LINDLEY | CORNÉ VAN NOORDWYK Anyone who stays in Lindley or who has survived the pothole drenched roads visiting this Eastern Free State town will know, the entrance to Lindley is not a pretty sight. It is not a “new-problem” and has been part of the town for years now. Not only is it a sore eye for locals and visitors, but it also poses a great threat to the environment and the health of its residents. Recently, Dr Roy Jankielsohn, Leader of the DA in the Free State, published a media statement addressing this ongoing problem in the Nketoana Local Municipality town of Lindley. According to Jankielsohn, the Nketoana Local Municipality is the direct cause of this environmental hazard in the town entrance. He wrote: “The Nketoana Municipality is the cause of this environmental hazard at the entrance to

Lindley by not providing a decent refuse site, but also by dumping refuse illegally next to the road and close to residences themselves.” In the media statement he has assured residents that the issue will be addressed by the Democratic Alliance. Jankielsohn said that he has been informed that another site has been identified and they – the DA - will request the time frames for this from the Free State MEC for Cogtahs. REITZ | CORNÉ VAN NOORDWYK According to a recent report, only three municipalities here in the Free State have submitted their outstanding annual financial reports from the previous financial year. By the time the provincial premier, Sisi Ntombela, was making her State of the Province Address (SOPA), the Head of the Free State Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mokete Duma, stated that seven municipalities had still not submitted their annual financial reports, as a result, auditing reports for those municipalities are outstanding. Duma says the three was the Phuthaditjhaba-based Maluti-aPhofung Local Municipality, Bothaville’s Nala Local Municipality, and the Reitz-based Nketoana Local Municipality. “The ones that was outstanding included the Masilonyana Local Municipality and Mafube Local Municipality, amongst others. The Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality has finalised its submission. We will be working closely with the municipalities to make sure they comply.” Ntombela during her address aired her concerns about municipalities that have their annual financial statements outstanding. The provincial government has provided support to 21 municipalities to ensure compliance with the requirements of the performance management system. VRYSTAAT | CORNÉ VAN NOORDWYK Minstens agt boerderygemeenskappe in die Vrystaat is het onder die diefstal van hulle mielie oes deurgeloop, 'n kommoditeit wat al hoe meer gewilder geraak het in diestal-kringe. Nie net plaas dit boere in gevaar nie, omrede die misdadigers baie dikwels gewapen is, maar het Vrystaat Landbou (VL) onthul dat sommige boere elke maand tot R100 000 moet opdok vir veiligheidswagte om hul plantasies te beskerm. Dr Jane Buys, veiligheidsrisikoontleder van VL, het in 'n verklaring gesê bykomende sekuriteitskoste, tesame met verhoogde insetkoste, kan voedselsekerheid in gevaar stel. Die VL het boerderygemeenskappe gewaarsku om op die uitkyk te wees vir die toenemende misdaadtendens, met die

Die VL berig die boerderygemeenskappe Allanridge, Bothaville, Bultfontein, Koppies, Odendaalsrus, Vierfontein, Virginia en Welkom is die ergste getref. “Mieliediefstal soos dit in die Vrystaat voorkom, is 'n hoogs georganiseerde misdaad wat deur groepe en sindikate bestuur word,” het le Roux voortgegaan. “Dit is nie net ’n misdaad waar mense wat honger is per geleentheid mielies onwettig van lande af neem nie. Afsetpunte, markte en geld wat wissel in handel is hier ter sprake.” Die vereniging het die polisie dringend versoek om mieliediefstal met “die nodige erns” op te neem.

