Is Reitz se drinkwater veilig? AfriForum het onlangs verskeie dorpe in die Hoogland-streek se water getoets om die gehalte van dorpe in dié streek se drink(bloudruppelstatus) en rioolwater (groendruppelstatus) te bepaal. AfriForum se nasionale blou-en-groendruppelprojek fokus op die stand van dorpe se drinkwater en rioolaanlegte. Dié projek fokus nie noodwendig op die toestand van die aanleg self nie, maar wel op die gehalte van die water wat ná die proses as eindproduk in die vorm van drinkwater en behandelde rioolwater gelewer word. “Ons kon vasstel dat alle dorpe in die gebied se drinkwater aan die minimum standaarde voldoen en geen skadelike bakterieë bevat nie. AfriForum sal die watergehalte egter deurlopend toets. Inwoners het ’n grondwetlike reg tot skoon drinkwater,” sê Jp Nel, AfriForum se assistentkoördineerder vir die Hoogland.

BLOUDRUPPELRESULTATE Dié resultate dui daarop dat al die dorpe in die Hoogland-streek se drinkwater wat getoets is, skoon is. Die dorpe is Bethlehem, Frankfort, Harrismith, Reitz, Senekal. GROENDRUPPELRESULTATE Volgens AfriForum se groendruppelresultate voldoen die vyf rioolsuiweringsaanlegte wat getoets is nie aan die gestelde mikrobiologiese standaarde nie. Die burgerregteorganisasie het sy kommer uitgespreek oor rioolsuiweringsaanlegte binne die munisipaliteite waarvan die rioolwater nie aan die gestelde standaarde voldoen nie, dit sluit Bethlehem, Frankfort, Kroonstad, Reitz en Welkom in. “Ons sal die nienakoming verder ondersoek en optree waar nodig,” sê Nel.

Former Nketoana mayor and CFO arrested for alleged tender fraud ■ Courtesy The Star REITZ: A former mayor and and his chief financial officer (CFO) have been arrested for alleged tender fraud and corruption committed in 2011. Mandla Mamba, who used to be the mayor of Nketoana Local Municipality was arrested in July with Vincent Mkhefa who used to be the CFO. They were arrested together with Caroline Nketu, who was a service provider at the municipality. The arrests come after a whistle blower reported an alleged tender fraud and corruption committed at the municipality relating to the installation of equipment in the parks, where incorrect procurement procedures were allegedly

followed, quotations were apparently inflated and kickbacks are said to have exchanged hands. According to Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Lynda Steyn, investigations into the matter were conducted and it was found that Mamba sourced a service provider in March 2011 and requested a quotation for playground equipment. "The service provider submitted the quotation in this regard for the amount of R32 900. The equipment was later delivered and payment authorised,” Steyn said. She added that during the same period, Nketu who was also a service provider, was requested to provide quotations for the same tender contract and she

submitted two quotations for the amount of R198 500 each for two areas. “Mkhefa the former CFO, allegedly authorised these payments and as a result of these fraudulent activities, Nketoana Local Municipality was prejudiced and suffered a loss of approximately R364 100,” Steyn said. According to Steyn, the accused have been charged with fraud and money laundering in contravention of the Local Government Municipal Finance Management Act, the Prevention of Organised Crime Act as well as the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act. 47 Farm murders a tragic loss ■ AgriSA Press Release Agri SA is concerned about the number of farm murders that was announced by the South African Police Service (SAPS) today. Although this figure is a decrease from the 62 farm murders in the previous financial year, it remains enormous and amounts to almost four murders a month. The deceased were part of close communities and their murders are a tragic loss. “Attacks on the farming community and the brutality of these attacks, are unacceptable and have assumed alarming proportions,” says Tommie Esterhuyse, chair of Agri SA’s Centre of Excellence: Rural Safety. “Everything possible must be done to protect these communities, who are responsible for food security in South Africa.” Although the farm murder rate is among the lowest recorded in the past few years, it does not mean that the agricultural sector should lessen its vigilance. The trend looks promising, but the reality remains that 47 murders are still 47 too many. "There

have been farm attacks and murders for decades. Drastic action, supported with the necessary political will, is needed to prevent it.“ Agri SA applauded the farming communities that had upgraded their security structures and local initiatives despite the high cost associated with this. “Farmers have to rely on private security companies because of a lack of support from local police stations. Partnerships with the private sector have borne fruit and contributed to the success of crime-fighting efforts.” According to the SAPS statistics stock theft has increased. An Agri SA survey showed that property-related crimes – stock theft and theft of farm infrastructure and implements – have the biggest impact on agriculture, with losses amounting to billions of Rand. Stock theft is increasingly the target of organised crime and the police should investigate it as such. “The farming community is increasingly reluctant to report incidents of property-related crime because they no longer have confidence in the criminal

