Right when I enter the province of Flevoland via the ‘Stichtse Brug’, I know that I’m on new land. Fifty years ago this was the bottom of the IJsselmeer. Now I see vast meadows, a heron flying over and graceful flocks of starlings that are flying by to land in the fields. On this fresh day I will enjoy a significantly warmer climate at the Orchids Farm in Luttelgeest. I imagine myself being in the jungle here and I enjoy the beautiful orchids and much more. In the tropical garden turtles and koi carp can be found. Thousands of butterflies fluttering along in the big Butterfly Valley and the Lori Garden with more than 80 small parrots make me very happy.
drie kilometer lange kunstijsbaan is de langste kunstijsbaan van Nederland. Ik krijg een warm welkom hier en mag eerst genieten van een warme chocolademelk voor ik behoorlijk houterig het ijs betreed op mijn gehuurde schaatsen. Ik denk terug aan een lange schaatstocht op natuurijs met mijn vader voorop, daarna mijn jongere zusjes en ik ergens ver achteraan. Maar als ik eenmaal warm ben, merk ik dat ik er toch plezier aan beleef. Meteen een kilometerslange tocht is voor mij te hoog gegrepen. Als mijn spieren zeer beginnen te doen, kijk ik nog even naar de ijskarts die tegen elkaar strijden op de andere baan en ik lunch hier met een overheerlijke erwtensoep. Ik voel het: de winter komt eraan!
Tulpenfestival
In Urk, a former island that has become part of the shore side by reclamation, I order fish & chips at the Urk Fish-market: breaded plaice fillets with fries. Formerly the whole village was empty during the week and only the women were at home. At that time the ladies wanted nothing more than to marry a fisherman. Ook in het voorjaar en de zomer is het heerlijk in Flevoland. In de Noordoostpolder vind je de meeste tulpen van Nederland. Van 17 april tot en met 5 mei geniet je er van tachtig kilometer tulpenpracht. Er zijn speciale fiets-, wandel- en koetstochten langs de bollenvelden uitgezet en onderweg kun je de tulpenbedrijven bezoeken die tijdens het festival hun deuren hebben geopend. Verder is er een speciale tulpenshowtuin, een tulpeninformatiecentrum en er zijn tulpenmozaïeken te bewonderen in de dorpen.

horse, a red deer, the wild ox, the eagle or a fox. I finish my weekend in an active way. It’s just below ten degrees and that means I can go skating. Frost is not required for Flevonice. Here you can skate outside even if it is not freezing. The three-kilometre long ice rink is the longest skating rink in the Netherlands. I get a warm welcome here and should stop for a hot chocolate before I enter the ice rink with a pretty stiff tread on my rented skates.