| HEUNINGDRUPPELS Daar is absoluut niks aangenaam aan swaarkry nie, want dit stroop jou van alles, en ook van jou menswaardigheid. En jitte ek ken mense wat in hulle hele lewe niks anders as swaarkry geken het nie. Mense van my ouderdom kan bykans deur die bank vertel van hulle ouers se swaarkry en as jy eers 'n bietjie op hulle voetspore gaan stap het, besef jy dat jou eie definisie van swaarkry anders as hulle s'n is. Ek persoonlik ken nie (volgens my) regtig swaarkry nie, hoewel daar ook al uitdagings in my lewe was, maar dit kan hoegenaamd nie vergelyk word met die swaar van ander mense in hierdie wêreld nie. In globale terme is ek seker skatryk net omdat ek 'n huis en motors besit. Daar is egter 'n ander element van swaarkry wat veel erger is, en dis mense wat deur trauma of ander emosionele uitdagings gaan. In Viktor Frankl se boek "Man's search for meaning", skryf hy dat die mens enigiets kan verduur as hy net sou weet wat die betekenis van daardie swaarkry is, en voorts ook as jy weet dat dit iewers weer beter sal gaan. Ek weet egter een ding, en dit is dat dit makliker is as jy nié alleen daardie pad stap nie. In die Bybel word daar oorweldigend baie geskryf oor mense wat bitter swaargekry het. Ek dink aan Paulus wat 'n paar keer amper doodgemartel is, ek dink aan die Israeliete in die woestyn, Job wat alles verloor het, die dissipels wat vir hulle geloof gesterf het, Johannes die Doper wie se kop afgekap is, en dan natuurlik Jesus se wrede kruisdood. Miskien het hulle nie almal enige betekenis in daardie swaarkry gesien nie, maar ek en jy sien die betekenis in hulle swaarkry. Voorts was die Here altyd daar vir hulle, net soos wat hy daar is vir jou en my. Laastens ken ons hierdie volgende baie bekende teks, maar as jy ín jou swaarkry worstel, klink hierdie teks maar effens hol. "Ons verheug ons ook in die swaarkry, want ons weet: swaarkry kweek volharding, en volharding kweek egtheid van geloof, en egtheid van geloof kweek hoop; en dié hoop beskaam nie, want God het Sy liefde in ons harte uitgestort deur die Heilige Gees wat Hy aan ons gegee het." Reitz Hoërskool het onlangs hulle Laerskool Vrystaat Atletiek uitslae bekend gemaak. Reitz kon spog met verskeie jong atlete wat hulle tydens die byeenkoms opgelewer het. Elkeen van hulle het ongelooflik goed presteer. Die uitslae is as volg: In die onder 11 afdeling het Handro Swart ‘n 6de plek in gewigstoot behaal. In die

onder 12 afdeling het Gerné Potgieter ‘n 3de plek in die 1500 meter behaal. In die onder 11 afdeling het Wilhelm Potgieter geskitter met ‘n 5de plek in die 1500 meter en beide Wilhelm Potgieter en Carlo Cilliers in die onder 11 afdeling seuns aflos ‘n uitmuntende 2de plek.

Dear reader… It’s a fact. We as South Africans are finding ourselves in difficult situations. Whether we like it…or not! I don’t want to scare you with these horror-figures, but you might already know this by now. Increases in the price of fuel have taken petrol inland to over R21 a liter – a 60-litre tank now costs over R1, 200 to fill. With the war on Ukraine sending the prices of oil, gas and coal spiking, the impacts here are already being felt. Economists predict another huge petrol price increase in April and South Africa’s reliance on open cycle gas turbines for emergency power is a major risk. With an energy

The situation in Russia and Ukraine… does it really affect us? grid still largely reliant on coal, Eskom is seeing flames and its cost base will go up as the coal price surges and demands for exports rise. The electricity utility had 17 units at risk, it announced earlier, and load shedding was extended to who knows when. An Eskom representative said at a briefing that the utility could soon reach a point where it can no longer afford to pay for the emergency diesel which keeps the turbines going, another media source reported. Energy regulator Nersa has approved a 9.61% increase to Eskom from 1 April, but it had applied for a 20.5% increase. Eskom’s debt stands at R390-billion and is only due for restructuring by 2024. Municipalities add an additional surcharge (although they pay a slightly lower tariff for bulk purchases), which means that, come July, households already buckling will pay an energy tariff that is double the current inflation rate. The SA Reserve Bank has indicated that it will increase

interest rates to offset inflationary pressures, but this could push many households to the brink. Small businesses employ the highest proportion of South Africans and load shedding takes an enormous toll, as many business owners indicated. Most small businesses use generators to keep going during power cuts. But the cost of keeping generators running is set to rise as the consequences of Russia’s war are felt across the world. Eskom’s scheduled power cuts were more numerous in 2021 than ever before, and it warned that the high number of unscheduled power outages would have an impact on essential maintenance work. Directions: Heat the oil in a large wide heavy pot over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until they start to brown, 10 to 15 minutes. Add the cumin, garlic, ginger, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon and star anise, and cook, stirring often, 1 to 2 minutes. Add the curry powder and some chili powder (if you want it spicy) and cook for another minute. Stir in the chicken, coating well with the spices, and cook for about 2 minutes. Add the cilantro, salt,

2 cups vegetable oil 3 onions, chopped 1 tablespoon cumin seeds 1 teaspoon minced garlic 1 teaspoon grated ginger 5 cardamom pods, cracked 5 whole cloves 4 cinnamon sticks 3 star anise 3 tablespoons curry powder Chili powder, optional 5 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts, chopped into small pieces 1 cup chopped fresh cilantro 2 tablespoons salt 5 tomatoes, chopped and pureed 3 potatoes, chopped 1 stem fresh curry leaves, leaves picked 8 to 10 loaves unsliced firm white sandwich bread, halved, for serving Carrot salad, for serving tomatoes, potatoes and curry leaves. Simmer until the chicken is cooked through, about 30 minutes. Add additional seasoning, if necessary. Dig out the center of each bread loaf half in one piece, reserving the "plug". Spoon the curry into the hollow of each loaf half and place the plug on top. Serve with carrot salad. Using your hands, break off some of the bread and use it to scoop up some curry and the carrot salad.

