Head of English: Mr B Miller

All B Block pupils have three 55-minute lessons per week, and the course aims to prepare pupils for the range of skills needed to successfully navigate the Pearson Edexcel IGCSEs in English Language and English Literature, such as comprehension, close analysis, creative writing, and crafting extended arguments Each term is centred around a specific literary text, be it a novel, Shakespeare play, or anthology of poems selected by the teacher Within this, however, a variety of traditional language skills are covered and promoted, including close reading, standard English grammar, inference and deduction, and transactional writing. In this way, the course aims to inspire a love of literature in pupils, as well as providing them with a firm and functional grounding in the rudiments of studying English

of Geography:

In B Block Geography, pupils develop a broad and dynamic understanding of the world around them through a diverse range of topics. The course begins with Geographical Skills and Local Geography, equipping pupils with essential mapreading, data analysis, and fieldwork techniques while exploring their immediate surroundings They then move on to Development Geography, where they investigate global inequalities, the factors influencing economic growth, and strategies for sustainable progress

Later in the year, pupils examine the forces shaping our planet in the Hazards unit, where they study natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanoes, and hurricanes Using real-world case studies like the 2010 Haiti Earthquake, pupils analyse the causes, impacts, and responses to major disasters, considering both immediate relief efforts and long-term recovery strategies. The Geography of Crime module explores the relationship between place and crime, including an in-depth study of piracy off the coast of Somalia, its causes, and the international efforts to combat it.

The course also includes a fascinating study of the world’s Oceans, where pupils explore marine ecosystems, the impact of human activity, and the importance of ocean conservation. The year concludes with an independent project, allowing pupils to apply their knowledge and skills to a topic of their choice, reinforcing their learning and encouraging curiosity about the subject

H I S T O R Y

Head of History: Dr N

In the B Block, pupils study a range of periods, deliberately chosen to avoid unnecessary overlap with topics that may have been studied previously, or those to be studied for GCSE As such the course provides knowledge and understanding of key historical events alongside the development of key skills, such as essay writing and source evaluation, that are essential for the study of History at GSCE and beyond

In the Michaelmas term, pupils start with a course examining the origins, course and consequences of the Russian Revolution This is followed by a focus on Black British History and in the Lent term, pupils study the Vietnam War In the Summer term, the Home Front in Britain during the Second World War is the focus The Summer term also sees the Department organise an educational visit to the First World War battlefields of Northern France and Belgium, which is open to all members of B Block.

L A T I N

The department’s ethos is one of “Latin for all”, with some pupils coming to Repton with a number of years of study under their belt, and some starting the language from scratch.

In B Block, the focus is on ensuring that pupils are confident in the basic tenses of verbs, to give them a grounding for GCSE, though we also explore the politics, sociology, theology, and material culture of the ancient world Many pupils’ interest in the Classical world was ignited through mythology – not least the Percy Jackson books! - and we foster this by reading extracts from The Aeneid and Odyssey.Pupils are also introduced to the new language, Classical Greek

At GCSE, pupils will develop their command of the language, to be able to translate extended passages of Latin accurately, and read Latin authors, such as Vergil, Pliny and Tacitus, in the original.

The Classics Department at Repton is very keen to welcome anyone interested in learning Latin, whether they have studied the language previously or not If you have never learnt Latin before, please contact the Head of Classics, and he will be happy to discuss how you can start your Classical journey!
