We invite you to participate in the 2023 Summer Course “Digital Narratives of the Amazon¨. This program will give you the tools to use digital communi-cation to understand, reflect upon, and promote interculturalism.

The Summer School organized by Universidad de las Américas of Ecuador, together with Bournemouth University of England has a duration of 1 month and it is focused on community communication, as well as the promotion and documentation of Indigenous culture. The Summer school will take place in two phases. The first phase will take place online from July 3rd to July 14th, the second phase takes place face-to-face and begins on July 17th at the UDLA campus in Quito.

Objectives

• Discuss strategies and methodologies for digital communication within the context of community organizations.

• Learn about the legends of Jumandy, midwifery and anthropology.

• Produce audiovisual content together with members of the Quijos.

• (NAOQUI) nationality, to create audiovisual productions with fictional themes.

• Apply different techniques to tell the same story (photography, virtual reality, video games, among others).

What does the program include?

• 48 contact hours.

• Lectures and workshops with expert professors in the area, from UDLA and BU

• Field work in the Amazon region.

• Community experiences and workshops with Indigenous communities

• Immersion in Ecuadorian culture, residing with host families

Results

Ʉ Production of videos, documentaries, photographs, and other digital narrative pieces.

Ʉ Promotion of Amazonian culture through digital communication tools.

Methodology

The first part of the program will be online until July 17th, when students have to be on UDLA campus to take the workshops and lectures with UDLA and BU lecturers and Quijos community.

The classes will take place at Universidad de Las Américas (Quito) and the program will have field trips to Tena, which is located in the Amazon.

The first days of the on-site part will be spent at UDLA campus, focusing on the methodology of collaborative work in the community and audiovisual pieces in the Amazon, including formats and examples of production regarding the Legends of Jumandy.

In addition, workshops will be held on animation, linguistic documenting, digital storytelling, audiovisual recording techniques, short film, games development and audiovisual production and post production processes.

The groups will work on communication strategies aimed at promoting Amazonian cultural practices using digital communication tools.

During the field trip to Tena, we will collaborate with the community on audiovisual pieces directed by a cross-cultural team of facilitators from UDLA, Bournemouth University, and the indigenous community.

Finally, the post-production processes, transcriptions, workshops, the presentation of the group work and the assessment by professors and guests will be held at the UDLA campus in Quito.

Young people from the indigenous community will codirect the projects and collaborate in the generation, documentation, and techniques for the study and promotion of the region’s culture.

Ʉ Basic knowledge of digital storytelling and editing software.

Professors in charge of the program: Bournemouth University

Has worked in film and media production in the UK and Europe for over ten years. She is a former lecturer in Digital Media Production at the University of Brighton and Creative Video Production at the University of Sussex. She holds an interdisciplinary PhD in Political Anthropology and Documentary Film, an MA in Digital Documentary, and a BA in Media Studies.

Public Relations in the Department of Communication and Journalism from the School of Media and Communication. She gained professional communication experience in public affairs, issues management, and strategic communication while working at the Ontario Government Cabinet Office and Ministry of Transportation in Toronto, Canada.

In media production. Previously, he held two postdoctoral research positions at the Faculty of Media and Communications at Bournemouth University. His work has been published in academic journals, newspapers and other publishing venues as well as screened and exhibited internationally.

Batchelor of Arts in Sculpture. Awarded the Royal Scottish Academy John Kinross Scholarship for Art and Architecture (Florence). Master of Philosophy in 2D/3D Motion Graphics and Virtual Prototyping (The Glasgow School of Art). She was Artist in Residence at The National Centre for Computer Animation, Bournemouth University. Currently a senior academic in Computer Animation at BU. Her art works utilise a range of 3D animation technologies and have been exhibited internationally including: Siggraph, San Diego; International Symposium of Electronic Art, Istanbul; Kunstihoone Tallinn, Estonia; Annecy, France; Photographers Gallery, London.

In media at Bournemouth University (United Kingdom). He holds a Ph.D. in film studies and has research interests in the areas of cinema and history, cinema and social conflict, and genre studies. Olesen has participated in academic events and conferences in Prague, at Canterbury Christ Church University, the American University of Rome, and The Ohio State University. He has published an interview with Italian cult director Sergio Martino in the Journal of Italian Cinema and Media Studies (2017) and is currently working on a research project on transnational media, investigating the intersection of local and international dimensions of genre production in World cinema.

Course. Holds a Master’s degree in Digital Arts, Research modality, from the Australian National University. Manages advanced studies in digital animation, film, visual effects, and advertising design.

Communication assistant, technologist in graphic design and engineer in multimedia digital design, technologist in multitrack audio recordings, master in digital audiovisual post-production, with a diploma in higher education and a specialization in sound design for XR experiences. Two-time consecutive winner of the photographic contest of the “Fiestas de las flores y las frutas” with people portraits.

Digital Post-Production

Bachelor in Multimedia and Audiovisual Production and Master in Audiovisual Direction and Postproduction. Has directed various music videos and commercials. He is the Director of Crew Studio LabUdla, produced the Cannes XR Festival Satellite in Ecuador, and oversees UDLA’s Immersive Lab.

He has a degree in Multimedia and Audiovisual Production and a Master’s Degree in Design and Videgogame Development. He specializes in animation, 3D modeling and interactivity. He has worked with clients such as Roche and Grunenthal. Currently, he is the interactive director of The Shaman Light VR and When Silence Talks.