TB Awareness Month 2022 01 to 31 March

Tuberculosis (TB) causes thousands of deaths every year in South Africa and the rest of the world. Facts about TB: Tuberculosis (TB) is second only to HIV/AIDS as the greatest killer worldwide due to a single infectious agent. In 2012, 8.6 million people fell ill with TB and 1.3 million died from TB. Over 95% of TB deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, and it is among the top three causes of death for women aged 15 to 44. In 2012, an estimated 530 000 children became ill with TB and 74 000 HIVnegative children died of TB. TB is a

leading killer of people living with HIV causing one-fifth of all deaths. Multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB) is present in virtually all countries surveyed. The estimated number of people falling ill with tuberculosis each year is declining, although very slowly, which means that the world is on track to achieve the Millennium Development Goal to reverse the spread of TB by 2015. The TB death rate dropped 45% between 1990 and 2012. An estimated 22 million lives saved through the use of DOTS and the Stop TB Strategy recommended by WHO.

GREY HERON | ARDEA CINEREA The grey heron is a tall bird, standing around 1 m tall, but a real lightweight for its size, weighing in at between 1 and 2 kg’s. The grey heron is grey on its back and wings, with a “dirty” white underside. The head is white with a black supercilium (eyebrow), with a black crest. The grey heron has dull brown legs and a yellow bill. The grey heron feeds on mainly on fish, but will feed on small mammals, insects, molluscs and juvenile birds. Small fish are swallowed head first. Larger prey is first killed on shore before being consumed. Small mammals and birds are often drowned by the heron, before being swallowed whole. During breeding, the grey heron's bill becomes bright orange and the legs become a pink to red colour. The heron is monogamous and will breed in colonies known as heronries. The same nest is used year after year. Three to five eggs are laid and incubated for around 25 days by both parents. The chicks fledge at around 7 to 8 weeks. The grey heron has a slow and regular flight, with the long neck pulled back in a snake-like “S” shape. They are known for their ability to stand motionless for extended periods when hunting. The grey heron is active both diurnal and nocturnally. The grey heron is found throughout South Africa, except arid regions. They are found in shallow bodies of water including coastal lagoons and estuaries.

Nege maatskaplike werkers van regoor die land is Woensdag op Internasionale Maatskaplikewerkdag as #Hoopdraers van hul gemeenskappe gekroon. Die #Hoopdraers-toekennings is ŉ inisiatief van Solidariteit Helpende Hand en Solidariteit se Maatskaplikewerkersgilde en is vanjaar vir die eerste keer aangebied. Volgens Marisa Engelbrecht, sektorhoof van Solidariteit se Beroepsgildes, is die doel daarvan om erkenning te gee aan maatskaplike werkers wat ŉ onblusbare passie vir hul werk het en ondanks moeilike omstandighede die fakkel van hoop in hul gemeenskappe bly dra. Die publiek kon sedert Februarie maatskaplike werkers van hul omgewing op Helpende Hand se webwerf benoem. Die wenners is tydens Helpende Hand se jaarlikse Wil-om-tehelp-werkswinkels landwyd aangekondig. Dié werkwinkels is ŉ bederfoggend vir maatskaplike werkers terwyl hulle terselfdertyd die geleentheid kry om te netwerk en hul kennis en vaardighede uit te brei. Hier onder is die wenners van 2022 se #Hoopdraer-toekennings. ANDRI SMITH – OOS-KAAP: Andri werk die afgelope 35 jaar al as maatskaplike werker, waarvan die laaste 25 by die ACVV Middelburg. Die welstand van straatkinders en gemeenskapsprojekte is haar passie. Gedurende 2020 se grendeltyd het sy in samewerking met kerke en gemeenskapslede ŉ sopkombuis en skuiling in Middelburg tot stand gebring. Alle kos wat uitgedeel is, is met donasies befonds. Andri loop meer as die ekstra myl vir elke kind in haar gemeenskap. MARLENE WALKDEN – OOS-RAND: Marlene is tans ŉ maatskaplike werker by die Suikerbos aftreeoord. Die oord het bykans 500 inwonende bejaardes na wie sy met groot liefde omsien. Sy neem ook deel aan talle aktiwiteite in haar gemeenskap en help graag kerke en organisasies met hul projekte. MARCEL VAN DYK – WESKAAP: Marcel het ŉ passie vir bejaardes. Hy werk ongeveer 12 jaar al vir Age in Action in die Wes-Kaap. Daar is tans min organisasies wat werklik na ons weerlose seniors se welstand omsien. Marcel en sy