justice system to ensure successful prosecution of criminals. In Harrismith and Bethlehem alone, more than 2,700 head of cattle have been stolen in the past 15 months and more than 300 cases have been reported. But only one arrest has been made.” Agri SA, however, acknowledged the SAPS for including farm attacks in the crime statistics. This is an indication of a change in attitude on the part of the police and the fact that they recognise the seriousness of this matter. In this regard, Agri SA also welcomed the new revised rural safety strategy that will be released shortly. “Agri SA was actively involved in the drafting of this revised strategy and hopes that it will lend further momentum to farm security and the protection of the agricultural sector.” The Agri Securitas Trust Fund has since its inception in 1999, assisted in safeguarding thousands of farmers and farm workers. Agri SA and the Trust Fund will continue to strive for the safety of every farmer, farm worker and farming community.

Die feit dat jy die idee skep dat jy geld het terwyl almal weet die Fortuner is nie regtig in vir 'n diens nie. Die klein skenkingkie van 15 Bonsmara beeste aan die skool. Vergeet jy waarheen jy vandaan kom? Dat ons saam in die oggende kaalvoet skool toe geloop het en dat die OVV net soveel keer by jou gestop het as by ons. Geld maak dinge makliker maar dit maak sommige mense lelik. Geld kan nie geluk koop nie. En noudat jy ongelukkig is put jy genot daaruit om ander seer te maak. Die gesegde lui die wiel draai suster. " Wolprodusente gaan deur n moeilike tyd. Die vlakke waarop die mark geopen het is kommerwekkend, maar verlede seisoen was daar die teenoorgestelde ongekende styging met die eerste 3 veilings. Ons bedryf was in 38 agtereenvolgende maande in n ongekende styging. Daar is verskeie redes vir die "regstelling" in die mark. Ek kan egter nie anders as optimisties wees na n skamele styging vandag in die Australiese mark nie. Ons het topgehalte wol, aanbod is laag en aanvraag steeds goed. ‘n Plaaslike gastehuis het die skok van hulle lewe gekry die naweek. Daar is deur ‘n venster ingebreek om toegang te bekom na een van die kamers. Niks is gesteel nie maar dat daar liefde gemaak is hoef niemand oor te wonder nie. Gelukkig het die eienaar duisende spandeer om kameras te installeer en daar kon gou vasgestel word wie die boef of boewe is. Wat ‘n surprise! ‘n Jong krulkop en ‘n meisie het besluit dat die grassies te nat is en dat hulle dit in styl iewers wil doen sonder om daarvoor te betaal. Klitsie verstaan terwyl daar na die video evidence gekyk word een van die personeellede aangedui het dat hulle die krulkop gereeld op die perseel gewaar en het aangeneem hy bly in een van die kamers. Toe daar verder ondersoek ingestel word vind die eienaar uit dat dit al vir byna 8 maande so aangaan waar die krulkop en ‘n ander meisie elke week in die kamer kafoefel sonder om te betaal. En raai wat! Die eienaar ken die krulkop, hy is pelle met sy seun! Hy besluit toe om vir krulkop te konfronteer as om Polisie toe te gaan. Krulkop vat nie lank om te erken nie, hy gebruik die kamer al vir ‘n rukkie op Vrydae verniet want die eienaar se seun het vir hom ‘n sleutel gegee. Hy is baie lief vir sy meisie maar hy het aansienlik meer liefde nodig as wat sy hom kan gee. Terwyl sy girl vir hom by die woonstel wag gaan maak hy liefde met girls by die gastehuis. Nou hoekom deur die venster klim as jy ‘n sleutel het? Want krulkop werk met meel en het somewhere in die proses sy sleutel in ‘n meelsak verloor… Klitsie verstaan daar’s nou diefwering voor al die vensters en iewers in iemand se huis in ‘n sak meel is daar ‘n sleutel vir die gastekamer…

Method Heat oil in a pot, dust lamb knuckle with flour. Brown until golden brown. Add onion, garlic, tomatoes, water and Royco Beef Goulash Cook-In-Sauce. Stir to combine. Cover and cook for 1 and a half hours. Add potatoes and carrots and cook for an additional 20 munities or until vegetables are soft. Revamped Pap In a pot add water and Royco chicken stew mix, bring to the boil, add beans. Slowly pour in the maize meal and stir using a whisk, once combined use wooden spoon to stir. Reduce the heat, cover and cook on low heat and keep stirring. Cook for 20 minutes, then add butter and stir. Add cheese and mix until combine. Remove and serve. FLATTEN WITH A SPOON AND SLICE.
