neighborhood café, Kush, closed its doors. It had been a gathering place for families and friends, a place to send a few hours relaxing while enjoying a good meal.

The black crepe and shiva period didn’t last long as the doors were soon opened to a smart, new eatery and community gathering spot…The Hill Café.

What had essentially been a local favorite over the years soon turned into a metropolitan destination as food lovers learned of the news eatery and the tasty food it was serving. Caravans began heading over the Brooklyn Bridge and down the wide thoroughfares of Fulton Street and Atlantic Avenue, turning off to Putnam Avenue and the Café.

Hill Café offers diners an eclectic combination of fares ranging from Mediterranean to hamburgers. In between are crab and shrimp fritters, hot chicken wings, moules (grantinee or frites) and a variety of bruchettas.

Seating provides several tables across from the bar with a bigger one near the front window. Hill Café has an offering a very relaxing experience in warm weather.

Not interested in a full meal? No problem. Tapas are offered at the bar and everything here is moderately priced.

If the atmosphere inside is cozy, the wait staff is an integral part of the ambiance. It’s not unusual for them to greet returning diners by name and many regulars have their favorites, timing their arrival so that they know who will be waiting on them.

Trying to pigeonhole Hill Café into a particular is done with a delicate touch and loses nothing in the translation.

A German Feast

recently had the pleasure of experiencing German Cuisine in a delightful establishment called Landbrot. It was such a pleasant surprise to taste authentic German dishes right here in my own backyard. I was in Germany and Austria in December of last year for the Christmas Markets and it was there that I discovered my other roots and their rich cultural traditions; food being one of them. This came as a great surprise to me having grown up in an Italian household and rarely having German food.

will understand that they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t believe any other cuisine exists, that is, for the occasional Chinese fare.) The only German food I had ever had was when 86th Street was considered Germantown and my mother felt obliged to take us there or on the few occasions that we visited the Amish Country in Pennsylvania. Having said all that you are in for a real treat if you take my suggestion and go to Landbrot in the West Village or their other location on the Lower East Side.

Considered to be a bakery bar, the menu

is actually quite large with freshly baked breads and pastries and pretzels the size and varieties you have never imagined. Their name Landbrot translates to country bread and let me tell you it truly is the real deal. I had spatzle and brats and it rivaled any I had had in Germany. The spatzle was creamy and delicate and the brats were spicy and as well and of course had a German microbrew to accompany my meal. The dessert was top shelf and I highly recommend you treat yourself and try their warm apple

strudel or their German chocolate or cheese cakes. Whatever you choose you won’t regret it; it will have been well worth the calories.

Of course what would a German Bar be without a great selection of beers and wines.

The beer is some of the best I have ever had and the wine list is very impressive with wines from Germany, Austria, Italy, France and Spain. Having tried the micro-brew had to indulge myself to some Riesling to accompany my dessert. It was outstanding

and brought me back to my trip to Germany when we sailed down the Danube River through the wine country. Oh...to be back there.

Back to New York City and Landbrot. The West Village location is a true mix of bar and bakery, very reminiscent of what one would

staying open until 2am from Thursday to Saturday.

If you are craving something different and are bored with the usual fare and enjoy a great glass of beer or wine you must give Landbrot a try. Both locations are opened for breakfast, lunch and dinner and also have an outstanding variety of coffees and teas to go with any meal. Although this establishment will pass the test of time and become one of NYC’s must picks for authentic, delicious meals one can have in this great city of ours.

But Twitter slyly lured me to it, very much like the Entenmann’s display at the end of the aisle in The Food Emporium.

Before I continue, a pause for you oldesters, remembers their CB handle, for some exposition so wooden I apologize in advance if you get splinters. Twitter is a community web site where you answer the question “What’s happening?” by text, image or web site link. And from what I’ve gleaned what’s happening with many of you is that you’re eating or procreating since most of the photos are of food or toddlers. A general note, photos of your recent polyp free colonscopy doesn’t generate much interest if you’re not Katie Couric. The reward for this? Fellow tweeters (tweeterers?) follow you.