organisasie poog egter om op ŉ holistiese manier ŉ verskil te maak in hulle lewens. Hy loop altyd die ekstra myl vir sy kliënte en het ongelooflike groot hart. TANYA VAN DER WALT – NOORD-KAAP: Tanya het ŉ onblusbare passie vir haar werk. Sy is honderd persent toegewyd aan almal in haar gemeenskap maar ook mense buite haar gemeenskap. In ŉ tyd van nood is sy ŉ baken van hoop wat haar ondersteuning en dienste gewillig bied. CHANTELL WIESNER – VRYSTAAT: Chantell het ŉ passie vir maatskaplike werk. Sy is gedrewe en staan uit as iemand met ŉ hart vol liefde en begrip. Tussendeur haar besige program as statutêre maatskaplike werker by Vrystaat Versorging in Aksie (Bloemfontein) het sy onlangs ook nog 'n honneursgraad in sielkunde verwerf. Chantell is altyd vriendelik en behulpsaam en beskikbaar om haar kollegas met raad en inligting by te staan. IZANDA FERREIRA – PRETORIA: Izanda is ŉ maatskaplike werker by die President Kruger Kinderhuis in Pretoria. Sy word deur die kinders beskryf as ŉ ystervrou. Sy is lief vir haar werk en het beslis ŉ hart vir elke kind – in die tehuis maar ook daarbuite. Al is sy hoe besig, is sy steeds ook daar vir die jongmense wat die kinderhuis reeds verlaat het en help sy hulle om hul drome na te streef. DINA HARMSE – MPUMALANGA: Dina het van kleins af die begeerte gehad om ŉ maatskaplike werker te word. Ná 22 jaar in die bedryf is sy nog net so passievol en leef sy haar roeping tot eer van God uit teenoor haar medemens. Sy is baie geliefd deur almal wat haar pad kruis en is sy altyd bereid om die ekstra myl te stap. Sy is in die onderwys betrokke en wend haar kennis daar aan om leerders te ondersteun. DR. ESTIE GROENEWALD – VRYSTAAT: Estie het ŉ eretoekenning ontvang vir haar volgehoue bydrae tot die ontwikkeling van maatskaplike werk, spesifiek in die veld van supervisie en bestuur. Sy het haar maatskaplikewerkloopbaan in 1971 begin en het in 1992 en 1996 onderskeidelik 'n meestersgraad en 'n PhD in maatskaplikewerksupervisie en -bestuur

behaal. Sy het 26 jaar ondervinding in kinder- en gesinsorgdienste en is ook betrokke by die opleiding en mentor van en toesighouding oor studente. Sedert 2003 het sy gehelp om meer as 4 000 maatskaplike werkers oor die land heen in alle provinsies op te lei in die maatskaplikewerk-spesialisvelde supervisie en bestuur. Estie verseker dat maatskaplike werkers landswyd as opsigters opgelei word sodat hulle gehaltediens kan lewer. Haar doel is egter nie net om kursusgangers op te lei nie, maar ook om hulle te bemagtig om hul volle potensiaal te bereik sodat hulle as bestuurders aan die maatskaplike werkers onder hulle toesig die nodige leiding en ondersteuning kan gee. DR. HANNIE SCHOEMAN – SUID-KAAP: Hannie het ŉ eretoekenning ontvang vir haar buitengewone bydrae tot die maatskaplike beroep, spesifiek in die veld van spelterapie. Sy het opleiding in die VSA en Kanada ontvang en as stigter van die Sentrum vir Spelterapie en Opleiding is sy die afgelope 30 jaar aktief betrokke by die opleiding van spelterapeute in Suid-Afrika. Sy het duisende kinders se lewens aangeraak deur die duisende terapeute wat sy opgelei het. Met haar onblusbare passie lewer sy op ŉ hoë ouderdom steeds ŉ bydrae en is ŉ ware voorbeeld van deursettingsvermoë, liefde en omgee. Hannie is ŉ mede-outeur van die boek Entering the child’s World – A play therapy approach. Sy het ook referate by nasionale en internasionale akademiese geleenthede gelewer. Dr. Elsha Hermann, Helpende Hand se hoof van maatskaplike ontwikkeling, is beïndruk met die eerste ontvangers van die toekennings en sê: “Maatskaplike werkers is belangrik, want hulle tree op as veranderingsagente in die gemeenskap. Hulle tree op as beïnvloeders en fasiliteerders tussen die gemeenskap en netwerkdienste, en as dit moet, tree hulle op as vegters vir menseregte.
